Western Conference Predictions

In last week’s Eastern Conference prediction we looked at how the new rules, new system and new rosters might affect the standings and consequently the playoff births in the east. Today we take a stab at the Western Conference from our Northeastern division perspective.

Western matchups will be even fewer than ever with only 10 matches slated for the entire season.

The West will be wild and closer than ever. Several teams will be within 5 points of the final playoff spot but still too far away from a birth.

 Vancourver Canucks x Vancouver
San Jose Sharks x San Jose
Nashville Predators x Nashville
Colorado Avalanche Colorado
Los Angeles Kings Los Angeles
Edmonton Oilers  Edmonton
St Louis Blues St Louis
Chicago Blackhawks Chicago

Detroit Red Wings Detroit
Calgary Flames Calgary
Anaheim Might Ducks Anaheim
Minnesota Wild Minnesota
Dallas Stars Dallas
Columbus Blue Jackets Columbus
Phoenix Coyotes Phoenix

Central

  1. Nashville
  2. St-Louis
  3. Chicago
  4. Detroit
  5. Columbus

Pacific

  1. San Jose
  2. Los Angeles
  3. Anaheim
  4. Dallas
  5. Phoenix

Northwest

  1. Vancouver
  2. Colorado
  3. Edmonton
  4. Calgary
  5. Minnesota

Nashville continues to build their franchise into a respectable contender, they take their division while Hockeytown finds themselves a point or 2 shy of the final spot.

Wayne Gretzky gets a warm welcome into the coaching world as his Coyotes stumble early and never recover.

High expectations and intense pressure take their toll on Calgary as they miss out after going to the final.

Until April 06′.

Why would you pick Chicago to make the playoffs while Calgary misses them? Are you saying you actually think Chicago is a better team than Calgary?

These are just predictions. Predictions made before the first game has even started. Take them with a grain of salt.

I do think Chicago has improved their team, I do think Calgary will suffer a little bit of a cup hangover. Could they still make the playoffs? Could they still finish first overall? Of course, but my feeling is no.

What happens if Calgary does poorly in their division? Lets say 10-22. Chicago goes 22-10. All of a sudden Calgary’s at the bottom of their division and Chicago’s at the top of theirs.

Also keep in mind there are no ties this year. Chicago is just as likely to win in overtime or in a shootout as Calgary is, or Columbus or any other ‘weak’ team is.

I also noted that the in and out margin is going to be very slim, we’re talking some teams missing 8th spot by 1, 2 or 3 points.
8 teams isn’t many, some decent teams just won’t get in.

      1. Vancouver - 101 points with a very similar team. This teams will tear up the regular season then fall apart in the post season. Just as autumn follows summer and winter follows fall.

      2. San Jose - Another strong young team. Again, is similar to Shark team iced in the past. The team to beat in the west.

      3. Nashville - You read it here in September.

      4. Detroit - The wings are not a league doormat yet are they stevie.

      5. Dallas - Two years ago the wheels fell off. This teams will ride Turco and Modano to respectability

      6. Los Angeles - I don’t know who yet , but somebody will rise to the goaltending challange in California.

      7. Calgary - “Old time hockey coach! Eddie Shore!”

      8. Colorado - When was the last time this team didn’t make the playoffs. When they lost the division to the Whalers?

      1. San Jose
      2. Vancouver
      3. Nashville
      4. Dallas
      5. Colorado
      6. Calgary
      7. Detroit
      8. Edmonton/Los Angeles

The last Playoff seed will be hotly Contested for.. as always, but i do think this is the year all 3 teams in the west make the playoffs

and would mark the most playoff teams from canada in about 10 or so with 5

Woah! everyones picking Anahiem to miss the playoffs when they made the third round last year and added pronger to the team? Also I agree Calgary and Detroit should both be playoff teams. And why Vancouver so high sure they gained Luongo but they lost Bert, Jovo, Park, Carter I think theyre a 7th or 8th seed at best. I think the conference will look like this
      1. San Jose
      2. Calgary(close battle between them and nashville for second)
      3. Nashville
      4. Anaheim
      5. Dallas
      6. Detroit
      7. Vancouver
      8. Colorado (they never miss)
