Russian Rocket Pavel Bure Retires
By Habs Blog on November 1, 2005 | 2 Comments
Pavel Bure announced his retirement from hockey today. Bure has not played since March 2003 so it shouldn’t have seemed like a big surprise. There is a bit of an empty feeling though now that it is official. Bure was one of the league’s best goal scorers in the 90s and one of the most electrifying to watch. He made Vancouver an interesting team to watch long before the Marcus Naslund and Todd Bertuzzi era.
He was just shy of the 500 goal plateau with 437 goals and 342 assists for 779 points in 702 NHL games. If he was able to stay healthy he’d have no problem reaching it.
I remember getting his rookie card and watching him dominate the World Junior Championships and seeing how skilled he was and thinking this guy would be huge in the NHL.
Bure’s new focus is to manage the Russian Olympic team which has been known to be full of problems.
Pavel Bure should be a strong candidate for the NHL Hall of Fame.

- Senet1 : I agree, Carey needs to get some starts if they leave him out much longer he will be ineffective in the Playoffs, I really thought it was time to play him against TO but coach chose otherwise. Halak is not used to playing so many games in a row, whereas North Am. goalies are.
- goalie : Though I have supported Halak a lot this year, the decision was to keep both goalies. So, I really hope that Carey too is playing well going into the playoffs, that we make the playoffs and both goalies are at the top of their game. Put Carey in for the next few games and see how he plays!
- Senet1 : bigger that he covers more of the net. Being bigger price tends to loose the puck in his feet, most tall goalies have that problem. But is is one that more experience helps them improve on that weakness. With two more years of development Price is still the goalie of the future, if not the present.
- Senet1 : Well the more HALAK plays the more other teams will find his weaknesses and if he does not improve on those weakness he will not be as affective in a long run. I have notived that last three games that the goals scored on him many of the shooters are going high on him. Being a smaller goalie he is more vulnerable. Don't be surprised if Halak only onl makes it part way through a playoff series and then Price will be back in net. Price weakness is also high shots but he is so much bigger that h
- Senet1 : I have to admit I am over joyed at no ndgatives coming out of this game. One thing I could not figure out, when Gomez and Gionta saw AK46 deek the TO goalie and go 5 hole why they didn't try the same thing is beyond me. That is obviously his weakness. Goalie I am concerned about that too , only good part about it there aRE NO SHOOTOUTS IN THE PLAYOFFS.
- goalie : I am more than a little concerned that the Lafs exposed Halak's inability to stop a player who dekes to Halak's glove hand side. He played those dekes very poorly.
- rocky : The leafs played a strong game and have some pretty deadly shootout threats. We did not lose anyone to injury and that game could have went either way. Now how is that for a positive spin on things eh?
- rocky : I hate to admit this, but I think Andrei Kostitsyn is poised to break his slump. He still skates like a turd, but I just have a feeling. If we get out of this game with no major injuries to key players I will be happy win or lose.
- Senet1 : Mst's I think if they can sign Markov to an extension then they can make move on some of the other defenceman before they become UFA. Hammer is a prime example and likewise so is Gil. Somehow I feel that there is something wrong with a one year contract like Mara's where he can be paid for not playing due to injury and then the team pays his bills and he can leave and go UFA without making up the salary. To me a contract should force a player to play a minimum of 50 games or healthy scatches
- Senet1 : Jagr is a strange player, lots of talent but he has lost his heart and all it is about is money. Edmonton would be better off using the money elsewhere.
- goalie : Rumor has it that the Oilers will be signing Jaromir Jagr to a very $$$$ 3 year contract. Makes sense because Jagr doesn't really want to play on a team that is a contender....so Oilers are a good possibility.
- goalie : I agree with Senet. Plex has been our best player this year. He hasn't been hurt for any long periods and he has done the job. He deserves to be our highest paid player. I sure hope that Markov rebounds next year. I find the Russian players very hard to read as to how they like it on a team and what their plans are going to be.
- Senet1 : To me it is hard not to pay Plex at least Cammy's money. He won't score as many goals but game in and game out Plex has been there and really, he has stayed healthy????
- Mats Naslund : Kesler $5m for 6 years.. 1 point seperates him and Plex in the standings.. Pretty good benchmark?
- Mats Naslund : I guess La presse is reporting that PG is talking extension with Markov's people.
- Mats Naslund : Boston and NY did us a huge solid last night by blowing it. 1 point out of 5th with 11 games to go.
- Mats Naslund : Might be a little sneaky, but what if we made Markov the captain - he would have a hard time leaving as a UFA. Hammrlik's $$ is Markov's in a year. We'll have the $$ to sign him and another UFA. I think I also like BUF in the first round although Miller scares the bajezus out of me. NJ after that.
- Senet1 : may lose him to UFA?? We make up the cap space with Laraque's salary, and the trade of one of are large defenceman salaries.
- Senet1 : There are four contracts that are a must for our GM needs to get done. Plek we need to give him a raise say $5.5M Our two goalies each in the neighbourhood $3M but perhaps the more important contract is Markov's he is not a UFA this year but if we agreed to renegoitate his contract a year earlier for say a raise to $6M next year and $7M for two more years then we may be able to get hims signed for at least 3 or 4 more years. If we let his contract expire and he become a UFA in 2011 then we may
- Senet1 : In fact I knew that I had to play washington, I would rather take them out in the first round.
- Senet1 : Well the one thing that does not matter is our record against any of these teams during the season. This is a much different team than the one we saw play during the majority of the season. Secondly, if I was going to pick a team to play it would be one with weaker goaltending. Right now if I had to pick it would either be Pittsburg or NJ although Washington can be had if Theodore does not play above his head. I believe that any team that can score 4 goals a game has a chance to beat Washing
- goalie : NJ would be my second choice followed by Pens OR Caps - don't think it much matters. No easy pickings Habs!
- goalie : Well the good news is that we're playing much better now than at times during the year. The Habs MUST play their bestagainst ANY of these teams to have a chance. We lost three staraight to the Pens, the Caps scare me because they have talent, NJ have improved greatly but we have played well vs them. I think we only beat Buf once but all but one game was very close. I guess I'd take my chances vs ther Sabres as I think our style matches up well against them.If we could beat Miller we could win.
- Mats Naslund : Unless we see a miracle, MON will be a 5-8 seed. So who between WAS, PIT, BUF, or NJ do you want in the 1st round?
- Mats Naslund : Metro is 35. I cant see them giving more than 1yr. He definitely deserves a spot next year though.
- Avatar37 : Senet - I agree, Metropolit is impressive and Metro and Moen always seem to come up clutch. I really hope they sign him to a 3-4 year deal.
- goalie : Isn't it a lot more interesting and fun when our team is playing well and on a run!
- Senet1 : So we have a good third line the fourth line is playing responsible hockey and the first line is generating offense as well as controling the play. Plek is playing hard and still managing to get a goal here and there so if Cammy can get back maybe we have four solid lines. Right now Martin is rolling the four lines well and I think we are tiring out the other teams.
- Senet1 : I also am impressed with our fourth line Metro, Lapierre and Darche. They are playing some productive minutes killing time and tieing up the other team in their zone.
- Senet1 : This line sort of reminds me of the Gainey line, they always scored the big goals in tight games. Believe it or not when the game was tied 1-1 I thought is is about time our third line got a goal and a few minutes later they did. It is become a regular thing this line.
- rocky : Moore brings great puck possession in the offensive zone and Segie can finish plays. Nice to watch, they are smoking third lines on other teams right now.
- Senet1 : I agree his brother is working out really well with Moore and Moan. They have offensive abilities and at the same time are very responsible defensively.
- rocky : He has talent you know, but just no intensity or desire for hockey at this stage. He should watch his brother right now and do his best to emulate him.
- rocky : That would s*ck. They should sit his ass.
- Senet1 : Yea I agree, because if not either Pyatt or Darche will be sent back down maybe both?
