Jose Theodore trade rumors

  • Written by Habs BlogHabs Blog 87 Comments87 Comments Comments

The Canadiens road losing streak starts again after the Canadiens failed to beat the lowly Florida Panthers in Miami. The team that started the season 6-0-1 on the road has 1 road win since November 4th. The same story continues. Injuries, inconsistent play and a overall lack of effort and desire to win. If you add that your star and most potent weapon fails to score on a penalty shot then your chance of winning is virtually nil.

Trade rumors have been circling all year since the Habs first loss and Theodore’s first bad goal of the season. That’s normal for Montreal but never have the trade rumors been so loud as now. The Canadiens have a scout watching Colorado Avalanche games. Colorado is in need of a better goaltender, Hmmmm. Are the Canadiens just testing the water or is this just a matter of time?

Recall the Patrick Roy trade to Colorado? The trade the gave them a winning team and 2 stanley cups and gave Montreal the glorious journeyman Martin Rucinsky along with the “Russian Tank” Andrei Kovalenko. Definitely among the worst trades of all time. Whenever you mention Montreal and Colorado your thoughts turn to the deal that ruined the Habs.

Bob Gainey wouldn’t pull anything that stupid would he? If the right names come up there could be a deal. What names could they be? Should the Canadiens deal Theo, who would be our starter? David Abeischer? Someone’s gotta go in their to sweeten the pot and my guess would be Jose Theodore and Mike Ribeiro going at the same time. On the other end Alex Tanguay would have to be in the mix and the other name popping up is Joe Sakic. Despite Theo’s average play he is still a fairly hot property in the NHL and a lot of teams are in need of a goalie. A straight up deal for Tanguay probably isn’t enough. Joe Sakic however is the type you’d expect to see in a Nordiques/Avalanche uniform his whole career much like Yzerman in Detroit. Sakic is getting on in age though and commands a high salary. Could it happen?

If the Canadiens don’t do something to stop their slide (and apparently coaching and their current efforts haven’t done anything) then they will almost be forced to make a deal. The clock is ticking.

I don’t know if trading theo is the answer we are looking for. Goals against us hasn’t been such a huge problem overall; though it would be nice to have a more consistant golie. We are third in the east in goals against which isn’t too shabby. Goal scoring, on the other hand, has been an issue. We are thirteenth in the east for this and we only have two more than last place pittsburgh and one more than washington.
of course it would be nice to be leading the league in both of these categories but not everyone can be like this years ottawa team. if we could start putting more pucks in the net then we could start to climb the standings once again.

Joe Sakic and Alex Tanguay could help that.

for sure. without a doubt, but if we get rid of theo and don’t get another ‘good’ golie in return then it will result in more goals being scored against us. huet wasn’t exactly stellar when he played and price is no where near ready. if we’ve given up on the present team and are thinking toward the future then we probably shouldn’t be investing in sakic. he’s probably my favorite player in the NHL so i’d love to see him in a habs uniform but he’s getting old and probably won’t be around by the time this hypothetical future team would be ready.

theodore is not exactly a Patrick Roy is he???i dont think we should base trading him on poor trades made in the past .I dont think we should worry about him too much playing for another team. There are lots of mediocre goal tenders in the NHL and he is one of them. So, look for a good one and get rid of him. Obviously, he has’nt helped the team this year… time to move on. So do it fast because time is running out.

Theodore should be traded ASAP IMO. What’s his salary now 6 million? Journalists in Montreal are the ones who made him a Star and got him his salary.Press in Montreal made him a Superstar as soon as he beat Boston in the series, what they were hoping to get is another Patrick Roy which is unfortunately not the case, he is not a Constant Goalie like Luongo or Kiprusoff.

As for Ribeiro/Koivu/Dagenais i would also try to get rid of those players.
Ribeiro doesn’t cut it at all, the same applies for Dagenais.Koivu is injured half of the season and had his best years with Montreal, so i think it’s time to move on.

This is my feelings on this situation…Theo is not really the problem. He’s no Roy that’s for sure, but Montreal has always had a problem not having a couple superstars on their team. Montreal of late really only has playmakers or defensive style players…never 1 or 2 30-40-50 goal scorers and that is the problem. Montreal needs to keep Theo, and restructure their game plan…it’s always been a defensive style for them for many many years and they will not budge on that style and look what happens. Roy won only 1 Stanley Cup with the Habs and he was the best goalie in history…they trade him to a team that has a few superstars and he wins 2 cups in a shorter amount of time..why because he has superstars that can put the puck in the net…Montreal can’t. So Gainey needs to focus on getting help in the scoring department!! as well as defensively….dont get me wrong…we need defense, but they don’t have guys that can put the puck in the net consistently…big problem!!!

I dont know about Theo being the problem or not, however I do know that Bonk, Ribero and Zednik are currently a problem for montreal. Zednik knows one offensive move (the one hander, Ribero is to lazy (you can sometimes see him glidfe on the ice instead of skating and gets hammered by a big player from the opposing team) and Bonk just plainly sucks (especially considering his salary). Furthermore, nobody on the team knows how to hit, besides Begin. On the last game against Ottawa, Kovalev got noticably attacked by Neil and Havlat, what did the habs do to protect their star player? nothing! not one thing. Hence, I think if we were to trade Riero, Zednik Bonk or Theo, lets take people who can hit hard, like bertuzzi for instance. I personally think that’s way we lost agaisnt Colorado.

I even considered , for a moment, to ditch Claude Julien and put Bob Gainy as the coach (like he did in Dallas). Or maybe even Patrick Roy (apparently, Demers admitted that Roy was doing everythong in the team, from fixing the lines to pumping the players up… so maybe even if its never going to happen, it would have been interesting to see the outcome.
(I went to see the Canadiens game when playing against the Ducks and rejean houle was sitting right next to me, I had this big urge to hit him , but his grnadchild was right there with him, so i restrained myself :) )

    Waiting for trade…

I really think the time as come for Theo to leave Montreal. Unfortunately, he will probably have more success elsewhere, like many other players, we all know the song…

Chances are he will be trade for a poor goalie or good offence and it would be time for Canadien’s organisation to push their recru (Danis) in the arene as a second goaltender.

theo is still a good goalie. i think his problem has more to do with off ice issues. he seems very introverted (i know, he’s not the first introverted goalie,) but it has got to be hard to deal with being the #1 goalie in montreal AND having your family going what it must be going through (think of yours) with his father and brothers. a chance to get out of the city may be great for him. he could have a resergance or become felix potvin. therefore i think that a trade is inevitable and that we should get something of great value in return, and not just move him. but what? bundle up ribero and bonk, keep koiuvu; who becomes #1, huet? or do they get luongo? who else? Garon?

Ok we’ev been extremely patient to this point, but enough is enough! If theo has family issues or weither or not he’s too occupied spending his $5.5 million is not the issue…He’s paid the big bucks to perform despite any and all distractions family related or not!The big issue right now is that with the cap in place there are very few teams that would even pretend to show interest in him. However, all is not lost .why? Because at this point the majority of his salary this year has already been absorbed by the habs, and this is also the last year of his contract. So knowing that there are a few teams that NEED a playoff proven netminder ex: (Vancouver)We could still make a few decent moves and wind up in a better situation. My suggestion, trade Zednik and ribeiro to buffalo for Biron (who is now a proven #1 even though he spends most nights on the bench) send theo to vancouver for bertuzzi! And watch things turn around..Maybe even make the playoffs! Theo needs a new home with less pressure, and he’ll find his game again.but in montreal i’m sure he’s doomed!

Actually, Theodore is not in the last year of his contract, he signed a 3 year 16 million dollar contract before the season started, he gets paid 4.5 this year, and the rest is allocated the following two years. So it makes it very difficult to trade away such a bad goltender with such a high salary over the next three years. I say get whatever you can for him.

people think he is a good goalie because he is one. look at the list of past vezina and hart trophy winners. every one of them over the past 20 years have hd very successful careers (roy, gretzky, lemieux, brodeur…)check the list for your self. theo shold be traded not because he is not a good goalie, but because it would be the best thing for him and the team. the issue is who becomes #1 and who do we get for him? one thing that the habs would need would be a long term answer to the goal tending situation and I dont think that garon or biron would be the answer. luongo may be a good solution. maybe we trade him and bonk :) for some muscle and offense, tandam huet and danis and save $$ for free agents.

Why don’t the Habs pick up Cechmanek, who’s playing in the European leagues now? He’d be almost free and he’s a great goalie who never got a real chance in the NHL… that’d give Danis some time to develop and wouldn’t put all the pressure on Huet to be a starter, something I don’t think he can handle in the long term…

HE’S AT HIS MAX IN POTENTIAL, HE’S TURNED AROUND AT LEAST TWICE A GAME AND WITH THE EXCEPTION OF ZEDNIK HE’S GOT ABSOLUTELY NO DISCEPLINE WHATSOEVER,HE’S ALWAYS TAKING THE DUMB PENALTY AT THE WORST TIME!!ALL I WANT IS WHAT’S BEST FOR MY TEAM. Colorado needs a goalie, Habs need scoring. I wonder if a Theo for Tanguay trade would work? Look at Tanguary, there is no more under rated guy in the NHL. He is like 10th in scoring in the NHL and didn’t even get his name tossed around for the Olympic roster. Just imagine it now…Kovalev, Koivu & Tanguay on the same line. That would bring scoring to Montreal. As for goaltending, let the young boys like Huet, Denis and Price have a chance to get some experience as a #1. They are future, and think what that could do for unloading salary and bring another good much needed defenseman to Montreal. Seems to me like a no brainer deal, see ya Theo….

First off #7 SAVAGE I don’t know how much of a Hab’s fan you are? or how old you are?
But, Patrick Roy won 2 cups with Montreal not “1″. He won a cup in 1986 with 9 rookies + was the playoff MVP.
He won the second in 1993 with a bag of pucks + was the MVP, and took his team to the final in 1989.
Patrick’s team did not have “superstars” but he did have a bunch of hard nose pluggers with a lot of HEART.

Did you notice when Bonk is killing a penalty he is in to deep and is not covering he’s pointman. Send this bum to the minors if nobody wants him. Better yet buy out his contract.

    I agree scotia,
Bertuzzi would be a nice fit at RW. At the same time get rid of contracts like Sundstrom, Bonk, Theodore & Ribiero.
Sign a great 2nd line centre like Jokinen, Allison or my favorite Brad Richards and we’re on the way. Montreal still needs a “supersar” defender like a Redden, Jovo, Pronger or Niedermayer to make serious run for the cup. If we can land one of those big fish watch out.

thefourthperiod.com suggests that Ribiero is being used as trade bait, Gainey wants Jokinen, Bell or Richards.

Save it for the Shire frodo!!!If you were personally paying him $5,000,000 To be an integral part of your business..and he performed as poorly as he has for as long as he has!! Well, either you’d get rid of him, or you both better start looking for work..Like it or not Hockey is a business first and a sport second! And as far as business goes..short of theo coming back from the break, winning every game, and taking us to at least the second round of the playoffs…HE’S GOTTA GO!!!

I wouldn´t mind if the Habs get rid of Theo. He isn´t exactly the kind of man you want between the pipes novadays. I saw some of his games last year here in Sweden and he wasn´t showing much of his NHL skills in Elitserien. If we could get a deal with another club and perhaps get a pair of players that will crack the lineup I would be the first to shout: -YES!

Get hom out of Bell Centre now!

Marcuskoivu is the funniest person in this blog….BONK IS A PIECE OF ****. When he is on the ice, its like the canadiens are a man short. If the canadiens trade him, they dont even have to get a pack of gum…just get rid of the guy.

And as far as Theodore oges, even if they did trade him who would take him? A team like St.Louis? First of all everybody know they are NOT gonna make the playoffs and second of all, WHO WOULD THEY GET? If the team sucks, its because of all the players. Mabye they would trade him to ottawa…ya right! Who would ottawa get rid of? Heatly, Redden of HASEK??? PLZ, come on…

I just can’t wait for Olympic hockey to be over so that I can see Bonk play again. I know MarcusKoivu feels the same way. Poetry on ice, dude. Pure magic.

Jose Theodore has been one of the top goalies in the NHL for the last 5 years. Montreal learned from that horrible Patrick Roy trade, not to trade your superstar goalie I hope! I am sure that Theodore will get back to his old form once his broken ankle heals, he just needs some of his old confidence back, and stupid Hab fans that constantly insult him and that want him traded are not helping that for sure! Go cheer for the Leafs if you hate Theodore!

I’d be all for keeping Theo, but how do you “bounce back” when you get booed at your own arena?
I think that Habs “fans” have made a comeback an impossibility.

I think we should be asking if you guys are Toronto fans? Have you not watched any of the games this year. We may not make the playoffs this year because they played Theodore so much. Have you seen how fantastic Huet has played. One of the top goalies the for the past 5 years…start watching the games!!! Get your heads out of your asses!!!

Let’s not be like Leaf Fans and START supporting whoever is winning.
Huet is the main man. That stop in front of the net tonight against Florida was awesome.
This is his team now and his job to lose. Theodore has been playing like **** for the past 2 seasons.
We were all over him in 2004 did we forget? His crappy play has continued this year. Fact is Fact.
Huet reminds me of the 2002 Theodore, catching on fire late and going on to win Hart and Vezina.
He very well might take this damn team to the finals if he keeps this up. I have no problem with that!

    GO HABS GO!

Big game against the leafs tonight chnace to increase the gap. Alright game in Philly last night managed to walk away with a point and were down by 2 late in the third. Back to business, how would Gonchar look in a Habs uniform. Imagine Markov and Gonchar holding down the blueline. Apparently Pittsburgh’s willing to get rid of him. Theodore, Dandenault, for Fleury, Gonchar. While they’re at it the trade deadline is coming up in 2 days. Maybe we could make a blockbuster trade……………Bonk for a 14th rounder and the trainer from San Jose, no we’d never get that. OK Bonk for the trainer.

now we have money for a forward with size (other than ribeiro, koivu, and the other midgets). i say go for tzachuk and i dont mean daniel. bertuzzi could be aiight. unfortunately the asking price is probably way too high for those inconsistent players
