Michael Ryder and the French Media

The Canadiens blew a golden chance yesterday. Atlanta and Toronto both lost leaving the Canadiens a last place team to beat at home in order to secure 2 more points in the playoff race. They failed. For the 3rd time. Aebischer played poorly and the Canadiens didn’t help. It’s once again obvious to see, without Andrei Markov the team is not even half as good.

The real story was the injury to Francis Bouillon. Crashed heavily into the boards and taken away on a stretcher. It looks like there is no break but they are unsure of his status. If it happens to be serious and sideline him for anything more than a couple games - it could be lights out for the Habs. Bouillon is pound for pound the toughest Canadien. He plays way bigger than his size and is very important to the defence. Unhealthy Markov and Bouillon is not good news. It also means Todd Simpson is likely to play his first game as a Canadien.

If you watch the game on RDS have you noticed the french broadcasters singling out Michael Ryder game after game as the reason for the Habs losses or poor play? Every time Ryder touches the puck or misses a shot or does anything but score a goal they’re all over him.

Is Ryder in a bit of a slump? Yes. Is he alone responsible for the team losing? NO. Is he still the highest goal scorer on the Canadiens? YES. Does he put up more goals and points than players paid much more than he? YES. Is Ryder an 8th round (216 overall pick) Calder Trophy finalist who has far exceeded his expectations? YES. Is he from Newfoundland and not Quebec? YES.

To attack Michael Ryder must be easy for Yvon Pedenault. Ryder isn’t a french name.
I don’t recall the same criticism for the Canadiens floating frenchmen this season.

Where was the Mathieu Dandenault commentary when he was -500 and scored 0 goals for 80% of the season? Where was and is the Mike Ribeiro trashing? Where is the Pierre Dagenais criticism? Oh wait he doesn’t even play in the league anymore. Did they pick on Jose Theodore and blame him when he was 100% obviously the reason the Canadiens lost so many games this year? No. It was ‘un manque de concentration’. Where’s the criticism on the countless number of squandered Quebecois draft picks over the past 15 years? It’s non-existent.

But…..watch out if Ryder missed the net though because that’s the reason and the only reason the Canadiens are struggling for 8th spot.

You are so right, that is the problem. I am not french myself and i have nothing against french people, infact two of my good friends are french but as far as the habs go they supported theo when it was plain to see he was not the goalie he once was but abbey plays two games and we should burn him on the cross. This is how it is in montreal. Ribearo is weak and floats most of the time but in montreal he is god.I would take a 100 ryders over 1 ribearo anyday. Its funny to see that how koivu, kovalev, ryder, are always being bashed by the french media.People need to realize that it is a french city not a french team there has to be a mix.

I’ve watched every Habs game this year and I disagree about the anti-English comment. While Ryder has been going through some more than tough times and has been critized by the announcers, so have Koivu and Ribiero. They were also on Theodore when he didn’t perform. I believe Ribiero and Theodore are both French. Your perception is obsviously biased. You may want to ask yourself why. Additionally, Aebischer has only played 2 games for Montreal as of March 19th.

I agree 100%, leave Ryder alone and pick on someone who needs to be woken up like Ribiero.

Ryder is exactly what he is, a 30 goal scorer with a lot of heart. Hopefully Gainey puts him back up with Koivu this week because that’s where he belongs.

      Any word on Markov?

5 games in 7 days starting tomorrow. This is going to be a rough week. Both Huet and Aebischer are going to have to come up with some great games.

I think if they all put in effort like Ryder does they would be a better team.

I disagree that they are or were ‘on’ Ribeiro or Koivu as much as Ryder. Listen close this week. Koivu hasn’t scored in ages and they never call him out. There’s also been plenty of French players that are underperforming.

Its ok because he’s tired from the Olympic break right? They make easy excuses for certain players.

Maybe they just don’t like Ryder which is fine. Perhaps they expect more from him, because they were used to him being the only real goal scorer on the team. Even at the beginning of the year in the first 5 games when Ryder was scoring it was all ‘luck’ and ‘bonne fortune’.

Michael Ryder will be the only Canadien to score 30 goals. More than I think he deserves more credit than he gets.

It’s a confidence problem. If you watch Ryder with the puck he second guess’ himself. Instead of his usual quick release he holds the puck to long. If he doesn’t start scoring we’re in trouble. We can’t expect Souray to score 2 goals every game. As for the French thing I think it’s time to leave that alone. Montreal is more of a European community, nevermind French. The Montreal media is over anyone that is not performing including Theodore and Ribeiro. We will lose to Washington tonight and both Leaf games Thursday and Saturday (we just can’t beat them). Deep down inside we all know how this story will end. Until the Habs get some size (Bertuzzi), goalscoring (Help for Ryder)) and a #1 defensemen (Redden) we will always continue to suffer. Living outside of Toronto It eats me alive to lose to the Leafs!

I agree. I hear it. The French commentators are also a little more likely to complain about non-francophone Europeans.
But it’s not so much the insult directed TOWARD non-francophones that interests me so much as the EXCUSES MADE for the francophones en francais.
But really, if everyone were playing a little better, this wouldn’t have to be a problem…

Ok, I’ll be honest, I’m a Bruins Fan. Our management/Ownership sucks. Jeremy Jacobs is an ass, and it will be a very long time before we win another cup. As they Say In Québec, C’est Tout Fucké! Anyway, I’d just like to express my passionate hatred for Whine-Bag Ribeiro, what a freakin’ pansy! MR. Flop around on the ice and pretend to be injured for a stoppage in the playoffs: PATHETIC! Oww..ooww..you speared me..after taking a cheap shot to Boynton, and then skating away, man what a baby. You Montréal fans should kick his ass too, HE disgraces the hallowed history of your franchise.

You’re right. Sinden’s lost it a long time ago. Things started tanking when Neely retired. Thornton had no one to play with. Now they sign a goalie that’s totally unproven,.. for wicked cash? It’s a watershed moment now for the likes of the Leafs and Bruins. Watching and enjoying a sport is one thing, but the cream for me is about the rivalries that span darn near epochs as do the ones that exist between the CHC, Bruins, Leafs and formerly the Nordiques (RIP). It’s just not the same as watching Columbus or Pheonix et al. As much as I hate the B’s and Buds,.. I have to say that it’s disconcerting that once proud organisations have been floundering in recent years. The Habs are no exception. But having Gainey, Carbo and a supporting cast of (fresher) ex-Habs front and centre, was the best thing Gillet’s done since buying the joint.

BTW - I’d just like to express my hatred of.. well, the Bruins I guess.
