Cristobal Huet vs David Aebischer
-
One of the first questions Canadiens management will have to answer is the goaltender situation.
David Aebischer stated that he wants to stay in Montreal but only if he can be a #1 and start 50 or 60 games.
Cristobal Huet is up for a contract renewal and he surely deserves a raise over his $456 000 modest salary. When Bob Gainey traded Jose Theodore for David Aebsicher it was first speculated that Aebischer was just part of a larger deal that would soon follow. He was not and the Canadiens competed down the stretch with 2 “startable” goaltenders . Aebischer did see some minor action and received major criticism after a slow start.
What will the Habs do? If Aebischer is making demands and the Canadiens management feel better about Cristobal Huet as their #1 then Aebischer may be packed up and shipped out in the off season. With confidence in Yann Danis and Carey Price further down the line the Habs goaltending future is the least of their concerns.
Yann Danis could back up Cristobal Huet at the start of the next season and fill in the backup role quite nicely.Aebischer could still be a hot commodity for teams desperate for goaltending and maybe packaged with some of the more expandable Canadiens be good enough to acquire a real player in return.
Can you see the Canadiens snubbing Cristobal Huet and starting next season with David Aebischer? Doubtful.

- Senet1 : I agree, Carey needs to get some starts if they leave him out much longer he will be ineffective in the Playoffs, I really thought it was time to play him against TO but coach chose otherwise. Halak is not used to playing so many games in a row, whereas North Am. goalies are.
- goalie : Though I have supported Halak a lot this year, the decision was to keep both goalies. So, I really hope that Carey too is playing well going into the playoffs, that we make the playoffs and both goalies are at the top of their game. Put Carey in for the next few games and see how he plays!
- Senet1 : bigger that he covers more of the net. Being bigger price tends to loose the puck in his feet, most tall goalies have that problem. But is is one that more experience helps them improve on that weakness. With two more years of development Price is still the goalie of the future, if not the present.
- Senet1 : Well the more HALAK plays the more other teams will find his weaknesses and if he does not improve on those weakness he will not be as affective in a long run. I have notived that last three games that the goals scored on him many of the shooters are going high on him. Being a smaller goalie he is more vulnerable. Don't be surprised if Halak only onl makes it part way through a playoff series and then Price will be back in net. Price weakness is also high shots but he is so much bigger that h
- Senet1 : I have to admit I am over joyed at no ndgatives coming out of this game. One thing I could not figure out, when Gomez and Gionta saw AK46 deek the TO goalie and go 5 hole why they didn't try the same thing is beyond me. That is obviously his weakness. Goalie I am concerned about that too , only good part about it there aRE NO SHOOTOUTS IN THE PLAYOFFS.
- goalie : I am more than a little concerned that the Lafs exposed Halak's inability to stop a player who dekes to Halak's glove hand side. He played those dekes very poorly.
- rocky : The leafs played a strong game and have some pretty deadly shootout threats. We did not lose anyone to injury and that game could have went either way. Now how is that for a positive spin on things eh?
- rocky : I hate to admit this, but I think Andrei Kostitsyn is poised to break his slump. He still skates like a turd, but I just have a feeling. If we get out of this game with no major injuries to key players I will be happy win or lose.
- Senet1 : Mst's I think if they can sign Markov to an extension then they can make move on some of the other defenceman before they become UFA. Hammer is a prime example and likewise so is Gil. Somehow I feel that there is something wrong with a one year contract like Mara's where he can be paid for not playing due to injury and then the team pays his bills and he can leave and go UFA without making up the salary. To me a contract should force a player to play a minimum of 50 games or healthy scatches
- Senet1 : Jagr is a strange player, lots of talent but he has lost his heart and all it is about is money. Edmonton would be better off using the money elsewhere.
- goalie : Rumor has it that the Oilers will be signing Jaromir Jagr to a very $$$$ 3 year contract. Makes sense because Jagr doesn't really want to play on a team that is a contender....so Oilers are a good possibility.
- goalie : I agree with Senet. Plex has been our best player this year. He hasn't been hurt for any long periods and he has done the job. He deserves to be our highest paid player. I sure hope that Markov rebounds next year. I find the Russian players very hard to read as to how they like it on a team and what their plans are going to be.
- Senet1 : To me it is hard not to pay Plex at least Cammy's money. He won't score as many goals but game in and game out Plex has been there and really, he has stayed healthy????
- Mats Naslund : Kesler $5m for 6 years.. 1 point seperates him and Plex in the standings.. Pretty good benchmark?
- Mats Naslund : I guess La presse is reporting that PG is talking extension with Markov's people.
- Mats Naslund : Boston and NY did us a huge solid last night by blowing it. 1 point out of 5th with 11 games to go.
- Mats Naslund : Might be a little sneaky, but what if we made Markov the captain - he would have a hard time leaving as a UFA. Hammrlik's $$ is Markov's in a year. We'll have the $$ to sign him and another UFA. I think I also like BUF in the first round although Miller scares the bajezus out of me. NJ after that.
- Senet1 : may lose him to UFA?? We make up the cap space with Laraque's salary, and the trade of one of are large defenceman salaries.
- Senet1 : There are four contracts that are a must for our GM needs to get done. Plek we need to give him a raise say $5.5M Our two goalies each in the neighbourhood $3M but perhaps the more important contract is Markov's he is not a UFA this year but if we agreed to renegoitate his contract a year earlier for say a raise to $6M next year and $7M for two more years then we may be able to get hims signed for at least 3 or 4 more years. If we let his contract expire and he become a UFA in 2011 then we may
- Senet1 : In fact I knew that I had to play washington, I would rather take them out in the first round.
- Senet1 : Well the one thing that does not matter is our record against any of these teams during the season. This is a much different team than the one we saw play during the majority of the season. Secondly, if I was going to pick a team to play it would be one with weaker goaltending. Right now if I had to pick it would either be Pittsburg or NJ although Washington can be had if Theodore does not play above his head. I believe that any team that can score 4 goals a game has a chance to beat Washing
- goalie : NJ would be my second choice followed by Pens OR Caps - don't think it much matters. No easy pickings Habs!
- goalie : Well the good news is that we're playing much better now than at times during the year. The Habs MUST play their bestagainst ANY of these teams to have a chance. We lost three staraight to the Pens, the Caps scare me because they have talent, NJ have improved greatly but we have played well vs them. I think we only beat Buf once but all but one game was very close. I guess I'd take my chances vs ther Sabres as I think our style matches up well against them.If we could beat Miller we could win.
- Mats Naslund : Unless we see a miracle, MON will be a 5-8 seed. So who between WAS, PIT, BUF, or NJ do you want in the 1st round?
- Mats Naslund : Metro is 35. I cant see them giving more than 1yr. He definitely deserves a spot next year though.
- Avatar37 : Senet - I agree, Metropolit is impressive and Metro and Moen always seem to come up clutch. I really hope they sign him to a 3-4 year deal.
- goalie : Isn't it a lot more interesting and fun when our team is playing well and on a run!
- Senet1 : So we have a good third line the fourth line is playing responsible hockey and the first line is generating offense as well as controling the play. Plek is playing hard and still managing to get a goal here and there so if Cammy can get back maybe we have four solid lines. Right now Martin is rolling the four lines well and I think we are tiring out the other teams.
- Senet1 : I also am impressed with our fourth line Metro, Lapierre and Darche. They are playing some productive minutes killing time and tieing up the other team in their zone.
- Senet1 : This line sort of reminds me of the Gainey line, they always scored the big goals in tight games. Believe it or not when the game was tied 1-1 I thought is is about time our third line got a goal and a few minutes later they did. It is become a regular thing this line.
- rocky : Moore brings great puck possession in the offensive zone and Segie can finish plays. Nice to watch, they are smoking third lines on other teams right now.
- Senet1 : I agree his brother is working out really well with Moore and Moan. They have offensive abilities and at the same time are very responsible defensively.
- rocky : He has talent you know, but just no intensity or desire for hockey at this stage. He should watch his brother right now and do his best to emulate him.
- rocky : That would s*ck. They should sit his ass.
- Senet1 : Yea I agree, because if not either Pyatt or Darche will be sent back down maybe both?

What if Huet get a BIG contract elsewhere ? We want to keep Huet and he want to stay in montreal but I highly doubt he would refuse a couple of millions from another team, instead of the may be 2-3 millions we will offer him here.
What if Huet can’t play that well next year ? He did a good half-season, nothing more. He was a good goaltender but in some games he didn’t look that much good. He wasn’t looking that good in the last games and in the playoff somtimes he felt like he was not always sure of himself and where the puck was.
Aebischer will have to go somewhere else probably if Huet sign back with Montreal. But we need to be careful, some teams will know about it and will try to get him for barely nothing. I hope Gainey won’t let him self trap, I don’t mind if we have to keep it for a part of the season until a team need a goaler and don’t mind to trade it for a big player.
May be someone will like to have him, with Zednik and some other player we don’t need (bonk) ?

This is where Bob Gainey and the rest of the braintrust show their poker-playing abilities. We all know that ideally the Habs would like to re-sign Huet and achieve a great deal for Aebischer (one that allows Abby to start and gives the Habs some positions they need filled).
However, Huet and his agent must be drooling at the opportunity to test the free-agent market. He’s paid his dues and must feel he should cash in: at 30, he doesn’t have a full career left. I would not be surprised for the negotiations to go south quickly if his agent becomes over-aggressive.
The jokers in Gainey’s hands: Abby is good enough to start and the kids are ready within a year or two.
I believe Huet will stay, but it should be interesting how it all goes down.

abbey and zednik to vancouver for bertuzzi lol kidding
May 6, 2006 am31 1:15 am
Huet was amazing this season, but can we afford another bust? Was Huet only this good because it was contract season? I don’t know. The best option is to sign both and trade one of them.
We need to trade 1 of the goalies, Zednik, Sundstrom, Ribeiro and Bulis (free agent) to make a serious run for the cup.
Team needs are:
1. second line centre man (free agent’s that would fit the team) Jason Arnott, Marc Savard or Brad Richards (Ribeiro just sucks. This guy is not Bob Gainey or MTL material)
2. A true #1 D-Man – Redden, Jovo or Chara (would love Jovo. Souray is a liability and only good on the power play. Markov is not consistant and a no show in the playoffs)
3. A “BIG TIME” scoring winger to replace Richer 1989 (it’s only been 17 years since we had a 50 goal scorer)
– Bertuzzi, Selanie or Elias would fit that profile (maybe trade for St.Louis or Vinny in Tampa, they need a goalie)
Bottom line guys we’re not that far away. 3 pieces to the puzzle and start planning the parade. July 1st is FREE AGENCY let’s keep our fingers crossed.

Here’s the new draft:
Dear producers of HNIC:
We, the fans of the most winning and storied professional hockey team in the world’s history, demand a return of our team to the regular CBC national broadcast. Our Canada has never been, and will never be a Leafs’ nation! Les Canadiens should be for all Canadians!
Sincerely,
Your name here
A Habs’ fan
If you have written already, write again! Send it to Hockey Night in Canada (hnic@cbc.ca), the CRTC (www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/contactus.htm) and every other Habs fan that you know! Hell, send it to Ken Dryden while you are at (outreach@kendryden.ca). Let your voice continue to be heard until it is the Habs that are back in the national spotlight.
Oh, to actually respond to the goaltending question! The Habs should try and sign Huet, of course. He was awesome this year, but the Canadiens have also been burnt in the past by placing too much stock in players who have a single good year (ie. Jose Theodore, Stephane Richer, Gary Leeman, etc., etc., etc.) If Huet wants to stay in Montreal, it’s a win-win situation for both. If he wants to break the bank for his excellent half season of goaltending, Gainey should let him go elsewhere. Despite Huet’s excellent season, Huet’s ability to be a franchise goaltender still remains in question, and I not sure that too many teams (particularly with a salary cap in place) would be ready to take the gamble that he is for real. The Canadiens are also already fairly deep when it comes to goaltending (Abby, Danis, Price, etc.)
May 6, 2006 am31 1:38 pm
By the way, Aebischer is no slouch either. In his six starts with the Canadiens, HE won four, and was named a Molson game star on four occasions also. He won his last three regular seasons starts against the likes of Buffalo and Ottawa. It is true that he looked pretty shaky in a couple games against the Penguins, but even then, he did win one of those games. I wouldn’t really characterize Aebischer’s performance with the Habs as a “slow start.”
May 6, 2006 am31 7:32 pm
The management is upset w/ Huet after the way he blew the series. He will be gone. Aebischer will lead the Habs to another Cup.
May 6, 2006 am31 9:59 pm
Nick …get a life one with purpose…like maybe bird watching.. basketball mowing grass or something other then watching hockey…jeez what a stupid comment.
May 6, 2006 am31 10:03 pm
The Canadiens WIll move Aebischer for better gain .Gainey has already said there is no room for two starters and will do his best to sign Huet.
May 6, 2006 am31 11:45 pm
Nick- nice comment ‘aebischer will lead the habs to another cup.’ thats as unlikely as it is for Huet to leave Montreal
May 7, 2006 am31 9:11 am
How did huet blow the series for us? Is it because he stops 40 shots a night? Nice try but hab fans are a little smarter than leaf fans. Go post on the tml site buddy.
May 7, 2006 am31 11:51 am
I don’t think Huet blow the series for us, but I was expecting, he wins the series for us. Maybe it’s too much to ask for him, but judging how he played during the regular season, it wasn’t impossible.
Given the real need for good goaltending around the league, I think Huet can get 3-4 mil with free agency. Gainey, I think will not go more than 2.5, given that he can easily sign Aebischier for 2.0 mil. Incidently, Gainey did not think Theodore was worth the 4.5 mil he gave him, but did it because there was nobody else to replace Theodore. Right now Gainey has options, and I don;t think he is willing to give 3+ mil to an unproven goaltender.
Huet needs to decide how much he likes montreal. If money is more important to him than playing in montreal, we will lose him. Kovalev has to make a similar decision in sept 2005 and obviously picked montreal.
I think Huet will stay in Montreal. We should sign him for 2.5 mil / year for 2 years.
May 7, 2006 am31 12:18 pm
I think he will be in the range of 2 mil to 2.5 mil no more no less.Any more than 2.5 will be crazy and very risky.Gainey wont make the same mistake twice.Dont get me wrong i love huet but show me a full season of play under a new contract.
May 7, 2006 am31 6:25 pm
2 mil a year sounds about right.I do believe Aebischer is great trade bate..there are a lot of teams need a quality goaltender.
May 7, 2006 am31 11:19 pm
Should be an interesting summer all around for trades. I realy think we should sign Huet. Not for the money thrown around here though. Maybe a Mil + bonuses for the first year (200 grand for 40 wins) but definately not for 2+ million for the first year. It should be incentive based. I saw Abeischer play. I wasn’t impressed at all. This guy doesn’t work his angles and he’s slow, period. Cut him loose. Dannis is very good and he played well while Huet was out. Price is still a year or so away.
As for free agent signing… why not Sundin? or even Markus Naslund? (will he retire this year?) There’s going to be loads of quality players available this summer because of the lock-out year and prior obligations and contracts. I have a feeling that individually, many free agent players want a change of scenery and they’ll sign with clubs you’d never thought they’d go to. Overall.. teams will want to get speedier players. Nonetheless, Gainey’s a person who takes his time and bases his descisions objectively and in the context of what will make the team better…. so you just might see alot of familiar faces back on the team next season, with a few surprise additions.
Bertuzzi who? No thanks.
May 9, 2006 am31 5:54 pm
Nice comment pactum serva… your right huet did not blow the series for us he did his best and if the players would have played good on game # 3 and 4 we could have swept the canes off the playoffs… we had a 2-0 lead and we put it to waste??? but now for another comment i truly believe that people who say bad things about ribeiro have no right to do so because he led our team in scoring in 2003-2004 and i truly believe that he has the potential and the takent to stay with the mtl canadians… he just needs the chance to show his true talent… the chance that he needs is the oppurtunity to stay with his favorite and home town team… he can make a difference if he’s placed with the right trio.I also think that trading huet would be the biggest mistake gainey would ever do because huet is the one who actually gave us a shot in the playoff season… but this is just my opinion… i think that we should trade bulis cuz he doesn’t even want to be with us anyway and he’s no good and we should also trade sundstrom and streit / they are the ones with no talent and the ones who should be traded… not mike ribeiro
May 10, 2006 am31 5:26 pm
I think the Habs should Huet for a month or two into the next season and see how he does.
May 10, 2006 am31 5:29 pm
I think the Habs should keep Huet for a month or two into the next season and see how he does. whoops.
May 11, 2006 am31 2:04 am
mel (#1 fan) Mike Ribeiro had his chance. When Koivu went down mid-season he was promoted to the 1st line and failed. When he was rolling around on the ice in the 2003 playoffs like he got hit by a bus, The Rocket was rolling in his grave. Please DO NOT defend a guy like this, how dare you! You clearly have no idea what it takes to be a HAB if you cheer for Ribeiro idiot.
May 11, 2006 am31 5:38 pm
stop being soooo rood Mr stevejur ribeiro is a good guy and player for the habs with a big heart and potential i truly believe that he can make a difference if he is placed with the right players in the right trio… and i’m not defending him cuz nomatter what i say it’s not going to make a diffrence it’s gainey and carbonneau and hopefully they make the right decision to keep mike ribeiro and richard zednik…
other than riberio who do you think should leave the habs team???? please answer back… thanks i love ribeiro hahaha
May 12, 2006 am31 1:27 am
….mel, out with Ribeiro, Zednik, Bulis and Sundstrom. These guys are no use to us.
Replace Ribeiro with either Richards, Arnott or Sakic
Replace Zednik, Sundstrom and Bulis with Elias, Bertuzzi, Selannie etc. the list is long.
We’re almost there, but I’m sorry Ribeiro will not be here next season.
May 19, 2006 am31 3:59 pm
i still miss theo…..he was my hero:(
May 23, 2006 am31 7:18 pm
I can not see the Canadians starting off with anyone other than Huet in goal. It would be nice for them to have Aebischer as a back up but they will still do nicely without him. Their main foal should be to secure Cristobal Huet for as many years as they can. He is a great talent with a lot of good years ahead of him. I have seen Aebischer play a few times and am not overly impressed. He has his moments like so many other so-so goaltenders but not the consistency. Stick with Huet.
June 3, 2006 am31 5:33 am
David Aebischer is the best!!!!!
