Mark Streit signs 2 year deal
-
Tha Habs have signed Mark Streit to a 2 year contract.

Streit came over midway last season and was described as an ‘offensively minded’ skilled and speedy defenceman. Streit was intended to be a power play specialist but when arriving had some trouble adjusting to the speed and skill of the NHL. Powerplay specialist he was not, nor a defensively sound player.
Streit was a healthy scratch several times down the stretch of the season but when injuries and other cirumstances gave him a chance to play he began improving slowly. Streit continued improving right up until the end of the season which he will hopefully be able to continue doing next fall.
Streit is Captain of the Swiss National team and anyone who watched the 2006 Olympics noticed the he was the dominant force on that team and played very well. Fans got a glimpse of what Canadiens scouts must have seen before bringing him over.
Streit is a 5th or 6th defenceman and can fill a certain role on the Canadiens. Hopefully with a little more NHL experience under his belt he will continue to improve and contribute to the team.

- nilan : D'Agostini looked like an NHLer saturday night. Thats more than I can say for the last 2 seasons of latendresse. For what its worth, I think its too soon to talk trades- this is a WAY talented team, but only have a handful of guys playing with heart. Oh, and I like Komisarek on the ice better than behind the bench!
- Habs Blog : flu kicked my ass
- Mats Naslund : *the pros. These players just need to step it up. They did it last year.
- Mats Naslund : I would agree that having Markov as the point shot on the PP has been a failure. He is much more effective as a set up man. The Habs could absolutely use the Souray and Streit type shot on the point (but they couldn't afford to keep those guys). It would be nice if someone from within could fill that spot, be it Tanguay, Lang or Andrei Kostitsyn or whoever. Sergei played that spot on the PP with Kane and Gagner in Junior and lit it up. I'm not sure if he has the velocity to make it happen in t
- habs#1fan : All I was saying is that I myself believe we need those players (the centerman and the D-man) to help us now. I'm no expert by no means, am I wrong? Quite possibly. But that D-man would help our struggling PP. This team is deep in prospects which would make a deal easier to do. But yeah given the team's record so far maybe status quo would be best. GO HABS GO
- Mats Naslund : I think this would be a terrible time to make a trade. We need to see these players handle this adversity. To get value you need to trade value, and right now its a buyers market in Montreal. If there are team needs closer to the playoffs then Gainey will have to make a move, but don't sell the farm in desperation.
- habs#1fan : I know everyone is sick of hearing this including myself, however I do think the time to make a deal would be now. I don't know who is on the block but we still need another center and a PP D-man with a big shot. We have got a lot of good prospects, Max Pac, Chipchura, Maxwell, White, D'Agostini not to mention the junior and college players.
- Senet1 : Well I understand your thinking groundworking, I guess I just choose to look at this team as a team that will build to the playoffs. I do not necessarily see us finishing first in the division but Carbo has to prepare them for the PO. I just hope that I am right!
- groundworking : I hope you're right, Senet, and positive attitudes never hurt. I guess my problem is that I don't see the rough stretch in the win/loss column as the main concern, but also the lack of effort in many of the games that they won early--squeaking out wins against lesser opponents, often in shootouts, and without much help from the PP. The killer instinct and the "something to prove" edge that they had last year just hasn't seemed to be there, with two exceptions: a pre-season against Detroit
- PACTUM SERVA : Dave morissette looks like a monkey lol.
- Senet1 : With due respect groundworking, I think you are jumping the gun. If we are going to panic everytime our team has a bad stretch then we might as well pack it in. This team is better than last years team on paper, they are just struggling right now. Let's stay positive. After a bad performance last night this is a game that the players may have started to doubt themselves. A win is a win and we always have had trouble with Buffalo.
- groundworking : I hate to be negative, but I broke down, watched the game, and I'm still panicked, lol--Buffalo is a weak team, they were 3-6-3 in their last ten, and this was a hard fought game by the Habs, at home, after a bad outing the night before...oh, and S. Kostitsyn took two selfish penalties...and the PP didn't score on a 5-3 for two mins. Sorry to be so negative. I just think they don't have it this year
- Senet1 : If Carbo has lost the dressing room then these guys do not deserve to be in the NHL, he coaches the way he plays and he would not ask anyone to do something that he would not do. The players better get over it. Maybe based on tonight they are starting to get the point??
- Mats Naslund : MUCH better 2nd period tonight. Almost looks like the Canadiens we've been looking for for a month. Great goal by Markov from Koivu. We should always play 4 on 4.
- PACTUM SERVA : GO HABS GO
- groundworking : I expect a decent effort tonight, and then I expect them to choke the next game and possibly the game after that. Someone suggested that Carbo's lost the dressing room. That's a good point. Hard to say. Something's wrong, though. I plan NOT to watch the game, as I've just been getting frustrated this year with their play (unlike the last two years).
- habs#1fan : Carbo demotes the Kostitsyns to the fourth line but yet he leaves Latalentless (to quote Mr Pactum lol) on the second line? Now cmon Guy, I know he's got the same name as you and all but he hasn't done squat to be on the second line. Did that guy even play last night? Then again who really did? Glad to see D'Agostini play maybe bring some energy and fight
- flyinghab : I don't even want to talk about tonite's game ... it can be also be ugly in front of the home crowd. Carbo is becoming a broken record with his speeches now. Has he lost the dressing room ?
- flyinghab : Last year was an extremely lucky year. No injuries, kovy on good year ( 1 outta 4 ), therefore the habs were a bunch of overachievers. This year reality has struck. If we could buy some "heart" Gainey should invest.
- flyinghab : Wow... after watching part of this horrid game, I'm thinking with this team we'll be fortunate to even make the playoffs this year. So sad. Get Bob on the line please.
- PACTUM SERVA : No effort no heart no balls. This team is like watching paint dry. Gutless effort. Maybe their tampons were bothering them tonight.
- Mats Naslund : wow terrible game. i'm not mad right now, i think i'm just revolted. they did nothing for 60 minutes. uninspired, uncoordinated, and unproductive. i didn't even like how carbo coached the game. totally disgusting night.
- VanHab : later
- groundworking : lol agreed -- ill talk to you later
- VanHab : certainly makes for a better Friday night than watching the rest of this horrible game
- groundworking : They've had worse teams, but none that worked less than these guys
- groundworking : I've followed the Habs religiously since 1985, this is the slackest team that they've had since then
- VanHab : lol groundworking
- VanHab : a change has to come and soon
- groundworking : I've stopped watching the game--I posted here to rant and now I'm going to do something I enjoy more, like shovel dog crap off my back lawn
- VanHab : I can't believe we're being shutout by Theodore
- groundworking : Even October when we were winning, the team was just barely squeaking by against some really bad teams
- groundworking : pathetic
- groundworking : no digging for the puck
- VanHab : not the way we've been playing the whole month of November

Good depth re-signing by Gainey. Streit will never be a top four defenceman but he will fill in just fine because of an injury or suspension if Markov decides to push another ref/linesman.
RDS reported that the Dallas stars are willing to trade Jason Arnott’s negotiating rights to Montreal for an 7th/8th round draft pick or something because he really wants out of Dallas and won’t be coming back.
He also apparently would love to play for his friend and old teammmate Guy Carbonneau and for his old boss Bob Gainey. It’s looking like we’ll be saying hello to the best 1-2 punch at centre (Koivu when he get’s back, and he will, with his good chemistry with Ryder and Higgins, and Arnott with Kovalev and a new winger on line #2) that they’ve had in years.

excellent signings…
now focus in on re-signing huet and higgins
also gainey must get either a power centre for the 2nd line, or a power winger on the 2nd line. we need someone to get the puck to kovalev…
if the salary cap coperates, we should also upgrade the defense
souray is only good for his shot, we all know that he is useless one-on-one…
look towards redden/chara from ottawa
HABS ALL THE WAY!!!

THE LATEST CANADIENS NEWS.
RDS.CA: reported last night Minnesota Wild assistant coach Mario Tremblay is seeking a release from the club. The site suggests Tremblay would become the top candidate to become Canadiens head coach Guy Carbonneau’s assistant. The site also cited a rumour in the Boston Globe claiming the Habs and Tampa Bay Lightning have been discussing an important deal over the past several days, leading the site to speculate the talks may have been over Vincent Lecavalier.
Some may question Carbonneau bringing Tremblay back to Montreal considering the latter’s role in driving Patrick Roy out of Montreal ten years ago, but Tremblay has matured since then and learned a lot working for Jacques Lemaire, which would make him a help, not a hindrence, to Carbonneau. As for the trade rumour, I couldn’t find it on the on-line version of the Globe, but it wouldn’t surprise me if the Bolts were interested in goalie David Aebischer. What would surprise me is if Lecavalier were in the mix, considering Bolts GM Jay Feaster said he didn’t want to be known as the man who traded away Lecavalier. If the Bolts were interested in “Abby”, the return would likely be either forward Ruslan Fedotenko or defenceman Darryl Sydor.

I would love to see Kirk Muller as the assistant but whatever Guy Carbonneau decides I will support. As for trade rumours I would love to see Jason Arnott in a habs uni, I’ve always been a big fan of his and he would be a good fit for this team. He would be a good 2nd line center behind Koivu unlike Ribeiro. Ribeiro must go. I also like the posibility of Darryl Sydor coming to Mtl even though I do like our D I think that we need another guy like Sydor on our point. The Habs are doing great and are heading in the right direction and are almost there and I think that next year will be their year with all the great young guys they have coming up. Bring on the draft and free agency!!

Id love to see britney spears as assistant coach. Can you imagine her jumping around with her boobs everytime we score?
June 12, 2006 pm30 3:53 pm
post 5 is a clone again but anyways i would also pick muller for the assistant coach postition i think he would be a great fit even if he doesnt have any experience go habs go
June 13, 2006 pm30 9:13 am
PACTUM SERVA I agree with but muller would learn quickly.Would not like to see Mario Tremblay.
June 13, 2006 pm30 9:52 am
Agreed
June 13, 2006 pm30 9:53 am
Agreed
June 13, 2006 pm30 11:41 am
The energy Muller brings will be a huge benifit to the team… Bring him on … He is by far the best choice between him, Denis Savard and Mario Trembley.
June 13, 2006 pm30 8:12 pm
Savard is already with Chicago management I believe:-)
June 14, 2006 pm30 6:16 pm
What about Larry Robinson?
June 15, 2006 pm30 12:09 pm
Larry Robinson already quit because of the stress. BUT he might not be as as stressfull with his old buddy Gainey.Depends ..then again Montreal is a very exciting and can be and stressfull environment for anyone on the team.Like Gainey sid it is something your are going want and expect if you com to this team.
June 16, 2006 pm30 4:10 pm
Everyone probably has heard already, but Selanne re-upped with Anaheim for another year. I’m not surprised he stayed, but he could only get a year? Bummer that we couldn’t get him…
June 16, 2006 pm30 8:15 pm
One possibility that was mentioned earlier was to go out and get Selanne and Lethinen so that they can play with Koivu. However, they are not too stable (at least Selanne) and could show mediocre play and cost big money. Instead it seems that Gainey wants to get a good center and a good line for Kovalev, leaving Koivu to play with Ryder and Higgins.
June 19, 2006 pm30 4:44 pm
On HNIC sattelite Hotstove this past saturday Pierre LeBrun and Eric(last name I can’t spell) laid out some intersting rumors involving some old cohorts of Carbs and Gainey’s from Dallas.
It looks like the Habs have more interest in Arnott than any other team and would be willing to pay more than anyone else to get him as they are very intersted in his services.
Also it sounds like if Jamie Langenbrunner hits the market they would be interested in bringing him to La Belle Province.
And lets not forget that they are likely to trade or get rid of Aebischer(only if Huet is re-signed within the next 12 days), and of course Ribeiro and Zednik. That is the wild card Gainey has up his sleeve.
June 20, 2006 pm30 8:32 am
Habs#1 The wild card is the draft…trade up and build.I believe he is looking for a centre. This will happen but the draft is something every team is preparing for.More trades are made on that day then any other.
