  • Mark Streit signs 2 year deal

Tha Habs have signed Mark Streit to a 2 year contract.

    Mark Streit

Streit came over midway last season and was described as an ‘offensively minded’ skilled and speedy defenceman. Streit was intended to be a power play specialist but when arriving had some trouble adjusting to the speed and skill of the NHL. Powerplay specialist he was not, nor a defensively sound player.

Streit was a healthy scratch several times down the stretch of the season but when injuries and other cirumstances gave him a chance to play he began improving slowly. Streit continued improving right up until the end of the season which he will hopefully be able to continue doing next fall.

Streit is Captain of the Swiss National team and anyone who watched the 2006 Olympics noticed the he was the dominant force on that team and played very well. Fans got a glimpse of what Canadiens scouts must have seen before bringing him over.

Streit is a 5th or 6th defenceman and can fill a certain role on the Canadiens. Hopefully with a little more NHL experience under his belt he will continue to improve and contribute to the team.

  • Begin, Downey and Murray Signed

The Montreal Canadiens made their first signings of the off season inking Steve Begin, Garth Murray and Aaron Downey to new deals.

Great news for the Canadiens. Bob Gainey identified and signed his role players that will make up a core part of the Canadiens next season.
Begin had one of his best seasons last year and newcomers Garth Murray and Aaron Downey fit in quite well.

All of these guys have similar rough and physical styles of play and aren’t afraid of dropping the gloves. Gainey’s assuring early that the Canadiens won’t lack a physical element like they have in so many recent years.

All of these guys have been borderline NHLers and the vote of confidence the Canadiens have just given them should make for an interesting season.
