Bob Gainey’s Contract Extended

Posted on July 24th, 2006. About The Habs, The NHL.

We are very happy that Bob Gainey has extended his association with the Montreal Canadiens leading to the franchise’s Centennial Year in 2009-10,” said team president Pierre Boivin. “Bob has put together a very strong hockey management team, and his leadership is a source of inspiration for our fans and all members of the Canadiens’ organization

What can you say? I think every fan will be happy with this news. Gainey’s changed the team around completely since taking over and even stepped behind the bench himself.

In a few years time this may be looked back upon as a move that changed the course of the Canadiens and returned them to the top of the NHL.

Michael Ryder signs 1 year deal

Posted on July 23rd, 2006. About The Habs, The NHL.

The Canadiens have signed last seasons goal scoring leader Michael Ryder to a one year deal worth $2.2 Million.

$2.2 is roughly what was to be expected after earning $1 Million last season and leading the Canadiens in many offensive categories.

Ryder is sometimes criticized for being a 1 dimensional player but the truth is Ryder is a crucial component in the Habs offence.

The 6′0″, 198-pound right-winger led the team in goals (30), power play goals (18), game-winning goals (6) and shots on goal (243).

The Canadiens supply of goal scoring talent is not exactly among the best in the league. One dimensional or not, Ryder does his job and for $1M he did it very well. The pressure will be on now to be at least as good if not better than last year.
