Patrick Elias a Canadien?
Add the Montreal Canadiens to the list of teams interested in signing Patrick Elias. According to RDS, Bob Gainey will try to negotiate with the UFA on Saturday. - RDS
Can it be done? It would certainly give the Canadiens a true time tested goal scorer and playoff performer.
Would Elias be interested in playing for the CH or interested in whoever offers the most cash? Are the Habs ready to pay?
The NHL Free Agent market opens at noon and the Canadiens are expected to be a fairly big player this year. Elias is being courted by several teams and would definitely be a big name signing if the Habs could snag him.

Well I certainly hope now with Bob Gainey running the show behind the scenes that the Habs can continue to add some brand names to their lineup to add some much needed assistance to the gifted Kovalev and Koivu punches. Elias would be an amazing catch….but its hard to envision the Canadiens actually getting it done, they always seem to let these top guys slide through their fingers….especially if they are not of french-canadian descent. Another name they should be hooking in Pronger…yes the price is high, but Ribeiro has proven to be a wash here, but has potential and they can also throw the oilers a bone with say Boullion and add maybe even Kovalev if the signing with Elias works out. I am sick of seeing these guys with at best what has been lackluster defence going on more than a decade now. No more ed ronin and David Wilkie’s please…lets get a name defenceman here to assist with the talented Markov, and the gritty Souray (hopefully in the off-season he can get over his wife leaving him and can come out and find his game again)

Though the Habs lost their shot at Zdeno Chara, it’s about a 70% that Patrick Elias puts on a Canadiens jersey this year. As well, the habs are steadily after Jason Arnott and even Rob Blake. They don’t have the cap room for the 3 talents but be sure to note they will get atleast one.

The salary cap is 44 million this year. Does anyone know how much of it do the canadiens intend to use? Also, how much has been used already and for what players? Is there a webpage with the details?

70% my ass, Elias has just re-signed with the Devils. Blake also signed with the kings, and Arnott sucks.

Day 1 of free agency for the Northeast division:
- Bruins sign Chara and Savard
- Sens get Gerber and Corvo
- Leafs nab Gill and Kubina
Habs? Stand pat with Bouillon.

It’s disappointing to see some real quality UFAs landing with the Northeast competition. As Habs fans we need to be patient and see how the rest of the FA season pans out — remember the teams that did best in the playoffs, the ones which built teams, not just bought one or two stars.
Patience…

fruuum, this link show the habs payroll commitments thus far: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/feature/?fid=2710&hubname=
I agree that patience is the key since one or two stars don’t win championships but it still would’ve been nice to land Elias

Yes. Patience. Remember that Gainey is in a good position. He doesn’t need to blow his brains out signing UFA’s. We have a decent kore of players who now have played well together over the past season. We have players with tremendous upside still. Boullion, Markov, Souray (will be better, Ryder: all along with Kovy and Kovu we will be okay. The next wave of VALUE players will now be reported and we will get good player in habland.
Cant wait for 06-07 to start!

I checked out that website left by fan 3 and did some calculations. The habs are roughly at about 30 million so far. That gives them 14 million to work with. I guess theodore made a lot of room! I dont know how close teams usually go to the cap though but hopefully with 14 mill Gainey can make something happen. Sure Patrick Elias is now out of the question but lets not forget there are still some good players out there. What about someone like Chris Simon, or Mike Peca (he was unhappy in Edmonton), hopefully gainey does something soon though before we have to resign Bulis hahahah.
By the way does anyone know whats going on with Pronger… theres all this talk of him movin around but is he even a free agent? Whats all that about?
Posted on July 2nd, 2006 at 10:52 am. About 'Patrick Elias a Canadien?'.
With gerber signed and roloson signed, detroit needs to be desperate for a goalie. Aebescher? They got some good guys to pick off. What a move by ottawa to pick up gerber. I had completely forgotten about that guy. He’s a big reason why the canes were 2nd seed.
Who says Hasek goes back to the wings?
Posted on July 2nd, 2006 at 2:11 pm. About 'Patrick Elias a Canadien?'.
Arnott has supposedly signed with the Predators. Looking down the list of UFA free agent centres, I still see Jason Allison. Maybe the return of Perreault, the man Ribeiro supposedly made expendable?
Posted on July 2nd, 2006 at 3:13 pm. About 'Patrick Elias a Canadien?'.
Interesting, if Arnott’s signed with Nashville, a lot of speculation goes down the drain. Forget Allison. Major injury risk: he’s long in the tooth. As for Perreault, he should never have been allowed to leave: lately, the Habs never mastered the face-off as well as when they had Yanic — against the ‘Canes they missed a good face-off man especially after the Williams-Koivu ‘incident’ (let’s try not to forget).
Perreault is also intriguing because he puts in the effort.
Otherwise, it’s up to Gainey to make the big trades… do I hear Ribs, Zed, etc…?? The FAs left aren’t worth the price.
Posted on July 2nd, 2006 at 4:13 pm. About 'Patrick Elias a Canadien?'.
I never understood why Perreault was let go either. He was had 20+ goals in 4 of the last 5 years I think, was one of the very top faceoff man on the league, and a work-out freak, and he was asking under a million. I think Nashville signed him for 550K.

Ok guys we saw it again….just as my first post indicated. Once again the two main palyers the Habs wanted to sign did not work out. Elias stays in Jersey fro way way way too much money…good palyer yes, but i am glad Gainey did not try to compete with that…just another over priced european fluffy. Then there is arnot…a forward player we need to accomadate the second line….he signs with the preds??? I dont get it…do these players not want to play in a city that is full og hockey fever and excitment? it seems they want to take the money and run and play for a city where there play will not be analyzed no matter how bad they play, and therefore cannot be scrutinized for being way over payed for…good job Gainey…stand your ground and look for the bargains….there will be at least two new players with the habs next year….a new forward and a new defenceman…any guesses as to who????
Posted on July 2nd, 2006 at 7:33 pm. About 'Patrick Elias a Canadien?'.
Look for new bargains? We f@ck’n need 3 pieces to the puzzle (#1 d-man, a scoring winger and a true #2 centre)
and this cheap bastered is letting them slip away!
Pay the f@ck up! We need a #1 D-Man, Pronger and Lidstrom are the only one’s left. Did someone forget to wake this f@ck’n guy up? he just missed the main event. How could you let Jovo go? I can’t believe this is happening, I’m in a state of panic. If Ribiero returns I will never here the end of it!
Posted on July 2nd, 2006 at 8:27 pm. About 'Patrick Elias a Canadien?'.
Wake up Stevejur, the Canadiens offered Elias more money than the Devils but
apparently Elias is comfortable in NJ and felt the pressure of playing in Montreal with a big fat contract might have been not to his liking….also I am
not sure where you are getting your facts but Lidstrom signed with Detroit two days ago for another two years….so he is not available as a UFA.
Posted on July 2nd, 2006 at 8:34 pm. About 'Patrick Elias a Canadien?'.
I think Lidstrom already re-signed with Detroit. Pronger isn’t a free agent, and the Oilers predictably want a lot in return. They signed Roloson, so they don’t need our most valuable expendable piece (Aebischer).
I’m disappointed we didn’t get Savard, Arnott, Blake, Chara, et al but I’m willing to be patient — so far Gainey has re-signed everyone he should have at this point, except his RFA’s. And the rumours show he is concentrating where he should.
Posted on July 2nd, 2006 at 8:45 pm. About 'Patrick Elias a Canadien?'.
Offer the Oilers a deal for Pronger and Samsonov, say, throw in Souray, Zednik, Ribeiro and some other homo like Perezhogin. After dat, all we need is a center.
Posted on July 2nd, 2006 at 8:49 pm. About 'Patrick Elias a Canadien?'.
Sorry riser8 i’ve been away for 3 days you are right about Lidstrom.
However, Montreal offered just under 7M for Elias, NJ did give him more.
Not getting a Jovo or a Chara is inexcusable, they must make a serious pitch for Pronger.
I don’t think there is another #1 d-man out there?

Wake up and smell the roses, guys! We won’t compete with teams in our own division this year, because we just don’t have the same caliber of players, thanks to Gainey, THE WORST GM IN THE NHL! you”re right! He is a cheap bastard! Thanks Gainey for nothing! You just made our team worse! Can anyone tell me,( since unrestricted free agency started a few years ago), who the habs have ever signed? The answer is NOT 1 SINGLE PLAYER! That’s right. They have NEVER signed a free agent! If you look carefully, all the Canadiens players are via trades, or thru their minor teams. If someone can name 1 single FA the Canadiens have signed in the last few years, I’ll make you GM of the Montreal Canadiens!

REMAINING FREE AGENTS that might help this team:
C - Jason Allison - upgrade from Ribeiro. Point a game his whole career
If he can become the Allison of old he could be a steal.
LW - Eric Daze - Home town boy. Is injury prone, but could dominate if healthy.
D - Eric Desjardins - I still believe he has some gas in the tank.
At 37 we could get 2 good years out of him, would always be welcome back!
LW - Jeff Friesen - Could change his career playing the other wing with Kovalev. He has talent.
LW - Bill Guerin - POWER FORWARD! Everyone has 1 bad year, could be the steal we’ve been waiting for??
Gainey, Muller and Carbo know him well.
Not much left guys who would you take? I

Hey I’m going to throw my thoughts out here and they are going to take sides with those of you who are frustrated and dissapointed. As fans we have every right to be upset. We have stood by and supported some weak teams in the past 10 plus years. It is hard to see such a proud glorius franchise embarrass themselves but as true fans we stand by and continue to support our boys. I’m angry because if I’m not mistaken the Habs were number one in attendance this past year, 41 sell outs at home. What do the fans get in return for our commitment to this team? I undrstand that Gainey may have offered more money to certain players that have opted to sign with other clubs, but for a lot of these veterans it’s not just about the money. Gainey can offer big contracts but what he has to do is sell the city and organization to these UFA’s and their families. Yes Montreal is a high pressure place to play but look at the positives this city can offer some of these guys and thats where Gainey is failing, he is not selling the city. Take Elias for example, Montreals european atmosphere would have been a fantastic fit for Elais. Bring these guys and their families into the city, then get Koivu and Kovalev to take them around and show them what a great place Montreal is to live and raise a family. Look at Chris Pronger, his situation is not about money or the teams success, he has a big contract and the Oilers went to the cup finals and he still demands a trade. Why? because his wife dosn’t like Edmonton and dose not want to raise her kids their. Sad, yes, but thats reality. Kevin Lowe and his assistants should be kissing Prongers wife’s ass. Your not just signing a player to a contract your also signing their families and sometimes that gets forgotten. Look at Boston, Toronto, Florida, and Tampa Bay all 4 teams have made changes and signings that have improved them and all 4 teams were chasing Montreal for a plyoff spot. Considering what free agents are left and what we have to offer in terms of a trade I am not very optimistic about next year. If Shannahan is available I would make him an offer and then try and trade for a guy like Robert Lang. I know Lang and Shanny are good friends so if they can get one they might be able to get the other. I guess my main point out of all of this is:
1.Habs have lots of cap room
2.Habs are one of the top grossing teams in the league (Maybe even number 1)
3.Montreal a great place to live and play Hockey
* New Jersey (a swamp) vs Montreal (a beautiful, historic, trendy hockey hot bed)
SOMEBODY IS NOT DOING THEIR JOB!!!!!!

stevejur, Elias is getting paid $42M for 7 years. Therefore, if montreal offered just under 7 then NJ is paying him less

PRONGER A DUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow intersting deal…a smart one too. I think Burke and Lowe are two of the smartest GM’s in the business…to bad we dont have them on our side lol. Anyway the trade works out well for both, getting what they both needed. Pronger and Neirdermyer on the blue line together???? Wow looks like Ducks stanley cup champs in 06/07

Gainey is doing a terrible job here. While teams in the division are improving themselves right now Gainey is siiting on his hands.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!!!!!!!!!!!
The only positive is that Toronto handcuffed themselves by overpaying Kubina and Gill.
Posted on July 3rd, 2006 at 8:50 pm. About 'Patrick Elias a Canadien?'.
I think Gainey is doing fine not overpaying these UFA. He has also shown a willingness to get a top-notch player, and it can come through trades (not UFA’s). As long as he gets rid of the garbage (e.g. Ribeiro), and ends up bringing two solid players (at least one ’star’) by the end of the month it will be fine.

Another day, another nothing. Bullshit!
Eric Desjardins, Jason Allison, Petr Sykors and Sergie Samsonov are the only other 4 players that we should be gunning for. We just lost another year. We needed a #1 d-man and we didn’t get it. Pathetic! Pathetic!

Stevejur and Habs#1 are right on the money! Gainey has no idea what to do to get quality players to come here. He was certainly a great hockey player, but hockey players don’t always make good coaches or GM’s! Why can’t we ever attract top notch players? I don’t get it! The Montreal Canadiens, the most storied team, with so much tradition and glory! Oh! how they have fallen from grace. But as long as the fans are willing to pay top dollar for tickets, for a mediocre team, then the Canadiens brass figure, why changes? The fans don’t seem to mind! Fans, it’s time to boycott their games! let’s show them that this behavior is not acceptable! Please Gainey make some changes!

Gainey is doing an excellent job….outof all the teams in the Northeast, the Bruins are the only ones who improved…Toronto got slower on D, Ottawa lost scoring and D, Buffalo will be dumping guys to cut down on their salaries as the whole team has been pretty much awarded a raise by arbitration…Gainey re-signed our best and added some great guys in Samsonov and Johnson. Also they should offer Daze an incentive filled contract…he would look great in the rouge, bleu et blanc…GO HABS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
