Radek Bonk: From Zero to Hero

Radek Bonk scored a clutch goal to take the lead over the Wild in the final minutes of the 3rd period. The Canadiens went on to win their 4th game in their last 5.
The Canadiens success this year has a lot to do with role players doing their job consistently and there is no better example than Radek Bonk.
Yes, Radek Bonk.
This time last year there was a lot of displeasure with Bonk who came to Montreal and did virtually nothing while cashing some pretty large checks. Bonk was targetted by fans and media all year and caught a lot of flak on a regular basis.
Here’s some Bonk quotes from Habs Blog last year:

Enter Radek Bonk. What can you say about Bonk? I don’t think anyone would argue he has done anything good for this team and it’s become increasingly hard to care at all that he is a Hab. Bonk saucered out a weak, poorly timed, poorly planned pass that was intercepted and a few seconds later it was in the net.
Radek Bonk has a tear in groin muscle and is out indefinitely. If I were reporting this back in August or September I might have thought that this would be a big blow to the Habs and hard to overcome. Not the case. Radek Bonk has been nothing less than an underachiever this year. 0 goals and 2+ million dollars a year. You can say he has been hurt and never fully healthy, he did miss 8 games. Regardless, Canadiens fans (and management) expected a lot more from Bonk.
Ouch.
How quickly things change?
Bonk has 5 goals and like last night’s, many of those goals were important or game winners.
Bonk is +11 and his line mates +12 and +9 along side of him. The line is extremely effective at shutting down the opponents top guns. And this extra scoring is a great bonus.
The Canadiens are finally getting what they wanted from Radek Bonk and it’s becoming hard to picture the Habs without him.

Thank god we have him during this tought non-Higgins time
I expect him to be biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig this year, but then i also expected us to beat Florida. Oh dear.

Radek Bonk is capable, useful and valuable in his role in Montreal. Mathieu Garon is an erratic, inconsistent at best, backup goalie in Los Angeles… so who won that trade? Plus, we got some guy named Huet to boot…

I think Bonk should be playing on the second line with Kovy and Samsonov. He could be a 2nd line center, he’s got the skills, and would be a great asset on the second line because he knows how to play defensively.

I would love to see him centering Samsy and Kovy, the prob is that he and Johnson (wow is he doing great) look unreal together. And Zhogy is fitting in nicely as well. I was never a fan of Perezhogin but my I think I was wrong about him…. Hard to break up that line…Pleks played well last nite, maybe its a turn for the better and the 2nd line will finalyl produce. OUt of the Habs 7 shots in the 2nd period where they went missing, that line got 3 of them. Total shots for that line out of 35…..

GO BONK!
Yeah about Garon I always thought he was a little overated. I remember in 03-04 while still here alot of teams had their eyes on him and yet eveytime he played he looked erratic. Then when we traded him of course the media was all like how could they do that. As for our current goaltending: huet on Friday and Abby on Saturday seems like a no brainer.

I would rather keep putting Huet in net until he shows weakness. Have him get focused is the key…Abischer can wait a few more or until he’s needed.
As far as Bonk goes…well he has made progress and if…big if, he continues…he’ll earn the fans respect and they will support him. So it’s all up to him. (that goes for any other player too!).
Let’s see how they attack Buffalo….(staying out of the penalty box will be the key…and skating/hitting). Go Habs Go!

Bonk is playing really well, no doubt. Last year he played ok esp towards the end of the year, but definitely not as good as this year. And the year before those Habsblog quotes were dead on. And therein lies my suspicion: is he turning it up because his contract is up at the end of the year?
Jose Theodore did the same thing, turning in an MVP/Vezina winning year right before negotiating a big fat albatross of a contract. And then we all know what happened the next year. Bonk isn’t Theo of course, but once bitten, twice shy.

kazmojo raises a pretty stereotypical but factual point. Europeans over the age of 30 ALWAYS play well in a contract year. Then once they get the deal they shut it down once again. ex:Sergei Federov(Anaheim), Sergei Gonchar(Pittsburgh), Vaclav Prospal(Anaheim-then traded back Tampa), Nikolai Khabibulin(Chicago), Jan Bulis(Vancouver-although we all knew that he really sucked), Alexander Mogilny(New Jersey), Alexei Yashin(NYI), Alexei Zhitnik(NYI), Miroslav Satan(NYI-man did Mike Milbury suck), Peter Nedved(Phenoix-the traded to Philly), I’m opening this can of worms again/ Alex Kovalev(Montreal), Martin Gerber(Ottawa), Bobby Holik(NYR,ATL), Filip Kuba(Tampa). And that’s just recent history.
Bonk, Slava Kozlov in Hotlanta and Peter Sykora could just be the next three to join that list.
The game against Buffalo is going to be tough as usual. If the Habs can’t stay out of the box in this one they’re doomed. Huet is starting tomorrow, Aebischer will probably start against Philly.

I still cant figure out Why Teemu and Kariya went to Colorado together. I still laugh because when they signed everyone said the Avs would win the CUp. Kariya was hurt and Selanne played like **** and they did worse then teh year before. HAHA
