Taking notice of the Habs
-
The Canadiens are on the front page of TSN and there is a feature article on Cristobal Huet and the Habs success this season.
The hockey world is all over the Canadiens right now.
So the secret is out. The Canadiens are a good team.
How good?
No one expected much out of them at the beginning of the year and now they are catching the eyes of everyone with their strong start.
Can they keep it up after moving from under the radar to an Eastern Conference threat?
Is Cristobal Huet ready for the pressure of being the league’s best goaltender?
The Habs return to Carolina for their second game this month, the first a blowout 4-0 win.
Carolina are playing more like Candycanes than Hurricanes and seem to be suffering from the typical Stanley Cup hangover. But every team is a threat as Philadelphia recently proved.
Carolina still possess great speed and it should be a fast paced game which the Canadiens excel at.

- Senet1 : I agree, Carey needs to get some starts if they leave him out much longer he will be ineffective in the Playoffs, I really thought it was time to play him against TO but coach chose otherwise. Halak is not used to playing so many games in a row, whereas North Am. goalies are.
- goalie : Though I have supported Halak a lot this year, the decision was to keep both goalies. So, I really hope that Carey too is playing well going into the playoffs, that we make the playoffs and both goalies are at the top of their game. Put Carey in for the next few games and see how he plays!
- Senet1 : bigger that he covers more of the net. Being bigger price tends to loose the puck in his feet, most tall goalies have that problem. But is is one that more experience helps them improve on that weakness. With two more years of development Price is still the goalie of the future, if not the present.
- Senet1 : Well the more HALAK plays the more other teams will find his weaknesses and if he does not improve on those weakness he will not be as affective in a long run. I have notived that last three games that the goals scored on him many of the shooters are going high on him. Being a smaller goalie he is more vulnerable. Don't be surprised if Halak only onl makes it part way through a playoff series and then Price will be back in net. Price weakness is also high shots but he is so much bigger that h
- Senet1 : I have to admit I am over joyed at no ndgatives coming out of this game. One thing I could not figure out, when Gomez and Gionta saw AK46 deek the TO goalie and go 5 hole why they didn't try the same thing is beyond me. That is obviously his weakness. Goalie I am concerned about that too , only good part about it there aRE NO SHOOTOUTS IN THE PLAYOFFS.
- goalie : I am more than a little concerned that the Lafs exposed Halak's inability to stop a player who dekes to Halak's glove hand side. He played those dekes very poorly.
- rocky : The leafs played a strong game and have some pretty deadly shootout threats. We did not lose anyone to injury and that game could have went either way. Now how is that for a positive spin on things eh?
- rocky : I hate to admit this, but I think Andrei Kostitsyn is poised to break his slump. He still skates like a turd, but I just have a feeling. If we get out of this game with no major injuries to key players I will be happy win or lose.
- Senet1 : Mst's I think if they can sign Markov to an extension then they can make move on some of the other defenceman before they become UFA. Hammer is a prime example and likewise so is Gil. Somehow I feel that there is something wrong with a one year contract like Mara's where he can be paid for not playing due to injury and then the team pays his bills and he can leave and go UFA without making up the salary. To me a contract should force a player to play a minimum of 50 games or healthy scatches
- Senet1 : Jagr is a strange player, lots of talent but he has lost his heart and all it is about is money. Edmonton would be better off using the money elsewhere.
- goalie : Rumor has it that the Oilers will be signing Jaromir Jagr to a very $$$$ 3 year contract. Makes sense because Jagr doesn't really want to play on a team that is a contender....so Oilers are a good possibility.
- goalie : I agree with Senet. Plex has been our best player this year. He hasn't been hurt for any long periods and he has done the job. He deserves to be our highest paid player. I sure hope that Markov rebounds next year. I find the Russian players very hard to read as to how they like it on a team and what their plans are going to be.
- Senet1 : To me it is hard not to pay Plex at least Cammy's money. He won't score as many goals but game in and game out Plex has been there and really, he has stayed healthy????
- Mats Naslund : Kesler $5m for 6 years.. 1 point seperates him and Plex in the standings.. Pretty good benchmark?
- Mats Naslund : I guess La presse is reporting that PG is talking extension with Markov's people.
- Mats Naslund : Boston and NY did us a huge solid last night by blowing it. 1 point out of 5th with 11 games to go.
- Mats Naslund : Might be a little sneaky, but what if we made Markov the captain - he would have a hard time leaving as a UFA. Hammrlik's $$ is Markov's in a year. We'll have the $$ to sign him and another UFA. I think I also like BUF in the first round although Miller scares the bajezus out of me. NJ after that.
- Senet1 : may lose him to UFA?? We make up the cap space with Laraque's salary, and the trade of one of are large defenceman salaries.
- Senet1 : There are four contracts that are a must for our GM needs to get done. Plek we need to give him a raise say $5.5M Our two goalies each in the neighbourhood $3M but perhaps the more important contract is Markov's he is not a UFA this year but if we agreed to renegoitate his contract a year earlier for say a raise to $6M next year and $7M for two more years then we may be able to get hims signed for at least 3 or 4 more years. If we let his contract expire and he become a UFA in 2011 then we may
- Senet1 : In fact I knew that I had to play washington, I would rather take them out in the first round.
- Senet1 : Well the one thing that does not matter is our record against any of these teams during the season. This is a much different team than the one we saw play during the majority of the season. Secondly, if I was going to pick a team to play it would be one with weaker goaltending. Right now if I had to pick it would either be Pittsburg or NJ although Washington can be had if Theodore does not play above his head. I believe that any team that can score 4 goals a game has a chance to beat Washing
- goalie : NJ would be my second choice followed by Pens OR Caps - don't think it much matters. No easy pickings Habs!
- goalie : Well the good news is that we're playing much better now than at times during the year. The Habs MUST play their bestagainst ANY of these teams to have a chance. We lost three staraight to the Pens, the Caps scare me because they have talent, NJ have improved greatly but we have played well vs them. I think we only beat Buf once but all but one game was very close. I guess I'd take my chances vs ther Sabres as I think our style matches up well against them.If we could beat Miller we could win.
- Mats Naslund : Unless we see a miracle, MON will be a 5-8 seed. So who between WAS, PIT, BUF, or NJ do you want in the 1st round?
- Mats Naslund : Metro is 35. I cant see them giving more than 1yr. He definitely deserves a spot next year though.
- Avatar37 : Senet - I agree, Metropolit is impressive and Metro and Moen always seem to come up clutch. I really hope they sign him to a 3-4 year deal.
- goalie : Isn't it a lot more interesting and fun when our team is playing well and on a run!
- Senet1 : So we have a good third line the fourth line is playing responsible hockey and the first line is generating offense as well as controling the play. Plek is playing hard and still managing to get a goal here and there so if Cammy can get back maybe we have four solid lines. Right now Martin is rolling the four lines well and I think we are tiring out the other teams.
- Senet1 : I also am impressed with our fourth line Metro, Lapierre and Darche. They are playing some productive minutes killing time and tieing up the other team in their zone.
- Senet1 : This line sort of reminds me of the Gainey line, they always scored the big goals in tight games. Believe it or not when the game was tied 1-1 I thought is is about time our third line got a goal and a few minutes later they did. It is become a regular thing this line.
- rocky : Moore brings great puck possession in the offensive zone and Segie can finish plays. Nice to watch, they are smoking third lines on other teams right now.
- Senet1 : I agree his brother is working out really well with Moore and Moan. They have offensive abilities and at the same time are very responsible defensively.
- rocky : He has talent you know, but just no intensity or desire for hockey at this stage. He should watch his brother right now and do his best to emulate him.
- rocky : That would s*ck. They should sit his ass.
- Senet1 : Yea I agree, because if not either Pyatt or Darche will be sent back down maybe both?

Although I would like to admit they are a contender, they are not there yet. Still one or two years away! However, they are a dangerous team and will be tough to beat if they make the playoffs. They are still 1 or 2 players away. What do you guys think?
Z-man
November 30, 2006 pm30 5:54 pm
yes 1 or 2 players away and this team will be deadly i agree
November 30, 2006 pm30 6:07 pm
1 or 2 guys away if we don’t lose any guy in the off-season.
I know playoff is far far away. (I won’t even be able to watch any games, leaving 8 for intership in Neatherland) But if they get a long run in playoff, the guys might want to stay in Montreal. They know that the chemistry is good, everything is good and there might be a bigger chance to win the Stanley Cup. At the same time, some free agency (Good one that play and score not like Samsonov right now) might want to come to montreal.
Hope everything goes well
BTW : Anyone know a place in Delft or Amsterdam where it would be possible to watch a Hockey Game ?
!?
November 30, 2006 pm30 6:11 pm
Probably via NASN (American Sport Cable Company – http://www.nasn.com/content/nasn/portal.nsf/systemcontent/howtogeteu – check here)
Thats the only way i can think seeing as how it does wonders for me in the little old UK.
November 30, 2006 pm30 6:29 pm
Yeah, J-Nic, it might be tough in Holland. I got NASN in the UK (during the strike it was a total waste of money LOL) — you might be able to find it. Otherwise, call the Embassy.
As for the ingredients for a Cup, I agree they’re 1-2 players away, and also that they might lose other key ingredients before next year. So… get the 1-2 players now, but preserve the chemistry and the key members of the team.
In that vein, I heard about a report coming out of Boston that a deal involving Samsonov and Chicago was in the works. Though we all know the futility of rumours, especially in Montreal, there’s no question Sammy’s having a tough time and his early comments regarding the demotion that never really happened surely ruffled feathers.
Whatever happens, the team is going far this year as long as the second period lapses don’t become a trend and a few players (who know who they are) find their scoring touches (we know they got it). I can’t wait for Higgins to be back!!
November 30, 2006 pm30 6:52 pm
I have watched most of the games thusfar, and I believe all of the November games. I have also, because of my job, had a chance to see most of the other teams, though not as closely. The Canadiens ARE one of the Top5 teams in the league for sure. They are moving together nicely, with and without the puck, have a strong presence (finally) and have a determination (team game)that has been lacking from years prior. This team started to take shape late last year, and with Guy behind the bench, and a lack of injuries (knock on wood) I do think they have a chance to win it all.
November 30, 2006 pm30 7:02 pm
I was listening to the team 990 today during the Pierre McGuire segment and he STILL isn’t sold on Huet, He wants to see Huet go through 60 games with the same numbers. This guy has the top save%, GAA, he held Buffalo to one goal and he dosen’t boast about himself and he takes the blame and dosen’t blame his team mates if he has a bad game(Aebischer!).
The Habs need to take advantage of these games. The Canes’ are realing having lost 3 of 4. Like every game if they come out fast and get 1-2 quick goals the Hurricanes might fold like a cheap suit.
And the Habs are only a 2nd line centre away from being a perennial cup contendre.
November 30, 2006 pm30 7:39 pm
I believe most would agree that the Habs are a better team than they were last year. I think many would also agree that we would have eliminated Carolina had Justin “ice pick” Williams not taken out our captain with an “accidental” high stick. I would say we are definitely a contender, barring injuries.
November 30, 2006 pm30 8:08 pm
Can you believe it. There isn’t anythong to complain about or analyze or criticize..just enjoy!!

November 30, 2006 pm30 8:25 pm
Part of the Habs success has been when the rookies have come up to replace the injured players, like Kosty, or the rookie that stuck around Gui…..hmmm…I wonder how well the team will be when Price is finally up? Or some of the prospects if Gainey doesn’t trade them away like some well know prospects that went on to be superstars.
I have to agree the Habs are worth watching this year for sure.
November 30, 2006 pm30 8:46 pm
First period in the bank. Habs are looking good. Huet in particular has been sharp. No chance for him on the Cole goal, very nice move on the rebound to score.
The Ryder goal was sweet, perfect pass from Latendresse.
Go habs!
November 30, 2006 pm30 9:20 pm
COLE! That guy has been a Habs killer for years! Eer since they lost to Carolina five years ago in the playoffs. What does he have against the Habs? Did he grow up a Leafs or Bruins fan or something?
November 30, 2006 pm30 9:26 pm
Cole is a HAB BUSTER. I’ve aways felt he should play for montreal, its as if he elevates his game to impress hab managment.
November 30, 2006 pm30 9:36 pm
Cole is an animal out there tonight. Shooting, hitting, scoring…he’s doing it all.
MTL is lucky Huet is on his game. They are getting vastly outshot by the Canes.
November 30, 2006 pm30 10:28 pm
When you snooze, you lose! and guess what? we lost! AGAIN WE DIDN’T SHOW UP FOR THE THIRD PERIOD!!!!!!!!! WHY CAN”T WE PLAY 60 MINUTES OF HOCKEY???????Those penalties, AGAIN! Huet wasn’t sharp on the 4th goal! So, until we decide to play 60 MINUTES, we’re on thin ice. Oh, by the way, Ottawa scored 6 times against Florida; This is the Florida we couldn’t score a goal against!
November 30, 2006 pm30 10:38 pm
And here comes the fanatic.
Yes we lost. At least we score. Yes, the third was bad, but apart from that – where are the faults? Not everyteam can play 60 mins. everygame as players are not made of stamina and endurance. Just be glad that we did not get shut out.
What annoyed me the most about the game was the attendance. It disgusts me that the Stanley Cup champions have such a pitiful attendance. Shameful.
November 30, 2006 pm30 10:47 pm
I could care less about the attendance. Those SOURAY penalties!does that guy have a brain or what? he hurts the team more than he helps us. I would rather have good defence from him, and no offence, than lousy defence and penalties that cost his team. I say trade him before his stock goes down.(taking penalties and giving away the puck won’t help his cause!
November 30, 2006 pm30 11:16 pm
WTF! Why is it that we allow over 35 shots a game?
We are out shot every single game.
Samsonov sucks! He has done nothing for this team, nothing.
Time to start fixing the little things Bobby to put this team over the top.
This team really needs a pure sniper, a real goalscorer
(please don’t say Ryder, you have to be able to hit the net to score)
November 30, 2006 pm30 11:37 pm
Well I didn’t watch the whole game, just the 3rd peroid lol good timing..anywaysit seems to me that souray his either a habs hero, or a habs zero. Hes either scoring important powerplay goals, or scoring with 1 sec left in OT, or hes taking brainless penalties or bad turnovers, iam not to sure about souray right now. Even though huet had one of his worest performance of the year you really cant play this guy, 48 shot against is not acceptable. Also i think were turing into the flames from last year a bit. We dont score as many goals as other teams in the league, but we have a great goalie who doesn’t allow a lot. Plus samsonov got a point so i dont think this the game to blame him either.
P.S. that save by koviu in the 3rd was nuts, you can tell why he wears the “C”
November 30, 2006 pm30 11:42 pm
stevejur’s got the Ryder thing right.
Haven’t Cole and Williams done enough to the Habs already? Did Cole really have to dominate the Habs tonight? Did Williams have to scroe the winning goal?I mean, shouldn’t he have made it up to Saku by giving him the puck to go in on a breakaway and score in the third? Oh if only we lived in a perfect world.
But you just don’t give up 48 shots and expect to win. Huet was really good again till the Belanger goal, but I’m guessing that may have been fatigue from all the shots he faced. The Habs will need to put up a way better defensive effort to beat the Leafs which seams almost impossible for them to do for some reason. But the game wasn’t all bad, they can take positives out of the first 2 periods. But once again taking way to many penalties cost’s them a game.If there’s one critizisim I have of Souray it’s that his temper can get the best of him at times or he just takes some bad penalties. He’s gooten way better at it compared to last season though which is good.
But fanatic, why are you bringing up a game that already happened. And why are you comparing them to Ottawa? They beat Florida which is what counts. Would you prefer it if the Habs had gone on an all out offensive blitz, scored 4 goals but given up 6? The Habs don’t have the same offensive horses the Sens do. That’s why they play more of a defensive game.
And the Samsonov singing is looking worse and worse with each passing game. If Gainey can unload this guy on someone AND get something back for him at the deadline then he’ll have corrected his major mistake.(Hey if we somehow are in a perfect world, and since Rutherford was dumb enough to trade Jack Johnson, maybe he’ll trade Cole for Samsonov. Ah what a dream that would be.)
And to show just how dominent Cole was he registered 11 SHOTS ON GOAL! WHO DOES THAT?
Just please don’t lose to the Leafs again, I’m not I’d survive it.
December 1, 2006 pm30 12:29 am
hey guys, all I want for Xmas, IS TO BEAT THE LEAFS,PLEASE!!!They’re playing crappy, so maybe, for once, we’re going to beat them. We need to shut up their commentators, and moronic fans. A shutout would be nice. You know, I think I would rather have Zednik than Samsonov. Agree?
December 1, 2006 pm30 1:33 am
Sorry fanatic1 their both ****, I’ll take the zamboni
December 1, 2006 pm30 2:35 am
I’d rather have a player who cares than either Sammy or Zednik.
December 1, 2006 pm30 12:49 pm
fanatic1: I don’t mean to personally attack you, but can you use effective english instead of capitalized letters when you are trying to make a point. It is an eyesore.
December 1, 2006 pm30 3:07 pm
I really think Justin Willaims is a *****.
December 1, 2006 pm30 3:09 pm
OH and Habs 1 I went to a game in 2002 and Zednik registered 14 shotsin that game and had 2 goals. SO it does happen. Especially when you have teams like Carolina who just throw the puck at the net from every which angle and distance. 48 shots but only about 20 decent shots.
December 2, 2006 pm30 3:19 am
No matter at what angel shots = goals.
