Canadiens 97 Years
-
Happy Birthday Habs.
97 years young. 24 Stanley Cups.
24.74% Stanley Cup Winning percentage.
Not bad.
The Habs celebrate tonight with an Original 6 game against the visiting Bruins. The Bruins started rough but are putting up wins and have climbed to the .500 mark.
The last time Montreal and Boston met Andrei Markov scored with virtually no time left on the clock to give the Habs the win.
The Bruins aren’t scoring much, tied for 2nd last in the Eastern Conference. Cristobal Huet has been a Bruin Killer for the last several games. That logic favors the Canadiens.
The Habs however, keep playing with fire taking unnecessary and costly penalties.
How many double minor unsportsmanlike penalties can the Habs take and get away with?
The most concerning part of the season so far has been their lack of discipline.
A win tonight and the Habs slowly creep a bit closer on the Sabres and the Eastern Division lead. A loss and 5 points is all that separates 2nd from 5th in the Northeast.
161 points are shared by the teams in the Northeast making it the toughest Division in the Eastern Conference, and 1 shy of the league’s best behind the Pacific. Not much room for error.

This is where this team really needs to get going. They need to start pulling away from teams behind them. Easier said then done.I feel habs can can put a string of 6 wins together. We are all still waiting for the second line to break out but the more we watch the more frustrating it becomes.I think gainey knows what needs to be done.As for our defence i think souray and markov are a MUST SIGHN rivet on the otherhand we probably be sent walking as much as i do like him.Cant keep abby for much longer the way huet has been playing,1.9 million is way to much for a backup goalie we all know it and so does gainey. It will be interesting to see how the next month pans out GO HABS GO
December 4th, 2006 at 12:01 pm
Bring on the B’s tonight. The Habs are just plain better than those guys but this is the first time in a while the Habs have run into a hot goalie(Thomas).
All that needs to happen for this to be a good day is a Habs win over Boston and Frankie Bouillion beating up Zedeno Chara. Now that would be awesome!
December 4th, 2006 at 12:02 pm
I saw the ‘NEW’ Habs jerseys for next year. *ugh!* There’s a league wide redesign of all teams’ jerseys by Bettman and the owners for next year. NOBODY ASKED THE FANS OF COURSE! So sign the petition and tell Gary and the owners to RESPECT THE FANS for once and DO NOT **** WITH THE HABS’ jersey, it’s been constant since forever! Would he change the Yankees’ pinstripes??? http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/petition-sign.cgi?nhl66
December 4th, 2006 at 12:56 pm
Scroll to the bottom of this link for a view of the new jersey design that will be tucked in(!) to the pants by players. http://www.gameworn.net/cgi-bin/GW/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=015494
BETTMAN’S GOTTA GO. LET’S GIVE HOCKEY BACK TO CANADIANS!
December 4th, 2006 at 1:40 pm
I’d love Patrick Marleau. But who would San Jose even need?? They don’t need anymore Defence and they have two good goalies (like us). So I can’t see them wanting (a number 1 draft pick?)…
December 4th, 2006 at 2:02 pm
Maybe San JOse will take Ninimaa. We will tell them he comes with a guaranteed win attitude.
December 4th, 2006 at 2:03 pm
This is bugging me more and more… why the hell does Bettman and the idiot owners have to keep ******* with the NHL???? Shootouts are ridiculous! Would the NFL settle ties with each QB throwing three footballs through a swinging tire on a tree??? This constant redesigning of jerseys is clearly just a cash grab (have any of them noticed the ‘new’ third jersey of Vancouver, Buffalo and Boston are the most popular with their fans BECAUSE THEY ARE THEIR THROWBACK JERSEYS!) The Yankees and Red Sox don’t mess with their uniforms cuz there’d be an outcry so I WANT AN OUTCRY WHEN BUTT-MAN AND THE IDIOTS (the owners hereon in) MESS WITH NHL HISTORY AND MONTREAL’s BEAUTIFUL, CLASSIC, TIMELESS JERSEY DESIGN!
December 4th, 2006 at 2:06 pm
Who are the bait in Montreal? Niinimaa, Samsonov, Murray, Rivet, Ryder, Kovalev, Aebischer??
December 4th, 2006 at 2:07 pm
Never trade Murray.
December 4th, 2006 at 2:09 pm
Why not? Garth Murray is at best a 4th liner.
December 4th, 2006 at 2:12 pm
Garth Murray would carve out his heart and pass it to you if you asked for it.
December 4th, 2006 at 2:16 pm
Yeah but so far he’s been doing it with invisible paint all over him.
December 4th, 2006 at 3:05 pm
could someone please explain to me why Ninnimaa is making more money than: Chris phillips, Eric Brewer? Also, why is Aebischer making more than Manny Legacy? Gainey is overpaying these players! Ninnimaa is getting 2.5 mil !What a horrible decision by Gainey! how ridiculous!and half the time he doesn’t even play, because he’s terrible. Get rid of him and his overblown salary1
December 4th, 2006 at 3:19 pm
You can’t look at it that way - Aebischer is making much less than Theo who he was traded for. Ninnimaa was a “you take my problem player, I’ll take yours, maybe one of us will get lucky” trade with Dallas. Would you rather both those trades not have been made? I do not believe anyone was beating on the Habs door to get Ribero.
December 4th, 2006 at 3:38 pm
To bad the Bruins will ruin the birthday surprise. We’re a much improved team since the refs helped you win the last time, I mean how can it be a penalty at one end of the ice but not the other. Huet has had a horshoe up his *** against us the last year, that ends tonight.
Murray Hat trick - 6-2 final…ouch
Bye the way, how is Sammy working out, he is so painful, he lacks what Thornton lacks - GO TO THE NET
December 4th, 2006 at 5:39 pm
oooo bruin fans so cocky and ***, maybe you should take a look at the stnadings and see whos ahead of you:)
December 4th, 2006 at 6:16 pm
well bruins fan; you know that horseshoe up the ***?well, we still have the horseshoe, and you’re still an ***!And guess what? your team has not won a stanley cup since 1969! all the games back then were in black and white.WE’VE WON 8 CUPS SINCE THEN! And come April, Bruins won’t be in the playoffs, and WE WILL! Say, how many points did Thornton have last year? Was that after your brainless GM traded him for nobodies? Guess so.
December 4th, 2006 at 6:17 pm
Boston was on top of the world, then they trade one of the best players in the game and he hasn’t even hit his prime yet, THEN overpay for Chara and Savard. Yah, the B’s are on their way to glory alright.
And Glen Murray? Him leading the Bruins in goals just go’s to show thin they are. What a joke. Bergeron and Boyes have taken a step back this season and once Thomas starts playing back to his ability everything will be back to normal.
December 4th, 2006 at 7:05 pm
Aww man, they can’t change the jersey’s… all that history, pride… and especially, don’t you just love the way you girlfriend (or just girls) look with those big shirts? They are really hot with em’ hehe…
And guys, maybe bettman is thinking this is a way to attract younger guys, but I’m 18 and I’m truly disapointed by this. Our only chance to save the jerseys are to sign guys, get everyone you know to sign. Go go go!
December 4th, 2006 at 7:10 pm
“Go B’s” - I’ll presume you’ll be back here after the game irregardless of the result?
BTW - at the end of the last game, Kessler dove on that play trying to draw a penalty - good sportsmanship; while your ‘D’ clearly grabbed Bonk with his open hand. That is why the ref called it at your end and not at ours. I have Tivo and watched both replays several times.
December 4th, 2006 at 7:24 pm
great point Habsinblood, but I think you mean ‘the american Sidney Crosby’(what a joke that turned out to be) Phil Kessel, Ryan Kessler plays for Vancouver.
December 4th, 2006 at 7:26 pm
Habs#1 - thanks for the correction - I meant Phil Kessel instead of Ryan Kessler.
December 4th, 2006 at 8:21 pm
Well, the new Stars, Philadelphia, and Red Wing’s jerseys are not so bad. But, i dont know why, the new Habs jersey is ugly. The white is too white, and, i dunno why, the plain bleublancrouge dont look like it should look.
December 4th, 2006 at 8:41 pm
You’ve got my signature smiler. The new ’streamlined’ hip uniforms are another bogus way of trying to once again sell the game to people who don’t care about it(americans).I don’t blame the Americans though, they didn’t grow up with the game so why would they care(does anyone in Canada really care about NASCAR or American college sports?). Bettman just needs to finally see the writings on the wall and that they just don’t care.
And while I’m writing this Guillaume scores!
December 4th, 2006 at 9:14 pm
Ouch, Thomas is going to stole the game. Advantage Thomas for the first period.
December 4th, 2006 at 9:18 pm
you can only play with fire so long. this time it will cost us the game! 2nd straight game at home, down 3-1 ! we’re falling into very bad habits!
December 4th, 2006 at 9:21 pm
Huet just cost us the game! his luck just ran out! now what do we do? Bruins will win big tonight. Aebischer now in, forget it! I’m turning the channel.
December 4th, 2006 at 9:31 pm
It’s not luck fanatic. It’s that his body isn’t conditioned to play 70 games like Brodeur or Kipprusof and he’s been facing 40 shots a night with no brake. He needs one.
December 4th, 2006 at 9:48 pm
Well, our defense sucks tonight. Yep. But Streit is very good as a forward. I love this 4th line, Begin, Murray and Streit. They rock.
December 4th, 2006 at 9:49 pm
4-4 only habs can do that… come back 3 goals in 1 period… we rock!
December 4th, 2006 at 9:49 pm
MAYBE i spoke too early. Habs just tied up the game. we are outplaying them, so let’s win this game!
December 4th, 2006 at 9:50 pm
PEREZOGHIN SCORES 4-4!!!! wow… our canadiens learned from Saku. Now they wont be beaten until the clock, at 60min.
December 4th, 2006 at 9:51 pm
Oh and Fanatic, you disapoint me… just because change goalie you lose hope in the habs? thats not a fanatic way to act… seriously man never give up. This team has the willpower to overcome any challenges right now.
December 4th, 2006 at 10:01 pm
wow - great game so far, you should be blowing us out of the water, man does ALberts suck, the next Hal Gill. Berg will score, then an empty netter for insurance.
If we still had Thornton then there would be no Chara - I’m fine with it now. You cannot say Savard is over rated, if you watch him each game he’s a great player, eyes in the back of his head.
Kessel is young, you’ll have nightmares about him someday, he’s had flashes, he’s only 18.
I cannot figure out who I hate more - Michael Ryder or Darcy Tucker
Go B’s
December 4th, 2006 at 10:01 pm
well let’s face it. I didn’t give up because Aebischer went in; I was frustrated because we were down 4-1. Normally, when you go down by 3 goals, you don’t come back. but I felt that we had outplayed them, and were down 4-1, so I felt like, what’s going on? we should have been ahead, not behind. If we can play the same way in the 3rd, we can beat them. now it’s time for their goalie to let in a soft one.
December 4th, 2006 at 10:18 pm
Hey B-man, don’t start showing off your rookie and look at ours, didn’t he get the first goal of the game? loser..
December 4th, 2006 at 10:41 pm
did anyone else just loose the VS. coverage on NHL Centre Ice? I did going into 3rd, Gotta listen to play by play now.
December 4th, 2006 at 10:48 pm
did kovalev just make us lose the game?!?
December 4th, 2006 at 10:51 pm
poetic justice at it’s finest. Tell me how overrated Savrad is again?
have a good night boys - don’t lose sleep over that one, you guys have a good team, I’d love another playoff matach up
PS - Tell Ryder he should only raise his stick after a goal…AHAHAHA
December 4th, 2006 at 10:56 pm
We didn’t deserve to lose this game. as far as I’m concerned we lost because of a blown NOT CALLED PENALTY ON BOSTON! we get no respect from the referees! They can’t wait to call us for penalties, but they let the opposition get away with murder!!! always! this is not the first time the officials have let the opposing team get away with it. Carbo should complain to the head of NHL officiating! too bad, because this was the best skating effort from us, and we lost.so I guess, we need to play tight defensive games, because those are the only ones we win. When we open up, we get scored on, and lose. So play like Calgary and NJ, to win. Guys, this is 1 game that REALLY UPSET me, because WE SHOULD HAVE WON IT! We deserved at least 1 point! and now, we have a difficult week, with games in NJ( where we never win) on Wednesday, NYI on Thursday, and back home to face Buffalo on Saturday. it’s going to be tough.
December 4th, 2006 at 11:15 pm
Hey Go B’s
regarding that playoff series, are you sure that’s what you want?
Another first round exit hahaha
Enjoy the victory we know it’s been awhile
Now, what the hell is up with Bouillion throwing the puck across the middle of the ice?
They teach you this in junior, to make that mistake in the NHL???
That second line must get fixed, it’s horrible. How much longer do we have to wait?
Rivet, Kovalev or Samsonov have to go, package that **** out of here.
How much more longer do we have to suffer?
Not even Higgins centering the second line can fix this ****.
I feel sorry for Plekanec who has to suffer between these two.
December 5th, 2006 at 12:31 am
You guys might think im crazy but I think this game proved how huch habs were a team. They were palying as a team, scoring as a team, hitting as a team, and chearing as a team. How many times did they come back. If we lost this game its because of the damn goalies we have. ( i dont know what was wrong with huet..he might have smoked a spliff) anyways…
An intersting fact about this game is that everone in the team had atleats one shot except for dandenault! Pretty amazing.
December 5th, 2006 at 2:28 am
Wow - that was the weirdest Habs game I’ve seen so far this year. From an effort standpoint, this was as close to 60 minutes as we put in. It just seemed that it took us 5 decent scoring chances to score for every 1 chance for Boston. Take note that the shots were even despite the fact that we carried the play most of the game. Just goes to show that shot count does not necessarily reflect the play. Maybe our guys were skating so fast we made Huet dizzy or something.
Next game in Jersey, right? Good timing to keep the no consecutive loss streak going with a win against Brodeur. We were robbed tonight, boys - it’s as simple as that. I guess we were due to lose a game we deserved to win … last one being against New Jersey I believe.
If we can get 3 solid periods and solid goaltending we will be unstoppable
And there is no reason to believe this won’t happen.
December 5th, 2006 at 4:51 am
man I hate to say it but I think our 2 game losing streak will begin vs the devils… We have as much chances of beating them at New Jersey as the Bruins had a chance of beating us at home :S
December 5th, 2006 at 4:55 am
I really do believe that Kovy could have tied that game at the end. What happened? Did he just freeze? Either way - silly bugger.
December 5th, 2006 at 11:09 am
The officials are getting worse and worse as every game go by. We are only at a quarter of the season and already they have stopped calling very obvious penalties. The hooking on Ryder should have been called at the end although the Habs were really dumb to send 6 players on the ice with Aebisher still on the ice.
Aebischer also lost a great opportunity to show what he was capable of last night…
December 5th, 2006 at 12:05 pm
It always hurts to lose a game like that. BUT crazy enough I felt like it may have been our best game as a team. Lets be honest if Huet plays anywhere close to his level we win hands down. If THomas does not come out red hot then we blow them out. YOu have to love the penalty killing, they did not allow Boston to enter our zone. Chara got dominated all night long in the corners. This would have definetely been a game that Higgins would have shined for sure. I think the non call at teh end was a big blunder and if the refs had known Boston would come right down the ice and score they would have called the cross check. YOu could tell they wre tyring to put the whistles away in the third especially when they screwed up on the Koivu call.
December 5th, 2006 at 12:22 pm
Samsonov just has to go. Scratch him, bench him, send him to the minors, trade him I don’t care. He’s absolutly invisible out there. This is getting ridiculous. Kovalev isn’t much better and Ryder can only score on the powerplay and even that seems to be rare.
And hopefully this will put an end to the talk that Huet isn’t human. He isn’t Brodeur, Kiprusoff or Luongo. He can’t face 40 shots a night, play 10 games in a row with that amount of work and play at the same level. With the back to back games coming up this week Aebischer should start in Jersey.
Their inability to string together more then 2 wins in a row is going to cost them, especially in Decembre, their scheduale is brutal. And since their playing the Devil’s I’ve got a bad feeling that they’re about to suffer their first 2 game losing streak.
December 5th, 2006 at 12:42 pm
David Ettedgui sends in the following: “On tonight 110% show in Montreal,Michel Villeneuve and Michel Bergeron said that at the Montreal -Boston game tonight the whole scout team of the Vancouver Canucks attended the game as well as 2 scout’s of the Pittsburgh Penguins, they said they are here to see Sheldon Souray, also P.J Stock was on the show and said ,with the lack of offence from the secound line(again tonight)he taught Bob Gainey as no choice but to pull the trigger.Mr Villeneuve was suggesting the name of Markus Naslund and the fact that Souray would be closer to his daugther in Los Angeles.I no you are writting that the Habs will keep Souray ,but i have to admit that those rumors are getting stronger every day.”
December 5th, 2006 at 12:53 pm
The Naslund rumor dosen’t make sense from a cap standpoint though unless Kovalev was going with Souray cause Naslund makes 6 miilion and Souray onlt makes 2.3 and the Habs are already close to the cap.
December 5th, 2006 at 1:16 pm
They better be getting something else….
Souray & Niinimaa for Naslund
Souray & Niinimaa & Traverse for Naslund & bucket of pucks + draft choice
Souray & Aebischer & Niinimaa for Naslund & Luongo & Willie Mitchell/Fitzpatrick
Samsonov & Traverse for Seabrook & bucket of pucks + draft choice
tough stretch coming up…they should have won yesterday…just to unfocused ( good comebacks but let the Bruins continually take advantage. )
Ryder has to start finishing off his chances and Kovalev has to be more productive. Huet gave too many cheap ones away. Go Habs Go!
December 5th, 2006 at 2:23 pm
Youpi for Naslund, how does that sound?
Actually it is the coaching which is letting the defense act like the fourth line of the other teams offense, did you see Markov’s scoring attempt on his own net?
It is time Montreal fire their defensive coach, send their entire defensive line, bring up the rookies who know how to play defense and promote Souray to a forward position where he can contribute more….and definitely Youpi for Naslund, and force Gainey to do a public opinion poll before he trades his prospects….talk about bad trades, dealing away your future and paying big bucks for broken down hockey players?
December 5th, 2006 at 2:24 pm
Habs1: Its only one little loss to teh bruins. Sure I was mad yesterday but I lets not get out of control. WE played good if not great. Teams lose games like that every once in awhile. Sure it would be great if every team coulg go 82-0 but thats not possible. A trade will be made but when Gainey is ready and the best possible trade is availble. Not because we get a undeserving loss.
December 5th, 2006 at 2:26 pm
Warning:
The Devils will try ot lure us all to sleep on Wednesday. It will not be fun too watch but hopefully we can pull it out.
Has Brodeur every sat out a game vs the Habs? Probably not.
December 5th, 2006 at 2:50 pm
Who the hell would want Markus Naslund??? I don’t want anybody from Vancouver, they all suck even the Sedin sisters. Forget the Canucks rumours unless this is 1986 and they want to give us Cam Neely. Forget the Souray trade, ain’t gonna happen. Hopefully Bob will steal another ’superstar’ at the deadline like he did when he fleeced the Rangers for Kovalev (and where is that Jozef Balej guy now anyway?) I want grit and defense not more Naslund type once-in-a-blue-moon-I-score offense, we get enough of that from Kovalev and Samsonov. Gimme more Mike Johnsons… Shane Doan, Mike Peca, Ryan Smyth types.
December 5th, 2006 at 3:22 pm
Logic would predict that Huet/Abs will split the upcoming games against N.J. and N.Y. Any predictions on the order? Huet had a bad game, big deal. The earlier he bounces back the better. I don’t think he’s fatigued - he’s a pro athlete - he just had a bad game. I would put Huet in tomorrow against Jersey, Abs on Thurs at the Isle and then back with Huet on Saturday for the big game against the Sabres.
December 5th, 2006 at 3:27 pm
Has anyone heard any updates on Higgins? At one point, I heard he had the date against the Isles marked on his calendar (this Thurs) as a return. Given that I have heard nothing about a potential impending return, I doubt that’s going to happen.
December 5th, 2006 at 4:08 pm
Higgins return is mid-late December.
He’s started skating
December 5th, 2006 at 4:28 pm
Josef Balej - he’s with Vancouver….

that’s another disappointment!!
Let’s get Higgins back and put Higgins with Latendresse and Kovalev together. That combination can’t hurt and will see if Kovalev can recover the touch!!
December 5th, 2006 at 4:33 pm
I say put Huet against Brodeur.
But the chances of winning are slim. We always had trouble with the devils
December 5th, 2006 at 4:34 pm
Actually Kostysisn was good for Kovalev….maybe too good. Why does Gainey and Carbo keep sending the good rookies down every time they show good hard work?
December 5th, 2006 at 6:32 pm
Smiler2729:
lol! I went to the website and list my comment. You guys should read all other comments. Pretty funny though.
Theres mine:
Name Comments Favorite NHL Team
3224. Jack /I do not want the “new” NHL to change the Habs jersey. It is a disgrace to us that someone or a group of people rule over our belonging(Habs jersey), and it is a tradition to us to remain with the current jersey we possess. Montreal Canadiens
December 5th, 2006 at 6:48 pm
We just need a balanced attack, getting four lines of effort & success going.
There is ability on the team. We just have to cut out the mental (stupid) errors and stop giving the other team chances to get back into the game or to take a leg up in the game. I’m expecting a trade any time. Samsonov is one to go and maybe Chicago will be his home. The other could be a tougher combination, depends on who takes the bait.
Let’s beat the Devils and Brodeur. It seems that when we’re supposed to win, the Habs lose and now we’re supposed to lose, does that mean we’ll put together a good effective game face on and win!!! Go Habs Go!
December 5th, 2006 at 6:52 pm
I can’t believe you guys. It’s like you want to want trade everybody that’s not living up to the expetations that YOU put on them. Have you listened to any of the players talking off the ice this year? Are you not hearing them speak about the chemistry on the team this year and how it feels more like a team this year than it has for a long time? I’m pretty sure you are all the same bunch of people that will be pretty quick to be on the Kovalev, Samsonov and Ryder fan club WHEN they come out of their little slumps. It is only 2 months into the season remember, so my advice to you is to stop your whining and let the guys that run the team, run the team. The rest us, let’s just be fans.
December 5th, 2006 at 7:16 pm
Hab-a-dab-a-doo:
I agree with you that we are all over-reacting about Kovy, sammy and friends. However, we can’t just sit there and be happy fans about what is happening. If we don’t critic the team once in a while to show our opinion and keep on watching the game and buying habs stuff, well then the organization will think that its doing things fine and that it doesn’t have to try to get the cup to make us happy. Same thing about the jerseys. If we don’t shout about a bit to try and get things to go our way, we will always be forced to accept whats given to us.
By the way, I don’t know how long that petition has been up for, but 3000 signatures won’t even faze buttman. We gotta get way more people guys
December 5th, 2006 at 8:34 pm
Not being able to string more then 2-3 wins in a row could, at the end of the season, cost the Habs a playoff spot with the way Boston and Ottawa are playing right now. The east is to tight to go into a slump outside of Philly and Florida.
Since the Habs on most nights, except for last night in a game they outplayed Boston and really deserved to win, can’t seem to string together 3 full periods. And I know that it’s boring but why not play trap hockey for that one period so Cristobal or Abby don’t get shelled?
December 6th, 2006 at 8:00 am
yeah well as long as it doesnt get as boring as the way New Jersey plays, it could be alright. But then again you gotta watch out for it not to backfire since your always on defense
