Habs Hit the Road

The Habs start a 3 game road trip tonight which will see them meet Philly, Ottawa and Detroit.

It’ll be crucial to get off to a good start with a decisive win against Philly, the worst team in the league. Because the game in Ottawa will be a challenging one and the Sens have climbed within 3 points of the Habs. Although the Habs have 2 games in hand.

The Senators still haven’t played their best hockey and the larger the gap the Habs can make it the better.

When is the last time the Habs finished above the Sens in the standings?

The Ottawa game will be the first game of Hockey Day in Canada which will be broadcast coast to coast.

Am I neglecting the Flyers? The Flyers DID beat the Canadiens once already this year.

If the Habs lose to the Flyers again that would be quite embarrassing because if anyone has watched the Flyers a few times this year, you know that their record is deserved. They are awful. They have basically given up on the season.

A couple consecutive wins will get the Habs back on track and then two great matchups against the Sens and Red Wings.

The Habs and Wings meet rarely and it’s always a good metric to see how the Habs compete in Hockeytown.

Sheldon Souray voted into the All-Star starting lineup. Congratulations to Sheldon who has certainly been a leader and a rock on the PP for the Habs.

A career season, starting All-Star nomination, and an unrestricted free agent. If you’re a betting man the smart wager would be that these are Sheldon’s last games in the Tricolore.

Souray could realistically pull in 5 million a season now. Maybe more. You know he’ll at least be shopping it, and other teams are willing. Can the Habs offer something like that? Would that not leave chicken bones and scraps for Markov, Rivet and company?

And that’s assuming Souray still wants to be a Hab.

Enjoy the rocket blast while you can.

The next 3 games are crucial for us. If we are unable to beat Philly,(the worst team in the league), this road trip will not bode well for us. Ottawa is playing very well now, and too is Detroit.
But can someone explain how a horrible team like St. Louis can beat NJ, in NJ, and we can’t beat them, NOT EVEN ONCE! That’s a disgrace. If we fail to beat Philly, it would be a HUGE EMBARRASSMENT!

This morning on Spectors…..The Avs are offering Theodore and a FIRST round pick for any warm body around the league.

    he he he…..

Oilers and Rangers are getting ready to deal….

    AND….theres something afoot in Beantown

Marchement is filing his retirement papers with the league….

Tampa Bay scouts attended the last three habs games and are cited as being interested in Grabovski and Souray…..hmmmm….didnt see that one coming, especially since Tbay wont move one of their big three. Not sure who we’d want after that. Will have to see if the same scouts watch the Bulldogs tonight where Grabby is due to start.

Wouldnt it be fun to be able to tap Bob Gaineys phone just to see what everyone seeks and is offering?…lol…oh well, one can dream cant they?

Ever since Theo, I’ve always been a little suspicious of any player that has a big year right before his contract is up. Maybe that’s unfair to Souray, as he had some injury problems before now. Also, HB you called it: he’s always been a leader — I remember him calling out Kovalev when Kovalev cost a playoff game against the Bruins a couple of years ago.

But this suspicion definitely applies to Bonk. He was a decent fourth line centre before this year. Now all of a sudden he’s showing his talent? I’m glad to have it for this season, but I think Gainey’s smart enough to see Bonk’s motives.

Not sure that the Habs would have the cap space to sign Souray next year anyway. Markov’s due a fat raise too.

As for the “rumour” that TB are looking at a trade with the Habs: I don’t know about their lack of willingness to trade their big three, but who would want their enormous salaries? The three of them alone take up close to half the cap space.

Gainey’s been pretty careful to balance his roster. He gets production across the board and more or less in line with what he pays them (with the obvious exception of Samsonov). TB gets plenty of production from their big three, but no one else. Someone’s gotta tell their GM that hockey’s a team game.

Last nite watched an interview with Souray, Rivet made the the comment Souray was pushed to a great start to prove himself to the critical Hab masses ,SEE WHAT BITCHING CAN DO!Maybe we can ***** this team to the finals. Also , with four D men and assorted other players having to be resighed for next year, now would be a time for these said players, before the trade dead line, state there true wishes. After -all don’t want to presure players that haven’t brought a cup to Montreal to reach that goal.Isn’t the best way to ask for a lot more by being a proven winner?

The Canadiens better be ready to skate from the drop of the puck tonight. Philly will get a lift from Forsberg’s return tonight. If we come out slow, and Nittimaki (spelling?) is on, we could be in for a surprise. I don’t want to hear any of this “for some reason we just didn’t come out ready to skate” in the post game comments. Let’s see 60 minutes of intensity.

Re: TB, I the big 3 account for 1/2 of their payroll. Maybe that explains why they have a few players that are at the top of the point standings, but a team that is out of the playoffs. Which would you rather have? A couple superstars or a balanced team that is a legitimate contender?

high 4 habs (BLOG #1)- to answer the St. Louis Blues question, they’re are one of the hottest teams hockey ever since mid December - 8-2-3 record! With only one of the loss with a point differential over 1. This is a different team under coach Andy Murray but these guys are not making much noise because of the hole they dug themselve in the beginning of the season. First impressions are decieving and teams may be taking them too lightly.

Still does not explain our troubles against them! I think they beat us at own game of trap hockey. We get too impatient waiting for them too make a mistake!

I noticed Huet has as many pts as Murray in nearly as many games… it maybe time we play Huet upfront in his off nights on the fourth line & PPK. He can play center with Streit?!?! might cut down on the shots on goal, but Carbo will have to teach him to block pucks laying down. It would look kinda funny if he were to use the butterfly style out on the Blue line… although, it might start a trend!

Izzy : I don’t see Michael Cammalleri playing with Kovalev and Samsonov. I don’t know much about this guy, but IMO it’s not the type of player that will make those guy produce. And anyone know what is his contract ?

Samsonov is OUT, nothing more. 4th line player, that’s its that’s all. Try to trade him for a hockey puck or what so ever, but this guy won’t produce until end of next year.

For Souray, just don’t trade him, we need this guy if we want to go farther in the playoff. I am sure if the Habs get far in the Playoff, lot of these guy will want to sign back with the habs even if the price is lower. All the players want to be part of a winning organization and to have a chance to win the Stanley Cup in Montreal is something a lot of players would love to.

Ryder, why is he still playing in the first line ? With Latendresse and Koivu, it’s not bad but with Higgins, don’t see him much. May be first line with Latendresse, Koivu, Higgins would be good and a second line with Samsonov, Kovalev and Ryder ?

Better win that one tonight ! Not because Federov is back, that we should let them win.

J-Nic - Ryder scored 3 pts last game… I think were all hoping he opens it up a bit, maybe breakout for the next few?

Kovalev-Pleks-Higgins on 2nd line? Kovalev can pass and score as seen on the powerplay and when Sammy away from the puck. Higgins and Pleks play well together and thrive when fed one-timers?!?!

Drop Sammy to third were he can perform memorizing spins to lull other teams top lines into a deep sleep!

Good thing we won. this game should have been a gimme. but if our D plays this way against Ottawa and Detroit, we’ll lose both those games. Nice to see Ryder back on track. Looks like he found his shot again. How bad is Samsonov? He missed an empty net goal. Is he pathetic or what? Also thought Lapierre did a good job, and Koivu looked very strong, as usual. Aebischer looked shaky in the 1st and 2nd period. Good thing not alot of dangerous shots his way. He makes me nervous in nets.

At least Johnson played for his money, but hey, when its the worst team in the NHL it doesn’t take much to look like a millionaire….Montreal the only team stupid enough to pay broken down has beens like they are superstars…..

Where the hell was the defense? And we pay Streit big money for what? And Markov, what is with his shabby performance, he seems to do well with Kostysisn, maybe it’s time to hook up Markov with Kosty, even if it is in Hamilton. About the only way Montreal will see one type of playoffs, its sad when Gainey thinks the Stanley Cup also applies to the farm team, someone forgot to tell Bob that the Hamilton Bulldogs don’t get the Stanley….maybe it’ll be too late for Bobby there to realize that he has his rookies in the wrong place…..

Watching the game on Demand last night, one of the Philly commentators made a hilarious comment about how it was good to see Forsberg was back and looking good… thats not the funny part cause he did look alright against the Habs, but the funny thing is that he went on to say because “it would boost his stock being so close to the trade deadline and showing his stuff against the Habs, who would absolutely drool over the opportunity to have him on the team for their second line!”

I say BullsH(@#@t! Only if Philly kept paying his salary. There is no doubt his play is above average, but to say his play in one game does not justify the **** he has been experiencing and putting Phili through. It wouldn’t last 5 minutes in Hab-land. $5.75 million part time player would only be worth the even swap of Sammy and Nimmy in my view which make about this much together.

It’s worth the risk this year, imagine Peter in a Habs jersey.

Geeeezzzz! I tried not to, but I gotta ask it! Are you guys ever happy with the Habs? They win, you complain! They lose, you panic!

It seems that many of you have it in for Sheldon Souray even though he was just voted as a starter for the All star team, and is having a career year. Souray stated publicly in The Gazette at the beginning of the season that he wishes to remain in Montreal so why would you waste your time and efforts doubting him.

Many of you complain about Michael Ryder who has scored more goals by far in the last three seasons than any other Hab, and is one goal away from being the team leader in goals again this year.

Unbelievably, some even complain about Bob Gainey who has undergone personal tragedy after tragedy, and still stays as on as GM to continue to transformation of the pile of sh*t Canadiens of three years ago into the competitive team that they are today.

Can anyone say anything positive about the Canadiens on this site? Just once in awhile… I wonder why any of these players would stay to put up with this **** when they could be off in Los Angeles soaking up the sun and not being ridiculed for their successes.

He doesn’t even want to play in Philly. he keeps complaining about a skate to fit his foot. Habs Phan was bang on, for once we actually saw the D-men try and shut down rushes into the zone, definitely could use some more work cause the other team still managed to get a whole lot of shots in there.

Part of what made the Habs look good was that Philly has been bad all year.

But when you see them play against other teams, like Buffalo, the D-men look like they are standing still…

This team is 24-13-5. Has the third most points in the East and is on a bit of a roll right now. They do not need wholesale changes. Do they have a few leaks, sure but every team does, some people here are acting as if a torpedo blew out an entire side of the ship and that they’re sinking to the bottom.

And Theo? Give me a break. He’s the back-up in Colorado to Peter Budaj who isn’t that great himself.

Oh, and now that you mention it. Forsberg would be a great pickup for a cup run cause the Habs would only have to pay 1/2 to 1/4 of his salary and he’s a UFA at the end of the year so they wouldn’t be stuck with him after the playoffs.

The Habs need to play better defense and not allow as many shots on net. I aree with some people on this site that if they allow a lot of shots against the Senators and Red Wings, then they will lose both. I think Montreal can compete with Ottawa and I feel they can beat them. They have played them well this season and should do so again tomorrow. I am not sure how they will do against the Red Wings but they should at least be able to compete with them. Montreal plays well against the good teams so we will see how they do. I hope they do well in the next couple of games so that we can put some breathing room between us and the Senators who are suddenly breathing down our necks. We were 12 points ahead of them a couple of weeks ago but now we are just 3 points ahead. Let’s start a winning streak again!

hey coutNY_HabsFan, your spelling is terrible but your observations are spot on. I can live with the misspelling: keep the observations coming!

And you gotta say this for joshtm: at least he’s consistent. There were plenty of others here whining and moaning during the brief downturn, and he’s the only one sticking to his criticisms. I still think he’s dead wrong, but at least he ain’t fickle.

    coutNY_HabsFan to answer your question.
The deal would have to include 23 year old Pitkanen and Forsberg.
Philly is shopping Pitkanen as we speak. They want a young D prospect in return.

I’m not sure what they would want, but I’m sure we can give something up.
You gotta give something to get something and a player like Samsonov could be easily replaced.
All those young players we have in the farm 10% will make it to the NHL, the others down the toilet.

Now’s the time to take a shot.
Let’s start weeding out the players we think will make it or break it.

    - I pledge to work on the spelling and grammer. most of time, I am WRITING thoughts quickly on the blog to make points, that may reference previous blogs (while at work), so I do always have time to check the spelling and grammer… but I now know why I was passed over for all those literary Awards!

I take it as harmless fun none the less and enjoy the insight even if it is directed at me!

    Let’s see:
Samsonov: $3,525,000 history of various leg injuries…
Ninnima: $2,508,000 history of ankle injuries
Streit: $ 600,000 history of flu
and knowing Bob’s horrible trading habits, kick in Grabby, Price and Youppi…

For Forsberg $5,750,000 history of groin, leg, concussion, you name it Forsberg got it….classic for Gainey, lottsa salary, and lottsa injuries, classic hookem, minor penalty star…all the ingredients for a Hab, and he’s small too….

I forgot to include Pitkanen’s $2,000,000 salary and of course hstory of groin, abdominal etc…. three inches taller than the skinny Forsberg….

We’d have to throw in Murray I guess to even it all off, and of course for good measure we’d throw in future picks, and heck why not throw in Kirk Muller too….and maybe a poutine wagon

ok, the recipe for victory against the senators. 1- 1 pound of fresh crisp passes. 2- 1 litre of blocked shots. 3- 350ml of consitency through 3 periods.
4- 40g of shots on net( 1g per shot). 5- 3 tablespoons of koivu’s magic ( 1 per period). 6- a dash of ryders shots on net. and finaly 7- a pinch of huet standing on his head. if we mix all this together we will produce the winning formula. so let’s get cooking boys. it’s in ya!!!! go habs go

Phoque the Leafs and their fans, today is Hockey Day in Canada. All about Canada and its love for the game which as the NHL record books indicate is pretty much dominated by the team from Montreal known as “Les Canadiens” so if any Leaf fan you know starts spouting off about them being the centre of the hockey universe, slam a record book in their ugly faces! Long live the Rocket!

Right on Smiler2729.It will be interesting who calls the game today and how many penalties the Habs will get. I doubt that HNIC will waste much time on Montreal and Quebec since they believe that Taranna is the center of the universe. BUT WE KNOW BETTER DON’T WE!!! GO HABS GO!!!

    joshtm:
Pitkanen is a bargain at $2M. But we don’t have much to give in return. We gave up our best defensive prospects in Beauchemin and Hainsey - to Columbus via waiver. Ouch.

Niinimaa is useless and clogs up cap space, true. But we got rid of the equally useless Ribeiro in return — and we just have to live with Niinimaa for a year. Besides, the aforementioned lack of defensive prospects required some depth on the blueline with Bouillon and Dandenault out early.

And Streit is a bargain at $600k. A 7th dman who can qb the pp, kill penalties as a winger, and skate regular shifts on the 4th line? Give that man a raise!

NHL Center isn’t carrying the Mtl/Ott game - they have everything else on hockey day in Canada on today, but not the Habs game. What the F? My day and weekend has been ruined. There must be a lot of pissed off Habs fans across the U.S. today.

Are there any remote (expat) Habs fans out there that can suggest any alternate ways via the internet to watch the Habs?

    Help me, please.

Komisaraek, what are you doing? WHat has happened to his game. 4 straight turnovers leading to a goal. What a joke! He is playing like #52 today. But too be honest Komi has struggles alot in the last month. NO denying it. Slow in his own end and lacks any type of offensive talent. If he misses the hit it big time trouble.

I wish I didnt have to say that since he is one of my favs but players like Sammy and Murray cant be blemed for his mistakes.

You call yourselves Habs fans? You can’t see the horrihle mess that is the defense? If you buy a Ford Focus at Ferrari prices don’t complain eh? Who else but the habs would continue to pay millions for injured has-beens?

Oh wait, the rest of the NHL has superior defense, even the Flyers eh? What a miracle, the Habs defense stuck with a league that has superior defense…as if.

The truth is the Habs don’t have a defense. Even the worst NHL team can walk into the Habs end and shoot a million shots. And you make excuses for Ninimaa and Streit? And all Souray does these days is stand around and help the other team, the only time he is good is when the Habs offense actually decides to wake up, that is if it is not getting stupid penalties. Then and only then does Souray show he is a hockey player. What the F- is this, the Habs can only produce when they only have four skaters? You call that a team?

Where the hell is the combined 16 million that is spent on defense? Over twenty million if you add in the friggen goalies and don’t forget the invisible assistant coaching staff….

Why do we keep paying big money for players who are easy pickings for the other teams pathetic offensive fourth lines? Even the other teams fourth lines are scoring on the Habs!! What does that tell you?

Excuse me, I am a Habs fan, I want them to win. I want defense. I want offense. At least we have good goal tending. If it wasn’t for Huet or Abby Montreal would not be where it is, cause Koivu and Kovalev spend most of their time in the penalty box. What kind of leadership is that?

The only time Koivu and Kovalev produce is when we ship up rookies, cause the overpaid offense like Johnson and Downie are has beens, overpaid and underworked. If we got rid of Johnson and Downie’s combined salaries we could get a decent d-man or a decent center to buff up the fourth line.

I hope Ottawa really piles it on, and scores more goals so then Carbo will realize just how crappy our defense is, and maybe trade Rivet. He must go, ASAP! The only reason we beat Philly, is because they are the worst team in the league, and Atlanta has no defence!

You can now officially count me among the people who have finally lost all faith, confidence and any sort of support for Rivet. I hope he never puts on the Habs Jersey again after this year cause it’s not like they can trade him. No one would want him.

But this game is a blip on the radar. They did not come in at all in this game with any kind of passion. That will need to change against Detroit on Monday.
