Alex Kovalev not on waivers.

Bob Gainey has something cooking, apparently Alex Kovalev and $4.5M of his salary was just put on waivers.

Or maybe not.

This turns out not to be true, a mistake printed by the Associated Press blown out of proportion. Got to love the Internet and rumors at trade deadline time….it won’t be the last one.

Clearing $4.5 Million of salary sure got some people excited.

UPDATE!: The Fourth Period reports Kovalev’s agent denies that his client has been placed on waivers. Canadiens rep Donald Beauchamp laughingly denied it, and confirmed that it was Aaron Downey, not Kovalev, who’d been placed on waivers.

Chicago has just traded Smolinski to the Canucks.
Caps traded Zednik, again to the NYI; Now that trade is a joke. Do you know what you’re getting NY?
Roberts(pendind him waiving his no trade clause), is going to Pittsburgh.
If we don’t trade Souray ,it would be horrible for the habs future. We could rebuild a team around what we would get in return, nsmely 1st round draft picks, probably a player off a roster, and other picks.

I can almost see a Samsanov and Perezhogin for Aucoin and Seabrook or something resembling that, i heard chicage was trying to sign Samsanov last summer.
This being said i believe Sammy has no movement clause and i’m not sure which 10 teams he is willing to go to. I’d rather not have Aucoin and his Salary, but i can’t see us moving sammy without taking some money back in return. I don’t really want to lose Perez but if we could get Saebrook in return i’d do it.

Don’t have a good feeling about tonites game. Someone try to tell me otherwise but I think this team just doesn’t have what it takes to push themselves into the playoffs. Besides; I think many of the Leafs remeber last years sweep which ultimately lead to their demise so I beleive they’re more motivated than we are.
I do hope I am wrong though

Samsonov must know that if he stays in Montreal he is dealing with a coach, team, and for all I know some team mates who are beginning to find him a pain. If he takes the deal with Chicago (I believe its there, and he will) he gets a fresh start on a team he can be a leading light on, and he helps out the Montreal organization (such things are remembered). There are only so many people, and so many times you can annoy. This guy needs to start making some friends. Your kind of town (Sammy) Chicago is!

In a way I feel sorry for Bob Gainey, no body loves him enough to give him a decent trade, yet he is under pressure to let Souray go. Thing is, you don’t know what he is being offered in return. For all we know Pittsburgh could be dangling Ovechkin or someone like that and knowing Gainey, he’s gonna say no.

Good point LJ55. I am thankful that Gainey has at least some common sense. Rivet was one of those millionaires who just were not producing. Although Rivet would be great when he retires as a Habs exec of some type, perhaps Rivet is not ready to retire yet.

Maybe Rivet thinks the Sharks have a chance and maybe Rivet will propel the Sharks to the cup! And to think we treat his Rivetness like he was nobody…

Honestly Gainey is probably more afraid of doing a horrible trade, what having acquired so much crap, its no wonder that he is not even gonna gamble on getting the leagues best if it was offered to him. Gainey has painted himself into the corner, he is playing Russian Roulette now with four bullets. The only person who can blame Gainey is Gainey.

Geeze Loooease, I am suprised Gainey and Carbo can’t see it. Ryder and all those others just being muscled. That’s what happens when you don’t have rookies to gnaw them down.

Abby just doesn’t have it, neither does Huet. Gainey needs to trade for a decent goalie, trade both of them.

Friggen Kovalev gave it away. So much for the Koivu line, the rookies are not there to back it up.

I wonder if Begin is next on the Gainey cross hairs. But Rivet was unhappy early in the season. So was Samsonov, makes you wonder if Gainey is gonna trade Sammy for Aucoin now, if only to shut me up.

But hey at least it’s nice to see the whole team playing as a team for once, except for being outmuscled and knocked down. Montreals needs an enforcer of some type, not a real dirty one, but hey when you have the likes of the Sen’s and their hitmen, the Leafs and their hitmen, the league has all but declared war on each other. After the habs barely beat the leafs, I have come to 1 conclusion.
There is no way we’re making the playoffs with this team! NO FUC@#$KEN WAY!
WE HAVE NO GOALTENDING! A junior B goalie is better than Aebischer!
2 of the leaf goals should NEVER EVER have gone in. What the hell is Carbo doing? He van never put Aebischer back in. Put him on waivers.
The habs as usual stopped playing in the 3rd period. We have 2 more games with the leafs and I guarantee they will beat us in both those games!
Gainey needs to be a seller. Trade Souray, for the future of this team!
We really do have the WORST GOALTENDING IN THE LEAGUE!
there is no way with these goalies we will win. And BTW, look at the habs schedule: We play only 1 team below 500. The rest are playoff contenders.
Guys, we didn’t dominate them. We should have won this game big time, but we didn’t. We held our breath until the last second, against the leafs?
What does that tell you? It tells me, that against much better teams, we will fall flat on our buts! I’m ready to wave the white flag, and so should GAINEY!
Trade, while we can get good value for Souray. Remember, it’s for the future of this club, because this team is going NOWHERE!

Souray is mother fu***. This mother fu*** made the entire team lose their confidence which seemed indestructible. Man, this guy has all the skills to make the team lose its confidence. what was he thinking when he jumped ike jaki chan????? Was he shooting a movie or was he paid to do so?? Remember when souray was questionned at the begginning of the year why the team was doing so good, he said it was because of their strong goaltending (by Huet). How in the name of GOD do you guys want the team to play well when the goaltender is shooting a movie scene???????????

Now the Leaf Nation pussycats are going to cry like they do about ‘93 and Kerry Fraser… Geez, they bug me. They think their team is so good (for the 40th year in a row) and that they deserve the Cup without even earning it because they KNOW NOTHING ABOUT HOCKEY. With their little aluminum foil homemade Stanley Cups running up and down Yonge Street throwing up their Pizza Pizza slices cuz they can’t handle their beer.

It’s beyond me how a team that has done nothing but FAIL for 40 straight years (not even a losing appearance in the Final since then either) can garner and maintain such a fervent following… oh, yeah, I remember, it’s cuz their fans are STUPID!

Here’s the latest I HOPE THIS IS NOT TRUE:

Souray to Anaheim “Growing Possibility Tonight”

That according to a few sources. One Duck’s source said the rumored deal is Souray for Ryan Shannon, Kent Huskins, Fourth Round pick. Also heard was that Bryzgalov could be involved in the deal. The first round pick that came from Tampa tonight is “a necessity.”

Will the habs ever play 60 minutes? I doubt it. That, and their very difficult schedule the rest of the way, will in fact prevent us from making the playoffs. Unlike some of you, I would prefer to see Souray getting dealt. People who don’t agree, must be satisfied with this team finishing in 8th place, and never getting any better. Just when we had their number, basically that is they are just wimpy european players, they put in one or two good games and basically spend the rest of the season in the penalty box at the wrong times. We used to sing SHANANANA, but thanks to Koivu and Kovalev, we never know if this duo will pull prima donna penalties and lose us the game.

It used to be fun to get ahead and actually know the lead was gonna stay.

Souray is having a career year, but I’ll guarantee he won’t come close to a season like this, EVER AGAIN. He is a defensive liability, and defence comes first. How come he couldn’t score last year? He’s having the same type of year McCabe had last year. And look at McCabe’s record this year. only 12 goals.
Yes, he has a great shot, but Souray’s numbers have dwindled the past 20 games.
He’s not worth more than 5 million. He can score, but he can’t stop the opposition from scoring. He’s not the only D man who can score! get over it.If he was such a great leader, how come this team doesn’t play for 60 minutes? or show up every game? It will be a different scenario next year. Once players get a huge salary increase, they stop playing. He won’t be the same next year, and we shouldn’t mortgage this team for 1 player!

Hey Kovalev, get this, 10 percent of the total team salary.

The habs pay their players a total of $43,761,100

Kovalev gets over ten percent of that, out of 28 players, the only other person to get more than Kovalev is Sakku Koivu.

The real heroes on the team, Pleks, Higgins, Halak, Begin, all make under a million dollars. The millionaires who have brought us a slump that extended from new years until just recently, and some five place standings, all make over two million dollars each.

Kovalev only has 38 points, or not even more goals than Souray. We pay Alex to score, and he’s only got 13 goals in what 56 games? That’s almost 125 thousand for every point. Compare that to Pleks who gets the same number of goals, Pleks makes not even half a million. That works out to about 12 thousand dollars per point. What a big phoquen difference, the guy who has almost single handedly pushed, cajoled and helped to bring the team out of a slump, makes less.

And then you wonder why are we peeved off at Alex?

Xhabsfan: here’s my answer. It’s fine to have Souray on your team, if you already have a great defence. WE DON’T! If he’s traded to a team like Anaheim, they already have a great D, so they want him for their PP. We aren’t in the same position as them. If he craps out for another team next year, they have OTHER GOOD D MEN, and lots of other talent. We don’t. We need to rebuild, because right now, we have NO GOALTENDING, NO D, NO OFFENCE, and we CAN’T XCORE 5 on 5, even with Souray. And if we trade him for a good defenceman who could, in time, become a great D man, and also get a quality scorer, and 2, #1
draft picks, wouldn’t you do that deal? almost anyone would. And what happens if we sign him for alot of $$, and he gets injured? What do we have to show for 6 million? NOTHING! Let’s face it, with or without him, we’re not going anywhere this year, so trade for the future of this franchise. I’m sure, 2 years from now, you would like to have a team with talent like Ottawa, right?
Think with your head, not your heart. We’ve been down this road for the past 15 years. It’s time for a change. And hey, you never know what will happen. If we trade him as a rental, he still might resign with us in the offseason.
Anyways, that’s the way I feel about.

Hey R habs, the problem is not Souray. The problem is number 11, number 17, or hey just pick any hab who makes over two million dollars, they are the problem. At least Souray plays for his keep. Our forwards and defensive specialist, even those two deadbeats, Boully and Dandy, are all underplaying, they are not producing. Granted Markov is about our only shining star in defense, but hey the rookies outshine him, so while Markov may be underated, he is far from being star material.

Why shoot yourself in the foot, why pay for a 20 goal scorer for seven million or even five million when you already have one for under 2 million? That is Souray. No, no, nah, in Gainey’s book, Souray is worth more than what we pay him.

Getting rid of Dandy, Boully, Koivu and Kovalev, Johnson and Ninnima, Abby, Begin, that would free up over half of the total payroll, or some 25 million dollars, target those players who have cost you games and money.

Just imagine what we could get for 25 million dollars?

Instead of waiting until the summer, when players are not available, generally and all you get are those troublesome players no one wants, use the trade deadline to get what you need. We have had enough of Gainey’s and Carbo’s Lotto 6/49 approach to gambling on broken down injured has beens, our Dr. Frankenstein has had limited success recouping injured vets, we have only Koivu who came back from the death bed literally.

But big difference he was not dying or having body parts falling off like the bunch we have.

But realistically, do you honestly believe, that our goaltending will get us into the playoffs? Have you seen the schedule the habs have the rest of the season? It’s brutal! I was watching the local sports(MTL), and even they were saying that with the goalies we have now, it’s just not happening.
If Gainey get’s a bonafide goalie, maybe we squeeze into the playoffs, but eliminated in the 1st round. Don’t you want more than that?
Hey, maybe we can try for Aucoin. He’s got a great shot too.

The only way Souray doesn’t finish the season in a Habs jersey is if Gainey gets offerred something ridiculous he can’t turn down. Considering Rivet went for a 1st round pick and a 4th-6th d-man 10 yrs younger, other GMs will HAVE to overpay to acquire Souray’s services and they know it. I am a die hard Habs fan for life. But what if it were Koivu that was high sticked last night and Montreal lost like that there would be some bitterness today right. I call a spade a spade. It should have been a penalty. I would be like that as well and you would have too. You guys have absolutly nothing to brag out today.

I hate the leafs but I have to give credit where credit is due and the leafs battled back and gave the Habs a run for the money. The leafs are not out yet. They have to play Montreal again yet. Be careful about what you say boys it just might come back a bit you in the ass.

11 points for koivu in the last 5 games.

      Kovalev was incredible.

      Abby …..um…had a tough night.

      Bonk….is a force.

Komisarek hit a few guys so hard their ears are still ringing.

Begin? = guts…..could hardly skate, but he knew how big a game this was….man…broken foot after all….guts?….I’ll say. Craig Rivet said that Begin was different from anyone he has ever met from the shoulders up…..

Souray is staying……and dont think BG doesnt know what his intentions are.He will sign.

Cujo says he will waive his no trade clause this morning to go to Toronto or Montreal….just the fact that he thinks he can mention those two in the same sentence makes me say…dont take him.

      Samsonov for Aucoin?…..nope.

Higgy played with the flu…..not a euro.

as I look out the window, my neighbors dog is ripping open my garbage bags I put at the curb…..sigh…

I’m off today ….how good is that?,,trade center all day baby!….

oh, and good morning Frank……life goes on….the leafs dont.

CUJO…..I’d love to see him in Montreal. We need a good goalie. He still has it. He just needs the right team. Give them Huet and Abby. Huet is another Theodore. “A ONE NET WONDER” They shawn for a brief moment and the light went out.

BOy is Frank a poor loser. Put him in the same class as SUndin and McCabe. Frank edited my last post to make me sound like I had respect for the laffs. HA

For McCabe to grab Markov after the final whistle is pathetic. What a joke. POOR LOSER. You think he would be alittle happier after rodding the Laffs mgt of all that money. And SUndin, what is wrong with him. I thought he was going to bite bill Maccreary with this baked bean teeth. Leafs suck.

ALso out west teh leafs are just one big joke. IN calgary if you mention the leafs you will get slapped. IN Vancouver they piss on leafs fans. IN Winnipeg ther are no leafs fans and in Regina, well who cares.

38 Dalley1 ……Overpaid sissies Euros kicked ass last night. Confidence and motivation are the keys to our success. When we have faith in our scoring and goalies, we win games. The team has no faith in Abby, nor does he in himself. I have never seen a goalie week on their glove side???

Now I’m not defending Frank. Just show some class Brother we are all hockey fans ok.

Just remember Montreal is only a few points above Toronto. Montreal has to face Toronto in Toronto in April. Don’t bark to loud Dog. Pay back can be a BITCH. And that goes for all of the Habs fans in here. Including myself

They were ok last night. I give credit where credit is due. But to be out for a sore elbow, when we have a player playing with a broken foot. I feel that my comments were justified. You say “Confidence and motivation are the keys to our success”. Yes I agree, But when your goalie can’t stop a beach ball, that confidence will qiuckly fade…………..

I taped the game last night, I watched that high stick by murray, over and over and over again, guess what people, it was a friggen dive, murrays stick didnt even come close to scamdins mouth. Im sick and tired of watching this overpaid swedish meatball whining, as if he should not be allowed to be touched on the ice while the f#$%ken prick crosschecks guys from behind. He’s a low life coward who should go back to sweden and rot the rest of his remaining teeth with a lifetime supply of riccola throat lozenges. Seriously, hab bros, if you get a chance to see the phantom high stick, look carefully while they are close to the boards, their sticks tangle, and scammedin suddenly tilts back his head as if he just lost his eyeball, while his head is tilting back, murray’s stick is nowhere near his face. Nice try scammer, typical swedish move, why was there no penalty? Because there was NO high stick. Toronto media were complaining, what bothers me more is the irresponsible reporting that goes on. They have far better equipment than I have, why not look at it further and report the truth? Because it gives Toronto an excuse to soften the blow of the loss. You know, Montreal got away with that one there or else Toronto would have been on the power play and the game could have been different. Its exactly what was reported on Tsn.The T.O media was also complaining on how the referees bad call on torontos goal against Islanders, something should be done about the refs, stating it was one of the worst calls they had ever seen. Big deal, if they want the worst, how about a high stick that caused an eyeball hanging out of its socket, with blood gushing out, and koivu struggling to find his way in panic, millions of people saw it except the friggen 4 refs, and what was the call? NOTHING. It cost the Canadiens the series. THAT was the worst I have ever seen. What did the refs think happened? But if there’s something I hate worse, its a 6 million dollar diving swedish meatball like scammer sundin.

I don’t hate David Aebischer but he’s not a good goaltender and the Leafs didn’t battle back, Abby let them back in the game. The Habs outhit, outscored, outgrinded, outfaceoffed, outplayed Toronto.

And another thing, the Leafs play like spoiled little babies, they can dish it out but sure can’t take it. Those baby-brains deserve everything they get - NOTHING.
Sundin is so overrated and yeah, I didn’t see a high stick either. And for whoever said if it was Koivu we’d be pissed well, it was Koivu in the playoffs last season against Carolina, he nearly lost his eye and even though there was blood and an obvious eye injury, there was no call against Justin Williams.

Just an aside here, Glenn Healy is a moron. TSN and their pro-Toronto crap is so bush, thank God for Pierre Maguire there.

Abby did make a couple of good saves toward the end, but 2-3 goals unimpeded and untipped that any goalie at this level should stop. He looks lost and does move well laterally. He seems to be tougher on the blockerside, which is weird because most goalies are glove side strong. He’s small and plays even smaller in a squat style stance. The game should have not been this close! Carbo should stick with Jaro because even in his loss players felt confident in his abilities…

let’s just pray that Gainey get’s us a goalie today, or else you can just forget it for this year. Besides, it’s not fair to a rookie with no experience, to carry the entire weight of this team on his shoulders. Gainey will probably go after CuJo or Boucher or Esche. And if we can swing a deal for a scorer, that would be great. Perehzogin and Dandenault need to go!

And for whoever said “if it was Koivu we’d be pissed well” I said that yes. And alot of Habs Fans did not like that call. Yes and I for one was pissed as hell at that call as well. But shit happens and calls are not made. It won’t be the last one either. And if that was a hight stick (but everyone says it was no hight stick) then the Habs got away with one. Sundin is a wimp yes. But so is Kovalev. He ranks in the top 10 for sure………….

please tell me its because he knows that Ryan will re sign with the oil next year…

      please?

and now?….what do we do?….do we send Halak back and ride leighton and Abby into the playoffs?…if you believe that you’re nuts.

bottom line is the islanders with this addition will make the show, and either the habs or leafs are out…..smythe is THAT good.
