Deadline Day
-
The Leafs make their way to Montreal for a rare Monday night meeting that happens to be on the cusp of the trade deadline.
The next 24-48 hours should be exciting as the playoff race between the Habs and Leafs is closer than it’s been all year. Tonight could very well be certain player or players last game as Montreal Canadiens.
Does Craig Rivet remember his last game? His days with Montreal are over and he gets a new opportunity with a pretty good hockey club in San Jose.
The trade makes sense for both teams, and particularly the Canadiens. Rivet had deep roots with the Habs, leadership qualities and one guy who just loved to be a Montreal Canadien. A quality you don’t find very frequently these days. With so many people refusing to come play for Montreal, Craig Rivet was the polar opposite - a proud hab.
Character aside, his play this year wasn’t what it needed to be for the Canadiens. The trade makes sense for the Habs bringing in a prospect and a pick and it makes sense for the Sharks who want a little veteran experience on their young blue line. Good luck to Craig in SJ.
One deal is done, are there more to come? Maybe. Most people believe that now Rivet is gone Sheldon Souray is magically going to re-sign for 10 years. There is still a strong chance Souray is gone before the Habs play New York tommorow night.
Gainey commented that the Rivet deal had as much to do with the salary cap and financial aspects than the actual players involved. The same rules apply to Souray, who is arguably ‘worth’ more and whichever team he signs with, he will occupy a large chunk of their cap.
The fact that Souray can be lost for nothing as a free agent almost forces Gainey’s hand. The Canadiens aren’t often in the position to have highly sought after players and with a lot of improvements to be made, HB predicts Souray is playing his last game tonight.
Another popular theory is the Canadiens have their 1st round pick from the Rivet deal and are ready to move it immediately if the right deal is there.
Enjoy the game tonight and take a look at each player as it may be there last as a Hab. Should Souray still go, the blueline will be quite a different looking one from here on in and hopefully the playoffs.

Good luck Rivet!
February 26th, 2007 at 11:07 am
Good luck Rivet! GO HABS GO!
February 26th, 2007 at 11:21 am
Who sitting on in the stands with the young the Blueliner Josh Gorges landing here? Dandy has struggled the past few games or will Souray go? Josh will not arrive in time for tonights game, so status quo for now.
Kovalev and Begin are possible returns this week… which only Adds to the mix of decisions that will need to be made about our future and a playoff push.
February 26th, 2007 at 11:41 am
I would like to see Ryder,Kovalev,Higgins and Sourey stay, The rest what happens….happens
February 26th, 2007 at 11:45 am
I would like to see Ryder,Kovalev,Souray and Higgins stay, The rest….you gotta do what you gotta do
February 26th, 2007 at 11:53 am
Kovalev & Samsonov must go. RYDER stay. Alot of people have a beef with Ryder this season. Why? He is second in goals & third in points. We nne more Canadian players. That Russian Wanker Kovalev. He is Cancer to the Habs. He got a soar little elbow. Players play with broken bones. Suck it up Kovalev and do something for a change.
February 26th, 2007 at 12:01 pm
BOB NEEDS TO PULL THE TRIGER ON BIG FORWARD WHO PUTS POINTS UP EVERYGAME
THATS WHAT WE HAVE ALL BEEN TALKING ABOUT ALL YEAR
TIME IS RUNING OUT AND IF THAT HAPPENES WE WILL MAKE THE PLAYOFFS
AND WE WILL HAVE A GOOD RUN.
WHEN THE HABS ARE THERE ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN
KEEP BELIVEING THAT THE 25TH CUP IS GOING DOWN ST.CATHERINE STREET
GO CARBO GO
February 26th, 2007 at 12:52 pm
Tonights game is going to be pretty important. GO HABS/LAFFS SUCK!!!!
February 26th, 2007 at 12:59 pm
Once again I have to point out this is the time to trade for size Bob,with games against the Maplegoofs,Saberdicks,Bruinturds and the never won nothing Senators, all going to try and overwhelm us out of a playoff spot. Rivit was one of the few fighters the Habs had,so unless Kovalev becomes an inforcer, lol, were in a bad way.As for Frank, the Maplequeers fan,the mental constipation and verbal diarrhea you display is as terminal as your teams playoff hopes, lol.
February 26th, 2007 at 1:05 pm
XHabsfan, I am shocked that you spelled diarrhea correctly. You must be the only Habs fan that owns a dictionary although that didn’t help you spell Rivet properly.
February 26th, 2007 at 1:13 pm
The only way the habs can win tonight, is to force the leafs to play our style. The habs have trouble beating the leafs, because the leafs force the habs into playing their style, which is hitting, slowing the play down, tough aggressive hockey which the habs can’t do. We’re not big enough, or tough enough. If the habs come out skating, and play 60 minutes, they can win. Habs can’t get into the leaf style; it’s a killer.
Whether the habs win or lose tonight, they need to trade Souray. given the trade market values now, we could get in return a good player off the other team’s roster, plus a couple of #1 picks. That could cement our future. If no trade is made, I fear for our future, with doom and gloom ahead.
February 26th, 2007 at 1:23 pm
Downey put on waivers
February 26th, 2007 at 1:30 pm
Gazettte reporting Assitant GM and Accountant have been hanging together this morning… Is there something brewing or are they making room for Josh Gorges???
February 26th, 2007 at 1:30 pm
That’s ok. Raylaff -I mean Raycroft will choke again tonight. His 24 straight start. Oh that is how many Cups the Habs have won. 24. Raycroft usally chokes in the third period.
February 26th, 2007 at 1:31 pm
The Habs are due for a big win over the Leafs.
February 26th, 2007 at 1:36 pm
nobody is going to take Downey. After all, when Samsonov was put on waivers, (and he was better than Downey), nobody grabbed him. I think it was done, so habs could send him to Hamilton, for salary cap reasons. Now with Rivet gone, how much cap room do we have? Is it enough to go out and get a scorer?
February 26th, 2007 at 1:40 pm
Downey is about 10x cheaper than Sammy… and might be a little more attactive to a team looking for an instigator, but who knows???
February 26th, 2007 at 1:42 pm
The Habs are a Gunnin for Lacavelier (I spelled that wrong right).
February 26th, 2007 at 2:02 pm
So is this flu story just a cover up for a big trade that is in the works or are the Habs just getting their excuses ready before the game?
R habs 4 real has a good point about trading Souray. He could bring in a lot of picks and prospects to help the Bulldogs continue their success in the AHL.
February 26th, 2007 at 2:08 pm
Mr. Frank. Why do you hate Our Almighty Habs so much? You should come on over to the winning side. When you go Habs you will never go back brother. Yes Frankie “The Almighty Habs” will be victorious again…………..Starting tonight.
February 26th, 2007 at 2:21 pm
I just read that Chicago has placed Boucher(goalie) on waivers, and Columbus has placed Berard on waivers. Maybe we should go get Berard, because we wouldn’t have to give up any player, and then trade Souray, because Berard would be a replacement.
February 26th, 2007 at 2:27 pm
TSN - Reporting: Saku Koivu and Sergei Samsonov missed practice because of the a Flu this morning?
February 26th, 2007 at 2:29 pm
Gazette reporting both are expected to play tonight…
February 26th, 2007 at 2:39 pm
Hey Frank; Funny you mention diarrhea
I get diarrhea everytime I watch the Laffs play. FIrst I get stomach pains and then when I see Sundin’s ugly grill thats when it comes out.
February 26th, 2007 at 2:41 pm
those teeth… yuck.. .and thats ur captain? Don’t even let us get started on the rest of the team XD
February 26th, 2007 at 2:49 pm
In Sundin’s defense. He can’t help the way he looks. He just looks a ******. The Leafs are not blessed with good looking players like the Habs. The best lookin team in the NHL by far……………..
February 26th, 2007 at 2:53 pm
Ya hear it….Ya hear it………… It’s the winds of change boys. The winds of change. Look out boys it’s a commin………it’s a commin………tonight.
February 26th, 2007 at 2:54 pm
Hey now guys these are men you’re talking about… Hockey players at that… We’re not on the E channel judging “whose hot or not” at the Oscars! jeez, There was a time when a player was considered good unless he was riddle with battle wounds and missing teeth?!?!
February 26th, 2007 at 2:55 pm
R habs 4 real your right on man. That would be a great move.
Pick up Berard and ship out Souray for youth. We could sign Berard for a lot less.
Berard looks to be finally healthy again.
Ryan Smyth’s agent and the Oilers are meeting again today.
The Oilers are looking for a puck moving defensmen and Souray can provide that.
UFA for UFA - RYAN SMYTH FOR SHELDON SOURAY

Berard scares me, his scouting report his flaws “Permanent eye damage limits his on-ice vision. His high-risk style tends to hurt his team defensively. Needs to play the body with more consistency.” Upside “Is an effortless skater. Loves to jump into the play and act as a fourth forward. Has good hands and a booming shot. Oozes offensive talent.” Sounds like Souray without the points…
February 26th, 2007 at 3:41 pm
So, what are we waiting? Jump on it Gainey! Go get Berard, and trade Souray ASAP! Berard might not have as good a shot as Souray, but he would fit the bill. Actually, the player that should be put on waivers, is DANDENAULT!
what a waste of money! he is an absolute zero! He hurts us more with penalties, and lack of defence, and never takes the man out. So, either Dandy or Bouillon should go on waivers. There’s alot of players being put on waivers. take your pick!
February 26th, 2007 at 3:47 pm
Sundin’s teeth were pretty bad until he got them bonded.
The Habs are a pretty team. Pretty light in the loafers. They’ll get manhandled again tonight. Not that they will care, I bet they are all bottoms. I am sure you guys would all be better judges of that
See Snake, I would get sick at seeing the Habs play but it’s usually so funny it’s hard to get upset. Watching them get dominated 5 on 5 as if it were men (the opposition) against boys (the habs)…
I hope Souray stays put and signs a huge extension so that all of the Habs’ fans will be blessed with 5 more years of highlight reel goals.
February 26th, 2007 at 3:59 pm
Frank. May God bless you, the Mentally Ill. I kind of feel sorry for you Leaf people………….NAHHHHHHHH……..
February 26th, 2007 at 4:02 pm
It’s reported on THE SCORE that Koivu and Samsonov are out for tonight’s game. The flu. How can you let the flu stop you from playing in such an important game? What wimps! And you guys say Koivu has heart?
February 26th, 2007 at 4:09 pm
That’s the European’s for you………..They need this game big time. The Flu would not stop me from playing tonight. That’s bullshit. When the going gets tough they bail, jump ship. ******** I say trade all of those wimpy Eroupean ********……………
February 26th, 2007 at 4:21 pm
Kovalev is playing tonight.
February 26th, 2007 at 4:42 pm
Well that puts my mind at ease……….NOT That is a useful as tits on a bull. What’s next he’ll be out with a hangnail………Makes me sick……Overpaid sissies
February 26th, 2007 at 4:49 pm
WE NEED ALL THE HELP WE CAN GET RIGHT NOW.
February 26th, 2007 at 4:50 pm
Yes Sir I agree. That is why Koivu and Samsonov should be playing tonight.
February 26th, 2007 at 4:52 pm
It seems to me that with Rivet gone we now need a veteran defenseman. Our problem with Samsonov has been his salary, ergo we need to pick up a big salary to dump Samsonov. I think we might see a deal with Chicago for Aucoin which would solve everyones problems. Well exept that we need a #1 center and/or pure scoring winger. Guerin I suspect.
February 26th, 2007 at 4:53 pm
Robets may sign with the habs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
February 26th, 2007 at 4:54 pm
Is it for sure that they are not playing.
February 26th, 2007 at 4:56 pm
No thanks……………..
February 26th, 2007 at 5:06 pm
Hey Frank, why dont you go to a toronto make me laughs site and wallow in your self made glory of how great the laughs are this year, your fans are content with winning a game against the habs, and then losing to teams like columbus. Well genious, let me remind you of some past, 40 years and counting, were you even alive then? 70’s, not only were there no cups in toronto, but your best players werent even worthy of kissing the asses of our worst. 80’s, well you guys did so well, that you proved how disgusting your team was,(probably your dad and family)by being the only team in sports history,to wear bags over your heads (including the coach)on national tv for all to see. 90’s, well through all the basement finishes in the 80’s, you would think you could have rebuilt a team, but instead management, raised the ticket prices year after year, then you try to buy your stanley cups by spending with no cap involved, what happened? Montreal goes to the finals with a half team of rookies, spending less than half what you guys did and won the cup. But wait, oh no, this was a conspiracy by the nhl, hey the ref SHOULDA called the penalty on gretzky, then we COULDA had the power play and we WOULDA won, and for sure we WOULDA beat the CANADIENS. You see Frank, that is reality. Montreal doesnt fish for talent, nor do they try to buy their stanley cup, they breed their talent. And when they feel the players are ready, they bring them up to play. They might buy a player or two, but mostly the players are bred. So now that you cant spend your multi millions more than any other team, you will be stuck in oblivion for many more years to come. So whatever you do, dont stick your nose into our teams problems that can be fixed within 1 to 2 years, when your team has at least 4 decades and counting of future comic relief. OH, by the way, I live close to toronto, and I cant stand them more than anything in the world. Did you forget the last 2 back to back games last year when we basically buried you guys and knocked you out of the playoffs? Hmmm? Cant hear you! And we did it with all those sought after superstars on your team, you know, darcy ******, mars sunndin, alex pickamynosky.nikolai andropmeoff, tie dummy, etc. Wow, you should be proud.
February 26th, 2007 at 5:10 pm
Way to go Guy. I could’nt have said it better myself………
February 26th, 2007 at 5:49 pm
Hey Frank, funny you would mention that Montreal should sign Souray to a huge extension. Do you meen like the ones that the Leafs gave to two completely ****** defencemen and now Tucker. Loads of money, long term contracts and no-trade clauses that will help to ensure that the next Canadian team to wind the cup will be Montreal. Certainly not Toronto. Make fun of Montreal all you want, at least this organization wants to win and the fans get upset when they don’t. Fans in Toronto are just happy so long as they have a bunch of goons and divers in uniform.
Have a great day!
February 26th, 2007 at 6:00 pm
Wow, those were some clever names. And when your last cup was 14 years ago you really shouldn’t be chirping. Stick to the present.
Tucker is getting a 3 year deal. How is that long-term? I was being sarcastic about signing Souray. He is worse than McCabe and I would love to see the Habs stuck with him.
Montreal will not be the next Canadian team to win the cup. Who is going to help you win it? Halak? Koivu? Samsonov? your terrible 5 on 5 play?
Habs’ fans are unhinged. They still possess the same arrogance and sense of entitlement of the real Habs fans in the 60s and 70s despite having a ****** team. The only problem is that the Habs haven’t been that good for almost two decades. If the Habs didn’t fall *** backwards into Patrick Roy they would never have won the cup in 86 and 93.
Enjoy the game tonight ladies
February 26th, 2007 at 6:16 pm
I didn’t know Patrick Roy scored goals for us. And what does it say about your laff team? They’ve won 1 CUP IN THE LAST 40 YEARS! PATHETIC!
When the laffs win as many cups as we have won, then you can come back on this site. We don’t want any losers(laff fans) here.
And FRANK, did they name you after a hotdog?
February 26th, 2007 at 6:16 pm
You seem to be obsessed with the Habs, their fans and this site. What does that say about you?
Go celebrate the Tucker signing on Dundas Street.
February 26th, 2007 at 6:41 pm
Hey hab fans: Did you hear what FRANK called our team in the 70’s ?
He called them ******! Can you belive this guy? I guess we were really ****** when we won 4 cups in a row. And of course, we were absolutely horrible when we lost only 8 GAMES, THE ENTIRE SEASON, in 1976!
Frank is so JEALOUS!
February 26th, 2007 at 7:11 pm
No, if you could read you would see that I called your team ****** since 1993. There is no arguing that the Habs were the opposite of ****** in the 70s.
Are fans of teams not allowed to visit other sites? I would welcome the debate but I guess when all you are going to hear is about how crappy your team is you wouldn’t want other fans visiting.
Plus you guys are a riot. Completely delusional, stuck in the past, completely fairweather, and hilarious unintelligible. This is the funniest site I have ever visited.
February 26th, 2007 at 7:14 pm
And HB, it’s on Yonge Street that Leaf fans celebrate playoff series victories not Dundas. If you are going to use a lame insult at least get it right.
I’d reciprocate but since the Habs have celebrated so few series victories in the past decade I wouldn’t know what street to mention.
Prediction:
Leafs 6
Habs 3
Everyone here calls for the trade of Aebischer, Koivu, Souray, Kovalev, etc. etc. because they are such great fans
February 26th, 2007 at 7:39 pm
Hooray, I know in the other post, that I complained about Gainey only chosing Josh Gorges, but hey we got rid of Rivet! HOORAY! But I guess we should be grateful we got someone of reasonable size.
February 26th, 2007 at 8:07 pm
Koivu is gonna be in the lineup. I don’t know where you guys got that trash about him not showing up. And don’t cite TSN. We know how much they like the Habs now, don’t we?
February 26th, 2007 at 8:12 pm
Frank get a life you pathetic homo.
Your visiting sites? Where’s your girlfriend?
or in Toronto should I say boyfriend since it’s more common.
Loser!
February 26th, 2007 at 8:21 pm
What? Players are refusing to play for the Habs? Since when? Better yet, who?
I bet not one French-Canadian in the NHL would refuse to play for the Habs.
BTW, I’m a habs fan stuck in Toronto. Leaf Nation is a disgrace. Everyone thinks that the mediocer Leafs are more important to talk about, the the Raptors who are having an AMAZING season. Don’t ever let anyone tell you that Toronto has the best hockey fans. Toronto has the worst fans. Case in point: the AHL Marlies can only attract 1000-3000 fans to their games in an arena that sits 9000. You’d think cheap prices and the future Leafs would attract people, but noooooooooo.
February 26th, 2007 at 9:33 pm
Well its 3-1 for the Habs starting the 2nd period
Where are the laff fans now?
February 26th, 2007 at 10:33 pm
Mtl is winning 5-2 right now going into the third, Kovalev and Radek Bonk are playin exceptional, and Ryder is also playing well. Souray had a bullet from the point, and for that reason i hope Gainey keeps him. Good luck Rivet. GO HABS GO!!!!
February 27th, 2007 at 12:36 am
Carbo is an idiot. Putting a jackass in net that can’t stop a bag of grass. The Habs should have won 5-0. All goals that the leafs got Abby the jackass should have stopped. Yeh Carbo he the most stupid coach I have ever seen. Halak has been good they need to go with him. If they keep put Abby the MORON in net kiss the playoffs good bye. They only won tonite by pure luck. Lucky there was not more shots on Stupid. Carbo wanted to go with expeirence. They should have put the stick boy in net. If Abby starts in net again I HOPE THE HABS GET THEIR ASSES KICKED BIG TIME. Carbo is useless a tits on a bull and Abby is not fit to put in net. They have to get rid of the Dumb & Dunber combo.
