Martin Biron traded to Philadelphia for a draft pick. Why? Is goaltending their problem?? Is Biron better than Nittymakkii or Esche? They all suck.

I hope the Habs pick up a goalie, maybe Curtis Joseph. David Aebischer is too shaky on every shot, rebounds going everywhere, he’s always on his knees, and most of all, the players have no confidence in him and that’s a killer.

Martin Biron’s a backup. David Aebischer’s a backup. Biron lost his job in Buffalo to Ryan Miller. Bottom line: Montreal doesn’t need Martin Biron’s type again. But the Sabres must be on crack, dumping Biron and picking up Ty Conklin to replace him, Conks is way more crappier than Biron as a backup. Buffalo better hope Miller stays healthy.

I know Montreal doesn’t have the greatest chance at Playoff success this season and that this team is just a tad better than mediocre (still better than Toronto though) but the nucleus for an entertaining, competitive team is here with a few tweaks for more character (i.e. more North American grit).

I believe Bob Gainey’s trying to alter the core of this team, ultimately to toughen it and bring more blood and guts grit to the face of this team. That’s why Sheldon Souray won’t be moved if Bob really feels that he will re-sign, Souray will be at the center of the new face of the team, he is a born leader and genuinely likes playing in this intense hockey mad city. If Bob felt Sheldon has every intention of walking away on July 1 then he most likely will be dealt.

I also believe the injection of youth is already happening and will continue. You can bet your bottom dollar, the likes of Niinimaa, Bonk and Aebsicher, if not moved today, will not be back. Andrei Markov and Mike Johnson will join Souray in re-signing. As for the constant Kovalev and Samsonov bashing, it’s futile, they’re here to stay so let’s hope they really start contributing.

So today’s Habs trades, if any, are not about being a buyer or a seller but rather about changing the face and character of the team.

    In Bob We Trust…

TSN AND SPORTSNET REPORTS PHOENIX COYOTES FORWARD GEORGES LARAQUE HAS WAIVED HIS NO-TRADE CLAUSE TO ACCEPT A TRADE TO THE PITTSBURGH PENGUINS FOR A PROSPECT AND AN 8TH ROUND PICK.

Is Laraque a big deal? Non-impact player, he’ll skate the 4th line 3 minutes a game to keep the opposition honest and of the Pens’ stars.

Gary Roberts joining Pittsburgh is big-impact, he and Recchi can maybe push this team to the Finals if, IF, Therrien doesn’t do something stupid (like open his big mouth) and Marc-Andre Fleury plays well consistently.

I’d have to say Pittsburgh is a top contender with Buffalo and New Jersey out of the East. I still don’t believe in Ottawa and all other teams that make it to the dance are all tad-better-than-mediocre teams (Habs included) but get on a run and anything can happen.

“Toronto trades Mats Sundin to Japan for teriyaki.”

    I like that trade.

Maybe B.G. will aquire a good goalie and a centre that can score. But in order to do that he has to get rid of a few to get money to get a couple of good players.

Maybe B.G. should give Fergieson a call to aquire Sundin and give the Leafs Abby (the leafs need a goalie) Kovalev, They need a coach so give them carbo.

Waht do ya think about that???????

Sorry, but Aebischer is MUCH better than Leighton, not only because of his SV% of 0.908. And by the way, Huet “the Great” has not really proven that he’s abetter goalie than Aebischer yet, a good spring ‘06 doesn’t make up for the fact that Huet was average all his career up to now. So stop the Aebi bashing, please.

Leighton and Abby will probably compete against each other to see who can let the worst floater shots in….of course we needed someone like Biron. Halak is gonna eventually get hurt cause our defense don’t protect our goalies….

Anybody here like to see Paul Mara on our defence? He’s good (7th overall pick) and should connect somewhere along the way after stints in Tampa Bay, Phoenix and now Boston sick of him.

Looks like the good old problem that no one wants to play in Montreal is still existing…

    Thanks Smiler:

What exactly is wrong with Danis? That might explain the acquisition of Leighton.

Anyways, the trade deadline is not yet over. Gainey is taking a bit of a risk by sitting on the fence right now. Neither building for the future or the present. However, let’s be patient before passing judgement.

Just a gut feeling… the longer time goes on, the more I think Bob’s working on something big on a few fronts in case of deals on the table falling through. Every GM involved is on a hot seat today and it becomes a game of chicken as the deadline nears as they wait for the better deal.
Bob’s history in Montreal so far has been that he isn’t afraid to make a big move (Kovalev, Theodore) and this season’s version of the Habs is ripe for an internal facelift so we should all stay tuned and if he doesn’t get it done today, remember there’s two dance partners in this and it’s not Bob’s fault if his trading partner opts out at the last minute. Also, groundwork is being laid for an offseason move (Tampa Bay wouldn’t trade Lecavalier now but at the Entry Draft, it’s a whole different scenario!)

    In Bob We Trust…

HALAK back between the pipes in N.Y. tonite. I hope our D-Men will help him out tonite. If he gets help then I feel that we have a great chance to win. Halak has nothing to loose. But everything to gain. He is up from the minors to help the Habs win some games. BUT I bet that he did not know that was to become the Habs #1 goaltender and try to fill some pretty big shoes………Lets all wish him all the best tonite shall we.

Bob Gainey knows this team isn’t going anywhere this year so why would he give up anything that would affect the future to finish in 8th place?

    Gimme a break.

I’m just dissapointed he hasn’t been a major seller. Welcome to five more consecutive seasons of 8th place finishes cause this team can’t win with this veteran corps.

And enjoy the 17 reamaining games with Souray in the line-up. Cause when Montreal dosen’t make the playoffs or get swept in the first round, he’s gone and the Habs will have a major hole on their backend that will not be filled cause Gainey didn’t get anything back for him.

Unless they announce re-signing of Souray this is a huge loss.
