The Boston 3

The Canadiens take on Boston tonight, the first of three remaining games against the Bruins this year.

Needless to say, the Canadiens playoff chances rest on their ability to defeat teams like the Bruins.

Three games remain against Boston and one against the Capitals. The rest are against teams battling for a spot, or Ottawa and Buffalo who are never easy.

Traditionally at this time of year the Habs have done well against the Bruins. The key perhaps is a win tonight to really damage the hopes of the Bruins who would then fall 7 points behind the Canadiens. A gap that is virtually impossible to overcome this late on.

A Bruins team with damaged confidence knowing they are out of the race, might then be easier to then beat in the remaining games. That’s purely speculation but after watching the Canadiens confidence collapse this season - we’re familiar with what can happen.

Jaroslav Halak is the man once again. The Candiens for the first time in many many games, had a solid goaltending performance and took that crucial extra point against the Leafs.

A no-brainer to go with him again. Halak rebounded well after getting his first NHL beating in Atlanta not long ago, maybe he can keep it up for the remainder of the year.

If Halak outplays Thomas, the Habs have a good chance of putting the Bruins to bed for good with a win tonight.

Yes. Put them into hibernating with their little Teddy Bears.

    But seriously.

The Habs need help from teams like Ottawa, Buffalo, Pittsburg to beat the teams that we are battling for the last playoff spot. Pitts. did not help us last night.

It does not look good. BUT wee will see.

Hate to beat a dead horse here, but what do we think about playing Samsonov tonight? Despite his general ostracization, his rare gleams of talent of late seem to have come while playing his old team. And, given the fact that he’s been scratched so long, he may actually come back with some conviction. But, knowing the results of the disasterous habit that the coaching staff seems to have of mixing the lines up when the habs are actually winning, we might just want to hold on to what we have. I agree that the Higgins/Kostistyn/Plecanec line looks dangerous. Either way, tonight might just turn out to be a solid goaltender’s duel. In which case: In Halak we trust.

    Don’t even think about that.

Kovalev & Samsonov should not play ever again for Montreal.

Carbo has to stick with the same game plan as last Sat. when they beat the Laffs. And Damnit D-men, “DON’T SCREEN HALAK”. Let him see the puck. If you are going to get in front of him block the Damn shot, if not get the hell out of the way…………..

    The Boston Bruins:

My last trip to the Forum was a Saturday night in March ‘96 against the Bruins (the Forum closed about 10 days later vs. Dallas)… Boston won 2-1 but there were, as usual, a lot of Bruin fans up from New England that night and my buddy and I ended partying in the local watering holes with some of them til the wee hours (as is the Montreal way). They were pretty cool about the rivalry and had nothing but respect for the Habs as foes and I pretty much feel the same way: I hate the Bruins but at least I respect them where I hate the Leafs and have no respect for any of their moronic obnoxious know-nothing fans.

Samsonov? Carbo wouldn’t, would he? Aebischer? Carbo wouldn’t, would he? I don’t care who plays where for the Canadiens as long as they play hard and ******* WIN baby! Habs 4, Bruins 3

I’ve had it with those who think Samsonov has been treated unfairly, or deserves another chance. We are all entitled to our own opinions and all, but the line should be drawn somewhere. Samsonov is done here, he quit on the team before he even griped about his ice-time the frist time, last calendar year. Everything he has done since has been to get the team to buy him out.

Yeah, I said it, have been saying it, and will continue to say it, whether or not anyone else agrees. Scorn me if you like, I do not care. Samsonov quit on the team and has been angling to get bought out for a while now. That piece of **** should be down in the minors, getting used to his new home. Under NO circumstances should the team buy this guy out. NONE!

The way I see it, the demotion will only make his deplorable attitude worse. Fine, I don’t care, cause if it were up to me, he’ll never wear a habs jersey that doesn’t have a Bulldog on it, EVER AGAIN. No one will take him in a trade at his salary, and even recallable waiver method will still see the habs pay half his freight. Gilette has deep pockets: let the lazy, heartless cancer ride some buses for a while. If he turns his cancerous **** on the farm team, I say loan him to some ECHL bottom feeder for a year.

    Play Samsonov? They’d better not.

Just read the online gazette articles (I’m running behind sked today,) and Radek Bonk says he has lost 5 or 6 pounds battling the flu. Apparently, chicken Boullion was all he could keep down…And Halak is starting tonight, which is far better than David “Swiss Cheese” Aebisieve and Mike “Revolving Door” Leighton. Rumour has it that Melanson will be suited up tonight, while Abisieve and luggage Leighton will be playing with a beachball in the parking lot…

These were the projected lines for tonight according to the practice line ups - ~Gazette, TSN

Interesting move putting Begin on the Top line… maybe he can get in front of the net and cause some disturbance… Dandy back to D thought he was more productive on Offense (or at least less destructive than his defense).. Kovy playing with the kids on 3rd line. we’ll see how things progress during the tonights game!

nigelski…I’m with you buddy. If you buy Samsonov out, he’ll find another team and will then be making WAY too much money with his new contract + the buyout. Put him in the minors, that’s where he belongs.

Our discussions about Samsanov should end. There’s no need to talk about him anymore. We all hate his attitude and I think we all agree that he belongs with the Bulldogs next season. He needs to be fed a dose of reality.

I love how Halak played Saturday night against the Leafs. How confident did he look, eh?

Never mind Sammy, I am sure he’ll contribute if he decides to actually shoot the puck instead of hogging it to show he’s the world’s best stick handler, the only problem is he doesn’t have size enough to keep the damn puck…so much of being a great stickhandler…

The problem is: Dandenault and Bouillon, I can’t say it enough. They are the one two knockout punch to the sad forward line, just pick em: Koivu, Johnson, or hey Kovalev and Ryder, any combination, and Dandenault and Bouillon will make sure the Bruins get quality shots on Halak, heck they’ll go out of their way to trip Halak, screen him, no I am not talking about the Bruins, I am talking about the great Anti-Habs, Dandenault and Bouillon….!!!!

Yeah, I agree with the comments above about having respect for the Bruins and hatred also BUT I always respected the Boston Bruins as a franchise and I actually feel sorry for their fans with the way the ownership puts money and profits over and above icing a competitive team. The Toronto Maple Laffs on the other hand, have conspired and cajoled throughout the NHL’s history to hurt the Habs at every opportunity from Conn Smythe meddling in League affairs with respect to the Rocket Richard suspension in 1955 to the complete control of the media in this country that never has anything good to say about the Canadiens.

I WILL NEVER HAVE ANY RESPECT FOR A FRANCHISE FROM TORONTO.

In a way, this is like watching the ebbing waters on a dam just before the flood!

The Sabres have always been a tough nut to crack! They are way down the road, just far enough down where Montreal if it plays its cards right could snatch a spot only to have Buffalo make Montreal lose it! That is how close the race is….unless Gainey plans by bringing up the Sabre killers Grabby and Milroy, we are doomed to watch hopelessly as they knock all of our stars down in successive order, beginning with Welcome Mat Johnson, who has spent more time on the ice crawling as he has done skating…honestly, and he gets paid over a million for that! and then little Koivu, and then checking the **** outta Kovalev, and Markov, and Ninnima, and then pushing over the wallflowers Dandy and Bouilly….and finally making Sheldon knock our own goalie over in disgust! I amazed at the skill the Sabres have in turning the Habs inside out! That is unless we plan by bringing up some rookies to kill the Sabres! And secure a playoff spot!

Honestly, what Gainey saw in him, who knows, maybe its all part of some NHLPA payola scheme, where players give the GM a kickback as long as they get a million dollar salary, that would place Johnson as the biggest payola suspect…how else does this explain the really ****** roster we presently have?

I got center ice, and man are these Boston commentators rough…Just sais what a great chance chistov had–it would have been, had the net been 20 feet off the ice surface. just got ripped off a too many men penalty, after the Boston player getting off the bench touched the puck, with 5 other guys out there. GRR

I always have wondered why teams don’t lay a bead on the line changes, you know, throw the puck @ the extra guy before he can stop himself from touching it, and garner a pile of penalties that way. A well disciplined team could feast on those kind of mistakes.

TB won in overtime, so habs, leafs, and Carolina all tied for 8th place. Too bad leafs won, and that TB couldn’t have won in regulation. I think what will ultimately happen, is that the teams solidified in the playoffs, aren’t playing as hard as the teams on the cusp. If we don’t gain ground(and we haven’t in 3 nites), then we’ll just run out of games. Remember, NYI have 2 GAMES IN HAND! LEAFS STILL HAVE 1 GAME IN HAND.
Here’s the problem with the habs: They totally outplayed the bruins, yet have to hang on for dear life, because the habs CAN’T SCORE! Kovalev missed a wide open net, and a breakaway;(he’s totally useless)! I hope we get rid of him, BADLY! Higgins had a breakaway and couldn’t score. We had so many chances to put this game away and couldn’t! And despite being outplayed, the Bruins were just 1 shot away from wining the game. In the 3rd period again,(like Saturday against the leafs) the habs went into a defensive style and stopped skating. You can’t play this style and expect to win on a continuous basis. Good teams will kill you. If we don’t score more on Thursday, we will lose.
I expect leafs and NYI to keep on winning, which leaves habs out in the cold in 11th place. Say bye bye to the playoffs!

Islanders lost but the ****** leafs won, habs are tied at the 8th spot along side the ****** leafs and the Hurricanes. No way the leafs are going to make it, the rest of their games are up against tough teams, so the battle is basically going to be between Carolina and the habs.

    HABS WILL MAKE IT!!!

If Montreal keeps pace like it is going now and the season ends this way then they are in the playoffs. Montreal has more wins than the other 3 teams.

Did Kovalev need a few more chances to score or what??? Not complaining, just noticed that he could’ve had 2 hatricks. BIG WIN boys, way to go, carry that momentum into Boston and you should have no problem picking up another two points. GO HABS GO!!!!!!!!

We didn’t crush their spirits going into next game thursday, so let’s hope by not whippin em 7-0 like on the weekend, that they are complacent easy victims come next one. Halak looks like his benching and not dressing as backup for a few games really lit a fire under him. He’s playing great. Too bad this tactic didn’t work with other guys who sat in the pressbox.( they know who they are…)It sucks that the leafs won, but then, it always sucks when the leafs win. I almost hope it comes down to that last game, so we can snuff their hopes again this year. Still, Buffalo could do us a favor by sweepin them in two games this week, cause jersey couldn’t get the job done.

Also, Carolina plays washington, and San jose, and they have to lose both games too. What kinda sucks right now is that all the teams we are chasing/right there with, seem to win the same nights as we do, and luckily lose the same nights as well. We need to put together a streak that has us winning while thet are all losing. Halak is the go-to guy for now, the shutout has surely cemented abby’s *** to the bench–which is a good thing.

    Go habs!

With the goal posts, open nets they missed and the outstanding saves by Thomas the score could have eassly been 8-0.

We got the sut out win. That is all that matters.

Halak seems like a good down to earth Kid.

    GO HALAK, GO HABS.

Al we have to do is keep the pace that we going. We will be ok.

Te D-Men got out of Halak’s way and he made the saves. He made some good saves.

I’ve been reading about “all the hopefull fans” on getting into the playoffs on this blog. Look guys, I have been a fan for 35 yrs now, this team is best off NOT making the playoffs. All of the fans on TV are clinching to something that is a joke. Its like not pulling the plug on a loved one just for the sake of not wanting them to die. “Just get in, just get in” COME ON, what is that!

This is not the Edmonton Oilers of last year. 7th or 8th vs the 1st & 2nd place teams in the Conference….Sabres & Devils…they can’t beat those teams in a 7 game series…they will get inialated.

They do not have the talent to be there, you guys know that! You really do. Goaltending is atrosious, Abby and Halak are not going to be playoff saviours like Penny, Roy and Sevigny or Herron of the past. They are average…at best.

So if Montreal slots in at 8th spot come the seasons end….be prepared for a Sabres *** KICKING like you’ve never seen before.

Remember the 82 playoffs, Montreal plays Buffale on the 1st round, 3 of 5 then, Buffalo beat us 3-0, and shut us out in 2 of those contests….and we had a far better team then. Montreal does not want to meet Buffalo in the 1st round. Its kinda like not wanting to play Jersey in the 1st round either, they will dismantle us even worse…4-0, and yes, you all know I’m right! Montreal record againt Jersey is enuff to make me vomit (2 wins in the last 40 meetings!) You want domination….there you have it.

So, in closing, no, Montreal is best off not making it. I’de rather they not make it than go through the embarsement of a 1st round kiddy circus.

    Fan4066:

You said, ” Abby and Halak are not going to be playoff saviours like Penny, Roy and Sevigny or Herron of the past”.

Abby no. But Halak maybe. What in the hell did Penny, Herron and Sevigny do? How many cups did they bring home?

You said, “Remember the 82 playoffs, Montreal plays Buffale on the 1st round, 3 of 5 then, Buffalo beat us 3-0, and shut us out in 2 of those contestsThey do not have the talent to be there, you guys know that! You really do”.

That was then. This is now. Look what Monreal did to first place Boston. Upsat them did we not. The playoffs are a whole differnt season my friend.

We have seen upsets before and we will see them again.

The 93 Habs had no better tean than we have now. There were no superstars on that team.

I disagree with fan4066….for a number of reasons, but in a way he is right.

The veterans don’t have it anymore. The game against Boston showed the vets are good at hitting goal posts…and falling down. I think Johnson and Kovalev had a beer bet going on as to who would fall down the most during the game….one more game with Johnson flat on his butt!

But on the plus side, If we had nothing but largely rookies, bring up Chipchura, Grabby, Milroy, D’Agostini, Locke, the core of the rookies that gave us such a spark at the beginning of the season and prompted many in the media to say, is Montreal finally a cup contender again?

Well, if we rely on Dandy, Bouilly, Johnson, Ninnima, Samsonov and Koivu and worst of all Kovalev, we are in for a first round kiddy circus of being embarrased.

But if we bring up the rookies we could end up with an exciting finish, like the exciting start we had….my two cents.

Your totally missing my point here. These tenders at least got us deep into the playoffs, and created some seroius damage in the process. No, Penny did not win a cup….I’m not stupid,I lived that playoff year, and watched Penny stand on his head, and also watch the Habs put the Islanders down 2-0 in the conference finals that year. The others solid tenders in the playoffs as well. Abby and Halak are not going to get us anywhere….unless you know something I don’t about them! Halak is 21, pretty young, granted, but just not the good to “blow anybody away”

As far as the 93 team not having a better team than we have now…..they had heart, heart, heart…this team has non…Jacques Demers said that himself. That’s why the 93 team wan the Stanley Cup. Before Christmas, they were playing like the 93 team…..I lived, ate and slept that season as well….what more do you want to know??

How old was Roy when he played his first NHL game? What team was it against?

Why is Halak not the “blow anybody away Goalie? So he is young. Roy was great. Ken Dryden he was not. I’ve seen nights when Roy would not stop a beach ball.

Don’t be too quick to jump on Halak………………

Fan4066, you said this “Montreal is best off not making it. I’de rather they not make it than go through the embarsement of a 1st round kiddy circus”.

So what if Montreal had finnished this season with 82 wins & no losses for 164 points And got their asses kicked 4 straight in the first round buy a ****** team that just barely made the playoffs by 7 to 8 goal shut-outs?

What then?????????? It does not matter if you just make the playoffs or finnish 1st over all. It is a new season & anything can happen……..

Roy was 20, a year younger…February 23, 1985 he replaced starter Doug Soetaert in a game againt, against the Jets. He started the 3rd period. They beat the jets 6-4. Dryden was just a plain phenominon.

just to add to the 93 team…not as good? How about Muller, Bellows, Roy,
Damphousse, Schneider,Keane,Dionne,Carbonneau,Desjardins,Brunet, Daigneault, your right… not as good as this Habs team for sure…..geees!

I think your losing it…..the 76-77 team was as close as to perfect as it will ever get 62-8-12- 132. They went 12-2 in the playoofs that year only losing to the Islanders. If your that good that does not happen.

New season or not, Montreal will be hard pressed to beat Buffalo or Jersey…thats the bottom line

Absolutely ridiculous slam against the ‘93 team. They were totally underrated and did have a great line-up. How any hab fan can compare this team to the ‘93 team is unthinkable.

In 1993, we had 4, 30 goal scorers! On our current team, we have but 2, 20 goal scorers! And 1 of those is a defenceman! The team in 1993, was much better, and far more talented, by a long shot! There is no comparison!
Having said that, there is a strong probability that Huet will be back by next week, and that will certainly bolster our goalie situation. Don’t worry. Abbyshit has played his last game for the habs, ever!
But instead of worrying about what will happen in the 1st round of the playoffs, we need to make the playoffs first, and that won’t be an easy task!
So all you people who are now critical of their playoff chances, who cares. We all know this team won’t go far in the playoffs, but we don’t care. We just want to be able to say we made the playoffs. Otherwise, it’s going to be an extra long summer. Because the habs screwed up so many games, by not showing up,it would be a really bitter pill to swallow if we don’t make it into the playoffs. December 1st, everything was rosy, and we were firmly deposited in 4th place, and we were an absolute shoe in for the playoffs. Let’s not take away that dream. No matter what happens, we are in a rebuilding mode, and the useless deadwood(Kovalev, Samsonov, Bonk, Johnson, Ninnimaa, Dandenault, Murray, Downey, Abbyshit) will have to be removed.
I expect much better efforts next year and hope more players from Hamilton to be on this team. We will get better, because we can’t be any worse!
And BTW, Kovalev should NOT be playing now! He only hurts the team! If the net was the size of a football field, he still would miss! I’d rather see Milroy or Grabovski in his place!
