Habs and Sens: 5 games left

  • Written by Habs BlogHabs Blog 94 Comments94 Comments Comments

The Canadiens travel down the road to play in Ottawa tonight. A place that hasn’t been so friendly to them as of late.

The big question is, how long can the Canadiens keep winning? With 5 consecutive wins, they are right in the thick of the race and even a 6th place finish is a possibility.

On the other hand, an 11th place finish is not too far fetched either.

How far can they push their current streak? 6 wins? 7 wins? More? You have to believe the Canadiens are aware of their situation, and will be ready to compete. The same way they have in their past five games.

This weekend will be tough one with Buffalo following tomorrow night in Montreal. A split this weekend and 2/4 points would probably be considered a good weekend.

But dealing the Senators and Sabres both a loss, would be pretty inspiring and confidence boosting heading into the post season.

Beat them both. This will be like a playoff game tonight and we all know how Ottawa fairs in the playoffs. As for Buffalo, we always compete well agianst them even when Abby is lettin gin every second shot. 2 for 2.

The Habs are on fire! Halak is hot! Koivu and Kovalev are playing well. The rookies are skating and hitting. The Canadiens currently have more to play for than either the Sens and the Sabres. I will guess the Habs get at least 3 points in the next two games just as long as Dawg doesn’t shave and/or bathe.

I should get game ticket behind the Ottawa net tonight. For two periods he will not see a thing. His eyes would be watering too much from da smell.

Ummmm. Smell of defeat or smell of Sick Rotten Carcass…

Yes, we have to come out with guns a blazing this weekend. When we take two games this weekend. It will surely frighten the **** out of the teams ahead of us……..GOG HABS GO………COME ON BOY’S.

I can see tonight’s events unfolding as follows:

    - The Habs beat the Sens in overtime.
    - Carolina, with a last delusional gasp that they can make the top eight, will defeat Tampa in regulation.
    - The Isles fall to Buffalo, and in doing so, eliminate themselves from the playoff picture entirely.

Or at least that was what I saw in a dream last night.

These next two games will be huge and Montreal has to be ready to compete in both of them. The Habs have to treat these games as if they are playoff games and they have to come out with some fire and intensity. If the Canadiens can somehow win in Ottawa tonight, a place that has not been too friendly to them as of late, then that would be good for their confidence going into the game tomorrow against the Sabres. They have been playing well as of late so hopefully that can transfer over to the game tonight and tomorrow where they play the same way they have been playing lately. I hope the Canadiens can win both of the games but even a split and 2 or 3 out of a possible 4 points would be good as well. Go Habs Go!!

Got my personalized jersey back from the cleaners today, and am on my way to the bar later to ruffle some leaf feathers. I’d do it to a sens fan or three, excepting the fact that I don’t know any. So I’ll just have to beat up on the leaf fans. None of them have my superior knowledge of all things NHL, so it’ll be like taking candy from a baby. That said, I’m recording the game to watch when I get home, and I will thus try to avoid seeing the score.

Yep, a tough weekend for the habs, but I got faith, mostly. My biggest worry is Carbo annointing Halak for the rest of the season. Not because Halak is bad or such. It’s just that every time Carbo names a #1 goalie lately, the guy gets shelled his next game. Just before Halak got these 5 in a row, he said Abbysieve was #1. Thank god he never stuck to his guns on THAT one…

Montreal has came to far to quit now. The playoffs are just a stones throw away. We can see it and smell it. We can almost touch it. It is so close. We have to jump over a few more hurdles to get there.

Pull out all the stops boys. Don’t stop that train until be have arrived at “Playoff Station”.

This train that we are on the is the non-stop express to the playoffs…

I agree that a split this weekend would be a success. Two or three points will probably be enough for the Habs to hold their place in eighth. But I’d rather they pull ahead enough to assure that their last game in Toronto isn’t a ‘do or die’ game. I don’t have a great feeling about that one. The Leafs are finding ways to win or earn points when they need to.

Quite honestly, I wouldn’t care of their last game was against the Flyers - they shouldn’t leave anything to chance. Secure that playoff spot now, and leave that final game as being little more than a playoff tune-up, and possibly a battle for positioning.

There is absolutely NO CHECKING BY THE HABS! They are letting Ottawa come out, untouched? IS THIS THE TYPE OF PRACTICES CARBO HAS BEEN RUNNING ALL WEEK?
CARBO should have taken a timeout, when we were only 1 goal down.
    His inexperience is showing!

Judging by what Duff has expressed here, I’d say he’s about fourteen years old. And if he’s not, then he should be ashamed of himself.

Good start, Habs. You’ve had plenty of rest. You knew the importance of these back-to-back games. So what’s your excuse for this poor start? Maddening.

They can’t go thinking that they can get in the habit of spotting two goal leads and then come back and win all the time now. After all, Ottawa is slightly better than the Rangers. They won’t win anything again this season - the big boys in the East will take care of them - but they are a slightly better team.

    So, let’s go Habs.

That’s the trademark of this year’s team! And you know who’s fault that is?
CARBO! For not preparing or motivating his team!
Like I keep on saying, “THERE IS SOMETHING VERY WRONG INTERNALLY WITH THE HABS”!
I have never seen , over the course of a complete season, a habs team to NOT SHOW UP FOR SO MANY GAMES! Right now, they look like the same team from January and February. Nothing has changed! If they would only skate and check, and play with heart, they could have beaten Ottawa, but instead they prefer to take the lazy and selfish way out!

The Habs blew a 5 on 3 & a 4 minute straight powerplay. They will not come back a win this game that is a 100% given. It is not to be.

Well it was to good to be true to win 6 in a row and show everyone that we mean bussiness.

It was fun while it lasted. I do not have much hope for the game Saturday night. Montreal will probally loose 3 in a row now. It is very dishearting. They should have came out tonight on fire. But like every 1st period they came out with lead in thier pants.

Well tonight is not a total loss. I had a nice refreshing shower. I am clean, I smell good, I feel good. My wife came back and I got my job back.

No, McCabe is the worst defensemen in the league. But that’s of minor importance.

What’s of greater importance is that both are defensemen for the two teams that will very likely be battling it out for the eighth and final playoff spot. With the Canes and Isles all but dead, it appears that Toronto is the team that stands between the Habs and a post season, and it also appears that the Leafs are the far more consistent team right now.

That final game in Toronto is going to be bigger than I had hoped it would be. ****.

I have every right to make fun of Leafs fans, regardless of whether their team is better than ours this season. They are some of the most pretentious fans I’ve come across, and unjustifiably so considering the 40-year draught and overpriced seats. Leas fans = hopelessly loyal suckers, as far as I’m concerned.

As to the Habs, I actually stated that their season was over more than two weeks ago. So the recent surge has been nothing short of a pleasant surprise. If they fall short, then they accomplish what I had expected - no surprises. If they prove everyone wrong and get the eighth spot, then I’m thrilled.

here’s the probable finish; NYR-8th place, TB-7th place, TORONTO-8th place!
HABS IN THE TRASH WHERE THEY BELONG! (especially their Dmen)!
How can a team win without a defence, and without effort, heart and desire?
We have NONE OF THOSE INGREDIENTS! Gainey has his work cut out for him!
Like I always say, : ” If you put in the effort, play 60 minutes, and give 100% effort,” then I can take the loss. But when there’s NO EFFORT, NO HEART, NO DESIRE! That really really upsets me.
KOVALEV said:” I’m going to take this team on my back to win”! KOVALEV was INVISIBLE TONIGHT! Have you noticed, that when Kovalev is a no show(most of the year), then we lose. That proves my point, that KOVALEV IS TRULY A CANCER ON THIS TEAM! He needs to go, and so does Koivu,(too small and doesn’t score enough). This team is mediocre at best.
TORONTO IS MUCH BETTER THAN US AND SHOWS UP FOR EVERY GAME, AND PLAYS WITH HEART! I have to give them alot of credit. We shouldn’t make fun of them, because they’re the team who will make the playoffs, NOT US!

So, with the Leafs and Rangers both taking 8th spot, does that mean that 6th will be open for the Habs? Is 6th the trash spot? ;-)

Sorry, I meant NYR will take 6th spot!
We get the bobby prize, for the worst defensive team, and the most HEARTLESS team! We’ll finish in 10th place!

Once again, the vets let us down. Koivu didn’t complete half of his passes, and he coughed up the puck for one of the goals that we blamed Souray for. Come to think of it, Koivu set up at least 10 of Ottawa’s shots tonite.

Dandenault played his usual self, the man hasn’t completed a pass in a game in what, well since the juniors I bet, I’m talking triple A. Honestly, how he got on the team and stayed on, is a mystery.

Johnson was pathetic, Koivu was pummeled to death and Ryder let us down with his hooks, guess where he learned that from? Montreal was outmuscled, outshot.

Practically everyone on the team played the old, “let me set up the shot for you” in Montreal’s zone, they were just pathetic they couldn’t clear the puck for luck of trying, in fact how many NHL games do you see a one on four end up in a goal? That is just pathetic!

Dandenault and Bouillon are just plain ****! Streit and Markov couldn’t finish a pass either. In fact the habs were horrible, except for Lapierre’s passes and Kostysn….even Kovalev couldn’t make a decent pass tonite!

At this rate Montreal will play itself out of a playoff spot. To finish it off, Carbo will rely on Murray and Huet, and play Dandenault and Bouillon all night long, only to see us outscored one more time against Buffalo!

When Gainey could bring up some muscle from Hamilton, what does he do? Nothing! The absent Helicopter Chartering GM, hey Bob time to get down to earth and actually do a GM job, get rid of Dandenault and Bouillon, at least try Huet in Hamilton first before you sink the habs one more time you vulture!

That’s it! that’s enough. No more blaming Gainey for not having enough call ups. Time to educate you on league rules.

The Habs have a set roster at the beginning of the year, After the trade deadline, there is a maximum of call-ups you can have with no injury’s. Guess what, the Habs are right up against that limit! Even if they bench Dandenault, Boullion, Kovy, Koivu and every other player you hate, they still can’t call up any of those players cause there are no injury’s!

Holy ****, find out the rules of the league holy ****!

And if the Habs lose two more games it’s time to start looking forward to the draft in Columbus.

Yes we should be blaming Gainey for not having enough call ups. Other teams bend the rules like crazy. Supposedly this was supposed to be a new NHL, yet you still have just as much violence, just as many other teams calling up their reserves injury or not. Stop giving Gainey all the friggen breaks like you know the rule book inside out because you don’t! What, because Shanahan didn’t like the plush leather in the chopper, it was the wrong color we can’t fault Gainey for that? More like, we have a GM who courts his players not with promises of ice time, advancement, he courts them with: a helicopter ride, a suburb potential home location, heck even TIVO sets, all the wrong friggen stuff!

No wonder we are where we are. Enough of this “read the rule book” and next let’s hear you say, LeJournal kidnapped Gainey in Nashville and that is why we didn’t get a superstar, right after the tax man scared away the stars and the Bill 101 secret police in cahoots with the anglo bigots of Montreal scared off the talent! Geezuz Bejesus honestly listen to yourselves!

The only reason why we don’t have the rookies in Montreal is because Gainey doesn’t want to look like the fool he is for signing crappy players like Johnson, Ninnima, Dandenault and Bouillon!

I didn’t see the game but if there was no effort and back to the useless Jeckyl and Hyde team…then there is nothing anyone can say or do. If they had the chances and didn’t finish off plays or better yet couldn’t set each other up then a loss is inevitable. Ottawa has the fire power to put the other team down. The only way to combat that is to score on your chances and to hit and take players out and basically grind out a win. By the looks of things this is what might be required against the Leafs.

As for all the talk of not signing players etc…where who else should Gainey of signed. The rookies…need time and yes if they are playing like **** then a benching would show there is a misguided twit on the bench and we need to straighten them out. However, when they are all playing like ****, it’s hard to find the right spark plug. It’s up to the players to go out and hit, not get penalties but one play at a time to win each hit each play or at least take out the player.

Anyways, losing these two games will hurt if the other contending teams tie/win. They made it hard on themselves but that’s what we fans have to go with. I just wish they continue to give 60 minutes of effort for the remaining games.

As far as Dandenault and Bouillon are concerned maybe it’s time to mix-up the defensive pairings. Try generating something!! Let’s go, come on! Go Habs Go!

That’s not precisely true, Habs#1 (post 71). There is no limit to call ups, but there is a cap on roster sizes. One of the reasons that we are unable to call anyone up right now is Gainey’s inexplicable decision not to send Samsonov down. If he’s down there, we can call up another guy. The roster sizes are increased after the trade deadline, and much of the lack of manouvering is due to limited cap space.

Samsonov should be in the minors, not the pressbox. That’s where he should be next season as well. I’m on record as saying he shouldn’t be bought out, and I stick to that. If Lamorillo can bury heartless former stars in Malakov and Mogilny, surely Gilette with his deep pockets can afford to bury Samsonov. Even one more player would be beneficial, as an injection of some youthful enthusiasm and energy could only help our cause; and Samsonov isn’t doing anyone any good right now, himself included.

What sickens me is the sure knowledge that he will be bought out, regardless…

I haven’t been a Carbo basher for most of the year, though I’ve had my moments where his line juggling has had me pulling out what’s left of my hair (not much). That said, I’m finding it more and more difficult to blame the players for the poor starts that seem to occur EVERY GAME. I don’t know if it is this defensive style they are playing, or if it is a lack of proper preparation/motivation. The players are responsible for their own play, true, but this kind of lackadaisical play happens virtually every game, and it seems as though there is never an effort until the 2nd or 3rd period(s).

If these were isolated occurences, I’d blame certain players. Since it occurs every game, I think the coaching staff is to blame. Some changes have to be made to ensure that a game wide effort in both ends of the ice is achieved, every night. Whether this means tinkering with the system, or wholesale changes, I can’t say. I only know that if we’d played the entire game like the 3rd period, we would have won.

It’s also wearying to hear Carbo complaining about this all the time. Stop crying about it and implement some changes Guy. Before it’s tee-time.

    Typical.
The Habs lose one game and you all are screaming and whining about every player. Give your heads a shake, you idiots act like the Canadiens should win 82 games a season.
Granted, every game’s a must win now but geez, cut the team some slack, they’ll rebound big tonight vs. Buffalo. Besides, do any of you think Toronto, Carolina or the Isles are gonna go undefeated here on in??? GET REAL and QUIT WHINING.

Both side’s are right, but to be honest, Habs fans HAVE BEEN arguing for years now because of all the poor end results. This kind of thing rarely happens to Base ball storied N.Y. Yankees and is not acceptable in Montreal where Hockey and Christ are at a tie for pasion estee’!And yes ,with bad results ,management and coaches are to blame, their the one’s that throw the team together ,period !So, there is no excuses when the proof is in the pudding, there’s only room for big time improvement. The HABS SHOULD BE NEER THE FINNALS EVER YEAR ,WITH A GREAT SHOWING DURING THE SEASON AND YES,IT IS THE HABS GOD GIVEN RIGHT!!! Any way, lets just hope we eat buffalo tonite,we’ll see ? Go Habs

We’re not upset because they lost last night; we’re upset because of THE WAY THEY LOST-BY NOT SHOWING UP, AND NO EFFORT! Don’t you guys get it?
How can we support a team that doesn’t try, and doesn’t give a damn?
If they give 100% effort, and still lose, then it’s because we just weren’t good enough. but THERE ARE NO EXCUSES FOR LACK OF EFFORT IN SUCH AN IMPORTANT GAME! I think the Montreal Canadiens should change their name to the
Montreal NOSHOWS. That fits their style of play!
You can’t constantly be invisible in the 1st period, and expect to win. Every damn game, they’re behind 2-0, by the end of the 1st period. It’s been that way for most of the season. We’re sick and tired of it. And can someone tell me, when the habs actually bombed a team during the season, ie. 6-0?
Try never! That’s the problem. They’re always content to just get by.
And those recent wins we’re against sub par teams, ie. Boston, Washington, NYR.
So guys, the truth is, we’re not a good team, and certainly not in the same echilon as teams like NJ, Ottawa,Pittsburgh…
I don’t see us getting in, because the habs just DON’T WANT IT BAD ENOUGH!
Otherwise THEY WOULD PUT IN EFFORT FOR 60 MINUTES!
THis team is NOT CAPABLE OF PLAYING 60 MINUTES, AND THEY DON”T GIVE A DAMN!
So why should we care, if they don’t?
