The Habs play the Sabres tonight at the Bell Center in another crucial game.
8 possible points left up for grabs for the Canadiens.
Finshing anywhere from 6th-11th is possible, every point more important than the last.

Tonight will be their toughest challenge of the remaining four, obviously. If they come out with a determination to win, match the Sabres speed and skill, and get solid goaltending, they’ll prevail. Anything short of that might put them in big trouble in a hurry.

Lately the Habs have started like an old engine in the throes of winter. No matter how well they match up against the Sabres (and they do), giving up two early goals would seal their fate. The same goes for too many penalties.

I’m looking for an inspired start leading to a tie game going into the third. Then get ready for some nail-biting action. I predict an OT loss tonight, but crossing my fingers for an all-out win. With the game at home, hopefully my prediction will prove to be pessimistic!

    GO HABS GO!!!!!!

If they start the game like they have been, this game is already over. Buffalo can roll four fast lines that can all hurt you. It would be nice to see a team wide 60 minute effort tonight, but there doesn’t seem to be much reason to hope for that, given their track record. They seem to not even try until the first is over. If they play that way tonight…

I also really hope that Abeischer isn’t thrown in there tonight, or it won’t matter how we play. That sieve will have a hard time earning a contract this off season, won’t he?

Pittsburgh should smoke the leafs tonight. They’ve whupped ‘em a couple of times this year, and Crosby almost seems to have a hate on for the leafs. Crosby and co., on a national stage, should give us some much needed standings relief. So it’s up to you, guys. Win, and it’ll go a long way in our playoff hunt, cause the leafs aren’t likely to.

The Habs have to get these points as the Leafs’s schedule becomes comparatively easier after tonight’s game. It could be said that the Rangers are no walk in the park, but I think that Toronto can and will likely beat them. Though I’m hoping that they don’t of course.

Go Habs! Secure a playoff spot and send the Leafs to the golf course early for the second consecutive season.

I had to laugh, the habs played great when Dandenault was in the p-box. Note to Gainey: watch the replay on the goal after Dandenault went back on the ice after his penalty! Granted it was a killer for Halak, and that was a classic hit the puck outa the air, but hey, it is time to include Dandenault on the not to resign at the end of his contract year along with Abby!

Once again Pleks and Bonk are the heart of the team. And the rookies just make them look good. They even made Johnson look good, for once Johnson was in the right places at the right time, Gainey musta spiked his booze with Viagra or something….

I hope that Kovalev manages to shut them down in the third. Oh no, its the killer period for the habs, the third period. Dear God, please don’t let Koivu get a stupid penalty!

Just when the Rangers and the Laffs are trying their hardest to kick Montreal into the cellar again, if I were Carbo, I would bench Dandenault for the third period. What the hell is this of not playing Gorges!

I can’t believe this, Montreal has to learn how to clear the puck out of their own end. This is too scary, I can’t see why Carbo would play Dandenault in the dying seconds!

Another fortunate night for Toronto. Terribault started in goal for Pittsburgh and gave up 4 fairly quickly. He was replaced with Fleury, who has stopped everything.

It disgusts me that the leafs were on all the early games on CBC, except the one that carried the Ottawa game. There is a CBC montreal. Are we not also in a playoff race? What arrogance. That males 2 weeks in a row that they have pre-empted the habs game to show EVERYONE the leafs. Well, many were in agreement that a split this weekend would be a success, and that’s exactly what they got. Further, both Tampa and the Rangers are still very much within reach, and the Isles are playing as if they were elminated a week ago. Another win against Boston and anything is possible.

Montreal needs the Leafs to lose tomorrow. Badly.

Fortunately, the Leafs, while turning their home record around as of late, winning 7 in a row there, have also turned their road record around, losing their last 6 in a row. Here’s to New York helping them continue with that trend.

A bright spot for the Habs is that the Leafs have three less wins than they have. That might prove to be the deciding factor.

As an aside, if the Flames win 3 of their remaining 5, they’ll become the twelth team to reach 100 points this season. 12th. Gotta love those three-point games.

The point is, on the morale front, the Habs have it now over Toronto. TO is playing hurt and at some point Kaberle or Wellwood are gonna blow a gasket again and be put on the injured reserve. And Sundin is not about to carry the team, he always buckles when the pressure gets too much.

But the scariest thing is Montreal is not bringing anyone up to face down Antropov! Nor anyone to outmuscle Shanahan, the last few games, where in the past Montreal has buckled under the goons of other teams.

Here’s the bottom line. habs need to beat Boston, gain at least 1 point vs Rangers, and beat Toronto in regulation. It’s not likely. Habs WILL miss the playoffs. There’s no way they’re beating both NYR and leafs Not happening!
Toronto will finish in 8th spot, 1 point ahead of habs. That will very tough for habs to finish out of the playoffs, by 1 point.! But they have nobody to blame but themselves. They will look back at that game last night against the senators. A game in which they did NOT SHOW UP, and their laziness to put in any effort has cost them being the playoffs! They will learn a lesson a very hard way.

If you compare Gorges against Dandenault, Gorges is by far the better. What is Carbo doing playing a d-man who almost single handedly has given Montreal a losing attitude that slid us from fifth down to where we are fighting the miserable laffs?

Granted Bouillon has been forced to ante up, I think he was told either smarten up or ship out. In fact Dandenault should be on the benching.

And the scariest part in all of this is, in one of the more crucial games, either against the Rangers or the Laffs, Carbo will pull Halak and play Huet. Huet who sucked before he got hurt, Huet who lost us along with Dandenault and Koivu’s hooking penalties a secure playoff spot.

And our vets are not consistent. Tonite Koivu was there, but where the hell was he the other night? And why are we not getting any response from Johnson? I thought we got Johnson cause he is some scoring leader at the crucial times. If there was ever a more crucial time, this is it, we need Johnson to not fall over and shoot the puck into the net! Use his size and weight and not be the falling down drunk on the ice!

    Wow.

R habs 4 real, are you a seer? Because those are some pretty confident statements. If you are, then we (you too) might as well not bother watching the Habs final three games as we’ll aready be aware of their miserable fate… thanks to your talents. ;-)

I’ll go about as far as acknowledging that your prediction is a possiblity. That is, I’ll admit that it’s possible that the Habs will lose to both New York and Toronto, and possibly finish in 9th place. But I’ll also acknowledge the possibility that the Habs will defeat New York, Toronto or both and secure themselves a playoff spot. Because I, unlike you, do not have the ability to see into the future, let alone predict the outcomes of NHL games.

Some fans in Carolina very likely said that there was no way their Canes could lose to the Flyers. And so on.

Now is the time we need Dipietro to play for NYI. If only they could beat NYR Tuesday and leafs Thursday, or at least 1 of those games, it would help us tremendously. Do they have any other goalie? Can we lend them Halak? I wish we could. They’re out of the race, so I’m sure they would love to beat their cross town rivals, NYR. Just a thought. We need help from some other team.

Or, the Habs could just win their three remaining games, forcing the Leafs to go 4-0 to earn 8th place. If the Habs are confused with reggard to how to accomplish this, then they should watch the Flames and take notes.

    The good news:

    - The Habs have owned Boston;
    - They’ve recently defeated the Rangers in an important game;
    - And they’ve recently defeated the Leafs in an important game.

While I wish that they were playing more consistently, I’m not exactly without confidence that they can pull off a 3-game sweep.

Home and road records mean nothing at this time of year. Calgary had a lousy home record before winning four in a row on the road down the stretch, against VERY good teams. The Leafs have accomplished the same thing at home down the stretch.

Anyway, with regard to the thought that the Leafs are consistent, no, they’re not. I live in Toronto, I’ve seen the games, and I can tell you that they’ve got lucky on several occasions. They should’ve lost two of their recent wins. Honestly, they should have.

    I guess we’ll see.

A strong effort last night. It’s what we need for the 3 rremaining games. Anything less will hand it to the hated leafs. It’s too much to ask, but it’d be nice to see a NY sweep of the leafs, where they don’t get a single point. Still, Lundqvist has played pretty well since x-mas, and maybe Dunham can squeeze one more good game out of his sieve frame. That game in hand the leafs have is looming large. So a little help would be great.

The bonus is, if we have the same # of points at season’s end, we get in based on more wins. Though I’m sure that if the pukes at CBC had their way, they’d institute a rule that says the leafs win every tie-break, regardless of wins, head-to-head records, etc. It truly makes me sick the way they pre-empted the Habs game to show the leafs. Judging by their new contract, it will continue. Which has me emptying my belly even now. Good thing I have Center Ice, or I would see maybe 15 games all year, instead of all of them…

Good game last night. Living here in Toronto only the Leafs are on tv. I could only listen to the Habs on NHL.com. You will see in the future the only games will be the leafs from coast to coast. This is unfair regardless of the advertising $$$ that the leaf games bring in. Not all 33 million people in Canada are leafs fans. Does CBC know that there are other teams in Cananda besides the Leafs. The Only time that we will see Montreal is in the playoffs, which looks pretty bleek right now. If the Leafs should beat NY. today it could be all over. Yes, I know I said that before and got egg on my face but this is a reallity now. The leafs will be in 8th spot and the Habs will bumped back down into 9th again so this weekend would be a bust. See Toronto got that F_ckin one point aginst Atlanta.

As of tonight we could be out of the playoffs.

Breaking News: Sundin not playing tonight, back to Sweden!

According to several sources, Toronto Maple Leafs’ captain Mats Sundin is going back to Sweden to take care of ”important family matters”.

Still according to sources, not only will Sundin miss tonight’s game against the New York Rangers, but it is apparently questionable whether he’ll be able to be back in time for tuesday’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers as well.

No word yet on the exact reason why Sundin would be heading to Sweden but several rumors have already started to pop-up all over the web so we are asking you to keep this thread clean or else your comment will be deleted.

Tough loss for the Leafs who are in a crazy race for the 8th and final Playoffs spot.

Carolina shouldn’t have won the game. Florida was leading 3-1 with 8 minutes to go. Then they allowed a shorthanded goal, the Carolina tied it up with a few minutes to go. In overtime Florida was given a penalty, even tho the Canes player took a dive, and Belfour showed the referee the dive motion, and as a result Belfour was given an unsportsman like penalty, on the same play, and with florida 2 men short for 2 minutes, of course Carolina scored, and won the game. trust me, Carolina did NOT DESERVE TO WIN THE GAME! I say that, because if by some miracle, the NYI could muster a win against the leafs, (in regulation), and we could beat the NYR, then it wouldn’t matter what happens in our game vs leafs, because we would be tied , and we win the tie breaker, because we have more wins. Come to think of it, on Tuesday and Thursday, put a curse on NYR. I think we could beat them, but our D has to be almost perfect. I just hope we aren’t forced to beat the leafs. That game scares me.

Just goes to show that the Habs and even the Canes want it more then T.O. does. And you want to know why Mats Sundin always dissapears at crunch time? Because he doesn’t care about winning. Why else would he want to stick around in Toronto?

Two goals. and assist and beating up Darcy Tucker. I’m actually starting to like Sean Avery. That was the best move Glenn Sather has made at the deadline since his Oilers days. Did you know he had the choice between Balej, Hainsey, Hossa and Pleks in the Kovalev deal in 2004? And he took Balej.

anyone out there worried about our game vs NYR? Rangers looked real good, and skating hard. What are our chances against them? You know we have to come out of that game with at least 1 point, otherwise leafs could end our season on Thursday. All these stressful games are causing my vertigo to come back. 2 wins coupled with one loss in the next 2 for the leafs, and that last game’ll mean nothing: to the leafs at least. Boston game is very winnable, and we can beat the NYR as well. In recent seasons, we’ve owned them. Let’s hope that trend continues…

I loved the way the national media took TO’s win, like as if they had a chance, and then the way they all but did not report that Montreal had the last spot.

Of course what happened to the Laffs could also happen to the habs. If Koivu and the vets decide to play lazy we could easily end up being overtaken either by the laff or the rangers, however mathematically and in morale, it seems impossible for not even little Koivu and maybe even Johnson not to be swept up by the emotion and play like their salary depends on it.

The icing on the cake was the tone of voice and disbelief at TSN when the laffs lost by so much yesterday!

Why did Koivu & Ryder’s line only play 13 shifts for 11:06 of ice time against Buffalo. They scored two goals between them. “There was no particular message I was sending with this decision,” head coach Guy Carbonneau said. “The Sabres decided to play with three lines and I was able to get the matchups I wanted.”

What in the hell was that. What is Carbo up to now. Why bench his one of his top lines. Does he really know what he is doing? I don’t know……

As far as I am concerned that was a very stupid move. There are players on that team that should be benched. Those two were not two of them.

I agree, but I think it was to punish them for the lacklustre play of the other night more like. I think the message was loud and clear. Especially to the agents of Koivu and Ryder, if you want to keep getting the big bucks score.

After all it is largely Koivu and Ryder on top of Huet and Dandenault’s lacklustre play that got us where we are, oh yes we can’t forget Rivet’s flu and Kovalev’s elbow, and the whole other retinue of excuses for the habs lacklustre play, LaPresse, the taxman, overdemanding fans and of course, because Celine Dion was not there to sing the national anthem, did I forget any more excuses? Oh yes, the anglo bigots who complain about every other little thing, like Bettman’s conspiracy to destroy the habs…etc…

If it is because of their not so good play. Why were they not benched before, They have been on a roll as of late.

Leave it to Guy Carboneau to be like the old French Army of old, blame after the game, arbitary though it may be. He did the same to the rookies early in the year and got us into a slump. It is sad when the coach is totally out of touch of reality. It is true what one blogger early this year had to say. Gainey and Carboneau see a totally different game than we do, they are out to lunch, never have returned from that Helicopter Charter over Montreal…when will they get down to earth and realize, hey you need the rookies?

Anyone know of any psychic who can reach into that other netherworld where Gainey and Carboneau live in, so we can beam them real actual play by plays from previous games showing Bouillon or Dandenault working against the habs? You know where they give away the puck and help screen the habs goalie?

I don’t understand why Dandenault plays when Georges is available. Isn’t that the reason we obtained Georges? And please get Bouillon out of the lineup. Dandenault and Bouillon are absolutely horrible! And their minus rating proves it. The reason why Koivu’s ice time was limited, was because he has a very bad minus rating, and on Friday vs Ottawa, he was on the ice for 4 Ottawa goals! He is lousy defensively this year! He really should be on the 4th line. Was anyone aware that Koivu has never scored more than 21 goals in a season? That’s pathetic! And he’s on our 1st line? During the offseason we need to address that problem, and get a bonafide 1st line, with real snipers, because our 1st line is a joke. Koivu-20 goals, Higgins-20 goals, Ryder-27 goals.
Only 1 good goal scorer on the line, just won’t cut it!
    And please revamp the D!

Carboneau just loves the heck outta Dandenault and Bouillon, honestly! I don’t know why. But never mind Koivu being bad defensively, if Dandenault or Bouillon could get assists in all of the Canadian’s losses, they would beat Koivu’s assist record! Honestly. By assists I mean where Dandenault or Bouillon basically stop the play, pass the puck to the other team and they score! How many times do we see that? Or how Dandenault or Bouillon screen our goalie! And Carbo loves them?

Never mind them for now, what we could use is better D-men like Chippy and Grabby and even D’Agostini, these rookies are great with Milroy and Lapierre and Lats. The whole gang of them had the media wondering if Carbo was a great coach, then Carbo had to go and ship them down. For all you hall monitors out there, the principal has called you into detention cause you are all too busy brown nosing Gainey and making excuses as to why we can’t use our rookies! Look to the other teams who have exclusively used rookies!

I think Carbo loves Dandenault and Bouillon because they’re french canadien. If they were european, they’re gone! Yeah, I believe the Kovalev story to the russian paper, saying carbo loves his own frenchies, and hates Euros.

Guys-food for thought. If the Rangers beat the Isles tomorrow night than the Rangers are in. Which would make it easier for the Habs to beat the Rangers Thursday night.

It would make it easier for the habs, provided they decide to play their backup goalie, Valiquette, not play as hard. Here’s another scenario: NYR wins tomorrow, lose to habs, and lose to Pitt, combined with a habs win vs Boston and the leafs, leaves NYR 1 point behind the habs. I doubt NYR will win their final game in Pitt, but we MUST WIN IN BOTH NY AND TORONTO. Tough task for us. We need NYI to beat the leafs on Thursday, tho chances of that happening, are slim due to NYI bad goaltending, and pretty much being out of the playoff chase.
