Andrei Markov signs 4 year $23 Million Deal

Andrei Markov has signed a 4 year contract that will pay him $23 Million.
First thoughts…..Big Bucks.
Markov has grown into an elite player in the NHL and without doubt the Canadiens best defenseman. Elite defenseman have big price tags. Getting Markov inked was the most important priority the Habs faced this off-season.
Imagine a Habs defense without Markov and it’s not a pretty thought…
Is $23 Million too much for Guy Carbonneau’s “General”? Time will tell.
The next logical thought is that there is little or no money available to sign Sheldon Souray. Bob Gainey may already know that Sheldon Souray is a goner. He’s long been rumored to be on the way out and if it wasn’t already decided, the $23 million dollars less to spend might seal it.

OUr winning percentage was horrific without this stud on defence so signing him was a must. 5.75 is alot however he would have gotten 7 on the open market. WE would have had to spend at least 6 to get timonen so keeping Markov is the best move. Good job Gainey. Just dont sign Briere to 7 million please.

Yeah, we had this sign this guy. I think 5.75 million is a lot of money, but how much would this guy have cost elsewhere ?
With the same money, could we have get better guys ? Don’t think so, it would have cost more money to get something like him, or two other guy less good. So we needed him. If we lost him, we would have go no more defense at all, I can only think of Komisarek, who is getting better and better and markov is helping him in that way.
But I still believe we could have signed him for a bit less, like 5.25. But that’s Gainey budget, not sure it’s good but what can I say. I still think he gave too much money to Koivu and Kovalev (I am not talking about samsonov here).

You have to admit, Markov has what it takes, but what everyone forgets is Hockey is a team sport. Unless you have constant level of defense, having a great defenseman on one line for only part of the game means what, some 40 or 45 minutes of watching Dandenault and Bouillon basically destroy the defense, and basically ruin the confidence of up and coming rookies? It’s like having one really nice tire on the car and using cheapies for the rest….guess what, its gonna ruin your ride and your engine….and it looks weird.

Too much money. But it’s pretty much the going rate, and with all the negative press about racism towards Russian players in Montreal this past season, I guess they had to throw their wallet at the only Russian who apparently still wants to play for the habs. This doesn’t bode well for a Souray signing, which saddens me, as I kind of enjoyed having an effective power play the last few seasons.

At 5.75 per year, this is the going rate for a guy like Markov so it’s fair to the market value.
But you can kiss Souray goodbye. His shot and leadership will be missed. His defensive play, passing and skating won’t.

If you can’t see Dandenault for being what he is, a really lousy defenseman, and the other just as lousy defenseman and all those losses we had to endure all year long, like, gee, Habs fans, eyes open but brain ain’t working….no wonder Gainey can rip you off, and give you the con job of “great chemistry” for Sakku’s slump, Johnson’s slips, and Kovalev’s elbow and don’t forget Jack Todd’s fav. It is sad that Gainey would sign Markov for so much for so long, leaving very little room to manouver, yet continuing to waste money on the likes of Dandenault and Bouillon, and praising **** like Johnson, Ninnima and Samsonov.

How many “great” hockey players have that stupid and unique skill of destroying a promising offense with young rookies and turn it into a horrible loss at the hands of lousy defensemen like Ninnima, Dandenault, and Bouillon?
Where the hell was Johnson all this time that he was supposedly shutting down Crosby and Alfredsson? No where, he is the great white ghost on the team, the spirit falling on the ice after he gets so boozed up he can’t even check instead he falls on the other team….how many times did we see that?
What kind of GM would keep a coach who changes lines more often than his socks? Man that was so Un-NHL-like, what is so professional about that? What kind of “great God-like” wisdom is that for a GM to watch his coach basically destroy a winning momentum with getting rid of rookies who were responsible for all the victories and benching good players just so Dandenault and Bouillon and even friggen Samsonov and Johnson could get more ice time so they “could get better”….well it sure didn’t work that way, I still can’t believe Gainey would say something like that. Ya right, they were so good they cost us a foot into the door of the playoffs. So answer this, if Gainey is so good, why did he allow all the **** that went on, the prima donna complaints by Rivet, Kovalev and even Koivu?

Well, after i heard the news about the Markov signing i had to let it digest a little. Obviously this means that Souray will sign elsewhere…my guess is in Anaheim because they feel they need to hoard all the best defenseman in the league.
I personally love Souray here in Montreal, however if Markov is worth almost six million a season, Souray will be commanding close to 7 mill after his “career” year. I would rather see him leave than to give him that kind of money, only to end up with another Bryan Mccabe scenario because we all know Souray will not be scoring 26 goals next year, probabaly not even 15. Good luck to Souray with his future team, but lets concentrate on fixing the in-house problems with our money in aquiring another top centre-man, and a scoring winger. I am sick and tired of seeing Kovalev’s talent go to waste because he either does not want to play here, or is injured or againg or just really is passive about winning. I like the prospect of briere coming to town…we need a player that we can brag about, a scorer…someone who will actually be up there with the leaders in scoring. When was the last time we had a player net over 80 points anyway?
We have great youth on the team and i see great promise in Higgins, Ryder, Komisarek,Plekanec and Latendresse. Koivu is entering the twilight of his career and is really passionate about winning here in Montreal. Only a couple missing pieces and we will have a stanley cup winner in no time. I predict with confidence a cup banner raised in this city within 5 years.
Any comments to that?

Well said Chris, I agree. But on only a couple of missing pieces I have to disagree, a bit, more like we have way too many wrong pieces to begin with to really have a cup contender.

I don’t understand why Carbo and Gainey don’t remember that size and talent are a key ingredent to building a winner,they should emulate Burke and the Ducks!

I Agree with Josh. ME and you are like kindred spirits. We are confused and have many problems. BUt when it comes to hockey we know best. THe media is Montreal is correct about everything they right and really should be the people running the team. TIcket prices should be free and only players under the age of 22 should be allowed to play for the habs. Okay maybe 23. WE should trade away all leaders and big name players so that when youngsters like Higgins and Komi become free agents they will have no reason to stay and take off. Also the team should move from Montreal to HULL.

Lapierre should be captain and play on the PP with Latendresse and Begin. Also we should bring up Groulx, CHipchura and Milroy to be the second PP unit. ALso me and Josh will be taking over the off ice services. NO more jerseys or flags allowed in the arena. ALso no cheering of encouragement for the team after the opening face off. THis is a business and we should not be able to enjoy the team unless it is run like a regular 9-5 job. ALso no families allowed anymore and we will decide where eveyrone sits and encourage opposing teams fans to attend the games. NO more beer or food sold at the games. Just water and sour grapes. We must remember we are not fans to enjoy the game or to have hope. We must only be critics. HOckey is a business and must not be taken to heart. IF we win we say nothing, if we lose we will be heard. THIS IS THE WAY OF ME AND JOSH>

WE must remember it is not about trying to win a cup. IT is about bringing youth to teh team. IT is about giving up on players before they have a second chance. IF a player is hurt like BOullion and misses the whole offseason workout and is behind the eight ball and has a bad year, he is out. NO questions asked. Players dont rebound. Like cmon Sure Selanne is a great player agian and was **** three years ago but how often does that happen. ONly about 40 percent of the time. INjuries dont cut it. If a player is almost blinded and has a career year but takes a few hoopking players then we get rid of him. ITs not about building a cup contender, its about getting rid of players as soon as they upset us a little. SUre Latendresse may be extremely slow, overly confident and overated but we like him because he is young and has a chance to become better one day. NOT FASTER OF COURSE. We want order not a cup. But wait what will happen when we get everything we want. Well thats the fun part, we will find new reasons and new names to target. HAHAHAHAHA

Okay, We all know that Souray asks for a bit much, but personally the guys deserves it. If we lose Markov, we need Souray, I love Souray. It is very difficulty to score 28 goals in a season as a DEFENCEMAN! I mean not even the offensive players score that many goals and for sure there will be changes because the Habs didn’t make the playoffs this year, but there is no reason to sign Souray somewhere else. If anything Begin should leave, he’s done absolutely nothing this season and Carboneau should talk some sense into Kovalev, all of a sudden he stopped being amazing like he used to be. I’m pretty shocked at what kind of money Markov is making, Souray will defenatly ask for at least 7 million if Markov is getting 6. Don’t trade Souray! That’s for sure. With an 100 mph slap shot, Gainey better leave him where he is!

Have you just awaken from a comma? We signed Markov to a to a 4 year deal…so we’re not losing him unless we want to. May you have split personalities? Because you go on to state this fact later in your post about how Markov terms of his contract. Then you go on ripping Begin? Begin’s return from his injury (broken foot) although premature definatly not at 100% and playing as a 4th liner, gave the team a boost by adding heart to our team that was struggling to show up during one of the most horrific losing steaks in recent history. Souray would be a great player to keep but the same goes for players such as Smyth, Breire, Drury, ect. at what point does the cost out weigh the benefit?
