Montreal Canadiens 2007 Entry Draft
Who will the Canadiens be picking up this Friday at the draft? A future star? …Or stars? Or future duds? Late round sleeper picks? Or an average crop of average players?
Will the Canadiens go with local boy Angelo Esposito who almost everyone is pegging them to take? Will he even be available? Will the Canadiens trade up? Trade down?
McGuire Says:
Montreal is upset about McDonagh coming off the board. That being said, Montreal is dying for a local person to stimulate the fans and the team. The Canadiens are not going to miss this time like they did by passing on Denis Savard years ago. Esposito has some maturing to do, but the Habs think he can do it. Cuthbert scooped me on Couture, and MacLean took McDonagh, so Esposito is next.
Bob Gainey shocked everyone by picking Carey Price. Nobody saw it coming and there was lots of doubt and negativity surrounding it at the time. Fast forward 2 years and it appears to be a pretty smart move and potentially a brilliant one.
So…what’s in store for the Canadiens at this draft?

I hope the habs sit tight at the draft. If Esposito is available at 12 then take him. My personal pick would be Sutter. With the grit in those blood lines how could you go wrong.

I, for one, am not adverse to picking Esposito if he’s available. That said, I figure we’d have to trade up to get him. The truth is, the Habs never seem to pick the guy I think they will. I’ll be watching anyways.

The draft is a crap shoot anyways so with two 1st round picks I’m pretty the Habs will trade one to move up and take a chance on Esposito. I’m also looking for Gainey to do a major trade, there are always Marleau and Lecavalier rumours but who knows cuz his trades seem to come out of nowhere and surprize us. As for UFA rumours, I hear Bertuzzi’s on his radar, hope not but I guess Big Bert’s better than having more of those Samsonov/Kovalev types. And I’m pretty much resigned to the fact that Sheldon Souray will move on, not that big a loss considering his defensive liabilities, I will miss that slap shot and his leadership though those were invaluable. Should be an exciting next couple of weeks for the Habs with the draft, possible trades and the UFA shopping day… God I love hockey.

If Espo is available or the Habs don’t have to give up to much to trade up a couple of spots to get him, then do it. I want Brandon Sutter to be drafted by the Habs cause he has everything the Habs need in a player. He’s tough, he’s big, he’s got grit, and he’s got plenty of skill and a hockey pedigree that not many can claim to have. He’s Ryan Getzlaf with better hockey bloodlines.
But many seem to have a feeling that the Habs will make a deal today, Thursday June 21rst. Stay tuned.

Yo Joberg, a good morning to you from Vancouver Island.I think we could do a player swap with Detroit ,Kovalev for BIG Burt and I’m all for it! In fact I pray for that one.You know Big Burt kinda impressed me the end of last year,at the start of last season he has to learn to play with a new team”Panthers”;then ,bad news career ending back injury the experts said he couldn’t come back from.So does he quit,HELL NO,he rebuilds himself and gets traded to another Team “Wings” and pulls it off.I for one will welcome BIG BURT to the C.H. and the sweet part of the deal….N O M O R E K O V A L E V !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Getting Bertuzzi, in my opinion is a stop gap move for the upcoming season, definitely not for the future. So, I say let someone else have him.
Time to be thinking about the future seasons and who would have the most value!
I read that Espo’s motivation is in question for some scouts, if true, then he shouldn’t be on the Habs list.
Posted on June 21st, 2007 at 3:32 pm. About 'Montreal Canadiens 2007 Entry Draft'.
What the hell is all this about Bertuzzi? Hope none of it is true, I can’t believe I once thought he was Cam Neely’s illegitimate son. He hasn’t looked good since breaking that guy in two.
I’m sure he’s a very nice guy and all, but I don’t want to watch him on the Habs injury list all next season. You are screwed in the NHL if you have a bad back - just ask Wendy Clark.
Does anyone know where I can find a good website that has an accurate salary cap figure for the Habs (and other teams)? I’ve looked and can’t find one that isn’t stuck back in 2005, or that even got 2005 correct for that matter. I need a reliable website to go to on this - or I swear I’m going to freakin’ create one!
Thanks in advance for any help!

Thank you Habs8!
I really hope the Habs do SOMETHING to fix the centre depth this offseason. Getting nothing for Souray was a big mistake, and Gainey has got to know by now that fans are getting restless. He’s got to make something happen. If UFAs don’t want to come here, he’s got to make a deal to bring a big center in to put up some numbers. Koivu, although I love the guy, is a second line center at this point in his career - you can’t expect him to be the #1 guy anymore. Even though he gets paid like one.
I was a big supporter of Gainey going into last year, and even bought the company line about Samsonov - even though Bruins fans told me he has one good game and takes the next five off. As much as I like the development of the farm kids and see potential for a great lineup soon, I don’t like his recent record of UFA deals. Or lack thereof.
We need offense badly. We need a big center to anchor the first line. Worst in the league 5-on-5 isn’t sitting well with me right now, that’s a stat they have to improve on next season or it’s out the door with both Coach and GM in my mind - because if they are worst in the NHL 5-on-5 next season you can kiss the playoffs goodbye as well.
I’m hoping for two good picks in the draft - ahh, screw it and send them all + a few bodies to TB for Vinnie and let’s rock!
Yeah right - keep dreaming Borg9!

I say keep building around Sakku, even though I don’t agree with the continual downsizing and midget habs we have now, only to be backed up by big softies kinda like the little bully and his big retard friend, the only problem is usually the big retard friend actually fights, in Montreals’ case the big retards get the bejesus kicked outta them though, so all we have are little friggen tykes who rile up the other team only to have them basically shut down Montreal….we all seen that just afta Christmas with Sakku and company….but hey if we are gonna keep Captain Hook, let’s build around him at least…..
Esposito would be a natural to Captain Hook’s hooks, another small tyke to get knocked around, should make for fast exciting hockey up to when Charra, Straka and other big types knock down our little fast skating habs….I can’t wait to see Salamander sprawled out next to Sakku come December….
But hey, the other beauty of a good entry draft is you can trade the little farts for guess what…other broken down Rookies ala Salamander style or broken down vets ala Cullimore style, or hey or just trade for Finnish players who skate fast but can’t pass or shoot good..oh wait that’s Sakku and Salamander, add Cappucino Lahte there, great…sounds like we are going to Tim Hortons…yes we’ll have a Koivu Kookie, a Salamander Salad and A Lahti double decaffe!

Hey all……I just read on TFP that Montreal is in the mix for Tanguay…supposedly Calgary is looking at Ryan Smyth and would need to clear some cap room(wouldn’t that be a punch to the head of the oilers!) There is also rumour that a trade tommorrow will be announced that Marleau is a HAB. No details on that but ?????? I think we will see the habs stay with the 1st rounder they have and trade the sharks 1st rounder back to them for Marleau. We may see a Kovy and Ryder deal to the Flames for Tanguay. Possible!!
Thoughts anyone…….

It has been speculated that the habs have offered Iginla a new 3 year deal worth about 20 million dollars. Word is he wants 21 or so.
In other news, the leafs have just signed Danny De Vito to a one year deal to replace Tie Domi as the team pimp. They hope that the tough demeaner and looks get through other teams confidence.

Wow! I miss hockey… I wish it was year round. Anyway, the Habs pick at the draft:
12- Angelo Esposito 6′1, 180lbs, C, L
22- TJ Brennan 6′0, 204lbs, D, L
43- Maxime Tanguay 5′11, 175lbs, C, L
65- Joonas Jarvinen 6′3, 211lbs, D, L
73- Vili Sopanen, 6′4, 209lbs, RW, R
Hopefully Esposito will be available. But you can pretty much guarantee Tanguay’s coming to Montreal.
As for the free agents, Kariya, Briere and Hamrlik would be great additions. Replacements for Kovi, Bonk and Niinimaa. Ah, to be a GM…

I think the Canadiens will make a trade tomorrow … kovalev to pittsburgh for draft pick + Malone
If this goes thru, then expect Surrey to be sign the following week, as there will be some cap space avaialble ..
Also, I see Gainey trading one of his #1 picks + Ryder for a player who can help them now … Not sure who ??? Marleau, Lecavalier ??? for Lacavalier they will obviously have to give more …

Well Higgy21, Big Burt next season might have a question or two,but Kovalev’s next year should be played far away from Montreal;like Siberia ! It will be imposable to rebuilt the Habs with that cancer even just sitting on the bench, lol. Kovalev is a lier and a scammer and a big time game player,as well probably the softest player in the league, you know,a real role model for young fans and young players, deep six the useless tit!!! So once again if the trade could be done,by all means Bob ,getherdone! And I’ll tell you another thing while we’re on the subject, all you idiots are knocking the resigning of Sourey, yet stay kinda silent about Kovalev? You are a messed up bunch of fans ,get real !!!

You have no idea what you are talking about and you ARE NOT a Habs fan. Wasn’t it just a few months ago that you admitted you were a Laffs fan and loved them to death, you moron! Why don’t you go back to those 1967 pieces of shit, asshole. I hate your guts Josh. You don’t deserve to be a Habs fan. The Laffs got Toskala and again gave away pieces of their future. That is why they will never win a cup again. They don’t know the meaning of the word rebuild. They are losers and always will be. I hate them and I hate you too, Josh. Go home, loser!

The Laffs drastically overpay for a shaky goalie who won, then lost the Sharks #1 gig and an overpaid, underacheiving big body in Mark Bell.
The Panthers got a #1 goalie……who disappears come playoff time.
But, when push comes to shove they improved themselves. If Gainey sits tight this weekend he’ll be sending the message that that Habs are looking 3-4 years down the line and I wouldn’t be suprised if the Habs are not very good next season and that Koivu demands a trade at the deadline next season.

It’s sad when McDonough is the same height as the Rat Bettman! Heck I bet Bettman can bodycheck McDonough without even trying!
Crazy Bob looked like some escaped goon from a mental asylum in his TSN interview! Heck there are bigger more tough defensemen.
And then there is all this friggen “new NHL” what a pile of crap. It’s Bettman’s sure scam to ensure some teams don’t go big and are guaranteed to lose. So what’s the bribe that NHL Governors have to pay Bettman to not be part of the New NHL and have a large team like the Ducks? Gee…
I mean even Straka who is small like Koivu can knock over our big softies fool!
And then we pass up Esposito? Now he’s gonna be picked second or third for habs and come with an attitude now! Way to go Crazy Bob!
Once again the cobwebs swirl around the Habs spreadsheet, while Crazy Bob gets to hog all the coins for his helicopter rides around Montreal! Oh gee! Crazy Bob didn’t make any great moves cause he has to protect his Helicopter Charter budget! Heck let’s all chip in and buy Crazy Bob a helicopter so he can for once buy a real NHL player instead of all the cheap friggen crap no one wants! And to think he was willing to give away the shop to select a loser like McDonough, another small defenseman! Way to go Crazy BoB!

It’s the blind leading the blind, and Don Carnage is so blind and now irreparably blind cause hey his head is so far up Crazy Bob’s rear! The strong smell of putrid brain damage permeates today as everyone praises Crazy Bob today for going small again, while the rest of the draft goes big! Bejesus boys! If your rookies are being picked based on the Ducks template, guess what, its another season of your small rookies, and your small broken down players being outmuscled, outskated…another season of Koivu in the penalty box, competing with Lahti for hooking penalties! The Scandinavian league is a nasty league full of hooks and nasty wimpy penalties! Only problem is, this is the old NHL where your bigger, faster players grind down your small habs defense and outscore and beat Montreal time after time. One more season of watching the habs lose!
Now Esposito is now going to Pittsburgh where his natural stick handling skills will be used against Montreal!

Actually McDonough is criticized for not going into the corners, he is criticized for taking chances cause of his small size in comparision to the larger more able players. Get your facts straight! 200 pounds and 6.1 inches is a midget in the NHL, heck that puts McDonough at a disadvantage, another softie defenseman to add to our roster of already too soft defensemen!

Unfortunately, Pach is only one player, on one line, that means Crazy Bob has not solved a solid two or three lines that can both provide offense or solid defense…..there is at least the summer to help with clawing outta the bad moves of today. But knowing Crazy Bob, he’ll trade Pach for another broken down Finnish rookie or defense….and Pach and Esposito will come back and remind Montreal of just how bad it has become….now I know why no one in the league wants to come to Montreal. Who wants to play with really crappy players, join a GM who has the midas touch? It’s not the media, its not the fans, good hockey players don’t wanna come to Montreal cause hey, there are no good hockey players left in Montreal!

I said in another blog…..mark my words, if they don’t take Esposito it will bite them in the butt worse than Savard…..proved right tonite. Crosby, Esposito……..he could be as bad as you all say but doesn’t matter playing with Crosby..he is now a star!!!!
Now, I hate Bob Gainey…..this guy is screwing his own hockey team….no trades, not signing Souray, bad picks…..time to fire him and hire McGuire!
That’s one train of thought……..Price??????not Brule????? Looks like a good pick now……who knows, maybe these were the right choices…..now we need to see some moves…..I say get Tanguay or Marleau or trade some of the prospects for Vinnie……….Bob needs to make some moves…..I am getting scared!!!

Wow, a GM running one of the most offensively challenged teams in the NHL, and Bob passes over the local kid who will be boom or bust in Espo and a can’t miss Russian in Cherepanov who is going to be a 50 goal guy.
Instead they go with, for the second year in a row, Mr.Hockey from the Minnesota high school league again in McDonagh and I guy who looks like a guy the Habs could use in Max Pacioretty. But both of these guys are going to take a while. And they are American! No offense intended to Americans, but didn’t we learn our lesson with LeClair, Schneider and Chelios? The minute these guys turn UFA they’re going back to the States if they turn into star players.
Gainey is really sticking with the build threw the draft philosophy and this won’t appease the natives or Koivu! If the Habs are struggling to make the playoffs again this year I have a feeling that Koivu will asked to be traded to a contender, and since he has a NTC, he holds the cards on who the Habs can trade him to.
RDS is reporting however that all the major deals will go down tommorow, so we’ll see.

Mr Carnage,I admire your passion and dedication concerning our Habs team; that being said ,there is no comparing the Habs with Detroit. While it’s true the Habs scored 13 fewer,as a team there +\- was totaly horrific, add Detroit as a perennial play-off contender and the fact the Wings were not in the finals last time, the point is useless. The reality Don is all fans on this Blog site love the Habs and most of the fans are AT WITTS END AND WANT CHANGES NOW.Enough with the rebuilding, the loosing, the horrible play-off results”if we even get in them”:and enough with the excuses already…..FIX THE FUCKING TEAM!!!!!

Too much over-analyzing of every single detail of hockey operations. You won’t know for years who did well or not at this draft.
Seriously, some of you really have a problem (Josh). Don’t you have anything else to do other than complain non-stop? And if you have to complain all the time can you find something new to complain about?
The draft in recent years is far from a problem with the habs. And I suspect this draft will follow that pattern.
So chill out, relax, wait for free agency to start.
And take solace in this thought:
Thank God I’m not a Leafs fan!

Don Carnage….sorry…..I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings. I sincerely hope you can forgive my negativity..it’s just that I am so upset that my beloved Montreal Canadiens are struggling. I so desperately wish I could do something to assist them. I am just so broken up here…I was really counting on Mr. Gainey to make some imrpovements and I feel that he did not do that. I am very disappointed. I hope that he is able to improve the team through free agency. I believe with every fibre of my body that Montreal can be restored to its prior glory. I have faith that Mr. Gaineys expertise in hockey matters will guide us to the cup again soon. What can we do to be contructive here? Do you have any ideas. I would like to share them with each other and then maybe we can write them down and send them to Mr. Gainey for his review. I believe that this will have a positive effect and maybe then Mr. gainey will be able to guide the Habs back to the playoffs. Hey…here’s an idea….what if we sent a bouquet of flowers everday to the Habs with a note wishing them all the best. What do you think? Would this help Mr. Gainey realize that there are some positive fans out there who really care about the Montreal Canadiens? let me know what your thoughts are.
Gratefully yours,

GET REAL! The reality is Montreal sucks!! I am a life long fan of the habs, born and bred on them since I was in diapers….I have a freakin’ picture of the Rocket in my study and a little stand-up figurine of Saku. I eat, breathe, drink, and sleep the HABS. I spend my money on their merchandise. I watch all of their games..hell, I even have a huge hockey card selection of Montreal dating back to the 60’s. Don’t tell me that I can’t blast them when they deserve to be blasted!!! The fact is Montreal has been a lack-lustre team since 1993. That organization is living off the incredulous passion of their fans. They know damn well that even if they suck, the fans will always go to the games, buy the merchandise, etc, etc. They don’t have to get better as long as the owner is making money….haven’t you figured that out yet. When they stop having consecutive sell-outs then, and only then, will they feel the need to improve the team immediately, not “build for the future” as Mr. Gainey and Mr. Timmins always talk about. The future is now….the fans are mad as hell and rightfully so…..this team can be much better than they are if the management would stop making bad decisions like Kovy, Sammy, Cerzkawski, Perrault, etc…..this list goes on…..they also need to quit being all about defence…”defence wins games”….like hell…does anybody really think Montreal won all those cups because of defence?????? NO….it was offence….plain and simple….goals win games, not defence! Did ya notice how their first pick was another defenceman?????? Montreal will wallow in this hole of mediocrity until they start to get and allow their offensive players to play! I will always support the HABS but this is $%#@~! ridiculous!!
There, take that!! LOL

Actually a well balanced team with both Offense and Defense is the best team. Add in a superior goalie and you have a great chance to win the Stanley Cup.
Now, as far as some missed players…specifically Esposito….I’m thinking this may be the grounds for a trade between the Habs & Pittsburgh. If the discussions were such that Montreal wanted Esposito and perhaps Kovalev was in Pittsburgh’s plans well then who knows how things will end up.
I’m still hopeful for a trade with Tampa for Lecavalier. I’m not sold on Tanguay and what the cost might be. Now Iginla is the better way. I prefer Smith if I had a choice and welcome Marleau and see if he can work with Kovalev if he’s still there after everything settles.
Lots of work still left to be done….Let’s go Bob

Wow you guys are so full of s-h-i-t. I had my fingers crossed we wouldn’t pick Daigle, oops i mean Espo.
Hockey experts and analysts are saying we got the sleeper of the draft.
McDonough is arguably the best defencemen in the entire draft, for once I liike a Gainey move, solidify the back end. You habs fans are fickle and embarassing. This kid is gonna be awesome, another soft small skilled forward is NOT what we need. Espo will likely thrive in Pitts with sid, malkin and staal, here he wouldn’t.
Bravo Bob great pickup

I had a chance to watch Esposito play a few times during his junior tenure in Quebec. Had someone not told me who he was,I wouild not have noticed him. Anybody can look good on a great team, but its the player who can look great on a bad team that should garner a 1st round pick. Esposito was not that and thats why his stock dropped. As for going to Pittsburgh, they will be able to put the puck in the net but they are going to have a heck of a job keeping it out.I have also watched Fleurey during his Junior career (what you saw last year is what you get). Good picks by Gainey but definately needs some UFA shakeup and not Yashin,Lang or Bertuzzi.

Cherapanov? I watched the combine, and if there’s anything to be grateful about this draft, it’s that we didn’t draft that weakling. His conditioning was brutal, and he couldn’t benchpress 100 lbs more than once. For Christ’s sake, and Satan’s too, for that matter, I could bench press more than that in grade nine! Even now, I can bench more than that, and the only weight I’ve lifted in the past 16 years has been my lazy, fat a_s_s.
Bob says that ‘They liked Esposito, but didn’t have him at #12,’ or something similar.
I guess Max Pacioretty @22 was just too hard to pass up. When he’s still languishing in the AHL in 3 years, and Esposito is racking up 80 - 100 point seasons on Crosby’s wing, we’ll all appreciate Bob and Trevor’s fine eye for talent.
As far as I’m concerned, Gainey’s tenure as Habs GM has been a resounding failure. He gets proper cred for picking Price, and getting rid of Theodore, but what else has he done? Nothing.

The only reason that most of you are pissed is because the guy Montreal picked wasnt a name player. Does that really matter? Just because a lot of people dont know who this kid doesnt mean Jack. Nobody on this site is a scout and has seen this kid play so I’d take a breather i were you. Most analysts had him ranked as the #1 defenseman in the draft. Do u not see the direction montreal is taking? remeber last off-season when toront said they were going to build from the net out? Montreal is doing exactly what Toront o said they were going to do but in much smarter way. Toronto did their usual dumb things and went for the big signings and/or trades. They got Raycroft and overpayed for Kubina and Gill. Not to mention they signed McCabe to way too muhc money. Tnat didnt work out too well for them did it? Now they had to give up their pick to get Vesa Toskala from San Jose because Raycroft wasn’t what they expected. I’m liking Montreal’s plan a lot more. Were doing the same thing as toront but the smart way…through the draft. Carey Price is a bonafide number 1 goaltender. W have our goalie, good now on to DEFENSE. IMagine this D-corps in a couple of years.
Markov - Carle
Komisarek - Valentenko
Mcdonagh - FIshcher
Obyrne
Thats a very envious defense. Better than the sad excuse for one that we have now right? Forwards are coming. We’ve already got a hell of a lot of them. the kostitsyns, grabovski, Maxwell,White, Latendresse, higgins, D’Agostini, Ryder, pacioretty, Lapierre
Prospects-wise, after LA of cours, we are the envy of the league. Wait a second? didn’t L.A take a no name player too? Thomas Hickey? Wow these two teams who were rated 1,2 in prsopect depth by hokceys future must be out of their respective minds by not taking a player that everyone knew.

Hey fellow Hab fans! I’m new to this forum, so I’ll keep this brief. I must say that getting rid of Samsonov was a very happy moment for me, as I’m sure it was for a lot of you, however I’ve heard all the Kovy pros and cons, and I will be sad if we let him go. I know he’s not the most motivated guy, but with the right cast he’ll be fine! I’m pretty certain that we will lose Shelly, so I think that when July 1st rolls around, we need a legite d man. Anyone interested in Danny Markov? I watched him closely in the playoffs and he is rock solid! With him and Andrei back there, we’d be all right. We also need a proven scoring threat whenever he’s on the ice. Briere of course would be great, but I just don’t see it happening. I would be extatici if Smitty joined the fold. Again, I know it’s a long shot, but we’ll have to wait and see. I look forward to being a part of this forum, and for the upcoming events… mainly July 1st. Take Care all of you!

I was unhappy with losing both Espo and Charapenov….but the rest of the moves have made me wish for tomorrow even more….I can’t wait until we see the likes of Ninnima, Dandenault and Bouillon’s backs leave and the newer players come on line. Petrecks most of all, and man I can’t wait to see Subban duke them out…and the rest, thank God at least now we have a balance in the future and when this present bunch of rookies get better, like Lapierre, Grabby and the rest, this new bunch will even things out. But no one of real size, or weight, we have a bunch of tall skinnies to look forward to. The sad fact though is the Ducks have thrown the glove down and big and fast rule the world. All Montreal has are fast, too bad. But hey you never know, maybe Price can make up for our lack of size at least…

That history is from the past way back when they used to be six teams …. in todays NHL there are good players from all over the planet, You will always see a good number of Canadian players and that wont change anytime soon, but as time goes by and we see more and more teams added to the NHL we see more and more players from other places pop up , normal the well runs dry after a certain number of teams the talent pool of good young canadian players will run dry. As for french speaking players same deal they are and will be spread out over the NHL, there are only so many to start with, and the same rule applies , we cant corner the market on french speaking players and we should not want to either, we only want one or two of the better ones thats all ..
Other than that its just more of the same like the PQ with their we need more white frenching speaking children born in quebec.. wonder why huh …

I kind of wish the morons would go back to their holes and let the good guys say their opinions without all the trash talking. The bottom line in this draft is nobody knows how any of it will pan out. All I know is Bertuzzi and Yashin don’t belong with the Montreal Canadiens.
Posted on June 24th, 2007 at 4:42 pm. About 'Montreal Canadiens 2007 Entry Draft'.
I’d still like to believe the scouting department is doing a good job. Price is the key for the team going forward. Looks like Bob is trying to build a solid wall around him by the time Price starts to hit his prime.
Hope there is a big centerman in the offing come free agency time, but please please don’t let it be Count Chokeula Yashin. That has “Samsonov: The Sequel” written all over it.
And I also have a problem with someone actually on the team. As much respect I have for Koivu and what he’s been through, if he doesn’t want to be around during “constant rebuilding” then by all means I’m for dealing Hookvu and his contract at the next trade deadline for more picks.
Maybe give Ferguson a call, see if he has any first round picks in 2008 left.
I was very unhappy with Koivu after his play went into the toilet the last 40 games (albiet after a stellar first half of the season) and his constant, selfish parade to the penalty box in key times for the laziest of penalties: hooking.
Hey buddy, did you get the memo about this new-fangled NHL where they actually call hooking and holding? Do us all a favour before Oct. 1, 2007 and speed read it.
Then, after submarining the team with dumb penalty call after dumb penalty call - usually in the third period of close games - he ultimately ended up failing as Captain to drag his slovenly teammates into the playoffs kicking and screaming, he slams the front office for their policies.
Not impressive.
And I consider myself a fan of Koivu’s. I think he’s probably a great human being and a good role model - but that stuff really pissed me off.
I can’t see Jean Beliveau pulling a selfish move like that after he had failed to make the playoffs. You should be looking in the mirror, not pointing fingers - ESPECIALLY AS CAPTAIN OF THE MONTREAL CANADIENS.
As we will no doubt see over the next 10 years, the only real way to guarantee wins and playoff trips consistently in a Salary Cap structure is to draft well, indoctrinate them into your teams philosophy and plug them into the NHL a few years down the road. So, even though I really want to see them get a big centreman to anchor that first line, I also like the fact that the front office is sticking to their guns about building through the draft.
Basically the team is not listening to me, a dedicated fan, and what I want them to do - go out and throw away picks for some centerman. That’s probably a good thing..

You dont just sign a guy cause he is from Quebec get a clue.. you try and find the best player no matter what his name is or where he comes from, I think the Habs got a coupkle of good picks and I hope to see them in the NHL sometime soon.

Hi all!….I’m back….miss me? I have not dropped a note because I have been stewing over the events(or lack thereof)of the draft weekend. Still blows my mind that Montreals’ only move was to trade Michael Let-em-in. But I guess if the pretty girls don’t want to dance then what can you do eh?
First things first……I agree that you don’t draft someone because they have a french name…..no issues here….but for all you nay sayers….take all the french-canadian players in the league currently, place them all on the Habs and I think that you may see a Montreal stanley cup almost every year!! I know, I know, not realistic but it does prove the point that if Montreal had all french-canadian players we would probably see a overall better hockey team.
Besides, ask yourself this…..Russians like Kovy/Sammy or frenchman like Lecavalier/Tanguay? Easy answer.
I am all for building for tommorrow through the draft but lets not forget about today. It seems that is what has been happening the last 2-3 years. The Habs definitely need some marquis french players to settle the natives like Briere(although too small), Lecavalier, Tanguay, Marleau(I know…not french but sounds like it..LOL).
As for Koivu…..I have always compared him with Mats Naslund….would’ve been a star on any other team but got stuck on the “defence-first” Canadiens. I feel for the guy…he wants a chance(minimum)at the cup and management doesn’t seem to want the same thing right now.(hey, actions speak louder than words!)
I hope he gets one!
Anyhow….heres hopin. that this coming year sees a much improved Montreal squad!
GO HABS GO!

Well the draft came and went and in three years everyone will marvel at Gaineys selections. I don’t know enough about these two American defensmen two even make a comment on them but look what Gainey’s track record at the draft. The Carey Price pick could prove to be unbelievable. The NHL CBA and along with revenue sharing and salary cap has taken away the opportunity for clubs in big markets to go buy a team of allstars and walk into the cup finals. It’s no longer a case of opening the vault the emphasis now is on getting the best bang for the buck. Obviously no one knows Gainey’d ultimite plan except for Bob Gainey, but lets all think back to his Dallas Stars days. He walked in with a plan, exicuted it, and yes it took a little time but the results speak for themselves. Even being a life long Habs fan I still have to be realistic… the world will not turn upside down and we will not win the cup next year. Having said that I do believe the ground work Gainey has already laid spotting up and coming talent as well as his respect in the game of hockey will enable him to sign one or two big free agents immediatly so he can dump so dead wood and compete for a cup in the next three years.

I loved the Habs picks. I am glad that they didn’t go after Espo. He is too small and I am a little tired of the Habs have players that are too small and don’t go into the corners. They have lots of guys in the minors with offensive skill and they have guys on the current team that are already scoring. Now just need to build around these guys. Ryan McDonagh was blowing all the GM’s away with his interviews and his test at the combines. There is something to say about a guy like that, let alone a defenceman. The Habs are setting themselves up for a bright future. Bob Gainey is one of the smartest people in hockey. Hey, at least we have draft picks to select new young talent to build around. Not like the Leafs. Pacioretty is another good pick. The USHL is becoming a top league in North America and is tough to score in. This kid had 63 points in 60 games. Pretty good for a guy who had a bad first half of the season.
We have some talent that will come up this year and we have some money to get a top 4 defenceman and a top forward. Next season is gonna be a great year. IN BOB WE TRUST.

The habs use to get all the rgihts to anyone french, hence why they had success with french players over the years. I’m not disputing french Canadians overall maybe more valuable then these Russians.
That wasn’t my point. You draft the best player regardless of his primary language. I don’t believe Quebecers deserve a french superstar because hes french. He’s there to play hockey. So i’ll take a superstar of french or english. I just want a superstar period.
The draft by Gainey this year was outstanding. McDonagh is a stud. Esposito is Daigle all over again. There’s reasons the 1st 19 teams took a pass.
We need a nunber 1 centre we can’t get through the draft, Marleau or Briere. Lets go Bob. The rest we can move through our own system.

We dont need someone just because he is french, we need someone who is good. I think we will be fine, I like the way the team is starting to take shape, I am not saying we should not have french canadian players, I am saying we need to take the best players at the time, and not make any choices that involve anything except hockey…

Actually, I remember just after the habs won the cup, heck, we had some pretty good drafts, and management made the mistake of believing the rookies could dig them outta some pretty old very expensive contracts that were not panning out…hmmmm….hey, we may not have won a cup but we sure as heck celebrated like we did when we were given Gainey and Carbo….
Then the mistakes of getting…Richer….Stevenson….the same rookie coach mistakes of juggling lines…getting all star rookie minor league winner goalies….tall skinny defense….oh the horror! We are repeating the middle nineties all over again! Complete with praise for drafting what looks like winners and movers and shakers…heck we even drafted the Mr.Hockey of Minnesota in those years too!
What the Habs management did not do was bring good veterans in, that is in the few years after the cup…right up to now. We have had great rookies! They have gone on to other teams with cups! Yet, we didn’t get any cups with them!
I still say we can salvage this, this was a great draft year! Probably one of the best the habs have had in a decade! Way to Go Crazy Bob! You have renewed my faith in the future.
For now the present still doesn’t look too promising, complete with not finding a defenseman to protect Price properly. But I too can’t wait to see both Subban and Price and Petrecky! If we can keep Grabby, Laps, Lats and heck Subban and Milroy giving them heck, we can even see the cup again! Yes!
All we need is someone like Nedermeyer, maybe he’d be willing to guide our young rookies to a cup here and retire! Wouldn’t that be great?

I have heard a few of you mention Petrecki…..he was not drafted by the Habs folks!! Would have been nice if he was but you need to get your facts straight before talkin it up!!! Petrecki was taken by the Sharks!!
I still think that too many denfenceman were drafted…we needed a big forward like Gillies. I don’t know…..I just hope…………………………

I think the canadiens should go after Tanguay. He would be great with Montreal. I think this draft was a boom man! Good stuff all around!
Everyone on this site needs to leave joshtm alone. He has some valid points himself.
I love life dudes and I love my MONTREAL CANADIENS!!! ROCK ON HABYDUDAS!!

Not sure what the crying is about not having French Superstar. The reason we do not have a LeCavalier, Crosby, Tanguay, Staal BLa Bla ect.. is that we were not bottom dwellers when these guys were in the draft. These guys were top draft picks in their respected time and we had no chance of getting them. It is as simple as that. When we had our chance to get a superstar with a top pick BOB chose Price. Time will tell but he’s living up to his expectations so far. Obviously, Gainey belives in him by building a top notch D around him in this years draft and last as well. Superstars become the face of their respective organizations and given long expensive contracts to stay with their clubs. I think the New NHL will allow more and more of these guys to be freed up and truely believe we’ll see a LeCavalier type player, if we do not tie up too much money in the mean-time, will become available.
THE BEST PLAYER AT THE GIVEN TIME FOR THE NEEDS OF THE “TEAM” is key to drafting. Although Cherepanov sort of got a raw deal because of comrads actions in the past and Montreal was not going after a Offensive player with their first pick anyway, we got what we needed a future top D-man.
As for stars this years cup winners and runner-ups had a few that were not Quebecois; Selanne, McDonald, Neidemayer(s), Pronger, Penner, Perry, Heatly, Spezza, Alfredson, Fisher, BLa BLa Bla. Point is it takes a mix of players, even if it would be nice to have a local kid in which to identify. we have a good mix and a influx of prospects… There is no need to add more assets that we have an excess in the system. Corey Locke, D’Agostini, Pleckanic, Koivu, all seemed to have the same characteristics as an Esposito and would have been overlap in the organization which probably would have left him on the sidelines especially in the Habs Defensive minded stlye and coaching staff.

The Habs need to be active this summer in the free agent market otherwise Koivu will not be here after the season. Gainey said he was going to be active last summer and wasn’t. He went after Samsonov but that was only because he was trying to make it up to us because he did not make any significant moves and he thought Samsonov would thrive here. He was the biggest bust of all-time and I hope Samso goes and fucks himself because he is a piece of shit!! I hate that loser. Gainey needs to make it up to us otherwise I will be pissed off as will most other Habs fans. I want action this summer. Lates,

I’m sorry but I got to say this . The Montreal Canadiens play in the Provence of Quebec ;a French province in a Canadian Confederation . Now as far as the Habs go the last French Superstar was Patrick Roy,a long time ago!! Only bone-heads can’t recognize the importance of a Francophone Hockey hero, whether front office or Anglophone fan! Please don’t make me have to spell it out for you all, cause its a NO BRAINER !!!jUST THINK OF ALL THE GREAT FRENCH HOCKEY PLAYERS THAT HAVE NOT PLAYED FOR THE hABS .When the Nordics were in Quebec city it wasn’t an issue ,but that also was a long time ago .Hockey is a business and our team has suffered poor decision making since 1993 and when I see a simple problem not being addressed it gives me reason for great concern !!!! Will somebody get fucking real for fuck sakes!!!!!

An interesting point of view my good friend Xhabsfan!! I love your passion!
Hey all…take heed….I just was looking over the Habs draft history on their site and guess what I found out……..since 1990 Montreal has drafted 22 USHL players(not including this year)and guess how many have actually made it to the NHL???? Come on, come on, you can do it………ready……..2!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes….I said 2…Craig Conroy and Craig Darby from 1990! OH OH! Not a very good ratio here!!! OH OH!!!
I am not so confident in our draft picks the past 2 years now!!! OH OH!!
I guess we can always hope this is a trend that ends sooner rather than later!
phew……I just don’t know what to think.
P.S.
Bob has stated publicly that Souray is his top priority…he wants him signed……I like Souray but not his league worst -28 last year, 64 points or not!….rumour is Souray wants Markov money and I thinks he gets it…too bad when we could go after Scott Hannan who was a +1 with 24 pts. Not glamourous but solid anyhow!
Hannan is 6′1 225lbs and is only 28!! I’m drooling. He would be an awsome addition to the blueline. Better than Souray.
Listen BOB….use that head of yours that won you all those cups and awards over your career!!!
Go Les habitants!!!!!

xhabsfan I don’t give a shit what you think the habs deserve because they ply in Quebec a french province. If the best player is English you take him, simple as. Blow it out your ass, go cheer for the nordiques if you want a bunch of french Canadians, oh wait, that franchise went down the toilet because of ridiculous thinking you guys have. Don’t bring that garbage to the habs plz, you ruined your franchise, leave us alone. Rejean Houle and past french regimes almost buried this franchise. I’ll stick with my tough engish canadians rather then you french visor wearing pansies.

It’s easy to see what Gainey’s thinking. in goal Carey Price,on D Emelin and Komisarek,up front,Chipchura,Latendresse and CRISTOPHER HIGGINS! The habs are starting in Goal(already done-Price,Halak,Dannis etc.) Going defence -David Fischer, Emelin, Komisarek etc. and then going forward(HIGGINS,Latendresse,Chipchura etc. they have the 2nd Best future in the league(I think 1st) don’t make fun of Gainey.) If you’re mad about the habs not in playoffs 07, don’t blame Gainey, Kovalev got 47 points, Samsonov 26!!! Kovalev should get at least 60 PTS and samsonov-at least 55. so theirs 50 PTS. I thick 50 more goals for montreal would have been a playoff appearence.
