Canadiens sign Tom Kostopolous

Tom Kostopoulous

When it looked like it was all said and done Bob Gainey signed Right Winger Tom Kostopolous from the Los Angeles Kings.

Kostopoulos’ career numbers.

These are rmarks from the habs website: regarding Kostopoulos
Note: This signing surprises me, as I would be tremendously stunned to see Kostopoulos making the team out of training camp, with guys like Mark Streit, Andrei Kostitsyn, Kyle Chipchura competing seriously.

Gainey had US$2 million to spend on a replacement for Mike Johnson, and has wasted half of it on a career 4th line/reserve player. Instead of putting convincing offers on the table for guys like Glen Metropolit, Jeff O’Neill… he gave up, and signed a “10 point a season” guy.
Nice going Gainey! missed the boat again!

You guys don’t get it. As long as they continue to sell out the Bell there is no incentive for Gillette to throw a lot of money at this team. As long as we are content to spend money and go watch a mediocre team, that’s what we’ll get. To Gillette it’s a business and nothing more. He will sell out the Bell whether we have Yashin or Kostopolous.

Are the Gainey apologists feeling good now? Isn’t it clear that he’s a terrible GM? What’s the plan? Does he think that if he moves the Bulldogs up to the NHL that they’ll win the cup?

It is going to be a long, long season and a 5th place finish…in the Northeast Division.

Nice signing by Gainey…..Kotsopolus will replace Murray/Downey on the fourth line and you may see a fourth line of Lapierre/Begin/Kotsopolus. Kots brings
grit, responsible defensive play, will drop the gloves and will put up some
points as well 7g 15 a 22pts last year and a -2 on a terrible Kings team. He is
a tenacious forechecker and backchecker and apparently is a great team player
who will go to the wall for his team mates. This team lacked this type of player last year….and he definetely is an upgrade for the fourth line. You need all types of players to make a team go and this is a step up in the right
direction….trust me you guys will love this player when you see the way he plays.

In the few games I saw Krusty play, he usually shows up one in three games, scores once in every ten games….I guess given that Kovalev and Markov show up every other game, heck, if we can get a decent game every few games I guess it is worth it after all. My only hope is Gainey doesn’t put too much faith in this bunch and will not reassign the rookies down. When Gainey has a chance to replace the vacancies with rookies, he’s not doing that now. Which means what, another season of yanking the rookies back and forth and watching the habs win when the rookies are here, and watching the mediocre used up European players put us into another slump!

The Habs main problem last year was that they had no heart and soul players who just give it there all every game. The fourth line guys generally don’t have alot of talent, they aren’t supposed to. This guy has loads of heart. This is EXACTLY WHAT THEY NEED!

They have enough talent on the first three lines, the fourth is for grinders with minimal talent and size. That’s what the Ducks had. And what did you expect Gainey to do with 2-3 million to spend? Trade a fourth round pick to T-Bay for Lecavelier?

Habs#1 is right… a lot of heart comes with Tommy K. I look forward to watching him playing with Begin. What a great work ethic our 4th line will have! With Tommy finishing at a -2 last season…sparkling I’d say, considering the year the Kings had. Good tinkering indeed! I along with Stuart-SB77 believe however, that there will probably be one more new face yet to surface in a Habs jersey. Who you ask… I am at a loss.

Everyone knows that Tom K. will not have a 30 goal season, but look at it this way last player we got from LA turned out to save our 05-06 season and make the playoffs (Huet)… And for signing a big name, no one wants to play for us…Briere was offered 55 million and declined, so we will have to build our rookies and try to have some veterans help them develop fast, whom gainey already signed… We are the fans and a true fan will support their team and their GM threw the hard times…

      Possibilites are:

      1)Lecavalier
      2)Marleau
      3)Richards
      4)Selanne
…) many more to be figured out

*I see Marleau comming to this team and it makes perfect sense. Some of you guys may think it’s completely ridiculous and some may not

      That’s how it goes:

      To Montreal:
      -Marleau
      -Someone else

      To San Jose:
      -Koivu
      -Someone else

Let me explain why it makes sense:

-Koivu’s last and true friend left in the team was Craig Rivet who agrred to a 2 year contract wioth Sharks.

-Craig Rivet, himself stated how much San Jose was a better team than Habs, how the fans were loyal and much more faithful, how good the weather was and etc to the MEDIA. IMAGINE WHAT HE SAID MTO KOIVU!!!!!!!!!

-Koivu stated for the first time of his career that he was ready to be traded if the team rebuilds meaning he doesn’t have the love he had for this organization, fans and management anymore.

-marleau might wanna play for a team that cries for its service

      What do you guys think?

Oh ya, that was worth 112500 per goal, big bucks for doing nothing, he doesn’t even win that many face-offs, and he’s supposed to replace both Bonk and Souray! At least Bonk won more faceoffs than he lost, Krusty the Clown only shows up one game in ten, that is on the scoreboard….and Smolinsky, not that great with the stats either now….and Hammerlink there, for this bunch we gave up Bonk and Souray? that is just pathetic! Two players with more stats between the two than for all the stats that Gainey signed with recently…heck Gainey could sign more players and they wouldn’t come close to Souray’s stats!

Anyway I don’t think the habs will do anything else, can’t see them making a trade, can’t see them trying anything surprising, seems like we are in for another grinding year, sigh.. Its not like Bob did not try and keep souray, or get smyth or briere, he just couldn’t. No one wants to come to montreal and it’s not because of the media or bob gainey or carbo, it’s because everyone can tell the team is a average club thats gonna stay around 7th to 11th place. No veteran players want to sign with a team that had no chance at a cup in the next few years. We are just going to have to wait for our rookies to develop.. Plus free agency is bullshit anyway, overpaying players, thats all its good for.. No matter what I’m gonna cheer my ass off for this club… If we get really bad we can always do what the pens did… become really shitty for 8 years or so then get unreal drafts and now they’re a good club.. I don’t think Joshtm could handle that though, might take the lid off his sippy cup and throw his orange juice all over and rant.. fucking annoying

RBK … Briere signed with the last place team in the league last season, so I don’t think his reason for going there had anything to do with the Habs standings. I agree that we should just trade Koivu, trade Kovalev, bring in the rookies, be last place for 8 years, draft the best players, and become like anaheim or the senators … or like the penguins are going to be in 5 years. Unfortunately, you’re right… most fans and the media don’t have the patience for a last place team for 8 years so we’re stuck with a mediocre team for 14…

chevy … There is no mention anywhere of Souray signing with anyone, although I doubt we have the cap room to sign him anymore after that huge contract to Hamrlik. God, I hope he’s worth that money because he’s being paid more than Regehr.

I’ll vouch for Joshtm–he never slagged Bonk that I recall, he actually had positive things to say about him.

As for Kostopolous, I don’t recall ever having seen him play, so I can’t really comment on what he does or doesn’t bring to the table. I’ll save that for the regular season, when I can see for myself, but I hope that those of you who have praised his tenacious playing style are right about him. We certainly need players with heart on the team.

I’m having mixed emotions about the failure to land some of the big name guys, mostly due to the staggerring piles of dough they were given, and the ridiculous length of the contracts. I’ve been all over Kovalev for years now, and yet, at the prices some of these UFA stiffs have signed for, he doesn’t actually look like that poor of a bargain right now.

Take Lang. He got $4 mil for 2 yrs after a 52 point season, a whopping 5 points more than Kovalev. Handzus, who has never done anything, got a 4 year deal worth $16 mil for an 8 point year, and his career season was 58 points a few years back. Hell, Kyle Calder, a bust everywhere he has gone, got $2.75 mil for 2 years. The market is way out of whack when the so-called premiere free agent gets a 7 year deal worth $51 mil after an “epic” 13 goal, 60 point campaign.

I guess if I’m happy about anything, it’s that we signed Kovalev 2 years ago, before this off season’s resumption of head scratching fiscal insanity. He probably would’ve gotten a 6 year, $38 mil contract this off season…

What was the point of the lockout? The only reason the cap has jumped so much is that the owners are bleeding the fans at every turn. Fans like us. It certainly isn’t the Panthers’ vast fanbase, for example. The Canadian teams are carrying this league, and in a weird way, we are to blame for the salary cap increase.

Yeah, that’s oversimplifying, I realize, but without the likes of the Habs, Leafs, Flames, and Oilers selling out every game, how then is the revenue going up to this degree? It isn’t due to Nashville’s 29 fans, not due to Carolina’s less than impressive fan base, and Wang has left his once proud franchise struggling to sell upwards of 14000 tickets per game. Just a few examples, I could go on.

Just read we signed Jamie Rivers to a 2 year deal. I’ll file that on under–WHO?

      Garrgh!

Posted on July 5th, 2007 at 9:57 pm. About 'Canadiens sign Tom Kostopolous'.

The greatest acquisition Gainey made is Rivers. Even though he is rated an underachiever, given his speed, and matching him up with Koivu, and the rest of the rookies, should make up for the loss of Souray. He may not have weight, but good on a power play, not as a scorer though. Should make for exciting fast hockey, although a bit of disappointment, in that he is small in weight, and can’t protect the goalie worth anything. If Price makes it, count on Price to get injured at the hands of both Markov and Rivers…..it is too bad Gainey didn’t get rid of the biggest liability in defense, Bouillon and Dandenault…..Gainey went cheap, spent the payroll to keep Markov and punished Souray by signing Hamrlik. That was Gainey’s worst move or the second worst move after signing Samsonov…..what a disappointment Hamrlik will be.

Where were you Habsfanforlife? Excuse me, last season all we saw was the duo of Dandenault and Bouillon get scored on time after time. Dandenault a better defenseman that Souray? Souray at his worst at least kept the net clear, what did Dandenault do? Compete with Markov to see who between the two would injure Huet…..

At least I do my research, like Degon, ranked 213 overall, man that just sucks. And Hamrlik’s total goals? some 900 some odd games and he scores what, the total number of goals Souray did last year….and that is Hamrliks total NHL career, some seven or eight years! That is pathetic! And Smolinski? Supposed to be a forward? Scores every seven games, every ten games at his worst? Honestly….those stats are just horrible! How come Gainey only signs minor league players? Is it because he thinks the habs look like a minor league team? He would be right. this is a bush league team, and none of them belong in the NHL. Gainey’s problem, is that he’s way too conservative, not willing to take a risk. He needs to be more like Holmgren.
Now there’s a shrewd and gutsy GM! bring him to Montreal. He who hesitates, is lost! Gainey looks like a lost confused GM, bent at making this team worse.
He can’t even make a decent trade! when did he ever make a trade to get us a goal scorer? N E V E R !

Listen up joshtm…some good points here for ya!!

This person actually knows what they are talking about!! Read and learn jack-ass!!

Bob Gainey finally pulled the trigger on Monday by signing UFAs Roman Hamrlik and Bryan Smolinski to contracts. The Canadiens were unable to sign the big name UFAs like Daniel Briere, Scott Gomez or Ryan Smyth but it wasn’t from a lack of effort. Numerous reliable sources (including the players and agents involved in the process) stated that Montreal had made very attractive offers and were in the running right up to the end. Briere was allegedly offered a 6 year/$42 million while Smyth was supposedly offered a 5 year/$32.5 million. Both contract offers were allegedly more money annually than what Philadelphia and Colorado had given them.
As Habs fans, we can all speculate and debate the reasons why these players went elsewhere: higher taxes, constant media pressure, non playoff contender or language issues to name a few. The media have already started the “blame game” and are unfairly criticizing the Montreal Canadiens for not landing these players (especially Daniel Briere). Some media outlets have even questioned why Bob Gainey, Pierre Bovin or George Gillett did not travel to Los Angeles to hand deliver the contract offer and persuade Mr. Briere to sign with the Habs. Can you imagine Gainey leaving his office at the Bell Center and abandoning negotiations for other UFAs to attract one player.
Thank god, Bob Gainey has the courage and for a lack of a better word, BALLS!!! to stand his ground so as not to be persuaded by our wonderful local media “experts”. The Ronald Corey and Rejean Houle era has come and gone when it was common practice for the french media to influence their decision making process (Patrick Roy would have retired as a Hab if cooler heads had prevailed and management had settled things down).
Yes, Gainey did not land the “big fish” UFAs but the additions of Hamrlik, Smolinski and to a lesser degree, Tom Kostopoulos have improved the team. Roman Hamrlik is a better all round defenseman than Sheldon Souray and will provide much better defensive zone/one on one coverage. Hamrlik won’t score 26 goals next season but neither will Souray who had a career season offensively. When you factor in the plus/minus and goals scored stats, then Souray is a-2(26 goals and -28) while Hamrlik is a + 29 (7 goals and +22). A bit simplistic but at the same time rather revealing don’t you think!! Hamrlik will also help tutor young prospects like Ryan O’Bryne or Pavel Valentenko when/if they make the Habs roster. He was credited with helping develop Dion Phaneuf in Calgary so Hamrlik has some successful experience in this area.
Bryan Smolinski will not be as good a shutdown center as Radek Bonk but he will provide more offensive punch. Smolinski is a better face off guy and even at 35 years old, he is still a better skater than Bonk. I think Maxim Lapierre will be the shut down center while Koivu, Smolinski and Plekanec will center the more offensive lines. Tom Kostopoulos will provide more grit and bring a solid effort every game. He is very strong along the boards and is a good skater who will improve the 3rd and/or 4th lines (will replace Mike Johnson).

In the end, there will always be critics who will have something negative to say no matter what is done to improve the team. If Bob Gainey would have signed Daniel Briere or Ryan Smyth, there would have been criticism that the player was paid too much and his salary would cripple the team’s financial ability to add other players to the roster. Let’s take a step back and take a deep breath (especially the media) while Mr. Gainey continues to improve the team with the recent additions as well as giving some of the younger players a chance to shine.

Wow, this kid could be a steal of a deal!!

Beauregard scored 71 goals in 69 games in the Q last season so he knows where the net is. He is on the small size (5′11″ 185lbs) but has an excellent shot with good wheels. He went undrafted three years ago as he was injured most of his draft eligible year. See below sites for more information and video:

After reading Dave Molinari article, you certainly get the impression Sydney Crosby wants to please his teammates, the Penguins organization, fans and the NHLPA. As a Habs fan, I will be selfish and hope he only signs an extension of 3-4 years at the most (I can still dream of Syd the Kid in a Habs uniform). I’d love to see him become a UFA at the tender age of 25 years old and so would the NHLPA. Crosby has always said that his favorite team growing up was the Montreal Canadiens and he stated while watching the 2005 draft lottery on TV, how anxious he was as the Canadiens got closer to the 1st overall selection (they got the #5 pick which they used to select Carey Price).
The NHLPA will make sure that Crosby’s agent, Pat Brisson signs for the maximum allowable amount and doesn’t give too much of a hometown discount to the Penguins. Mario Lemieux and GM Ray Shero would love to sign Crosby to a 8-10 year deal but with the ever increasing salary cap and spiralling player salaries, it would not make economical sense for Sydney Crosby or the NHLPA to commit to such a contract. The negotiations will be interesting to watch and all habs fans will still be dreaming of the “Syd the Man” donning the bleu, blanc et rouge one day!!!!

What kind of player is Tom Kostopoulos? Think a younger Mike Johnson with a smaller paycheque and a bit of an edge.

“I’m basically a defensive player who can chip in with some offence now and then,” Kostopoulos said yesterday after signing a two-year contract with the Canadiens for $900,000 (U.S.) a season.

The 6-foot, 201-pounder said he is used to playing on the third line against the opposition’s top line. That’s the role the 28-year-old right-winger has played the past two seasons with the Los Angeles Kings. Kostopoulos had seven goals and 15 assists in 76 games last season.

“There were a couple of teams which showed interest in me, but when my agent told me that Montreal was interested, that’s where I wanted to go. I grew up near Toronto and I know all about the rivalry between the Canadians and the Leafs,” Kostopoulos said from his offseason home in Oakville, Ont.

He said he didn’t know any of the current Canadiens, but it shouldn’t take long for them to know him. He admitted that he has a reputation for being a practical joker who “likes to keep things loose in the room.” “I did talk to some guys who used to play there, Mathieu Garon and Jason Ward, and they had nothing but good things to say about Montreal,” Kostopoulos said.

While he’s not the Quebecois some folks have been clamouring for, Kostopoulos said he and his wife are looking forward to trying out their French in Montreal.

“My wife went through French immersion all the way through high school and minored in French in university,” Kostopoulos said.

“I took French immersion through Grade 8. We’ll be brushing up this summer.”

While he’s not a heavyweight, Kostopoulos will drop the gloves.

“I’ll stand up for my teammates,” said Kostopoulos, who was involved in nine fights last season, although www.hockeyfights.com reported that he lost most of them.

The addition of Kostopoulos gives the team 18 players under contract with a cap hit of about $39.5 million. GM Bob Gainey still has to negotiate with restricted free-agents Michael Ryder, who earned $2.2 million last season, and Tomas Plekanec and Josh Gorges, who each earned the minimum $450,000.

I heard that Bettman was considering waiving the rules regarding equipment, to allow Sakku Koivu and Roman Hamrlik use their walkers on the ice, and an additional waiver for Sakku to use his seeing eye cane and german shepard…maybe that way instead of hooking players Sakku could actually play hockey!!!

Hey Bob, instead of water bottles, the Habs are gonna be giving out Ensure to half of the team during the game!

I feel sorry for the Habs trainer, he’s gotta get those adult pampers for Sakku and Roman!

I also heard Gary Bettman is considering hiring a researcher so Bryan and Tom there, the other old age pensioners that Bob Gainey hired, hiring a researcher to find out ways in which they can transfer their social security cheques to Canada…..

There was a replay on the old CBC HNIC black and whites, and Sakku, Tom, Bryan and Roman all looked old in those too! I think half of the Habs were born just after they invented electricity!

Man, the NHL is considering making the nets larger just for Sakku’s behalf! That’s cause Sakku’s so old he can’t see for trying.

I also heard Gary Bettman is considering waiving the hockey stick rule for the habs forwards, seems on top of getting larger lighter pucks, they are considering allowing Roman, Tom, Bryan and Sakku to be allowed to use Goalie sticks in the hopes that the bigger blade will allow them to actually pass the puck!

I have never seen such a wide range of players, one side of the bench is the old folks home for retired worn out used up broken down veterans in pampers and the other side are for Tim Bits players who are still in potty training!

Man is that sad or what?

And you know what is even funnier? There are fans out there who think Bob is Hockey God cause he can find a way to still allow old folkies to still play hockey and on the flip side, be a walking talking ad for Tim Bits peewee hockey!!!!HAHAHAAAA!!!!!

Man, at least Gainey is giving Roman the golden parachute like he’s doing for Sakku!

The Habs, where old used worn out veterans come to play, and where the GM and brown nosing fans blame the media and fans for the despicable play of the old veterans!

Honestly! Blaming the media for worn out old used players who are past their prime? Are we all that stupid or what?

man It looks like the team last year. Kostoboulos will get 25-29 points(samsonov) Smolinski will get 40-50 points(johnson,Bonk), now if kostoboulos gets less than 15 and smolinski gets less than 20 pts, were screwed because we cannot have another screw up. It’s up to higgins to get out of the 30 pt area and become who he is- a 60-70 point getter, Ryder get as much as he did his 1st season, Koivu stay the same u did amazing last year, Kovalev(oohhh boy) u have to get at least 65 points to prove ur shelf again, age might be getting at u but get out of ur slump. Latendresse will have a great season around 50 pts, kostitsyn bros. Andre should get at least 25 pts, while sergei should get at least 18 pts.(if they get a chance.)Grabovski(if he gets achance) should get around 20 pts. Chipchura should get at least 15 pts. This year we had lots of $$ to spend( hamrlik,Smolinski,Kostoboulos)-good GM=(Briere,Zubrus,Souray).(loosing team= priceless.

It is pathetic, today Gainey is now drafting 11 and 12 year olds at the end of today, he is going to use the rest of the salary cap to sign the best of today’s Habs day camp for kids to long term contracts in the hopes that one of them won’t grow beyond 6feet 1 or 200 pounds and if possible to be shorter than 6 feet and weigh just above 187 pounds but no more. I really do hope that the Oilers offer Ryder a real whooper of an offer sheet now that they’ve missed out on Vanek. Ryder is the most one dimensional player I’ve seen in years. He can shoot. That’s it. Not a good skater, doesn’t hit, has no heart, is soft, can’t pass and isn’t very smart with the puck.

And next years draft is supposedly as good as 2003 which was the draft that produced most of the good young players in the league today(Horton, Staal, Vanek, Perry, Getzlaf, Suter, Phaneuf, Seabrook, Mihaclek, Bernier, etc.). And even with Ryder the Oilers would suck so the Habs would be getting a possible top 5 pick in an extremely deep draft. So go for it K-Lowe, please make my day!

I.ve read so many blogs on the habs in the last couple of days and no one seems to realize that the Habs have one of the best group of upcomming player in the league. Bob has done a great job of keeping and aquiring draft picks. In this day of age where any good player requests insane amounts of money to play anywhere, the only way to win a cupm and to have a deap team is to draft your way up (Look at Anaheim). And another point I thought I would hear is that Lecavalier will be a UFA next season, now I may be dissapointed but I think the Habs will go all out to sign this guy and he is way more of a pillar to any team than DB. You wait and see, Bob has somthing u all don’t Patience and Vision.

Joshtm are you even a fan of the habs? I mean you don’t like the team and you don’t like the players, and then you say you’re a die hard fan because you think they suck and want to get rid of everyone for a good team. I say FUCK that you retard, a die hard fan sticks with the team no matter what. I’m not saying you can’t criticize the GM, but to say all our players are shit and he is dumb is just plain retarded. I would love to see you as our GM, I mean you do seem to think you have more hockey knowledge then Bob Gainey. Hell you should be our coach too seeing how you think you can out coach Carbo. Xhabsfan can be your assistant, god only knows what you two would be doing in the locker room.

First off this team is better then the last couple of years, I mean was I the only one that was horribly embarrassed when Spezza literally walked around Souray and sniped only to celebrate while Souray was picking his jock strap off the ice, or how about Souray’s constant giveaways in his own end. Souray can score a lot of goals with his shot, what do you think they say about Hammer, the guy has a blistering shot and easily anyone can see that he has a better defensive side. I think that makes him perfect for our powerplay because he can shoot and yet still is able to prevent giving up shorties. Smolinksi is a gritty player that knows how to score. He has a veteran ability so can help out rookies like Lapierre who seems to be following in the ways of a gritty in-your-face type of player. Clearly we have amazing young talent, which so far Bob Gainey has kept around and clearly will not give them away for nothing. Josh if you think the Habs are old and shitty why do you still cheer for them. Go fuck off and cheer for Pittsburg or something and when they can’t afford all their players anymore you can start bashing them. If our team needs rebuilding, we are already almost there, when you rebuild a team you need two things, rookie talent (we have shitloads of it) and a veteran presence(seems like Josh thinks we have a lot of that) so it looks to me like it’s a pretty damn good time to be a Habs Fan.

Now you’re going to post another reply and you’ll be ranting and annoying as hell with stupid fuck’n names and retarted things to say. Hell you probably won’t even talk about hockey, you’ll just rant and hope that sometime soon Xhabsfan will say something like “Joshtm is right and I wanna suck his cock..

How the hell am I a “wannabee”?
But seriously,…young unproven talent?… Isn’t that what every rookie is. Did anyone have a doubt that Crosby wouldn’t perform in the NHL.. I think not, anyone who is around the game can tell who is gonna make it somewhere and who isn’t. Especially GM’s and NHL Scouts… THATS WHAT THEY GET PAID FOR! What do you think the Hab’s establishement was made by drawing names from a hat! NO! Use your heads, xhabsfan and joshtm, you guys think you can do a better job with the team! Honestly guys, if you could do something better then you wouldn’t be here typing on this blog would you now.. get real. And to say we have no veteran smarts is ridiculous, these guys play internationally, professionally and everything in between. Hammer has helped develope the soon to be best d-man in the league in a guy named Dion Phaneuf. And as much as I and everyone else despises Kovalev, he is always on the bench giving advice because he has an extreme knowledge of the game. Koviu too!
But this doesn’t mean anything because the Habs will not have to break everything down and rebuild. Where already almost there.. We are gonna have a good team this year, and even if we don’t, I’ll still be there cheering my ass off every game, and thats what makes a fan, not a guy who as soon as something goes wrong starts to cry and blame the GM or the coach or everything else that can be blamed, because blaming and crying is easy to do.. Xhabsfan and Joshtm might as well be leafs fans because all they do is cry, isn’t that what the tm stands for anyway josh?.

I think we will make the playoffs, and even if they don’t doesn’t mean I’m going to start blaming everyone from the GM to the stick boy. And if Markov is so bad maybe you should suit up Xhabsfan. You sure seem to know how much everyone else sucks. You and Joshtm must be Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemiux. Because you guys talk like your the best players ever. Maybe we should just get rid of markov, if he is as bad as you say he is. I mean clearly he is one of if not the best player for the habs. Its not all about points sometimes. If Steve fuckin Wonder can tell who is gonna make the playoffs and who isn’t why do we even have a regular season, Why don’t we just have PLayoffs and he can pick the teams who are in? All you do Xhabsfan is say stupid shit with no back-up and no real meaning or point. I mean look at your last comment. What point are you trying to proove? That our team isn’t as good as in 1993? Hey RBK you suck big time don’t you know that? Honestly, if there is anyone who should be asking “are you a fan” is us of you! Honestly, when Gainey makes really Sheety moves like he has, after the horrible up and down season we had, and you praise him for delivering us to a spot just short of a playoff spot and then to be shut out by all people, the worst teams in the league? When we can’t even beat the worst team in the league to guarantee a playoff spot and then have the salt rubbed into the wound by the Laffs? And you thought Gainey was a “God” because of that?

When the whole city was asking “what is with this Gainey fellow” when he wouldn’t take advantage last year of being able to trade, and then just before the playoffs when he didn’t, and then this past summer when he kicked Souray out but kept deadwood like Dandenault and Bouillon?

And because we are pissed at Bob Gainey’s lousy leadership, as true Habs fans who like to see winners, you question us? You are a real MORON RBK DO YOU KNOW THAT? Asking if we are fans…honestly.

Are you totally out to lunch? Are you devoid of common sense? What Gainey gives you free batteries for your dildo and free vaseline and the only question you ask him is “how far down do I bend Mr. Gainey”….

Let’s get back the real issues here. Gainey is chasing out the high scorers, he is letting Souray go. He penny and dime-ing Ryder to death. All the while Gainey spends big money on players who can’t even score but one every ten games or so! And you love the man for that? Bringing us a gang of has beens?

Posted on July 7th, 2007 at 8:48 pm. About 'Canadiens sign Tom Kostopolous'.

Joshtm are you serious.. If you will look back in my posts I have agreed with you a countless number of times saying Gainey has made some really bad moves and never once praised him. I don’t like what Gainey has done this free agency but I DO like what has not done with our rookie talent. I ask you why go out and spend 50 million dollars for 6-8 years for one good player when you can spend that much on developing our bottomless barrell of rookie talent and have a great team in easily 6-8 years.
And secondly, Gainey did not LET Souray go, he offered him what he is worth(obviously the same that other teams are offering him because he hasn’t gone anywhere) and Souray and his agent denied that offering. So instead gainey made a smart move by getting Hammer, who is a better D-man then Souray and if you can’t see that you don’t know hockey. Hell Souray is still a UFA, he could potentially still come back( I don’t see how and frankly I don’t care). Joshtm do you love seeing Souray giveaway the puck and then get danced around by other teams players or something?? Because thats what’s been happening. At least with Hammer he will be able to make that crisp break-out pass that begins every play, a crucial pass, not bank it off the glass or ring it around the boards like Souray does, only to have it intercepted and end up in the back of our net. PLus Hammer has a great shot and can replace Souray on the PP. Now he obviously doesn’t have the offensive side like Souray but his great defensive skills will make up for that. I mean what would you rather have a 10 goal scorer who is a +25 or a 20 goal scorer who is a minus 30.. DO the math Joshtm. And you hate Bouillon and Dandenault so much? There combined plus minus was still better then Sheldon Souray’s last year. They are good for thier postion, a 3rd set of defenders, thats what they do!! Are you kidding me, I mean did you see when Bouillon dropped his mits and layed out a little Bitch called Darcy Tucker.. You can’t sit there and tell me you didn’t cheer when that happened. Or maybe you didn’t see that happen, maybe you didn’t see any of last season, you and Xhabsfan were to busy practising positions out of the Kama Sutra..
And yes I know last season was a bust.. Everyone knows that including Bob Gainey. And if you weren’t paying attention the guy did everything he could to try and land a big name player here. So how can you blame the guy if those players CHOSE not to come! Yes gainey has made some bad moves, but he has made some good ones too. I mean would you still want to be backstopped by Theodore? Honestly joshtm you wouldn’t know what to do with yourself if you were a GM of any team. You don’t know hockey, all you know is saying random shit and ranting and crying. You should go join xhabsfan’s blog.

Josh.. get off the crack pipe. If you were a Sens fan back when they came back into the league you’d be screaming after the third year that they were in last place. The Habs have been badly managed for well over a decade before Gainey got here, it’s going to take at least that long to get them back into a good position. You can’t trade Samsonov and a first round draft pick for Crosby in real life, so stop pretending that we’re living in a video game. I don’t think anyone out there could do a better job than Gainey, so while it’s easy to sit back and blame everything from no one wanting to sign in Montreal to global warming on Gainey, the reality is that neither you nor anyone else could do a better job of it. If you don’t want to be a fan through the hard times, then go jump wagon and be an Anaheim fan… for this year.

What the hell, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. I’m with RBK. Dude, you make a lot of sense. Sounds like you need a tag team partner anyway. LOL.

joshtm…in post # 103, you said Gainey was chasing out the high scorers…then why did he get rid of Samsanov and keep Ryder? What the hell are you talking about, moron? And what’s so special about Souray? He led the team with 135 penalty minutes last season. Yeah, he had 26 goals, but -28 rating. Take him off the ice completely, and there’s the extra 2 goals we needed to beat the Leafs to get into the playoffs. I know it doesn’t really work that way, but it almost makes sense, doesn’t it? Yeah, he’s got a wicked slapshot, I’ll give him that, but 19 of those goals were on the PP. If Hamerlik can’t replace him there, then Carbo does like Murray did for the Sens and drops a forward with a hard slap shot on the point for the PP. Souray won’t be a huge loss…especially since his defensive game is so lacking.

No where in my last post did I mention anything about having the “D” to win the cup?????? Where do you get that s-h-i-t???? Again, you obvioulsy purposely skipped over the point…again. You said Markov was not a good defenseman, I pointed out with actual stats that he is and I think the habs would have a very good “D” corp if all we had was Markovs on the blueline!

      Stay to the point goofball!!!

As for the $40 Million…..it was spent on the players on the roster of the habs you dumb goof……what did you think…Bob stole it???

This blog has turned into an absolute joke and it’s not even fun anymore.

Seriously. People complain about how much certain players, and sometimes I agree that they suck or that they’re cancers(ie. Kovalev) but no one offers A REALISTIC OPTION(go read and understand the freakin CBA some of you) on how to get rid of them or improve the team. Everyone wants instant results with no patience and no actual feasable ideas on how to do it. Everyone complains about Gainey and Carbo yet they don’t bring up anyone to replace them with accept people who are already employed and wouldn’t come or dream about Scotty Bowman coming back(get real, he has no loyalty to the Habs anymore, his loyalty is to the Red Wings).

Until people actually come up with some constructive, REALISTIC ideas on how to improve the team this blog will continue to be an absolute gong show.

Lebeau… The only thing I’ll disagree with is when you talk about Souray’s bad +/-, you have to take into account that he did get alot of his points on the PP, and those points do not count towards your +/- … so it’s misleading. Souray was the primary reason that we had the highest rated PP in the league last year, either from him scoring from his shot or from the PK having to slide forwards up high to cover him and leaving space down low for the forwards to operate. Yes, Souray isn’t good defensively, but in his case, his offensive upside and his physical play make up for his defensive lacking, and we will miss him if he doesn’t come back. With the signing of Hamrlik, I don’t see how Souray can possibly come back… but I still have hope they’ll find a way.

Avatar37…I stand corrected. I honestly didn’t know that PP points didn’t count towards +/-. Either way, as much as I loved seeing that shot of his from the point, I can do without it if it means we have a stronger defense. We’re not going to win games 7-2, so we need to assure that our defense can keep the opposing teams’ scores down.

I’m not a Souray hater, but with Hamrlik on the team, I’m more confident.

LeBeau.. I’m not a Souray hater either, I loved Souray, but when you look at the logical sense of it all, Souray was a bad defenseman,I mean he has a blistering shot and an awesome physical side. But with Hammer here I’m not even sad that he is leaving because Hammer has those and more. It be cool if somehow they could keep him but who cares if he is gone because we already have a better D-man on our lineup. Your right LeBeau.. With Hammer shoring up the hole in our D Souray won&#
