Dandy and Ryder for Marleau? Doesn't seem like a bad thing, but can Marleau perform in Montreal is what you gotta ask yourself....Ryder has proved he can. So is this an ingenius move if it happens, or just another case like Lecaire where the powers that be shoot themselves in the foot again.

Brisebois is back!!!- not many people have the cohones that he does comming back to Montreal - even after all the heat he got - - far and few people could do what he just did - I just gained new respect for the briser !!! a real winner and a true Montreal Canadien - with all the pressure in Montreal and BS - hats off 2 Brisebois ! go habs go ! Brisebois is now a true leader in the Montreal dressing move ! Simply fantastic - all whom doubt in him now are delusional --- and have a couple of marbles missing especially for the price we got him 4 - he's no loger the 4.2 million dolllar man but a true Montreal champion - his decision will bring a cup back 2 montreal , he will and everybody in 1 year will have to thank brisebois - nrver thought I would have said this but he made it happen! Time will show the pessimist all wrong! Simply fantastic!

YUP - In all due respect, Gainey was not GM when Brisebois and Theo received their contracts and he traded Theo to releave us of his burden. Theo was one of the best goalies the year prior to recieving the contract and Gainey still went after Price his first year as GM. As for Brisbois, he let go to Colorado to recieve the his next payday once his contract expired.

Look at Riberio's replacement, Pleckanics, who has done his job better at about half the price with twice the attitude improvement. Nimiina was aquired because of injury needs when Bouillon when down.

Time will tell what direction the CH will take... Gainey doing just fine.

Some of the stuff that Gainey has done are really bad. Think of the big salaries he gave Brisebois (over 4 million a year), and Theodore (over 5.5 M per year), when a lot of people knew that these players were bad. Then came trading Ribeiro for Niniima.. which didnt quite work out well. Now he's given Hamrlik a superstar salary. It is curious how he manages to overpay a few players quite a lot and also manages to underpay other players.
Id give him one more year. If we dont make the playoffs this year he should be gone along with Charbonneau. If the team doesnt improve dramatically by next year, he should also be gone.

Rubberman ~ I am not sure money is the whole issue for the most part... In this years UFA market, we could have offered upward of $10 million with the new salary cap at $50... That sort contract$$$ is and should be reserved for the elite few franchise players in the league... none of which were available in this years UFA pool.

Gainey offered Briere and Smyth more money than they settled for with their new respective teams for whatever reasons. Those guys are good players but not franchise players. If we want a franchise player like Lecavalier our team will have to prove we're a worthy top level team. The team needs a winning appeal to sell a player on it's club. Nobody wants to come into a situation where they're deemed the savor of an organization because it sets them up for failure. ESPECAILLY MONTREAL...

Another issue every team faces is most Franchise players usually stay within an organization because their repective teams do everything their power to sign them a year prior to FA status. Giving them long expensive contracts which almost guarantees they won't see a FA market while in their prime. Tampa, however, offers a unique situation (disadvantage), in that, they have a franchise player, but they are also paying Richards franchise player money, along with St. Louis's making a hefty pay check, with both locked up with No trade clauses making them very difficult to move. Lecavalier has 2 years less on his contract and has no TRADE CLAUSE provisions in place. Another further disadvantage team is that Tampa has inacted a salary CAP lower than the league at around $44 million. This will make it nearly impossible for #1 to resign Lecavalier and #2 pick up the necessary tools to make the team better... (#1 Goalie comes to mind and some Defense support wouldn't hurt either).

Montreal's advantage is that Lecavalier is from Montreal. He knows the history, the hockey culture, and the status being successful on the most storied franchise in hockey. Gainey has to sell this point. He needs to emphasize that in order to becaome a LEGEND he must come to a place were LEGENDS are born. Somehow he has to make this point more important than money because Montreal is at a slight tax disadvantage than everywhere else.

Lecavalier is our best opportunity to acquire a star player in my opinion. Gainey is waiting for the chance and hopefully he can pounce on it when it arises. These rarely happen, but waiting patiently...with money in hand, Gainey is lurking for this deal to home bring home the cup and cement his status in history.

When trying to sign a big name free agent, couldn't Gainey tell the player I'll give you the maximum salairy for every year you sign (e.g 4 yrs or 5). So, if the max is 8 million this yr, 9 next, 9.5 after that... Wouldn't that encourage a player like Lecavalier to sign.
On another note, I couldn't fathom making millions per yr...
