Canadiens game summarized…
- Canadiens score early and dominate most of game, but lack of scoring ability limits them to the one early goal.
- Canadiens take bad, late penalty and allow a team that should have been put to rest early, to score a goal with 10 seconds remaining in the game.
- Panthers take it to a shootout and steal a goal, two points and the win. Canadiens lose second consecutive home ice game.
Even though the Canadiens played well most of the game and Vokoun stood on his head, losses like this hurt as much or worse then a 7-1 blowout. Because the Canadiens should have locked up those 2 points easily.
No scoring and no discipline haunt the Habs again.

Here’s my concern. Kovalev and Huet claim it’s the best 60 minutes the team played this season. And stall it only produced 1 goal. Plus come on they weren’t playing the Ottowa Senators here. Sure Vokoun was sharp but isn’t the opposing goalie supposed to be sharp? So from this I gather that the only way we can win this season is:
1.We play a solid 60 minutes of hockey
2. The opposing goalie has an off night
Looks like another long season. Too early to tell though.
I can’t understand how a team like the Flyers can go from the worst team in the league one year to a competitve team the next while we just continue to be mediocre year after year. Very frustrating.

I see that Kovalev is blaming Carbonneau for not taking a time out once Komi’s penalty was called so that the players could have been rested for the ensuing Panther’s power play. Cracks are already starting to appear. At the end of the day the Habs need to put the puck into the net. This has been their problem for several years. The veterans are not going to somehow get better and turn into scoring machines. They are who they are. This team’s future is riding on the youngsters proving that they are big league talent.

Rumour is now out there that Calgary scouts were in attendance last night and that a Alex Tanguay for Alex Kovalev is in the works. If that is the case Gainey could kiss his job goodbye.

How more patient can we be. 13 yrs. & counting. I don’t like Carbo one bit. If you have not got the players what can he do?
Does anyone here honestly think that if we had Scotty Bowman or Jacque Demeirs (can’t spell his name)for a coach last year and this year we would make the playoffs and go far?????????????????????

Carbo is making the same mistakes as last year! HR NEVER TAKES TIME OUTS!
He should have last night! And the game in Toronto! And he constantly has the wrong personnel on the ice, AT THE MOST CRUCIAL TIMES! Carbo has to go. He’ll be fired before xmas! MARK MY WORDS!

I like Carbo but if his players don’t respect him, it’s all over for him… Come on, Bob Gainey, do the right thing and send Guy to Hamilton for some experience… Hell, I’d even take Pat Quinn at this point cuz you can tell it’s gonna be a long hard year with Carbo v.2.

I agree Carbo and his defensive system has got to go. Sure defense is good but you also need to score goals. And we don’t seem to have a team that can do that, while being under Carbos watch. Bye Bye Guy.

JAKER 1.If Gainey accepts something like that. MTL is getting only getting 40 pts this season. right now I’m thinking 75?think about it. the habs haven’t scored 4 goals or more in any of there games? the most they will score will be 3!

BTW, Souray is injured with a separated shoulder, out indefinitely. He has only 1 goal and 1 assist in 6 games. Maybe it was a good idea not to resign him. On the habs front, alot of turmoil on this team. Kovalev showed up Carbo, by saying: ” CARBO SHOULD HAVE TAKEN A TIMEOUT, AND CHANGED PERSONNEL ON THE ICE, PRIOR TO FLORIDA SCORING THE TYING GOAL.” He’s right. Another huge mistake by Carbo, costing us a win. Is Carbo brain dead, or what?

The Habs totally outworked Fla last night, but still only get one goal, this is a team that just has no scoring punch whatsoever, defense is great, but a team also has to score some goals to get in the W column. I think last nights game showed they are a hard working team, but again no real scoring ability.
NOW today I hear that “TEAM CANCER” ( see all those sores around his mouth )—read that as Kovalev—the gutless ruskie, knows how to coach better than Carbo,Just too bad he doesn’t know WHAT HIS JOB IS!! Carbo should refuse to use this Scumbag and force Bob’s hand to get rid of cancerous rodent. Tanguay on a crutch and one arm in a cast is ten times better than scumbag kovalev.
After watching last night’s game, I was just absolutely fed up.

It’s precisely these kind of games that you think back to when you’re sitting on the couch in April, wondering how we could lose out of the playoffs by three points or whatever. I guess I’d be kind of surprised if we’re anywhere near that close to a playoff spot this spring.

the habs won’t make it this year. every year,we always start out good like last year 25-8-1. this is ours 2-1-1 and the sens will kick our *** 2night. the middle of the season is usually when we suck ***. we’ll end up with at least 70+ pts this season. I’m thining 14th place.

Lay off Kovalev, yeah he’s a prima donna baby but he’s actually putting out an effort this season… This isn’t the “worst team in their history” and everyone should quit whining cuz it is a team headed in the right direction with the youth and if they get their you-know-what together, they could actually surprize a little along the way. This ain’t the Habs of our youth (well, my youth… the ’70s) so quit expecting a STANLEY CUP every year. This blog was filled with nothing but whiners and complainers last year and it got real repetitive real fast SO ALL YOU NAYSAYERS LIGHTEN UP at least we’re not the Leafs (and don’t give me that bull “waah, but the Leafs are ahead of us in the standings). The Habs have a plan and a future, the Leafs never do, never will, both teams stink right now but the Habs will get better while the Leafs will ALWAYS STINK. ’nuff said.

This goes to prove why just making the playoffs does not help your team in the future or immediately. You end up drafting 15,16 or 17. All that is left at that point is second or third line players.This team has to have a disaster year or trade a pile of Bob Gainey’s so-called future stars for a bonafied superstar. Make someone an offer they can’t refuse,if not stand pat and finish last but please don’t just add pieces to make the playoffs. Its not like the fans are going to make a statement. The Bell Centre is sold out every year and will continue to sell out.

On the upside:
Latendresse played a good game–he did much better than the he did in the first few games. Plekanac is struggling the last few games, but the announcers on RDS are way off to say that he isn’t the player this year that he was last year. His first few games of the year were excellent and he’s actually a pleasant surprise. Ryder is skating better. Higgins is looking like a solid 2nd line player–maybe on his way to first line caliber? And Kovalev is leading the team offensively, as he should. Price also looks very good–he let in a soft goal, but that happens to every goalie. A .900 save percentage, in your first few games in the NHL, is actually better than Roy.
What I like most about Price, though, is his positioning and his puck skill. Notice with his positioning that he’s always in front of the puck–just like Roy and unlike Theodore. I’m not saying he’s the next Patrick Roy–even though he might be–but I am saying that he reminds me of Roy in style and skill.
A Kovalev for Tanguay trade is a bad idea–that’s not even close. Kovalev for Tanguay and a 1st round draft pick, or Kovalev for Tanguay and another good player from the Flames might make it worthwhile. But I just can’t see that happening.
All in all, last night was a game filled with rookie mistakes–but that’s the downside of having an exiting future on the ice in front of you every night.
If I had any advice for Carbo–and since I’m a blog poster and he’s an NHL coach/player, I’m sure he’s going to listen–is to stop whining at the refs for every single penalty. This trickles down the team, even at the NHL level, and it means that the refs won’t take you seriously when you have a legitimate beef. Complaining about every penalty is something that players do, it’s not something that good coaches do. In any case, it’s probably too late now.

Let’s root for the team, people, not tear ‘em down, stupid moronic fans and stupid moronic media are the reason very few NHLers seem to want to come to play in Montreal, don’t add to that by being one of those kind of ‘fans’.
I don’t wanna hear all year how Bob Gainey’s a bad GM and Guy Carbonneau’s a bad coach, Gainey’s track record speaks for itself and Carbo, well, like it or not, is learning as he goes, as hard as that can be for him and the fans. Patience has a reward while kneejerk reaction will only lead to being a complete screwup of a team forever (again, witness the Leafs)…
This Blog is for intelligent Hab fans with insight and the occasional irrational vent, NOT for constantly cutting up the GM, the coach and the players, if you want to do that go cheer for the Leafs and Bryan McCabe.

nevertheless, as fans, we are entitled to our opinions, like it or not.
If we give constructive criticism, it is in hopes that we can help the habs management see their own mistakes, and improve in the areas being mentioned. There’s nothing wrong with that. And of course, we’re all very frustrated. This team should be getting better, not going in the opposite direction.
The biggest problem with this team, is the fact that Carbo changes line combinations as fast as you can blink. They need time together to gel, form some type of chemistry. If a line doesn’t click in 1 game, that’s no reason to break them up. They need time, and Carbo is not willing to give them the time and patience required. I think I make a valid and obvious point. Carbo: give the lines time to bond, please!

Yep i agree chevy4ch this is one thing that bugs the hell out of me with carbo well that and how he always always always complains to the refs after every penalty.You are right how can a team gel when you are always playing musical chairs.I respect carbo and gainey alot as players but their names will only take them so far in montreal.Gaineys plan is to build from within the organization and that is a smart way to run a team but you need to add to it.When you look at a team like pittsburg who has built a team through the draft with “GREAT” players not “GOOD” players and in my opinion are still a few years away from winning a cup so tell me where that leaves the habs when we just draft 3rd line “GOOD” players.Go down the list of the ottawa’s roster and anaheims roster and compare them to the habs lol not even close eh?We are light years away from even a sniff at a cup and im just being honest.Having said all that i wont miss a hab game this year and i will be cheering for the boys to kick some butt and hope for the best GO HABS GO

Hey Pactum, it was groundworking and not chevy4ch that had the comment about how Carbo ******* all the time at the refs.
A few times I did notice that Carbo did bite his lip even though they were close calls. Everyone has their own perpective of the game, and frankly that last game in Ottawa was BRUTAL reffing. One of the goals should have been called off due to inteference.
The Habs are no stranger to bad luck luck. Last year they started off great and then the Flu, and then the season slide down the toilet. ANYTHING can happen in this league. The Rangers seem to start poorly and then pick it up in the end.
I don’t know about you, but I’d rather have team momentum towards the END of the season, and not the Beginning like uhhhh, Buffalo?

I wonder if the refs are blowing calls (eg. an off-side that was noticeable on tv, the Heatley interference on Brisebois that lead to his goal) just to rub Carbo’s face in it? Is it they’re way of telling him to shut up.

I doubt it Rubberman, but they certainly aren’t going to give Carbo any favours. But I see two consequences–first, the refs do not take him seriously when he has a legitimate beef, and, second, the younger players are whining like hell whenever they get a penalty (even very obvious ones, especially Komisarek and Latendresse). And notice the other night that Plekanac kept getting tossed out of the draws with Brindamour for not squaring around before Brindamour put his stick down. Carbonneau kept trying to complain but none of the refs would come over to the bench. When they finally did come over, during a TV timeout, Carbo was whining. All he had to say was “what is the problem, ref?” and “ok, thanks, I understand, but can you watch for this on Brindamour?” Refs will pay attention to something if you ask them, but they eventually stop listening to you when all you do is complain and complain, even when the ref is clearly right.
For another example of this knee-jerk “get out of my face” phenomenon, check out any footage at all from last year of pre-Captain Crosby trying to talk to the refs–the ref’s hand would go up, his finger comes out, and that’s it. No listening.
Complaining to the refs is just like diving. It’s taken Kovalev basically an entire career to get to the point where the refs have to have anything less than a complete and full view of any penalties committed against him before they’ll call anything.

I think that if it turns out were not in the playoff race by the halfway point in the season, we should tank all the games to get the #1 pick in the draft. look at Chicago: they got the #1 and #3 picks, and those picks are playing this year, and thy’re playing very well. When you get #1-5 picks, you’re in good shape. It would be worth it, because we would be sent for next year. Or would you guys prefer mediocre teams indefinitely? I for one, say I can live with a crappy year if it means great picks playing next year.
look at Pittsburgh: they got Crosby and Malken as a result of finishing in the basement. So Chicago, and Pittsburgh did it. So can we!
