Price Taking Over?
-
So at the beginning of the season many people said “Carey Price will be the #1 Goalie by Christmas.”
Well here we are a week from Christmas and Carey Price is about to start his 7th straight game.
Granted, Cristobal Huet was out with a groin injury but he has been deemed fit to play and Carbonneau elects still to start Carey Price tonight.
Price’s record in those games is nothing miraculous but he did manage to string together two consecutive wins in the last two games.
Is Carbonneau just going with the hot hand or does the Carey Price stock rise enough to nudge Cristobal Huet further over to the side?
A lot depends on the game tonight. Another strong performance by Price and Carbonneau has some tough decisions to make.

- nilan : D'Agostini looked like an NHLer saturday night. Thats more than I can say for the last 2 seasons of latendresse. For what its worth, I think its too soon to talk trades- this is a WAY talented team, but only have a handful of guys playing with heart. Oh, and I like Komisarek on the ice better than behind the bench!
- Habs Blog : flu kicked my ass
- Mats Naslund : *the pros. These players just need to step it up. They did it last year.
- Mats Naslund : I would agree that having Markov as the point shot on the PP has been a failure. He is much more effective as a set up man. The Habs could absolutely use the Souray and Streit type shot on the point (but they couldn't afford to keep those guys). It would be nice if someone from within could fill that spot, be it Tanguay, Lang or Andrei Kostitsyn or whoever. Sergei played that spot on the PP with Kane and Gagner in Junior and lit it up. I'm not sure if he has the velocity to make it happen in t
- habs#1fan : All I was saying is that I myself believe we need those players (the centerman and the D-man) to help us now. I'm no expert by no means, am I wrong? Quite possibly. But that D-man would help our struggling PP. This team is deep in prospects which would make a deal easier to do. But yeah given the team's record so far maybe status quo would be best. GO HABS GO
- Mats Naslund : I think this would be a terrible time to make a trade. We need to see these players handle this adversity. To get value you need to trade value, and right now its a buyers market in Montreal. If there are team needs closer to the playoffs then Gainey will have to make a move, but don't sell the farm in desperation.
- habs#1fan : I know everyone is sick of hearing this including myself, however I do think the time to make a deal would be now. I don't know who is on the block but we still need another center and a PP D-man with a big shot. We have got a lot of good prospects, Max Pac, Chipchura, Maxwell, White, D'Agostini not to mention the junior and college players.
- Senet1 : Well I understand your thinking groundworking, I guess I just choose to look at this team as a team that will build to the playoffs. I do not necessarily see us finishing first in the division but Carbo has to prepare them for the PO. I just hope that I am right!
- groundworking : I hope you're right, Senet, and positive attitudes never hurt. I guess my problem is that I don't see the rough stretch in the win/loss column as the main concern, but also the lack of effort in many of the games that they won early--squeaking out wins against lesser opponents, often in shootouts, and without much help from the PP. The killer instinct and the "something to prove" edge that they had last year just hasn't seemed to be there, with two exceptions: a pre-season against Detroit
- PACTUM SERVA : Dave morissette looks like a monkey lol.
- Senet1 : With due respect groundworking, I think you are jumping the gun. If we are going to panic everytime our team has a bad stretch then we might as well pack it in. This team is better than last years team on paper, they are just struggling right now. Let's stay positive. After a bad performance last night this is a game that the players may have started to doubt themselves. A win is a win and we always have had trouble with Buffalo.
- groundworking : I hate to be negative, but I broke down, watched the game, and I'm still panicked, lol--Buffalo is a weak team, they were 3-6-3 in their last ten, and this was a hard fought game by the Habs, at home, after a bad outing the night before...oh, and S. Kostitsyn took two selfish penalties...and the PP didn't score on a 5-3 for two mins. Sorry to be so negative. I just think they don't have it this year
- Senet1 : If Carbo has lost the dressing room then these guys do not deserve to be in the NHL, he coaches the way he plays and he would not ask anyone to do something that he would not do. The players better get over it. Maybe based on tonight they are starting to get the point??
- Mats Naslund : MUCH better 2nd period tonight. Almost looks like the Canadiens we've been looking for for a month. Great goal by Markov from Koivu. We should always play 4 on 4.
- PACTUM SERVA : GO HABS GO
- groundworking : I expect a decent effort tonight, and then I expect them to choke the next game and possibly the game after that. Someone suggested that Carbo's lost the dressing room. That's a good point. Hard to say. Something's wrong, though. I plan NOT to watch the game, as I've just been getting frustrated this year with their play (unlike the last two years).
- habs#1fan : Carbo demotes the Kostitsyns to the fourth line but yet he leaves Latalentless (to quote Mr Pactum lol) on the second line? Now cmon Guy, I know he's got the same name as you and all but he hasn't done squat to be on the second line. Did that guy even play last night? Then again who really did? Glad to see D'Agostini play maybe bring some energy and fight
- flyinghab : I don't even want to talk about tonite's game ... it can be also be ugly in front of the home crowd. Carbo is becoming a broken record with his speeches now. Has he lost the dressing room ?
- flyinghab : Last year was an extremely lucky year. No injuries, kovy on good year ( 1 outta 4 ), therefore the habs were a bunch of overachievers. This year reality has struck. If we could buy some "heart" Gainey should invest.
- flyinghab : Wow... after watching part of this horrid game, I'm thinking with this team we'll be fortunate to even make the playoffs this year. So sad. Get Bob on the line please.
- PACTUM SERVA : No effort no heart no balls. This team is like watching paint dry. Gutless effort. Maybe their tampons were bothering them tonight.
- Mats Naslund : wow terrible game. i'm not mad right now, i think i'm just revolted. they did nothing for 60 minutes. uninspired, uncoordinated, and unproductive. i didn't even like how carbo coached the game. totally disgusting night.
- VanHab : later
- groundworking : lol agreed -- ill talk to you later
- VanHab : certainly makes for a better Friday night than watching the rest of this horrible game
- groundworking : They've had worse teams, but none that worked less than these guys
- groundworking : I've followed the Habs religiously since 1985, this is the slackest team that they've had since then
- VanHab : lol groundworking
- VanHab : a change has to come and soon
- groundworking : I've stopped watching the game--I posted here to rant and now I'm going to do something I enjoy more, like shovel dog crap off my back lawn
- VanHab : I can't believe we're being shutout by Theodore
- groundworking : Even October when we were winning, the team was just barely squeaking by against some really bad teams
- groundworking : pathetic
- groundworking : no digging for the puck
- VanHab : not the way we've been playing the whole month of November

I think Carbo’s decision to play Price tonight was based on The teams performance in the last few games. Price will be taking over the #1 spot, I just don’t think it will right now. Another reason Price is starting tonight is because Carbo doesn’t want to rock the boat.
December 18, 2007 pm31 6:39 pm
I agree with Habsfan. Price will eventually take over, but not yet. They still need a good goalie in the organization to keep the pressure of Price, and to prevent him from getting ruined, while still allowing the team to win, in the event that he hits some kind of slump. Clearly, though, we have the best young goalie in the World and the next superstar net-minder in the NHL; calm, steady, and in position…and only 20 years old no less in the NHL.
I suspect that Huet could get traded, if that’s possible, at around the trade deadline or perhaps in the off-season. He’s an absolutely excellent goalie, but he deserves to be a starter and someone somewhere will give something good to get him.
December 18, 2007 pm31 9:08 pm
wow they are playing really bade this game.
December 18, 2007 pm31 9:19 pm
so, wh’s worse at clearing a puck, Price or Huet? Huet will be playing next game. Habs never beat Florida, and Florida is the only team that habs don’t have a winning record against, in all 100 years! Yes, habs look very bad tonight. guess last 2 wins were just to tease us.
December 18, 2007 pm31 9:29 pm
Who’s better. That is a stupid question by far. I won’t even answer it.
Why do Montreal anyways have trouble with the crappy teams?
Well Montreal did not show up for the first period. Hopefully they will for the last two.
I don’t blame Price for the two 1st period goals. The 1st goal he had no chance on. The second he tried to clear the puck since the D-men could not and Florida got a shot on the empty net. It seemed like the Montrel player did not put much effort into stoping the puck. All he had to do was slide across and he would have stopped it. The shot was soft along the ice.
Anyway Come on boys lets make it up next period.
December 18, 2007 pm31 9:55 pm
Wow never knew this, but the only organiztion the Habs have an all time losing record against is the Florida Panthers. Hmmmmmmm wonder how this happened. Oh well, I guess they’re just the Habs kryptonite, just like the Habs are to Boston.
December 18, 2007 pm31 10:17 pm
I see that the Huet lovers will be out in full force pretty soon..
Yeah, like Huet would have stopped the first goal right. NOT.
Well the Huet Lovers got thier wish. Price loss and Huet will be in net next game…………
REMEMBER HUET LOVERS. IT WAS HUET WHO LET IN THE SOFT GOALS THAT COST THE HABS A PLAYOFF BIRTH LAST YEAR IN THE LAST GAME. SO MUCH FO THE #1 GOALIE………BOY HOW YOU FORGET…………..
Huet has done nothing to impress ……………..
December 18, 2007 pm31 11:00 pm
blah blah blah
GO HABS GO!!!!!!
December 18, 2007 pm31 11:00 pm
The score was not indicative of the play. Habs were horrible tonight. THEIR WORST PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR! totally dominated by Florida. They made Florida look like Detroit. This team cannot win at home! SHAMEFUL PERFORMANCE! All the fans should ask for their money back, and hopefully not show up for home games. Don’t do it fans. Their not worth it!
December 19, 2007 pm31 2:06 am
Carey Price gets way too much buzz fo what he’s done so far this season! I hope to god he’s the next Ken Dryden/ Patrick Roy. Montreal fans deserve it since the team went down hill after the ‘93 cup. Huet is an awsome goalie and so is Price. However, Huet is more consistant and has stole games for mtl where price has not. Price’s 1 gaa games were because he had a team standing u in front of him. Huet has stolen enough games to deserve the #1 spot and his team has let himdown many times this season. Huet should have a few shut outs on the season. Te team always goes defensive in the third and they pay the price, sorry, Huet pays for it. Thats why Huet doesnt have any shut outs. Dont ge me wrong im not a Huet lover, I hope Price is the prodigy. however, im not niave, and Price lets in too many 1 on 1 goals which is unexceptable! Price is not taking over this season. He’s not ready. He hasnt proven himself at all! he’s only proven that he has the composure to play at this eve comfortably. And sometimes I think that hes just a little too composed in the net!
December 19, 2007 pm31 2:29 am
Price does not bang his stick on the crossbar like Huet acting like some little boy in peewee.
December 19, 2007 pm31 2:45 am
why so much talk about the goalie??? there is five men that play in front of him!!! share the blame, if you feel the need to blame anyone at all!!!!
December 19, 2007 pm31 3:40 am
Nice finnish though, nice try, can’t win em all.Would of won with Latendrese in stead of Ryderless, rite Pactum?…lol
December 19, 2007 pm31 7:49 am
Well the habs are on the road now so look for some wins.lol
December 19, 2007 pm31 11:40 am
start huet next game. That was a bad clearing pass by price, cost us the game as far as i,m concerned.Huet Huet Huet.Go with ur #1 GOALIE.
December 19, 2007 pm31 12:44 pm
The bottom line is: This team is unable to play for 60 minutes, and they don’t show up for more than half their games. So how are they expected to win?
I blame the coach. This has been an ongoing problem for 2 years. If the coach is unable to motivate his players, then he has to go!
As far as Price is concerned, he has been over hyped. He is ok, but not great. He allows 1 soft goal every game, and needs more tutoring and experience if he is ever expected to be a great goalie. I find he is far too relaxed in nets. I would like to see more fire and emotion from this kid. He always has an excuse why the puck went in. He needs to start taking responsibility and blame for mistakes, and he needs to learn from his mistakes. So far he has not. That is a sign of experience. I just wish the media didn’t hype him up so much. He isn’t another Dryden, Roy, Brodeur, or even Loungo. I see him as a good goalie in time, but not great one.
December 19, 2007 pm31 2:41 pm
Would you be happier with Habashit, leave Price alone, same goes for Latendresse or Lapierre etc.You know the Flower wasn’t so **** hot his first year either,so back off.Or let’s trade Price for CUJO,lol…
December 19, 2007 pm31 7:59 pm
Hey habs2010, Roberto Luongo’s first 3 years: 35 wins 71 losses, 2.82 GAA
Price so far…9 wins 6 losses 2.72 GAA
Yeah I know its retarded to imply that Price is going to be better then Luongo based on 17 starts, that’s the whole point! How can you say he won’t be as good as Luongo you freakin’ idiot! You fairweather habs fans make me puke, get off the kid’s back, get off of Koivu’s back, I’m so sick of so called fan’s on this site saying things like let’s boycott the home games, or let’s boo, or let’s chant Lecavalier, go get a Leafs jersey and be done with it, we’d be better off without you!!!!!!
December 19, 2007 pm31 10:30 pm
I would like to know 1 person who thinks the habs showed up for 2 and a half periods in last night’s game? Were you honestly happy with their performance? Have they played well at home? Do they have a winning record at home? hmmm…can’t hear you? All I’m saying, (and I know it’s been reiterated by alot of hab fans), is that Price appears too calm, and I would like to see some emotion and fire in him. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say he appears as calm as someone smoking marijuanna or on tranquilizers. Do you know what I’m saying? His concentration is a bit off. He is allowing at least 1 soft goal every game, and that’s not good enough. Take away the 2nd goal, and we’re tied. nobody’s perfect, and he needs more tutoring and experience. I sincerely hope he will develop into a top goalie, but who knows? Playing in the NHL is not the same as the AHL or junior hockey, so the jury is out.
December 20, 2007 pm31 12:30 am
no doubt! you frenchies are always riding Koivu because hes not a french captain! the guy is the heart of the team! and heres n o ne out there to potect him since they got rid of rivet and souray. Dont get me wrong, I love what we got coming up with our young guys! who cares if we miss the playoffs this year. Its soo much more rewarding knowing that the coming seasons will be wicked with our prospects.
DTD - I watched that game and I felt Huets frustration when his team blew his shut out! wat game were ou watching. The canadiens organization have always had thei heads so far up their ***’s they cant take it when anyone gets frustrated and shows it or says anything condescending about the coaching/staff. Good for Huet!
Trade ryder, perezhogen, higgins… get someone who can play with koivu and some prospects
December 20, 2007 pm31 1:22 am
Hey Marvel: are you on planet earth, or what? Perehzogin left after the end of last season and went back to Russia. And Huet hasen’t played in over 2 weeks. where’s your brain man? Obviously you haven’t been following the habs!
December 20, 2007 pm31 11:54 am
The Huet soft, late in the 3rd period goals are true. Five times so far in this short season the game was lost or a point was lost and given to the opponent. Thats a difference….thats another 5 to 8 points that would be on their tally this season. Makes a difference at years end doesn’t it? Now I’m not pointing the gun directly at Huet here either…I like the guy…in all these situations he’s gotten no help either. Guy, the getting up by a goal and trying to defend it for half a game or more doesnt work ok…..when you collapse in your own zone and play that boring, stupid brand of hockey, theres one word to the wise….YOU GOTTA BE GOOD ENOUGH TO DEFEND IT..we’re not. The opposition has 80% of the possesion, they get us chasing in our zone, we take penalties, and they get the goal they need…then a team who has been playing nothing but defense for 30 mins gotta try to get back into offensive mode..doesn’t work…not in Montreal anyways where we have trouble scoring 5 on 5 at the best of times. Can’t anyone in the front office or behind the bench see this ??? Hows about playing a full 60 mins of 2-way hockey ? Try that as a “secret” weapon. Give the forwards on this team a green light for offensive freedom and inventivness…just like Detroit and Ottawa. Forwards should be able to go do their job and not have to constantly worry more about being back behind their own blue line..talk about ***-backwards. My point on all of this is that you can’t hang Huet….it’s not just him. He’s won some big games for us over the last season and a half also. I don’ think Price is that much better that him yet….he will be #1…just not right now. Having said that, I also don’t think Huet should be handed his #1 position back either…I think they should use them as Detroit uses Osgood and Hasek…keep both goalies sharp and on their toes….cuz benching Price every 3 games outta 4 isn;t gonna help the guys skills either.
One more thing before I go….whats up with Brisebois on the PP ??? Anyone else find this too dumb to comprehend…the guy was basically run out of Montreal years ago….he;s the same player guys…there hasn’;t been that much improvement. How about trying this…Ryder is slumping bad….he can’t find the net or most times the space for a clean shot. He has a booming shot…try him on the point of the PP….get him more open, and get him whistling a few more shots at the goalies. Get the confidence back with a few goals that way…I’m really surprised they have’nt tried this yet…anyone else think this is worth a try for a guy with proven goal scoring abilities and a hard shot, who’s slumping right now ??
Why can’t we score ??? Simple answer to that..one would be, not enough skill in the lineup which makes a trade emminent…but the other reason is what bothers me….almost any time you look on the ice, who do you see…LaPierre, Kostopolous, Chipchura, Begin, Dandy. These guys aren’t gonna score alot Guy…duh !!! They are role players, like every other teams has…so why aren’t we using em that way…kill penalties, and a handful of shifts each period…thats it !!! The Koivu line isn’t producing….maybe because they’re not getting enough ice time, having to share it with 3rd and 4th liners every game…gotta keep going with your most skilled players..slumping or not;;just take a look at the more properous teams in the league…” why can’t we score”? What a joke…don’t take a GM to see this.
Anyways, sorry for my rantings..I am just one more frustrated Habs fan. GO HABS GO !!
December 20, 2007 pm31 3:35 pm
WHAT DOES “HABS 2010″ MEAN ANYWAYS?
To me it means, no were not great now, but we will be in a few years… we all hope for that.
Building a team from scratch (starting with very little anyhow) takes time.
Price will be excellent, and that is be cause of his attitude… you wanna see him cursing and getting pissed off, rather than “like a pothead”… his maturity is what makes him a standout goaltender, and his composure is somethign every NHL team would want in nets… losing your head as a goalie gets you no where… Habs2010: You do know quite a bit about being a Hab fan, but know very little about the game of hockey or specifically goaltending in this case. Huet is great when healthy, Price will be great, and is learning the hard way… can only make him want it more, he’s a fighter and a workhorse, World Juniors last year… he was the best player for his age in the world in that tournament… not an achievement that deserves this kind of bashing… 2007-08 will be another rough season, but we will hopefully squeak back inot the playoffs, thats all we can hope for and expect at this point in time… 1-2 years time will be a different story
PS - I don’t think that Marvel guy will be posting much anymore, that was horrible.. lol
December 20, 2007 pm31 5:44 pm
Marvel.
The Habs blew Huets’ lead ?????
They scored 4 goals on him….. He did not come close to a shutout.
December 20, 2007 pm31 7:58 pm
Mr. Big Time: I didn’t say Price wasn’t composed. all I said is that sometimes he seems too relaxed, almost like a zombie. Aren’t you ever so relaxed that your concentration isn’t totally on? He doesn’t need to get fire engine red, but alittle more emotional sometimes motivates players. You should be able to understand my reasoning. And yes, I do know alot about hockey, about 40 years worth. I’m not a dummy when it comes to Les Habitants.
December 21, 2007 pm31 12:50 pm
Fair enough~ But let Price develop, and he will… There is no mold for goalies to fall into as far as style, emotion, or attitude. Different things work for different goalies (look at hasek’s effective “flop” style, used by no one else, or Brodeur’s old school stand up style)
Price will be our future, we hope for someone like Roy… but that is dreaming a bit~
PS - I wish we still had goalies stackin the pads like Ranford used to.. was so much more fun to watch then the Giguere no move but hit my massive equipment style
December 21, 2007 pm31 8:37 pm
Huet anothr solid game! caps doubled our shots… Huet won that game…
and im not from quebec so mediaattention for the canadiens is very limited! I was wondring what append to ha guy… he aintmissed anywyz.
December 23, 2007 pm31 12:10 pm
I have to agree with marvel, huet won us the game.
