Kovalev’s Team

Excuse the commercial for Warrior, but this is a pretty impressive video.

Makes you wonder why Kovalev doesn’t score 50+ a year? Then you realize Hockey is a team sport and individual skill can only take you so far. Impressive nonetheless.

Kovalev and his 21 goals and 44 points lead the Canadiens in both categories. Not to mention the +10 he’s posted. Leading by example you might say.

Goal scoring is what they’ll need against Martin Brodeur and the Devils tonight. In particular, the first goal.

The Canadiens have not won in NJ in nearly 6 years and only twice in over 14 years! Almost unbelievable.

Coming off an impressive 8 goal outburst, the Canadiens can’t be any more confident to break the curse than they are right now.

If we are to beat Jersey tonight we have to crash the net. Get in Brodeur’s face. He can’t stop what he can’t see. Shoot the puck on the PP. Not waiting for that fancy play, just shoot and screen Brodeur. We will not score goals from outside the circle on Broduer like we did against Boston unless we get in front of him…..

Kovalev is easily going to score 40 this year, he`s on fire you can see the determination in his eyes, and he`s only getting hotter as the season goes on !!!

We’ll I sure hope that he keeps it up that way. What would you all think about these lines

      Kovalev/Plakanec/Higgins and Koivi/A. Kostitsyn/S. Kostitsyn ?

I think we would potentially have the 2 best lines, I’m pretty sure that Kovalev wouldn’t mind having Higgins on his line

Unless we score the 1st goal, and get a shutout, or record in NJ will
be 1-22-4, and counting. So as good as our dominance is over the bruins, that’s how bad it is over the devils! we can only hope that Brodeur has a rare bad game.

Its time to get to the basics again…all this fancy footwork is going nowhere..if we rush Marty..only choice, whos gonna step up and fight tonight?..yeah only one guy with balls..i dont have to mention it..play the young “k” bothers hard..give the young guns more ice time tonight..we are done anyway..like in Boston..we should have pulled Huet halfway throught the third..Julien played his kids and they had a chance to get some time in..i think tonights our time..Huet a rest..and the “newbies” some ice time…4 to 2 jersey

It seems no matter which web site I’m looking at I see everyone crapping on Carbo for changing the lines all the time……then I see people who want to take arguably the best line in the east right now and break it up….jesus….give your head a shake. If Carbo ever breaks up that line I will personally drive to Mtl, and bitch slap him on National television.

break up Kovy’s line….gee willakers…..why don’t we put Dandenault in net and let Halak and Huet practice their golf swings in the main foyer, with the Lyrics to “am I blue” printed on their bellies….

man oh man……lets get Koivu to shoot right handed tonight huh?….wouldn’t that be fun?

I know thers nothing wrong with the Koivu line..maybe these guys think Canadiens players dont have other things on their mind like family and other personal issues…we dont have a clue whats going on inside the dressing room or on the street, Montreal fans shit on their players more than any people I know..im from Regina…they bitch about the Riders and when they win..the wagon tips over because its loaded with “jumpers”…I hope they dont make Saku another “Gretsky” and dump him like used beerbottle and cash him in…Gainey is way more classy than that…after all..he knows what loss is all about and the “HABS FAMILY” wont disrespect the classiest player in the NHL by tradeing him..EVER!
Halak..get in net…”K” brothers..go out and have fun…Kovalev and Koivu…maybe 15 shifts tonight…4 to 2 Jersey..”Bob”..start looking for a 6ft 4 255 pound crunching machine for the playoffs..we are going to need it ..were going to “Philly’ this April!

      The Sports Network

      1/24/2008 12:43:52 PM

(Sports Network) - A pair of teams coming off decisive victories over division rivals will try to keep the offense going tonight, when the New Jersey Devils welcome the Montreal Canadiens for a battle at the Prudential Center.

The Canadiens pounded the visiting Boston Bruins, 8-2, on Tuesday, while the Devils slammed the Flyers, 7-3, in Philadelphia the same night. Both Montreal and Jersey set season-highs for goals scored.

This evening’s test is the final game for both clubs before the All-Star break.

Montreal continued its dominance of the Bruins with Tuesday’s win, as the Habs improved to 6-0-0 against Boston this season. The Canadiens, who have outscored the Bruins by a 32-10 count this year, have also won nine straight and 16 of the last 19 encounters in the series.

Cristobal Huet made 29 saves, and Andrei Kostitsyn scored twice and added an assist as the Canadiens mauled the Bruins.

Tom Kostopoulos, Bryan Smolinski and Michael Komisarek had a goal and an assist each as Montreal won for the third time in four games.

Michael Ryder, Maxim Lapierre and Alex Kovalev also lit the lamp, while Mark Streit registered three assists and Steve Begin and Sergei Kostitsyn had two apiece.

Montreal has an impressive 16-7-3 record as the visiting club this year and has won five of its last seven road tilts.

The Devils, meanwhile, beat the rival Flyers on Tuesday and grabbed a hold of first place in the Atlantic Division as a result of the win. Zach Parise and Patrik Elias each scored a pair of goals to lead New Jersey to the easy win at the Wachovia Center. It was the second straight win and fifth in seven games overall for the Devils.

Johnny Oduya had a goal and three assists, as the Devils won their fifth straight over the Flyers, and took over the lead in the Atlantic Division. New Jersey is atop the Atlantic with 59 points, Pittsburgh is one back in second and the Flyers are third with 57 points.

Travis Zajac had three assists for the Devils, who were 5-of-8 on power play opportunities. Martin Brodeur made 24 saves in the win.

The Devils are beginning a five-game homestand tonight, but the next test won’t be until Tuesday night against Pittsburgh. Jersey is 14-7-0 as the host this season.

Jersey beat the visiting Habs, 4-0, on November 30 in the only other meeting between the clubs this year. The Devils have taken nine straight and 12 of the last 15 in the series.

Good on les habitants for getting a much deserved, much needed win in Jersey. Koivu’s goal was SICK! I don’t care what any of you say about him, he’s still the heart of the team. His play may be a little poor this year, and Kovalev has taken his place in points. But the little guy still shows he can get er done. I’m so glad I didn’t stop watching when they were losing. They did look shaky in the first 2 periods, but damn, they dominated in the 3rd.

Tough week next week against the Caps! We’re now sitting 6 pts behind the Sens with a game in hand and we’re 4th in the league! Who woulda thought?

Keep those wins comin boys! We need to win at least half our games left to secure a playoff spot. Can’t back down now! We’ll need to improve on home ice for the 9 home games coming up in Feb.

I don’t know what people don’t like about Begin, but for a fourth liner and a player that plays great shorthanded, let me tell you, he belongs in this league much much more than Latendresse that is a puss.y. Doesn’t drop the gloves, don’t no go for a body check face to face, only goes side ways on from behind or after the play. Anyhow, done with comments of unworthy players. But what a come back, loved the game just sucks for Huet’s goal against average 13 shots 3 goals. ouch. Anyhow general performance, it felt good to finally win against Jersey. Go habs go.

its a little obvious the capitals are not trading ovechkin, please give it up on that, only a fantasy.

maybe we got a chance at hossa if atlanta can’t sign him, how about ryder, 1st round pick, gorges, it will probably take more though.

I am(Eklund) told that the Sabres are seriously in the running for Jokinen and that the other team in the running is the MONTREAL CANADIENS…The Flames have also been often linked, however Calgary may be turning to Sundin or Foppa according to a few people here in Atlanta.
What do you guys think? Is It Possible or just B/S.It Would be a sweet pick.

WE’ll I much rather Hamerlik over Souray, specially that now we can count on the rest of the team to score in powerplay. Just imagine all the Turn Overs in our zone if you had Sheldon and Brisbois together. Holly s… lol we’d be in big trouble.

Well fellow habs faithful. We got the second half starting on Tues. Home and home with Wash. to start things off. Kind of worried…we all know what happened after the break last year…..think this year will be different though. They seem a happier team, and a team that has found its way. never thought they could do this without Ryder though….without Koivu really, also. Kovy’s line gotta keep it up…Kostitsyn is looking fabulous. Huet has gotta be just as stelar this whole half (including 3rd periods).
All in all I think we look great…a total breakdown can’t happen 2 years in a row…can it? Come on bloggers….assure me, lol
I really wanna cheer for my team in the playoffs again….at least 2nd round would put a rain cloud over the whole season…don’t ya think.
Good to see Koivu got a couple of points the last game played…all he’s gotta do is keep it up…history with Koivu and longer point streaks isn’t very good, but we’ll see.
Keep it strong team….keep having fun….keep scoring like you’re doing….Komaserek, keep hittin everything that moves….Kovy’s line, keep scoring and thrilling us with some high flying hockey and great stick-handling….Begin, stay outta the box…..Ryder, lets start scoring like you can again….and lets catch those Sens, and at least have a crack at a higher seeding than 4th. GO HABS GO !!!

Hope Gainey does not give away any of the future for a rental player. I would sooner see him wait until the summer and get a player without giving anything up. I think they will make the playoffs but I really do not believe they are ready to challenge for the cup. I am a fan but I am also a realist.

Posted on January 28th, 2008 at 2:38 pm. About 'Kovalev’s Team'.

Totally agree Jaker. Still quite a few elements missing for a bonafide Cup run. Kovy is finally playing hockey, along with Kostitsyn and Plekanec….but Higgins, Ryder, Koivu has busted….this was the main line the last 2 years, and while waiting for Kovy to start putting up numbers, I don’t think anyone could guess that this line would totally break down in the process. So, only 1 dependable scoring line is one hinderance.
Gotta find a way to combat a strong forecheck. Any games this year where the Habs have been outplayed and beaten, the opposition has forechecked hard, consistenly. Our boys don’t like the pressure, and can’t seem to get that first outlay pass to get offensive going. A Cup winner has gotta have a way out of their zone no matter what.
Third, is to play strong defensive hockey WITHOUT taking penalties. Weather ya like him or not, Begin is famous for this. Putting the team down for 2 minutes at different times in the game because some of our defensive forwards can’t defend without goin to the box. And with all the 1 goals games we’re playing this year, a penalty at a crucial time could mean many playoff losses.
A tough guy isn’t crucial, but it would help. Someone on the bench, a presense that would let the opposing players know that if you mess with our producers there’s gonna be consequences (kinda like Bougaard or Laraque). Komisarek is argueably the best knuckle chucker on the team now, but we can’t keep using him because he’s getting way too valuable with his hitting, shot blocking and strong defensive hockey. Besides that, he’s not a player that puts fear into opposing players for his scraping abilities.
Last but definetly not least is our man between the pipes. Huet could possibly do it….any goalie can really get hot down the stretch into the playoffs and take their team all the way….however, I don’t think he’s proven this yet. He’s playing great in net right now and has been for a while, but poor decsions when handling the puck out of his net, and weak 3rd period performances are gonna hold us back. Yopur goalie is stellar, and has to be the backbone of a Cup run (like a Brodeur, Giguere, or Roy).
Saying all of this, anything could happen…look at 93…we weren’t a marvelous team then by any stretch, but everything connected and fell into place just at the right time to take home the silverware. I bet alot of bookies lost their shirts on that one. We’re playing good hockey, racking up the points…just gotta have a strong 2nd half now also. Realistically though, we don’t have a Cup runner here, but we got the makins’…stay strong, parts that are working gotta keep geling, and parts that aren’t working gotta start geling. All in all…we do look better now than we have in years, and high hopes are starting to sneak back in to the minds of all of us Habs faithful. GO HABS GO !!!
