Guys I think an opinion should be based on the overall performance of the habs over the past 30 days. They haven’t played well, and changes, additions are necessary to the offence, simply to take some pressure off the #1 line. Also they need to tighten up defensively, and the goalies need to have better concentration and focus, and play their angles better.
The suspence is killing me !!!! First time in so many years I have been this excited about the deadline .
We sure have options , so Price starts tommorow against Atlanta … and of course some are saying this is cause Huet is out of here … LOL what another rumor?
Tanguay is now not available. Is Hossa really going to come t Montreal? He sucks in the playoffs. But hey, are we even going to the playoffs?lol The habs have to be much better.
The Huet trade baffles me a bit… UFA at the end of year who will be looking for a Bryzgalov like contract($4.25M / season for a minimum of 3 years)… and he’s older (32)…
Is Price ready?? So hard to tell… maybe Melanson isn’t a good goalie coach or something… the potential for both is there, but they haven’t been proving it night after night…
Honestly thinking… I think we’d win as many games with Halak + Price in nets, and get something for Huet… we won’t want or need him next year…
my 2¢…
PS - Bring us Hossa! Ryder + Danis + 2nd round pick in 2010 (Hossa is technically a rental player, so we can’t give much more than that…if we had a guaranteed 2 more years…that would be different)
It now appears that Calgary has decided not to trade Tanguay.
So Sundin, and now Tanguay off the trading board. Is it possible we could end up with nobody? I’m starting to get really bummed out.
He has improved the last 4 games… but enough to keep him? I doubt it…
If Ryder doesn’t go, we’ve always wasted a lot of time…lol
It REALLLY looks like we will see action tommorow, would be nuts if it’s Hossa and he plays tommorow night against Atlanta…has that ever happened before?
gentlemen what would happen if we get nobody, how many of you guys will be upset?? Because it really looks like we will not get Hossa, I have no inside infomation on this matter but it`s a feeling I have…why us and not Detroit or Ottawa?…now Tanguay is off the radar so the offers for Hossa will be huge and are the Habs ready to give up more then they offered for a rental player.
That’s why I think the habs will be after Prospal, Fedorov, Peca, Perrault, Recchi, or Stoll. But don’t be surprised if they also go after Jokinen.
I do think there is still a chance for Hossa, though, as Montreal does have very good prospects to move.
Barriehabfan you atre so right montral has VERY GOOD PROSPECTS so why give them up for a shot at one cup . Believe me there is many more cups in the future. I mean our future. Just my 2 cents.
my stomach is turning in anticipation for this dead line, we need someone to play with koivu, poor guy is struggling cuz no one on his line is stepping up. he’s not a goal scorer, we makes plays….we need someone for him, and to take some reassure of kovi’s line. i hope we can get hossa, and sign him right away to an extension for a couple of years….i read somewere, i think it was on sportsnet.ca that atlanta was interested in, higgins, chipchura and grabovski. whould you guys make that trade???? its a little much i think…i would go something like: ryder, huet, draft pick…wat do u all think?
Well my feeling is that if we cannot get anyone front line player then we trade our UFA for as many prospects or draft picks we can get. Huet will not be here next year and Brisebois, Ryder either. So we better get something for them before they leave. To be serious, all is not lost if we do not get a front line player. After watching the team play the last three games there is no way this team is going to win the cup playing like that and I would rather see us give our yound players some playoff experience in preparation for next year our 100th anniversary. Lets face it that has been the target date for this team anyway. Hopefully, we can pick up a couple of good free agents this summer and be prepared for 2008-2009. We could use a front line defensive defenceman as well.
CH2009 has a good idea if TB would go for it. They do need a goalie and at sometime we need to get a first round pick in the top five soon in order to find that offensive superstar we have been looking for. I am surprised at that trade with Phily. Picard and a 3rd does not help their offense and I am not so sure that Picard is their answer on defence.
basically Philly got Prospal for nothing. he has 29 goals. How come Gainey didn’t go get him? we missed the boat on that one. But Holmgren is a very aggressive GM, unlike ours.
LOL so what they got Prospal , why do you feel the need to question everything? What do you know about him? Who cares what other teams are doing, lets see what happens and when it is all said and done then we will have all the fodder we need to fire our mouths off eh !!
trade huet to tampa for their #1 pick? are you nuts? Huet’s not worth a #1 pick, plus he’s a ufa this summer,
once again every trade idea on this site is basically trade ryder and huet for the other team’s best player
you’re telling us you wouldn’t give up a Picard like player and a third round pick for a 29 goal scorer? you must be on crack! not that he alone would win us a cup but it’s a pretty good step in the right direction. philly lost nothing and gained a lot.
also maybe we should get Gratton from TB, centerman, big and strong, and great on faceoffs. I bet we could get him for a prospect.
1 thing is for sure. Gainey can’t come away empty handed. he has to get a winger who can score, otherwise we’re screwed!
why do you people say we can’t score? last time i checked we were in the TOP 5 for goals scored? where did all these goals come from? oh ya i forgot the nhl just hands out goals left and right…it’s not like we are suffering in that department, if no deal is made we are not doomed!
We are getting Hossa and to that you had a Holik or Recchi, Wadell is really interested in the kids we have in the American league, people wake up, I’m really tired of reading, keep the kids, get round picks hello, Am I dumb or what ? We have more prospect that we can even put on our lineup ……. Most of them will end their Careers in the farm team of the Canadiens since we have too many. We gotta give a chance to a few and take advantage of the situation.
Yes we have good young stock, and I get the feeling we will end up with something , as I have stated it could be something we are not expecting also, only one day to go people … peace out
The good news is that if we don’t get Hossa, it probably means some other team (like Ottawa) overpaid for him. The Habs are a good young team that are only getting better. Hossa is UFA at the end of the year and, barring an agreement that only the Habs and a few other teams (not Ottawa) have cap room to make, Hossa is a playoff rental. Would we really want to lose Chris Higgins forever for the sake of a rental player? Pas mois.
Don could well be right. There are a lot of rumours out there regarding players being moved that haven’t been spoken of until now. Including Malkin if you can beleive that.
I could see Malkin moving to New York in exchange for the New York Rangers, Madison Square Gardens, the Statue of Liberty and a third round pick in 2008.
If we get Hossa I’ll be happy. Except for the fact that Higgins might have to go. If that happens. I say we chant Gainey sucks! at the thrashers game. But it isn’t hossa’s fault so chant Hossa after just to make him feel better. It’s just between Montreal and Ottawa right now. Bob Gainey and Brian Murray are probably going at it!lol If higgins is involved gainey DON’T DO IT!!! Get a little player like Jarret Stoll or Chris Gratton!
and (superfan), you do have a really good point, It’s just that we have a chance to improve our team, and we all want to come first so we can go 4-0 against the Bruins! We’re 3rd among scoring(pretty sure). Hossa would take us to #1 or #2.
Have faith boy’s … look at where we are now in standings , we are not in any real trouble , Its not in Bob’s makeup to trade the house for a rental, he is more the type that would not do that, He wont give away for a rental, Hossa will either be here long term , or he came over for something we can gamble away now… Does Bob look like he dont know what he is doing? Dallas anyone? Oh ye of little faith!!!
Grabovski is too small to play for the habs, Lapierre is a 3rd or 4th liner and really not great defensively, and of course Ryder is UFA and not figuring in the future on this team. I would definitely not mind this, even if we include a pick.
TFP reporting that most other teams, including Ottawa and Boston, are out of the Hossa race. An Atlanta source says the price-tag is too high. This leaves Montreal in the running.
HUET traded to Washington for a 2nd round draft pick. YAHOO!!!!!!!
Thank god he’s gone. we really was playing bad, letting in multiple soft goals/game.
I don’t know what to make of the Huet trade just yet. I’ll refrain from
comment until the end of the deadline. Price has proved that in time
he will emerge into a force - but that time is not just yet. I think the
present pressure will kill him. In my opinion it is Halak who can step
right in there on a consistent basis and get the job done.
Patrick sound dead on. Huet for a second round draft pick sounds like a horrible trade. Huet is worth at least a 1st round draft pick. The Canadiens must have dumped his 2+ million dollar salary, and don’t have to sign him for 6+ million next several years. I’m surprised that he wasn’t included in the Hossa trade! I curious what comes next. Maybe the Canadiens recalled Grabovski for the Hossa trade.
Not sure I’m a big fan of the “rent a body for the playoffs” school of thought. Sure, having Hossa would be fun, I suppose, but most analysts agree that he would be a short-ter rental, and unlikely to sign with the team this summer. We have a team that is playing well and winning as a team. I can’t imagine that throwing a journeyman in there–no matter how talented–would be a good thing.
I agreed with Sundin’s justification for staying in Toronto. For winning the cup to mean anything, you have to have gone through the entire season with the team. The other great thing about him staying there is that he makes the Leafs too competitive to end up in the basement and have a shot at Stamkos/Doughty. Ha! Stupid Leaves …
WE DIDN’T GET HOSSA! PITT DID! DAMN YOU GAINEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
leave it up to Gainey to do NOTHING! as USUAL! last year did squat, and again this year NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so, again we only have 1 line! NO PLAYOFFS GUYS!
I’m happy, in a way. Look what Pitsburgh had to give up. We’d have had to give up Higgins, a bunch of prospects, and a first round pick for a rental. Not a good deal for Pittsburgh. It wouldn’t have been a good deal for Montreal.
Gaigney didn’t give up on the players in the room. Pitsburgh lost some good talent for this year only. They won’t be able to sign Hossa once Crosby and Malkin’s rookie contracts expire.
The Habs are fighting for first in the East, putting together a great year and Gainey’s only move on deadline day is to give away his starting goalie for nothing. Pathetic. They probably wouldn’t have made the finals, but at least go far to give the young guys some experience. No, they’ve given up already, like every other year. It’s hard to root for a team that obviously cares less about their success than their fans do.
Calm down, kids! You all bought the hype, but the fact is you all know Hossa was NEVER a good fit for the Habs. I’d even surmise that Gainey never even made an offer for his services. That said, I’m pretty sure Tanguay or Campbell would have been a good fit, and Gainey probably made some moves in that direction, but credit him for having the restraint not to succumb to deadline fever.
For better or worse, we now have our team for the rest of the season. And make no mistake, it IS a playoff team.
I just don’t understand. Has this team made any good trades in the last 10-15 years? The way this organization treats it’s goaltenders…even if Price is the next Roy, he’ll be gone in two seasons after he loses three games in a row. I’m just glad Montreal didn’t have the chance to draft Crosby. He would have been dealt for a funny looking mascot and a left skate four months later. Unbelievable.
I wonder if I’m going to hear all about how we tried to get players, but they just didn’t
want to play in Montreal… or is that song reserved for July 1st.
Drafting and scouting are definite strong points to this organization, but, trading has not been
particularly gratifying for this team in recent years.
If Gainey is still the GM next year, I’m skipping trade deadline day, because Gainey NEVER does anything anyways! can’t sign any UFA’a and can’t make any deals! sooooooooooooooo angry with Gainey!
Xtrahabsfan
I know you’re not the biggest Huet fan - but I just refuse to believe that basically
throwing him away for next to nothing was the right thing to do. To be honest
I’m a little disappointed right now.
hey CH2009 if gainey is stil the GM next year….are you on crack????
watch the boys play well tonight now that the trade deadline is over.
look what Pittsburg gave up for Hossa…….way too much for a rental player
The Atlanta Thrashers have traded sniper Marian Hossa and winger Pascal Dupuis to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for prospect Angelo Esposito, forwards Colby Armstrong and Erik Christensen and a first-round pick.
And it isn’t even Washington’s 2nd round pick in 2009. According to TSN, it’s actually Anaheim’s. Not getting Hossa, or anyone, I can live with. But that in conjuction with throwing your #1 goalie away? After you make it known that you’re interested in doing something big? I need someone to explain this to me. Now, do I watch Montreal get beat by Atlanta tonight, or just take a break from the madness?
I think the issue with Huet is rather simple. Gainey didn’t believe he could win with Huet. With this mentality, you might as well let him go and get SOMETHING for him. He’s a UFA, so they would have lost him.
So how come he only got a 2nd round draft pick? I think it’s really comes down to confidence. Huet is a lot like Theodore.. When he’s on his game, he’s very very good. When he’s not, he stinks up the place worse than a skunk run over by a transport on a highway - he stinks. Lately, Huet hasn’t given Gainey and I believe most GMs in the league that he’s currently worth his salary.
Sure it’s unfortunate, but at least we got a 2nd round pick instead of losing him, because I’m definitely sure Gainey would NOT have signed Huet this year.

I’m starting to get a sinking feeling.

with all our prospects, we really can afford to give up a couple, without it hurting us. The real blue chippers won’t be traded.
February 25th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
my stomach is turning in anticipation for this dead line, we need someone to play with koivu, poor guy is struggling cuz no one on his line is stepping up. he’s not a goal scorer, we makes plays….we need someone for him, and to take some reassure of kovi’s line. i hope we can get hossa, and sign him right away to an extension for a couple of years….i read somewere, i think it was on sportsnet.ca that atlanta was interested in, higgins, chipchura and grabovski. whould you guys make that trade???? its a little much i think…i would go something like: ryder, huet, draft pick…wat do u all think?

February 25th, 2008 at 10:10 pm
I’m watching the sens-leafs game. 5-0 leafs in Ottawa. Boy do the sens look horrible. And we thought our D was bad?
February 25th, 2008 at 10:24 pm

word is habs are offering Ryder, Grabovski, Lapierre for Hossa.
February 26th, 2008 at 11:12 am
Hossa to Montreal
Maxim Lapierre, Michael Ryder, Grabovski and a pick could be heading to Atlanta
This is the word on the street…
I wouldn’t be against this, I am not a big Lapierre fan so far…

THE PRICE IS RIGHT!
GO HABS GO!

Why would they not have seen if they ould have gotten more they need a tough playing forward so they could protect their stars

Thank-you and see you Huet, here comes the great tandum oh Halak and Price ,the king is dead, god bless the king!

comment until the end of the deadline. Price has proved that in time
he will emerge into a force - but that time is not just yet. I think the
present pressure will kill him. In my opinion it is Halak who can step
right in there on a consistent basis and get the job done.
Wow!!…I hope I’m right.
February 26th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Huet must have been moved for a pick to clear up cap room for someone big!
February 26th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
Patrick sound dead on. Huet for a second round draft pick sounds like a horrible trade. Huet is worth at least a 1st round draft pick. The Canadiens must have dumped his 2+ million dollar salary, and don’t have to sign him for 6+ million next several years. I’m surprised that he wasn’t included in the Hossa trade! I curious what comes next. Maybe the Canadiens recalled Grabovski for the Hossa trade.
February 26th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
in addition to Hossa, habs should try to get Peca, plays center, great at faceoffs and good defensive forward.
February 26th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
February 26th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
I wanna hear about Hossa soon… time is ticking away…
February 26th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
HOT OF THE PRESS ……………
Montreal got:
HOSSA in return for Higgins, Lapierre, Grabovski & Ryder
&
OLAF KOLZIG & 2 round pick in 2009 In return for HUET
February 26th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
where you getting that… not true
February 26th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
I realize that cap space has been cleared, but as it stands at the moment
we’ve lost out on the Huet trade.
I haven’t heard any more news out of Montreal… Still some time left, however.
February 26th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
ummm. only about 5 mins left now… cuttin it pretty close if something else is in the works
February 26th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
WE DIDN’T GET HOSSA! PITT DID! DAMN YOU GAINEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
February 26th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
Hossa to Pits….. hmmm Lacavier? theres still time… theres still time… lol
February 26th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
leave it up to Gainey to do NOTHING! as USUAL! last year did squat, and again this year NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so, again we only have 1 line! NO PLAYOFFS GUYS!
February 26th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!1
February 26th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
Pittsburg gave up a bunch of players for him…..who cares he chokes in the playoffs.
February 26th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
WTF GAINEY?!
February 26th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
I’m happy, in a way. Look what Pitsburgh had to give up. We’d have had to give up Higgins, a bunch of prospects, and a first round pick for a rental. Not a good deal for Pittsburgh. It wouldn’t have been a good deal for Montreal.
Gaigney didn’t give up on the players in the room. Pitsburgh lost some good talent for this year only. They won’t be able to sign Hossa once Crosby and Malkin’s rookie contracts expire.
February 26th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
The Habs are fighting for first in the East, putting together a great year and Gainey’s only move on deadline day is to give away his starting goalie for nothing. Pathetic. They probably wouldn’t have made the finals, but at least go far to give the young guys some experience. No, they’ve given up already, like every other year. It’s hard to root for a team that obviously cares less about their success than their fans do.
February 26th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
And don’t underestimate that second round pick in 2009. He or she could win the playoffs for us in 2015. LOL. Omg we’re screwed.
February 26th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
Calm down, kids! You all bought the hype, but the fact is you all know Hossa was NEVER a good fit for the Habs. I’d even surmise that Gainey never even made an offer for his services. That said, I’m pretty sure Tanguay or Campbell would have been a good fit, and Gainey probably made some moves in that direction, but credit him for having the restraint not to succumb to deadline fever.
For better or worse, we now have our team for the rest of the season. And make no mistake, it IS a playoff team.
Go Habs!
February 26th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
What do you mean “Gainey didn’t give up on the players in the room” He gave up Huet for a bag of pucks.
February 26th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
Ok so looks like we will not make any big move , not sure I understand the Huet idea here … just dont know
February 26th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
Pitt definitely overpaid!
February 26th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
when they win the cup, who will care what they gave up! Hossa, Crosby , Malkin, Staal. they’re loaded with talent! and we have 1 line!
February 26th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
I just don’t understand. Has this team made any good trades in the last 10-15 years? The way this organization treats it’s goaltenders…even if Price is the next Roy, he’ll be gone in two seasons after he loses three games in a row. I’m just glad Montreal didn’t have the chance to draft Crosby. He would have been dealt for a funny looking mascot and a left skate four months later. Unbelievable.
February 26th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
They have so many stars just call them “The Milky Way”
February 26th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
Gainey is all talk and no action! I will never believe him again! and he kkeps Ryder and gets nothing for him! real smart move Bib!
February 26th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
I wonder if I’m going to hear all about how we tried to get players, but they just didn’t
want to play in Montreal… or is that song reserved for July 1st.
Drafting and scouting are definite strong points to this organization, but, trading has not been
particularly gratifying for this team in recent years.
February 26th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
sorry for the typo errors.
February 26th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
I think all in all,it’s all good.i’ve been asking for Huet to move on for some time now, can’t wait for Halak, right on Bob!
February 26th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
Not getting Hossa was like a kick in the Nuts.
February 26th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
If Gainey is still the GM next year, I’m skipping trade deadline day, because Gainey NEVER does anything anyways! can’t sign any UFA’a and can’t make any deals! sooooooooooooooo angry with Gainey!
February 26th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
Xtrahabsfan
I know you’re not the biggest Huet fan - but I just refuse to believe that basically
throwing him away for next to nothing was the right thing to do. To be honest
I’m a little disappointed right now.
February 26th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
Is this it guys, or can there be a deal still going down?
February 26th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
lol, we actually did worst than last year lol. At least we got Gorges last year. Go Bob Go lol
February 26th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
hey CH2009 if gainey is stil the GM next year….are you on crack????
watch the boys play well tonight now that the trade deadline is over.
look what Pittsburg gave up for Hossa…….way too much for a rental player
The Atlanta Thrashers have traded sniper Marian Hossa and winger Pascal Dupuis to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for prospect Angelo Esposito, forwards Colby Armstrong and Erik Christensen and a first-round pick.
February 26th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
Not angry here, sometimes the price is too high, we will see how Pittsburgh does with him.
February 26th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
And it isn’t even Washington’s 2nd round pick in 2009. According to TSN, it’s actually Anaheim’s. Not getting Hossa, or anyone, I can live with. But that in conjuction with throwing your #1 goalie away? After you make it known that you’re interested in doing something big? I need someone to explain this to me. Now, do I watch Montreal get beat by Atlanta tonight, or just take a break from the madness?
February 26th, 2008 at 4:33 pm
