Blues Funk

Tonight the Habs have a rare meeting at home against the St-Louis Blues.

The St-Louis Blues reached the post season for over 20 consecutive years. A league record. That streak ended in 2006.

This season the Blues have very quietly dipped lower and lower in the standings to currently being 27th overall, losing their last 10 road games.

The Blues have the league’s worst powerplay and only 1 more win than the league’s worst L.A Kings.

Simply put, a must win game for the Canadiens.

Habman, I guess you do not read very well, I was upset that we did not get two points against the lowly blues, but at this time of the season we have to put our best game forward otherwise any team can beat you. I do like the thought of bring up some beaf for the playoffs, but I also know we cannot go into the playoffs thinking we are going to push other teams around, we just have to make sure that we do not take any crap that all and maybe some beef will help as long as they are intellegent about it.

Iceman I predict that we will win half of those games against TO and OTT. But I sort of like second place better than first in the overall conference. I don’t agree with a lot that Habman says but one think I do agree with if Washington gets into the playoffs they will be tough to beat, and we have trouble agains those type of teams, it is the reason we have trouble with Ottawa, same type of team, and Huet will want to prove that Montreal should not have traded him so he will be tough.

Firstly, I agree with Pactum serva, after all we are in first place in our division and 2nd in our conference, no we have not made the playoffs just yet but I like our position in comparison to where we were last year. Secondly, I agree with halifer to a point, we do seem to come out in a lot of games slow and gradually build momentum, there are some games though that we get so far behind it is difficult to get that momentum. Then you run into a hot goalie and its game over. I did not see the game tonite, who took the shoutout shots?

Posted on March 19th, 2008 at 12:19 am. About 'Blues Funk'.

I agree we are not in the playoffs yet but the 9th place team would have to win 5 of their last 8 games to tie us while we would have to loose all 8 games. So where as last year we needed 93 points to make the play offs we are only three points from that position we should win at least 4 of our last 8 games, that gives us 98 I believe that 94 will be more than enough to make the playoffs.

Seems alot of people have the same thing to say. The same thing we were all talking about, a month ago. The fact that we are spineless with no grit, toughness or balls is raising its ugly head again. It’s not going away this time though. It’s 8 games from the playoffs and most teams are getting into this mode now…getting revved up for some hard nosed playoff hockey. Not us.
Our skill level in undenyable….but folks, we’re the same team that lets apponents push, slap and knock us around. No taking liberties to clear people out of the front of the net, even when its uncalled for, like other teams do to send a message. Sue Kovy of all guys seems to be the one with the biggest balls lately.
Our skill level is not being given as much free-reign as it was all season. Most teams as I said are tightening up now for a playoff push where just pure skill just have as much impact as it did in the middle of the season. And without our skilled players being able to fly high, what do we have then? Most of our forwards expend more energy trying not to take a hit along the boards then they do trying to make a play, and our 4th line is really a joke.
We have had a terrific season. An exciting season where we played above expectations, and many fans like myself are very grateful for that. But gentlemen, weather we finish 1st or 8th, the lack of physically tough play to the point where the opposition fears coming into our zone will indeed have an impact on our advancement. Everyone knows that without true toughness and grit in playoff hockey, it’s very unlikely of a team progressing very far…and as much as it pains me to say…..that even applies to our precious Habs. And whats boggling about this is shouldn’t Carbo and Gainey know this above anyone?
Lets finish the season strong, see if we can figure out the Sens, and see what kinda push we can make. But guys, unlike Leaf fans, reality has to set in at some point about our most probable playoff outcome. GO HABS GO !!!

You people out here make me laugh so lets start……

First of all why are you all down and out about our shoot-out loss last night? We took 3 of 4 points against non paly-off teams, that sits fine with me….could have been much worse. Its not liek the Blue slaughtered us, or made us embarrased…we lost in a shootout for gods sake i mean suck it up! Who cares who Carbo gave the night off to….and what is this about a playoff run??? We are already in the playoffs! We are not scrambling for a spot. We are in, we know we are in and we know we will have at the very least a top 6th spot…if not a top three spot.

      Moving on……

Here is a suggestion for Mr. Gainey….try to lure Mikko Koivu from the Wild for next season. The addition of kid bro will up Saku’s game and encourage him to end his career in Montreal where is started. A second successful bro dual liek we already have it the Kostisyn brothers would be great to see. Mikko is an up and comer and would make a great thrid line centre for us to be groomed for a top 1 or 2 spot.

90 points with 8 games to play….will we hit the 100 point mark???? We need to win 5 of 8 games, all against our divison….half against non playoff teams….seemingly we may be in control of weather or not the sabres or Leafs make the playoffs….and how sweet it will be to pay back the Leafs for eliminating us last year on the last day of the schedule.

I WILL PREDICT NOW WE WILL WIN THE NE DIVISON AND FINISH SECOND OVERALL IN THE CONFERANCE. WE WILL PLAY BOSTON FIRST ROUND AND SWEEP THEM.

win that series. The teams I would like to avoid are: Rangers, Jersey, and the
Senators. Even though Ott has significantly weaker goaltending than the other

The Canadians don’t need an enforcer because they have an excellent power-play, but they do need a Claude Lemieux or a Sean Avery who can keep the other team thinking–or “not thinking”–all game long. Whenever the other team pushes someone in front of the net, our Claude Lemieux could just take a little drink out of the other goalie’s water bottle and see what happens. Punch in the face? Spear in the chumlies? Any of these outcomes put us on the power-play.

If the other team hits Grabosky and pushes the Katstisyn brothers around, our Claude Lemieux could clear his nostrils into his hand and wipe it on the top of the boards in front of the other team’s bench. Where is Claude anyway? He’d b be a great coach to have.

We haven’t made the playoffs yet? Are you high?

As to losing to the Blues, it happens… to all teams. It’s the bloody NHL, and even the bad teams can be tough to beat when they’re inspired. So they came up short last night. Irritating, but utterly meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

As to the notion of the Leafs making the playoffs, are YOU high? They’ve done this three years in a row - play below .500 up to the deadline, and then play their hearts out when nothing’s on the line. They’re a spoiler and nothing more. And Leafs fans are among the most gullible consumers out there for buying the BS commitment to winning that that corporation sells to them year after year after year.

On the other hand, the Habs, the last Canadian team to win it all, is currently sitting second in the East with 8 games remaining, and some are still have the audacity to compare them to the fucking Maple Leafs.

Who care how many points they have .. and let’s be real and not blame Halak for that match , where was his defence? They hung him out to dry more than a few times in that game, and we are in the playoff’s, its simple math, unless we can’t make 3 points out of 16 , and if we can’t then we don’t deserve to be in the playoff’s . Washington got smoked by Chi-town tonight , thats gonan hurt them some for sure …

Hey Jack Hab, I am not so sure I would want to face Washington in the first round, they play like Ottawa and these are the types of teams we seem to have trouble with. The like to skate and speed is their game, similar to ours only difference is that they have some super stars that we do not have. That is the reason we have trouble with them, unfortunately, we have to adjust our game to cope with their speed and skill level in order to beat them. I am not saying we cannot beat them but we seem to do better against the slower teams like Boston, Phily and even Jersey although I not so sure I would want to meet them in the first round either.

As far as making the playoffs, we have a 10 point lead over the 9th place team so 94 points should be enough to make the playoffs, hopefully we get 100 though.

Ice Man you seem to like to belittle everyone who has a different opinion than you do, I agree that we do not have a team that is good enough to win the cup but stranger things have happened think back to 1993, this is a young team and if we get two rounds in the playoff this team is going to grow which should set up very well for next year. Let’s face it we still have some missing parts, and one of them has always been a strong centre who can win faceoffs. I agree we need some muscle but that muscle has to be able to play hockey, (think back to the 1976 to 1979 teams we mainly had muscle who had some skill) these are areas that hopefully we can address in the off season.

And who knows, if all the cards fall into place and there are some upsets in the playoffs, we have as good a chance as anyone.

We are probably going to finish 2nd or 4th in the conference. This would mean playing either Washington,Boston or Philly if we finish 2nd . If we finish 4th we would play either Pittsburgh,New Jersey or NY Rangers. Gee I hope we finish 2nd. The only problem with 2nd that I can see is if Washington gets the number 7 seed, how bad would Gainey look if Cristobal Huet comes back to bite him in the you know what. That is why you never trade an impact player within your conference at the trade deadline. How does everyone else feel about this very strong possibility.

      1. As a hockey fan, it would be a very exciting series.
      2. The ‘who’s better in net’ debate will be solved.
      3. IMO we have a more complete hockey team.
      4. I never liked the idea of trading Huet for a ‘wait and see’ type of player, but he’s
gone now and I’d love to personally escort him to the golf course.

Yeah I realize Washington has miles to go… it’s just something I’d like to see.

Ice Man I respect your opinions, don’t get me wrong, just have a little respect for other opinions as well, disagree that ok, we are not going to agree with everything each other say. That’s all I would like to see.

Hab Jack, regardless of whether we played Washington or not, to me it would prove nothing, Huet was a good goaltender but not a great goaltender, if we play him and he beats us, I agree it would not look good but Huet had to go, otherwise we would not have anything for him, the second rounder may or maynot be a good player some day be at least we did not loose him like Souray for nothing. Personally, I am afraid of Washington especially in the first round, not becaue they are a better team, but because they play the type of game that we have trouble with and Obviously Huet has something to prove.

Washington is close–one point out of eighth–but I think they’ll need to run the table to get in as the team around them all have at least one game at hand on them, Boston (the team ahead of them) has two. They’ll need a lot of help.

Joseph you are correct, however, if we can beat Boston again tomorrow night, Washington has a chance since they won tonight. Boston and Phily have not been playing that well lately so they have an a chance.

I also note the New Jersey lost tonight tothe Islanders. That gives us the advantage since if Jersey ties us we have the better record against them. I think that is the first tie breaker??

As far as I understand it, that is the first tie breaker. But they’ve also got game at hand on the Habs, as do the Penguins. Either way, I’d be just as happy with second as I would with first… and this isn’t to suggest that the Habs won’t get first - they still might.

I agree, I would just not want to face a team like Washington in the first round. First round upsets are always a concern. Washington has been playing some of the best hockey in the league of late and they are the type of team that we have trouble with.
