Habs / Bruins: Game 2

Game 1 of the series went pretty much according to the script.
Tim Thomas was beaten early and easily and the Bruins still can’t score goals.
Perhaps the only surprises were the Canadiens being the far more physical of the two teams and maybe some unexpected goal scoring from Tom Kostopolous and Bryan Smolinski.
What changes will Claude Julien make to avoid Boston’s 13th consecutive loss against the Canadiens?
What can he do?
The Bruins have yet to even have a one goal lead this season against Montreal. Short of a Tim Thomas miracle, there’s no reason to believe game 2 won’t unfold the same way as the previous 12.

Habs game 1 “unexpected” physical appearance was not only prepared for Boston, but also for deep playoff games. Well done, prepared Carbo!

As per CBC.
For both Koivu and Bouillon, Carbonneau mentioned, the Canadiens situation is not urgent enough to rush either of them back into the lineup, especially since the team is playing very well in their absence.
“We’re going to give them both time to heal completely, so that when they do come back it will be for the long run and not just for one or two games,”
Carbonneau said. “If this was Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final, I think both of them would be able to play.”

Smart move, no doubt. And if they get off to the same start tonight, then there should be no pressure to change this approach by game’s end. I like it.

habs are very lucky to be up 1-0 . They were totally flat, no energy, skating in slow motion. They better start skating in the 2nd period, or else!

Well you had to expect Boston to come out stronger after the first game and we did get two penalties which sort of put us back on our heals a bit. The important part was our PK was still very good and Price did what he had to do. Komy is back blocking shots, looks stronger this game.

That goal had to deflat the bruins after have one of their best periods against us. I expect that carbo will get them charged up a little more for the second.

Stronger second period, Hamrlik is playing the best defence of his life. I think he is are best defensemen right now and that says a lot considering we have Markov, Komy and Streit and supporting cast.

Koivu is a big part of our powerplay … we will be fine it will come back its been #1 all year no reason for that to change now..

Emotional reaction:
I’m sorry, guys, but I just don’t see a potential Stamley Cup champion in this team right now. The inconsistent effort (show up for one game, fail to show up for the next game), the undisciplined play and resulting penalities (it was only a matter of time before they got burned), the all of a sudden anemic powerplay (try shooting the f**king puck every once in a while), and the fact that Kovalev has been a complete non-factor in games 1 and 2 all point to a team that simply isn’t good enough to go all the way. Hell, another effort like this one and they might not get out of this series, regardless of what transpires tonight.

Kovalev took a selfish penalty and put us down 5-3, as good a play as he is this is the type of penalty a team captain is not suppose to take. He is suppose to show leadership and that certainly was lack of leadership taking that penalty. Maybe this is the reason why a European captain has never won the cup?

habs aren’t playing well. If Kovalev scores on the breakaway, we win. Instead he takes an undisciplined penalty.Where the hell is Kovalev in the 1st 2 games? And where is our PP? 0-10 won’t win you a series!
Habs are unable to play 2, 60 minute games in a row! How can you come out flat for a playoff game? This team doesn’t have enough grit.
I totally agree with Joseph. If this crowd can’t get you motivated to show up, then you don’t deserve to win! If the bruins win this game, they’re taking the series! S

Well I think you have to give the team more credit than that, they came out flat fought back and seemed to think that they had the game in the bag. a couple of bad penalties and Boston ties the game. I am disappointed with Kovalev he needs to show more leadership and we got to start shooting the puck on the power play. Carbo may think that Koivu will have to come back earlier than planned. How come we stopped hitting. Again I think the team just felt all they had to do was show up for the third period. Big Mistake.

Whatever about the bandwagon - I’ve followed this team through thick and thin since the 70s. And one bad game can change a series. If Boston ever finds a way to beat Montreal this season (and the Habs are seemingly doing everythitng that they can to help them accomplish this task tonight), then that might just be be all that the Bruins need. Have you considered this?
Sometimes I get tired of hoping that grossly overpaid athletes find reason to get motivated enough to bring some form of temporary enjoyment to me the fan. I think I’ve become a bad fan.

I think that Kovalev may have learned a lesson tonight, I don’t see him taking another penalty like that, he knew he had to win this game for us because his name was mud had we lost. Did you see the number of times he had a chance to shoot and score in the prolonged power play. Hopefully the team learned something tonight.

When this many kids play in their first NHL playoff’s we will have to go through all the hoops, the up’s and down’s , but to start dumping on them is just plain wrong, Yes Kovy I think knew exactly that , he needed to load the AK27 and send it home …

Poor Don Cherry crying and moaning about the Bruins getting robbed.
Potentially a back breaker loss for Boston.
Habs dont show up to play tonight and they still win it.
Boston has to be wondering what they have to do to beat us.
Win tomorrow night gives us a stranglehold on the series.

Joseph, I agree and understand what you were saying, I do think that if we lost tonight it could have changed the momentum of the series, and we would have had a much harder time winning the series. Let’s face it if we win the series could be over in 4 or 5 but if we loose it could go 7. I also agree that these guys should be self motivated to show up in the playoff. To me this was a wake up call to the team, Boston is not going to roll over and let us win this series. we better go back to the original game plan, skate, hit and check , something we did not do too much tonight. I still have faith.

I apologize for my lack of hockey sense, but I did call this series to go 5. It’s just that there’s a difference between losing Game 2 on home ice (to even the series) and losing Game 3 or 4 in Boston.
I agree, Senet 1. And that goal was huge because:
- It was scored by Kovalev.
- It was scored on the PP (finally!).
- It was the GWG.
- It salvaged what could have been a blown win in the third, which could have been a huge momentum changer.
Maybe Kovalev needs to feel responsible to perform in the playoffs. Remember the the 3-1 deficit to Boston several seasons ago? How could you forget.

I think Don hit the nail on the head, we have a very young team and they are going to have their ups and downs while they gain experience in the playoffs, this is why we need the leadership that Kovalev has to show. Taking selfish penalties is not good leadership, i am glad he redeemed himself and I think even he learned something tonight.

This was my biggest concern. They were lucky to get away with the victory. Boston might be a bad team when it come to playing the Habs, but Price saved their arses tonight. That’s for sure.

Regardless of the cause(s), this team will have to play better to have a legitimate shot at a championship. Imagine what would have resulted with that kind of effort against, say, Pittsburgh. Yikes. Not good enough.

I haven’t abandoned my faith. I just feel that I wasn’t watching a potential Stamley Cup champion on the ice tonight. I think that most would agree. They’ll have to be a lot better to achieve that goal.

I agree, Price was very good and he is gaining the experience he is going to need as the playoffs progress. I am amazed that a 20 year old is as good as he is and as confident. We all know he is going to make some mistakes but I like the way he plays goal and I like the way he handles the puck.
I watch the Philly / Caps games last night and Philly took advantage of Huet handling the puck for a while but then they stopped forechecking late int he game and without the forecheck Huet can’t make any mistakes with the puck. Philly had that game won and stopped skating and forecheck, remind you of any othe team we know.

Joseph, I have said all along that this team was being built for next year, the fact that it matured a year early is great because it gives us that experience that we will need for future playoff years. I all get overly excited when we see our team play so good one night and then we come back down to earth the next night when we realize that maybe they just are ready yet to win it all. I am not saying that they can’t go all the way but your points are well taken in that they have to learn consistency if they are going to win it all.

Yeah, I watched that game too. And I think that that’s what set alarm bells off in my head tonight. I strongly feel that the Habs are a much better team than they show at times, and it’s those times when they fall short that might end up costing them. I’m kind of pissed that they seemed to take the win for granted in the third period tonight.
And Price is amazing. He’s the reason I didn’t have a full blown panic attack after Boston tied it up tonight. He simply doesn’t get rattled.

1. Never expected Habs playing “physically” like game 1, but the game 2 was just too “up side down”. Carbo should learn lesson from it.
2. Kovalev’s penalty was just too “juvenile”. This was unaccepted as “C”!!!
3. Les boys, just regard Bruins as a regular playoff team. No matter how many wins, the “next” game is alway the 50-50 competition.
Bottom line in Boston: 1-1. Let’s finish the round 1 at Bell Centre!

Yes you are right about Price, I never had the kind of confidence when Huet was in the net. He sort of reminds me of the confidence we use to have when Patrick Roy was are goalie.

I think the habs have been reading too many newspapers or listening to the media, telling them how great a team they are. It has gone to their heads. They seem to think that all they have to do, is just step on the ice, and they will win. Hockey is about playing for 60 minutes, skating, checking, hitting, and a good PP. When the habs don’t skate, they’re very average, and the worst team in the league will beat them. So the habs played down to Boston’s level tonight, and luckily found a way to pull out a win. If the habs play their game and skate, then there’s no way the bruins can beat them.
JUST SKATE GUYS AND PLAY YOUR GAME! forget about what the bruins are doing, the habs just need to concentrate on what the habs need to do to win!

Our team sort of reminds of of the Oilers, they went to the finals against the Islander back in 1982 I think, the Islanders were the powerhouse of the league and had already one two straight cups, the Oilers looked very good but the Islanders with good goaltending and a solid defence taught the Oilers about playoff hocket. As you know the Oilers learned their lessons very well as the won the cup 4 out of the next 5 years.

Hey Hablifer, you got it right there, that is exactly how it looked tonight, they seemed to recover but once they got up 2-0 they seem to think they had the game won. We have to play the way we played in the first game, skate, skate skate, Hit hit hit and check check check. Our PP needs to take a look at the videos to see that they are not shooting the puck enough. Also I will say this, Markov could have scored 2 or 3 goals if he could have handled the pass tonight at the corner of the net.

Well I have to admit it like cherry for the most part except when we are playing Boston, Unfortunately, he can never get over the coaching error he made when he sent too many men on the and Lefleur scored and they lost the series. If you remove him form the Bruins he makes some good point. Hockey Night in Canada would not be the same without him. we just have to learn about his sour grapes when it comes to Montreal beating his bruins.

the game tomorrow night will be alot tougher.not just because it’s in boston, but because the bruins can’t afford to go down 3-0 . If that happens, the series is over. So the bruins will be fighting for their lives, hitting like crazy, and if the habs don’t play better, sharper, come with their A game, we’lll lose. It’s going to take (repetition) a 60 minute effort, and the habs can’t take off a period or 2. Which habs team will show up? Let’s hope it’s the same team we saw on Thursday.

Notice anything unusual about the last two games, yes they won at home, and keeping the guys in the hotel room helps them keep that analogy going, I am glad Kovalev has the monkey off his back,and don’t forget, he is wearing the ‘C” now and I think its there to stay..just like i ..well forget it, anyway Iam also glad that LaPierre didnt get to hurt from that slap shot when he took that penalty, so..its off to the bear barn to cook some meat, bring the BbQ sauce !

I also think we see a couple of changes to the lineup for tomorrow’s game. I would like to see Obyrne and maybe even the kid Stewart. I think we are going to need some toughness in our lineup for Sunday’s game.

Brisebois had played two fairly good games, although I detected a couple of giveaways tonight in our own end and blind passes up the wall when Boston was putting the pressure on us. that has always been his problem, he panicks with heavy forechecking and body contact.

Everybody outside Ontario is sick of the negative comments towards the Habs by Don Cherry and others on the CBC network, Our taxes dollars pay for this? Hey Don you like to show video’s from the past , show us all the one where you said The Leafs would make the playoff’s … Hey Don when a high stick causes bleeding its 4 minutes, look in the rule book.The Habs get no respect from CBC and its gotten to the point where people who are not Habs fans are talking abut it, Thank god we dont have to watch another Leafs game this year and soon we wont have to watch another Bruins game either … But I am sure Don will be cheering some other American team , I bet it will be the ones the Habs face next .. any takers ??

The Leafs Post Season got under way yesterday at Glenn Abbey. The Leafs were blown away by the Host Team.
Tucker got a Game Misconduct for a brutal cross check to the back of the Opposing Caddy.
McCabe got a game as well for a two handed slash to a furry little groundhog. It is believed to by Wiarton Willy but is difficult to confirm because of Decapitation.

BIG win last night boys, but we gotta pick this up. Wasn’t a very well organized game last night, and against any other team in the eastern playoffs we would have paid for it. Lets just not get into habits that we can’t shake for the next round. Don’t let the Bruins get goin here at all….take em out and get rested for the next round. All in all, great win….lets just get that #1 PP going again….it shouldn’t have went to OT. GO HABS GO !!!

That was a poorly reffed game yesterday. The Candadiens benefitted during the latter part of the game but when minor taps are considered penalties that may decide the outcome as momentum changes occur, there should be a call from the bigwigs to wake up and let the players play….Through the regular season games cross-checking, interference, hooking etc are let go and the a minor brush off, incidental hold, etc etc… come on that’s part of hockey! to a certain degree. Absolutely when things get out of hand call them then!!!
Take the win just the same. The Habs left the hitting game in the dressing room and basically too many errors throughout the game. Lucky to get the win. Especially for Price’s role he stole the game! Which is what a good goalie is supposed to do.
On to tonight’s game. Almost gave Tony fodder material. Go Habs Go!

Congrats Habs fans…nice win.
The Kovalev winner was beautiful (skill part winning here) , I thought that Thomas looked average ( and that’s weak in NHL terms ). Really wish Julien would start the Rask era tonight in Boston.
The officiating was truly horrible on both sides. The Reich penalty was a joke…but the one on Kovalev was equally weak.
The Bruins came back because the Habs let them…the speed game was missing in the 3rd for the Habs.
Like I’ve said on numberous occations (for those of you that read my blog)…speed and skill will win the series for the Habs.
Just a note on Grapes….he can kiss my a@#$@…cost us the ‘79 Cup, and I will never forgive that “Leafs” fan for that!

I not only have a problem with Don Cherry wining about the four minute penalty on Kotsopolous but even Bob Cole and Greg Millen, how excited they were getting when Boston got back in the game. Even in the 70’s when **** Irvin and Danny Gallivan were doing the games,they would never show a bias against the Maple Leafs when they were not playing Montreal. These guys are ridiculous and Cole being from the same province as Michael Ryder you would think he would show a little more vigour towards that team. This is a whole lot of jealousy from Toronto fans. Get used to it Bob and Greg it will be happening for many years to come.Did anyone else notice this last night.

Well, Senet 1, I hope that you’re right in that last night was a bit of a wake-up call for the Habs. The good thing is that we don’t have very long to wait and see if it was. I hope that they come out like they did in Game 1, crushing any hopes that might remain in that Boston locker room. Even though they’re down 2-0, the Bruins can and will take a lot of positives away from last night’s game. The Habs need to prove that their 2-0 series lead wasn’t an accident, and more importantly, they need to implement a 60-minute effort that will bring them continuous success throughout the playoffs.
Did anyone see Ward’s ridiculous interview on TSN prior to last night’s game?
