Habs / Bruins: Game 5

The Bruins have played as good as they possibly can and still find themselves down 3-1 in the series.

On the verge of elimination.

The Habs have not yet played their best and are just one game away from advancing to the second round.

91% of teams leading 3-1 end up winning the series.

The Habs and Bruins being involved in one of those few upsets. The 7th seed Canadiens came back from a 3-1 Bruins series lead to advance to the second round in 2004.

Some more offensive production from the regular season’s highest scoring team would be a welcome sign. As well as a more efficient powerplay.

With Carey Price leading the NHL Playoffs in Save Percentage and G.A.A, some more offense from the Canadiens should be enough to get it done in 5.

Mark Streit will rest an injured hip and Michael Ryder returns to the lineup.

If there ever is a reason for our stars to shine it is tonight.

We can drive the final nail in the Coffin of Bruins season and put them out of their missery.

We can then work on the elements of the Game that we are lacking before we play the 2nd round of the Playoffs.

      Lets GO GUYS ………..

Canadiens recall six from AHL Bulldogs…

The first impact of Bob Gainey’s recall action will be forcing the existing lineup players to fight for their positions (good, stay; not good, out). That’s going to be a war in Game 5! Poor Bruins.

That was the worst playoff effort I’ve seen from the Montreal Canadiens. Foot on the throat, at home, and they come out like that. Something’s going on in the locker room that we’re not aware of. Boston has punched above their weight, and Montreal below its weight, since Game 2. This isn’t good. Let’s hope someone other than just Lapierre shows up to play playoff hockey in Boston.

They quite skating and checking and a coupld of bad penalties and we are in trouble. Price mad one very rookie like mistake and the next thing we know the game is out of reach. OMG!!!!!!!!!!
What was that third periode all abou, actually throught out the whole game Montreal’s efforts weren’t very good.
I must say there were a lot of really bad penalties for Montreal and a lot of power plays that Montreal didn’t use to their advantage.
Carey still a good goalie, the 1st goal was acceptable, the 2nd goal was hit off a CANADIENS STICK and the third goal was one really bad mistake from Carey Price
After the third goal Montreal lost it’s willpower to fight. If your gonna lose, lose with dignity.
I’m sure this was just one of thoses bad games Montreal has every now and then, they’ll come back don’t worry and take the series.
Hopefully Koivu comes back soon, we need some spirit back in the team.

Hopefully this game will have been. We need to put this one behind us, and try to finish it off in Boston. I’m worried about the next game *but* I have to hope that this is the game that gets us playing again.

Price’s rookie mistake aside, this team has not shown what it takes to be a champion. The lowly Bruins (and they are lowly - don’t BS yourself) just handed them their asses in their own building.

If they put in the kind of effort that they did tonight in future games, then history will be made - they’ll lose this series. Since Montreal has never lost a series in which it lead 3-1, and Boston has never won a series in which it trailed 2-0, that would be historical.

The Habs will still win this series, for the mere reason that Boston isn’t good enough to capitalize on any kind of momentum, but it’s the near future that concerns me. Try and imagine tonight’s effort versus the Flyers, or the Penguins (if they got that far).

They’d better change something soon… unless of course this year is just being treated as some playoff experience for the young europeans for next year when they acquire some determination to go along with the skill. Right.

Well hopefully Streit is okay to play next game, we missed him bring the puck up tonight. I thought the way they came out in the first period Boston would be going home for the season. Then after we got the goal lead, we started to play differently. we stopped skating, and checking, and it allowed boston to play their game. I also got the feeling that the refs made some stupid calls in this game. The high stick on Kovalev seemed stupid, he was checked into the boards and his stick was in the area but it didn’t look like it hit anyone. I would not worry about Price we he made one mistake and then got a couple of bad luck bounces. I predict it is over in six, we win in Boston. We have not lost two straight games in along time. And I disagree we played a good solid road game in game four,Boston hardly had a scoring change the entire third period until right at the end. You guys would have gone bonkers if you watched the habs of 1971. we got outshot by 20 shots a game and we won the series. Some hockey experts said it was the best defensive team that they ever saw. We were obviously out gunned by the Bruins but we scored when we got the chance. So have faith guys.

rhabs4real, Smolinski is from Toledo, Ohio. Just FYI.

But I agree with the basic point that you’re trying to make. European skill is great, just as long as it’s complementing a healthy dose of North American grit. If that skill is allowed to dominate the personality of a team, however, well, look no further than Ottawa’s previous records in the playoffs, before they added the ingredients to go to the Finals last year, when they were dominated by the bigger, stronger and more determined Ducks in the Finals anyway. Oh, and Anaheim’s roster last season? 18 Canadians on it.

However, either Philly or Pittsburgh would destroy this Habs team if this is all that they have to bring to the table. As would New York.

Price is only Human! Price did his fair share to keep Montreal’s sorry Freakin Asses in this series. IF the Habs wanted this series and wanted to play a full 60 minutes (which they have seldom done all year) this series would have been over at 4 games and Price would not have been embarrassed. Brodeur gave up some pretty awful goals in the playoffs this year as well and he is a great Goalie. Every great Goalie will have a meltdown every now and then. I’ve seen Roy & Dryden get blown out in the playoff before.

Will Montreal learn from this? NO! They won’t. Montreal should have learned from the 2nd game that they have to score more than 1-2 goals a game to win a playoff series.

Koivu can and may play the next game, but what good will ne be? He will not be at 100%. If he is not 100%, then leave him out.

I guess that Ryder will be the whipping Boy again for this loss. Just wait til Ryder plays with Boston next year. I hope for every goal he scores on the Habs(and there will be many) he goes over to carbo and gives him every puck.

Well, Boston has won this series BUT Montreal just don’t know it yet!

Price has carried this team since he was made the #1 Goalie. Now Fans are ready to throw him under the Bus.

I am not superstitious. 2004 first round playoff, Habs won Bruins from 3-1 deficit by game 7: The head coach then was Claude Julien.

Habs and nation should raise the alert level.

Now it’s the competition between Carbo and Julien. If Carbo didn’t put his two leaders (Saku, the offense leader; Bouillon, the defense leader) onto the lineups, he would be now or never. I am not over pessimistic, but that’s the war!!!

Now it’s the time: Coaching strategy MATTERS; Leadership MATTERS!

Players have bad games, and Price is young. It doesn’t bother me at all from a worrying about winning perspective to see Price boot a game. What bothers me is the following:

Please rate the playoff performance of the following players since Game 1: Plekanec, S. Kostitsyn, A. Kostitsyn, Markov, Higgins, Ryder. [Now I consider Ryder to be lazy and useless, but he had a chance to redeem himself in the playoffs and he’s been absolutely pathetic.]

And then rate the performance of the following players since Game 1:
Kostopolous, Dandenault, Brisebois, Begin, Smolinski, Hamrlik, Lapierre and Latendresse.

With the exception of Hamrlik, the bulk of the “talent” on this team is in the first group of players. So, our big-guns are not showing up for the playoffs. And this team has been carried since game 1 by third and fourth line players. That works against Boston because they are a low skill team with lots of heart, but it won’t work against any other team.

I’d say that Kovalev, Komisarek, Gorges, and a few others are playing at about their regular season intensity.

Kovalev is somewhat of an exception, skill-wise. But one has to wonder the kind of an effect it has on the team when the guy wearing the C doesn’t listen to the coach, takes very long shifts, and takes two retaliatory penalties in the series (he didn’t get caught last night).

Let’s hope they bounce back in Game 6.

Posted on April 18th, 2008 at 11:37 am. About 'Habs / Bruins: Game 5'.

Guys, Carbonneau isn’t playing mind games with this team or the Bruins. He felt that the Habs could get the job done in the absence of Koivu and Bouillon, and thus he gave them both more time to get healthy (rather than rush them back too soon and risk a more serious injury). These were his words, and they make sense.

As to last night’s failure to close the series, it was both unfortunate and concerning. The Bruins looked defeated in the first period. Their play was sloppy and they were more or less there for the taking. The Habs should have rolled over them and established a bigger lead than 1-0. But their offensive struggles continued and they failed to bury a near dead team. And in the second period, when the Habs looked as if they were actually trying to protect a 1-0 lead for two full periods (insane), they allowed Boston back into the game. The Bruins gained confidence and converted a powerplay opportunity, and with a Price mishap to start the third, the flood gates were open (a rare occurrence for the Bruins this season). Everyone knows the rest.

The Habs showed no killer instinct at all last night, and that’s a major concern in these playoffs. If they do get by Boston, and I believe that they will, they are going to face a much more determined team in Philadelphia, and one that has no problem scoring goals. But then, the Flyers have no problem giving up goals either, so who knows. However…

First thing’s first. Price and the Habs need to delete Game 5 from memory and play a perfect road game in Boston on Saturday. They also need to play with some conviction and capitalize on their opportunities. If they do this, this series will most certainly end in 6. If they fail to do this, however, then Montreal will lose this series much more than Boston will actually win it.

Forget 1st in the East, forget the #1 offense and powerplay, forget the regular season altogether. It’s time to see what this team is truly made of.

Carbo is an IDIOT plain a simple as that.

      I couldn’t agree more, Joseph.

If we kept skating like this, we would’t be ready to compete with Flyers. The Flyers has been playing super good, especially the booed D Briere.

There are a lot of problems, such as Plekanec, Ryder, Latendresse not playing well, defense positioning and markup not good. etc… These are details. But as a whole team, they lack of “Leadership” and “Spirit”. That’s the reason SAKU and FRANCIS should be coming back to the lineups ASAP.

I hate to say this, but in a way i agree with the Boston Fans on the fact that Montreal right now has no heart. The last 2 games have been not good at all, Price is the only reason they won game 4 and well we all know what happened last night.

But, we are a much better road team anyway, we still just have to win 1 game, our pp has to get going, and off has to increase dramatically and we have to start moving our legs and not think that we can just roll over the Bruins easily.

As for the physical play, we can stand up to the Bruins, without a doubt. Komi is a maniac when he gets going, and come on, Hamerlik is the best hitter for both teams combined. As for Boston, Chara is the only real physical presence they have and he is nothing but a lanky piece of dog $hit, he is worth less than my newborns foreskin.

Price is an excellent goalie, who pretty much single handily won Games 2 & 4

      Tony from North Boston

Tony from North of Boston, Wow, please do me a favor and pack your bags and head up 93 North, to 89 North until you hit the border! Stay in Canada. You are not a Bruins fan.

How do I look like an asshole, when the Boston Bruins are basically willing their way through this series with a journeyman goaltender, and no scorers. Ok i will not say HEART and BALLS, because for this site it is too elementary.

This series should have been over in Game 3, although the Bruins have decided to make this into a series. The reason why, here is educated answer. They are working the corners, playing sound defense and they are playing unreal on the penalty killing. This series is dead even, although the Bruins are doing more with less and Julien is creating a forechecking and backchecking system that allows them to cut of half the ice and causes the Canadiens to dump in when they would rather carry the puck in. The Bruins and Julien play this system is because other than the Begin and Kostopolous line, the HABS do not like to dig for pucks and do the dirty work in the corners to get them to the place they need to be.

Carey Price, be careful HABS fans not to put to much pressure on this kid, Tony from NB, how can you saw a 20 year old is excellent, because of half a season and 4 games in a playoff series? He has the skills to be a great one, and I would LOVE TO HAVE HIM on the BRUINS! Although he is not proven at this level, has he played great yes. Although here is his weaknesses: MY EDUCATED ANALYSIS, he is a traditional butterfly goalie, he is extremely vulnerable on the blocker side upstairs as well as giving up huge rebounds of the pads. He plays with calm and poise, although his side to side movements from post to post is not that great! Now is Thomas better? HECK NO! he is crazy and gives me a heart attack! They are both playing well, yes, but please don’t tell me that this 20 year old kid is the next ROY or DRYDEN! They are hall of famer’s and you are really putting pressure on this kid. I remember you had another great goalie in the system JOSE THEODORE, he basically robbed us of the playoffs in 04, what happened then?

Tony from NB are you a Bruins fan or a bandwagon fan! You probably became a Giants fan when the Pats lost in the Superbowl. Which the Giants deserved to WIN! We digress!

HABS and BRUINS Saturday night…SERIES 3-2…Can you ask for anything more. I want to see a hungry HABS team and a hungry Bruins team! No more blowouts!

To compare Ryder with Kovalev is absolutely beyond absurd. Kovalev’s worst year was 47 pts, -19, Ryder’s great year last year is 58 pts, -25. Their skill levels are nowhere near comparable. In other words, Kovalev in a huge slump and in a crappy year contributed almost as much in the pts column as Ryder in another “great year” (and I agree, he was good before this year). So Ryder is no Kovalev.

The problem with Ryder is that he quit. Not carbo. Ryder had plenty of chances to work his way back into the lineup. At the start of the year, he was slumping and working hard. Then he quit. He doesn’t backcheck, forecheck, hit, dig, set-up plays or score goals. So he’s probably the worst defensive liability on the team, the weakest back-checker, and he doesn’t score. That’s my definition (and Carbo’s definition, presumably) of a brutal season.

So yeah, Ryder sucks. And Kovalev at his worst is better than 70% of the players in the NHL.

      groundworking:

Don’t get me wrong, Ryder CAN comeback with another team next year and regain his form. I hope he does. I should say he was brutal this year. He lost confidence and quit. Not Carbo’s fault. I mean, having watched an entire season, Ryder was the first this year to quit on the puck (give up on the back-check, change after 30 seconds on an odd-man rush, etc. etc.) Ryder is not a whipping boy, like Kovalev, because he isn’t, and never was, as central to the team. But the only injustice the Habs did to Ryder this year was not trading him.

Had they played the entire game the way they played the first period, Boston would be playing golf now. So as much as I think it is a mistake for Kiovu to play Saturday night I see where Carbo has no choice we need his leadership. Kovalev is not providing it and neither is Markov. The players out there that are providing the leadership are Hamrlik, Somlinski’s whole line, even Price to a certain extent. One of the blogs pointed out the skilled players that were not playing up to expectation, take a look at their nationality. That is why when it came to trade deadline I was looking for one second line canadian player and one defenseman a canadian that could provide the leadership needed. I have said it once and I will say it again, the Stanley cup does not mean the same thing to Euros as it does to Canadian/ North American players. That is why teams with these types of player show up come playoff time and teams with too many Euros struggle. Now I like the Euros and we need their skill but we need a Canadian player to step up and lead this team on the ice and in the dressing room.

When we get by Boston and I still believe we will, I also see us getting past Philly. They are exactly the same type of team as Boston, only I do not think they have as good of goaltending and their defense is slow. I believe if we come out of this series healthy then we can also take Philly. As far as Pittsburg is concerned, they will have their hands full with NYR and I give us a 50-50 chance of beating them because they play the same type of game that we play and as long as we are skating we can beat any team in this conference. But lets get past the Bruins first and lets get some leadership back on the ice.

Philly has alot more north american players than the habs, and they have a key ingredient”GRIT”, which habs don’t have, plus scoring from 3 lines, which habs don’t have. I truly believe they’re going to the finals, and could very well win the cup. habs aren’t winning anything this year with all their Euros.

Price made one mistake and I guess he knows it! He is still the best goalie of the playoff and he’ll show on game 6! Stay tuned for a great hockey night on saturday!!!

I hope that you didn’t take that last part seriously. That was meant as a joke, but it came across a bit more harshly than I intended it to.

      It’s just a game.

Creamed again by Underated Boston. I think the habs ran out of gas. The team has evaporated from the more agressive Boston. Montreal defense is to slow to get out of their zone and the forwards are getting caught on the slow lane and are not anticipating. Montreal defenses during the season is much better when they move the puck out of their zone quickly.

No powerplay goals in this game. Boston sees blood and are going for the Habs throat. This is a sickining feeling because of what the habs have accomplished. For some strange reason, montreal cannot make quality passess, the rookies are getting rid of the puck or just rushing their play. Boston forechecking and their game tactics are just taking montreal apart. Montreal cannot adjust. Most of monteal goals are out of luck. Game 7 is going to be a gut wrenching experience. IF montreal gets out in the first round perhaps they will have time to regroup but at the moment it looks bad. Maybe just maybe, with the season on the line, the montreal team will get that extra gas. But montreal really looks bad. This is not the same team. Kovalev seem slowed down and worn down, it looks like he has some hidden injury that we are not aware off. All commentaries and the player all agree they have to skate…but easily said..they seem slowed down as if these young rookies are just not ready for the long haul. Boston is out for vengeance and they seem to have legs at the moment. It can be all about timing, Montreal seem to have reached their cycle peak and now on the slide… they need to survive one more game if we are to see their climb back up. One more thing, Price is good but its going on seven games and the guy need to rest. Too bad Huet is not here on reserve. Perhaps also we maybe getting out coached. Not a single time out or tactics to slow or at least give the player time to regroup. Im certain these young players will be much better next year…so as consolation…we still have a good team that will be stronger after this.
