Habs / Flyers: Game 1

  • Written by Habs BlogHabs Blog 320 Comments320 Comments Comments
    Last Updated: April 24, 2008

If we learned anything from round 1 of the Playoffs, it’s that regular season records mean absolutely nothing.

The Canadiens once again play a team they dominated in the regular season. Undefeated, at home and on the road.

If we learned anything else, it’s expect the unexpected.

Who knows what Philly team will show up? Who knows if Montreal will play with the urgency and intensity that they need? Will they underestimate the Flyers the same way they did the Bruins?

Will the powerplay resume and be the decision maker in this series? Or continue to struggle and be indifferent?

Can Martin Biron be as good or better than Carey Price?

All these and many more questions need to be answered starting tonight in Montreal.

    A. Because they score between periods (but not today, I hope).

It’s not so much that they can’t find them as it is that they won’t go out and get them. Skilled players seem to dominate the Habs’ personality as a team, and while that worked against Boston, a more physical presence is required as a team proceeds deeper in to the playoffs.

It’s the Ottawa formula all over again.

And if they make a liar out of me by winning another Cup this season, then no one will be happier than me. And that’s my challenge to these players (not that they’ll ever know that it is).

It is harder to find these good players, over the last few years we lacked the skilled players to score goals, so finally we get the skill that we need and now we do not have the power forwards, I would suggest to you the Lats and Chipchura could both become what we are looking for, but so far they have not developed. I think Lats should have played two years in them minors where he would have learned to play more aggressive, now he is going into his third year and he still does not use his dominate size to his advantage. The other thing is that we have tended to draft 10th or higher for the past few years and it is hard to pick up the big centreman or the strong power forward drafting that high, therefore we end up drafting the smaller skilled players that are still available. Montreal has always been known for the speed flying frenchman and all, therefore, they want a player that can skate, it is the reason why we have dominated the Bruins for so many years. They always drafted touchness and speed was secondary. So I guess we have to ask, do we want a good team like Boston or do we want a great team. Now don’t get me wrong I agree we need a couple of big strong power forwards but they have to be able to skate.

I think they just came out a little cold. I will bet you by the end of the night this games is going to be close. They just have to get the cobwebs out. Its like a boxer who needs that first good shot. After that, he adjusts, and is good to go. This game will be tied by the end of the second period.

The Flyers are tired. And if it weren’t for a couple of goal posts saving Biron early on, they would have been down not 1-0 but 2-0.

So they get a lucky break off of Brisebois’s deflection and then they get inspired. Of course. That’s hockey. The sky is far from falling however.

How soon Brisebois’s first round performance is forgotten. Didn’t he hit the post behind Biron prior to that unfortunate deflection off of his stick? And what was he supposed to do with that exactly? Not try to stop the pass? Tackle Kapanen? It happens.

So essentially, the Habs were a couple of goal posts and a goal that came one second too late from running away with this one.

Senet 1, I agree with all of your points. And I’m not suggesting that strong skating power forwards are easy to find (available). I’m just saying that the focus, with regard to free agent signings and trades, seems to have been on smaller skilled players as of late. Briere?

As everyone here surely agrees, Lecavalier would be such a nice addition to this team. They’d be dominant.

I watched the Philly Washington series, and if Montreal loses this series, it will be because they beat themselves. Boston is a better team than Philadelphia.

Even so, one or two bad games in a playoff series and it will be hard to come back against any team.

Breezer looks tired, maybe smarting from some hits. He definitely needs to sit out at least the next one. We need O’Byrne to move the Flyers out of Carey’s face.
Habs look like they might be starting to thaw out but boy, did they look stiff in the first period, also unwilling to mix it up and fight for the puck.
    What gives???????/
We’d be up Salmonella Creek if it wasn’t for Price, but the way the Flyers are moving in on him, it’s just a matter of time until they mangle him.
Let’s hope our boys can find some testosterone in their jocks.

I was stoked to see the Habs bounce right back in the second, and I think that if they keeop the pedal to the metal in the third, then Philly will be there for the taking in this game. Philly looks like they’re fading.

Further, I agree with others that the Habs are playing an opponent that they should beat in this series.

yes, but our defence is horrible. They can’t seem tp make a pass out of their zone. what gives? You know guys, I thought Boston deserved to win the series, and if we play the same way against Philly, we’re most certainly going to lose the series. Philly is much better than Boston, more offence, and better goaltending. Philly has controlled the puck in our zone, and habs D is continually giving up the puck.

I’m watching the game on CBC because I don’t get RDS in HD. So here, for you Habs fans with RDS HD, are some great CBC quotes from the game:

    1. When Kovalev’s goal is under review and the CBC team is looking at a camera angle that shows it was not a high stick: “I’m going to say something I shouldn’t say here…but I don’t think he hit that with a high stick”.

    2. On the knee on Kovalev at the end of the game: “Richards is getting penalty for a clean hip check.”

    3. “Montreal started the game strong and then Philadelphia took over…”

    4. When Montreal scores to tie the game: “Scores!” [silence]

    A couple of observations:

    - Philly has reaped the rewards of several fortunate bounces in this game, at both ends of the ice.
    - The Habs have looked far too flat for a team supposedly poised to make a legitimate run.
    - The Habs need to skate.
    - The Habs need to shoot more whilst in the slot… rather than look to make that extra move all of the time.
    - The Habs’ only powerplay opportunity of the game came with one minute left, and that was enough to tie it.
    - It’s good to have Kovalev back in regular season form.
    - Biron is nothing - the Habs should be able to light him up in this series.
    - The brain surgeon that threw a beer at Richards deserves to have his teeth knocked down his throat. That’s uncalled for and gives Habs fans a bad name.

CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP!!!! First of all, a high stick slop goal on your russian toothless **** bag kovalev, second of all, richards got all shoulder on that “penalty”. The Canadiens didn’t even play well enough to win that game. Luck be a lady tonight, a hairy canadian lady. Kismet will rein supreme on your FlLUKE habs. Ease up, sit back and embrace the upset. FLYERS IN SIX!!!

well i was kinda worried in the beginining of the game, we had a hard time getting the puck out of our net, and we missed a lot of breakaways and stuff, but like always montreal always seems to fight or play harder when their losing so yeah we won YEAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!
By the way who was that guy that kostopoulos jumps on when he scores that looked really cute.

The cads were handed a game; giftwrapped by the NHL’s best; what better way to diminish the sport.

    Habsfansrsoft:

I seem to remember one of your porky compatriots getting his bald head smacked around by Tie Domi (a Canadian) after he tossed some booze at Domi.

That said, I’ve always found a contingent of Habs fans to be an embarrassment to our country, the city, and the team. Booing the national anthem is completely classless, and tossing beer on Richards is absolutely unacceptable, and the riots are shameful. That said, there’s nothing that compares in the NHL to the complete cheap shots that Flyers’ PLAYERS have committed in the NHL this year. You can’t hold the team responsible for the behavior of 1% of its fans, but you certainly can for the behavior of players that it keeps in its lineup.

My impression of the less objective Flyers fans: “Whah! Whah!! Whah!!! Refs are on Montreal’s side! Goal scored with a high stick!”

You guys are a piece of work.

News flash: The Flyers are a second rate team, and they’ll lose.

Joseph, I understand what you are saying about have Vinny or a guy like him the problem is you have to give something to get something and I doubt if Tampa would even part with him. I am hoping though that next year he is a UFA and we should put a big push to get him then.

And blaming the refs? That knee by Richards was probably the most blatant trip that I’ve seen in these playoffs. They’ve called that all year.
