The Canadiens are 6-1-1 after a narrow shoot out win in a game they probably should have lost.
The Canadiens are finally meeting some competitive teams and getting tested. They meet the Wild in Minnesota tonight. The Wild have an identical record and are known to be notoriously stingy at home.
Notably, the Wild’s Captain is Saku Koivu’s ‘little’ brother Mikko. Always fun to watch two brothers face off against each other.
The Wild of course are coached by and start several French Canadians which always adds some competitive fire to the mix when playing the Habs.

- fuzz16 : Hey all....Havent been on in a long long time.... Since we HAd kovy, koivu, tanguay combo... I must say gonna be sad to see gainey go... Did so much fir the Habs but he has made mad mistakes recently...The worst was Gomez... 8.5 million is such a waste of money... Even Gill at 2.25 million... Thats a lot of Mollah for those 2... Cammalari and Gionta were great signings and Plek is killing it ... Sorry for the long msg guys.... havent talked habs hockey in a while
- goalie : Please don't EVER mention the name GRUNDMAN. He was totally incapable!!! Nuff said. If the plan is not to have Gauthier long term how about Pierre McGuire. He cetainly knows his hockey and can analyse a team's (and player's) strengths and weaknesses.
- Senet1 : I hear about all the negatives but when people are down on you they never say anything about the positives. I think I would take him over Grundman anyday.
- Senet1 : I agree goalie, lets not shoot the guy before he does anything. After all he did do some good things in Quebec and Ottawa. He drafted Sundin, Joe Sakic, and Lindros and was involved in the Lindros trade to Philly. Basically what he did there Colorado has benefited for the last 15 years. He did deliver in Ottawa too having a good team and going to the playoffs all three years he was there. Only problem at the time his team could not beat the leafs. So I hear about all th negatives but not about
- goalie : What one can never forget is that the NHL is stressful, being the GM and or coach of the HABS is VERY STRESSFUL. There are tons of backseat drivers (like ourselves) analysing every micromove the team does and does not do. What was apparent was the STRESS shown on BG's face - of which much of it comes from being a Hab. Let's see what Gauthier does in the meantime.... we all know that he'll be gone if he does not produce. This change probably means both goalies stay until the end of this seaso
- Senet1 : But for now I say lets give him a chance and see what he does.
- Senet1 : Lets face it guys, some people learn from their mistakes and some don't. If he does not he is a lot easier to fire than BG who is and will alwasy be a Hab.
- Senet1 : Well one positive is that if he falls flat on his face then Rocky will get his wish and we will eventually get a good #1 draft choice.LOL.
- Senet1 : Ottawa was a good team while he was the GM???
- Senet1 : Ok save me the trouble,
- PACTUM SERVA : There is no posistive here
- PACTUM SERVA : Senet try and dig up some info on what gauthier did in ottawa and with the ducks....it speaks for itself
- Senet1 : About two months ago, I said Gainey would never be fired that if the team did not perform he would resign first. I believe Mats and I talked about that back in December. To me Gainey did all he could to remake this team unfortunately he failed, he could not get a big centre, but other than Lang who could have been our 30 goal man injuries injuries. Lets face it every player that he brought into this team in the last two years has had a serious injury that and has missed at least a month or more.
- Senet1 : So I guess I am missing something, why does everyone have their panties so tight on Gauthier as the GM. To me he deserves a chance. if he does a good job are we going to praise him or continue to question every decision he makes. One thing for sure you are not going hire a new GM this time of year. I say give him a chance.
- Mats Naslund : I would have preferred 'interim' next to GM.
- Mats Naslund : The one plus on the side of Gauthier is that he is very familiar with the team. A new GM might not have understood everything about the players, but he will. I'm still not sold though. His track record scares the heck out of me.
- Donnie : Thanks for making that point about the whole French thing islandhabfan. These are the truest words spoken on this site. Alot of people wont say it cuz they think it sound somewhat biggoted. But my friend, you are exactly right, until this whole speaking french bullsh*t thing goes out the window, this club is not gonna recover. Hiring someone anywhere else in the country because he speaks english would be racism, but it floats when its the opposite and done in Quebec. CUT THE BULLSH*T habs, and g
- goalie : I think Mats may be on the right path. EVERYONE has said for three years now that the habs need a bigger stronger center ice man. The fact is BG Did NOT get that player in three years. The team isn't that much better than last year (if at all) afte teh off-season moves. I think thta the Molson's may have quietly suggested he down. I would have if I were them.
- PACTUM SERVA : wake me up in another 6 years guys
- PACTUM SERVA : lol
- nilan : Jeeez, gauthier sounds like he's facing a firing squad. Already got the blindfold on...
- PACTUM SERVA : im changing my handle lol
- PACTUM SERVA : lol no not really nilan lol
- PACTUM SERVA : this team is so fuc ked
- nilan : Maybe "keeping the faith" is not what we are feeling right now, eh pac?
- nilan : That may very well happen.
- PACTUM SERVA : Gauthier will put his stamp on this team by trading away price lol
- nilan : Soooo....trade everyone for draft picks and bring up the entire Hamilton squad? Late 90's all over again.
- islandhabfan : He has the right last name. this team is not going anywhere as long as they only hire people that speaks french They have to find the best person no matter what language they speak...
- nilan : 2-3 year window. sorry.
- nilan : As of late? there was a 2-3 window of hope in a sea of bad choices.
- PACTUM SERVA : agreed
- Donnie : Maybe just another horrible move in what seems to be becoming a regular thing in Montreal as of late.
- PACTUM SERVA : but gauthier???????? ?????
- PACTUM SERVA : True

I had the privilege of watching this game, it is amazing the similarities of these two teams.
It starts with their names M’s.
Coaches all former Montreal Canadiens.
Captains both Koivu
Both have a number of French Canadian players.
I am sure we could find more but these are a few. Minnesota plays a little tighter game than we do but they can they have a good power play except we shut them down all night and that is why we won the game.
Something else I was impressed with, for those of you who have been on Latendresse’s case he played a very good game and seems to work weel with Koivu and Tanguay. He made some nice passes and through his weight around, not as much as I would like to see but quite a bit more than last year.

Anyone out there concerned about the shot blocking habits of the Montreal power play killing units? These guys are getting beaten up taking shots for the team. I worried about guys like Komisarek. It looks like he won’t make it through the season if he keeps it up.
