2008/2009 Eastern Conference Predictions

  • The 2008/09 NHL season is right around the corner. How do you see the Eastern Conference shaping up?

The difference a year makes…. This time last year the Canadiens were given slim chance at even making the playoffs, the idea of them winning the Conference was laughable.

There’s no reason to think the same surprises can’t and will not happen this year. There always are.

Which team will make the ‘hockey experts’ look as bad as the Canadiens did last year?

As for this Canadiens team, on paper they look to be the complete package. The ‘hockey experts’ new unanimous choice. It’s hard to argue that choice, but on paper has to translate to on the ice.

Is there any strong reason to think the Canadiens won’t win their Division and won’t compete for the Conference?

For Habs fans, the dream of a #1 finish for the Canadiens and a #15 finish for the Maple Leafs has never been as realistic as right now. And on that note….

In looking at the three eastern divisions, I think you pretty much have the Northeastern division the same way as I see it.
The Atlantic division is to me a hard call, if Pittsburg cannot recover from Gonchar’s injury then I think the division is again pretty much the way you have it. The southeast division I think is going to be the hardest one to call as it is every year. Tampa to me has improved the most from last year and since the other teams in that division were not that far ahead of them last year they have a good chance of finishing first. However, Washington is also going to be right in the mix and I think they have a better chance than Carolina. So here is how I see the top 8 teams in this conference.

Montreal- Has added the missing pieces to make a run for cup
Pittsburg- Will overcome injury,Allstars will be difference
Tampa Bay- Most improved team in the conference
Boston- should have better offence this year with Bergeron.
New Jersey- Alway tough but Brodeur is getting older???
Washington- Last years run should improve them performance
Philadelphia-If they stay close could be trouble in PO.
NY Rangers- Not sure about this pick any one of three or four teams could make this spot, Carolina to me has the best shot besides the Rangers.

This is how I see it anyway.

I think the Caps will win the SE div. if Theodore can play his best, big if. Tampa is pretty weak in nets and on d/

Habs first in the conference is nice to say but for some reason I like being the underdogs. We’ll see. Go Habs.

If Theodore in nets, Washington better pray. I see habs winning their division, and NJ winning their division and a tie between the caps and lightning. habs will win the eastern conference and Detroit will win the western conference.

I agree with Dancan81. I like being the underdogs. If we’re predicted to win the division or conference, we won’t. Too much pressure on the team… could cause us to miss the playoffs all together. But i’ve got faith.

Well lets face facts, we won the conference last year and we made some significant additions to our team this year. So as much as we may like to be considered the underdog we are not going to be an underdog, we are not going to surprise other teams this year because they know we have a good team. After all we are the MONTREAL CANADIENS, we very seldon are an underdog in any rink especially the original six teams. So we have to consider that we are one of the favourites to win our division and conference.

By the way I do not disagree with your top 8 teams in the conference. The order is a crap shoot and the bottom two positions are also up for grabs but if all holds true and it never does your top eight are basically the same as mine.

Why is Crap shoot *************’s out?

Seems we are not getting much interest in this topic so maybe we should have a new blog with something else to talk about?

  10. The Habs are cool , personally I rather sit at Local 33 with a pint of yingling and chill with the Rangers

  11. I rather have us 2nd instead of 1st because we won’t be under as much pressure as last year. Top 5 and I’ll be happy

    My Eastern Conference predictions
    1. Mtl
    2. Phi [of course Gagne is one hit away from finishing 6 or 9]
    3. Pit [Fleury looks real]
    4. Wash [Theo must be back, or 6-9]
    5. NYR [seems very under-rated, I thought they'd win the cup last year]
    6. Buff [young, talented, too young for fear, Ruff and Rivet +++]
    7. Ott [if D can keep up in new NHL]
    8. NJD [ will be in every game]
Car, Bos and TB miss out by one or two points. Overall 4th to 11th could be within 3 – 5 points
NYI, ATL, TOR [if the coaches can keep them working, they will keep some games close, as a group they could be 10-15 points out of 11th

Are we doing the west? :-)

Pressure is what makes a team play better, if they choke then they should be there anyway. Sometimes being after to lose is the best pressure you can have, that is what made all the other great Canadien teams great, and that is why they always keep talking about the ghosts of the Forume. Just when it looked like they were beat something strange happened and they would score a goal. So I disagree, if we are a great team we have to prove it finishing first is the start.

I think that both Boston and TampaBay have improved and I believe that they will surprise many like Montreal did last year.
