Alex Kovalev not on waivers.
-
Bob Gainey has something cooking, apparently Alex Kovalev and $4.5M of his salary was just put on waivers.
Or maybe not.
This turns out not to be true, a mistake printed by the Associated Press blown out of proportion. Got to love the Internet and rumors at trade deadline time….it won’t be the last one.
Clearing $4.5 Million of salary sure got some people excited.

- goalie : I can't type.... what a faux pas on my behalf...
- goalie : I just realized what I said adn didn't say yesterday. What a fayx as on my behalf. Regarding coaching Randy Cunnyworth MUSDT stay as an assistant- he deserves at least that after the tremendous job he did in the latter part of this past season. I'd still mlike to have Robinson, Carbo adn Allard on the staff also.
- Avatar37 : I agree Senet, my choice if we can't have Cunneyworth would be Crawford, Robinson on defense, Cunneyworth for offense, and Carbo as offense/faceoffs .
- Senet1 : I think if I had my choice it would be Crawford and see if he could get Carbo and Robinson as assistants. That would be my idea coaching team.
- goalie : I witnesed Marc Crawford MANY times when the Avs, etc. played against Oilers and let me tell you - he is constantly on the referees asses virtually game after game. He is the complete OPPOSITE of J. Martin. Crawford is calm on TSN but he is one excited coach behind the bench. A friend of mine who was an NHL linesman for 26 years said they dreaded Crawford he was so tough on the officials!
- goalie : You know, I've bee thinking about the coaching situation. I'd be really excited if the Habs had Hartley as head coach and Carbo adn Robinson as his assistants. I also read it somewhere about a month ago that Toronto's goalie coach Allard (?) wants to relocate back to Montreal where he has his goaltending school/business. Add him to the mix and I'd say the Habs would be in great shape coaching wise.
- Avatar37 : Well, from what I recall, Hartley didn't do all that well with the Thrashers. But, I don't know enough about him to judge one way or the other. Crawford I do know, and he always seemed to be a good, level headed coach to me.
- Senet1 : even Pacioretty two years ago did not impress any of us. Younger players have to play and make mistakes and learn from those mistakes. If they sit in the press box they are learning nothing.
- Senet1 : Of course if he have some good assistants like a Larry Robinson to teach the young defence and someone like Carbo to teach faceoffs etc. then your coach does not have to be as good at teaching. If Hartley fits the bill you get no argument from me. My only previous point is that if he is impatient with your younger players to the point that he does not play them, then we are right back where we were with Martin. Martin was a good coach too, but how he handled Emelin, PK and even Pacioretty two
- goalie : I would like to see the Habs sign a coach who realizes that our team isn't tough enough (we need to get bigger and somewhat more nastier),the coach needs t be a great TEACHER and be a coach who can get the players to understand and buy into his system. Other than that I couldn't care what lingo he speaks. I wnat to see our team become a ligitimate contender fast!
- HabsLoseAgain : Well we dont know if he is or is not a teaching coach. I woukd just hate to paint Hartley something that he is not. There will always be questions but if Hartley was hired as the habs new bench boss i for one would not be overly upset.
- Senet1 : My thoughts are not that he is or is not a good coach but rather that when he won the cup he had an experience team of superstars on that team. Where as we have a group of young inexperienced players, is he a teaching coach or a tactical coach or both? I am not question whether he is a good coach, but my question therefore is he the coach for us at this point in the deveopment of our team?? Not sure we are all purely speculating at the moment?
- Senet1 : Something happened to my first post. I will try again.
- Senet1 : That is why I said I am not sure he is the coach for us at this time? Right now we are all speculating including yourself, because non of us know for sure?
- HabsLoseAgain : Crawford also won a cup with Patrick Roy so would you say he is a good coach or did he just have great players and one of the best goaltenders of alltime?
- HabsLoseAgain : Senrt so please give me some reasons why you think Hartley is not the coach the habs need right now. What is it that you do not like about him or his coaching style?
- HabsLoseAgain : Well all great coaches had great players playing for them so i guess you you add a a pile of other coaches to that list including Bowan......
- Senet1 : Hartley, was he a good coach or did he just have great players and one of the best altime goaltenders of all time. I am not sure that he is the type of coach that this organization needs right now. Unless of course we sign a ton of free agents.
- Avatar37 : However, my feelings may completely be wrong, Hartley may turn out to be a good fit.
- Avatar37 : I didn't say Hartley was unknown, I said we demoted a good coach in Cunneyworth and now have an unknown quantity because we don't have a coach. I don't have that great a feeling about Hartley, I'd be much more comfortable with Crawford.
- HabsLoseAgain : In my opinion i think he might be a good fit in montreal. Oh and he also likes to have a tough team.
- HabsLoseAgain : Also this year he coached the ZSC Lions to the swiss championship title.
- HabsLoseAgain : lol the so called "unknown" won a cup in 2000-2001 with the colarado avalanch.
- HabsLoseAgain : lol Bob Hartley is not an unknown lol.....sheesh.
- Senet1 : I think he has until the trading deadline to show us that he deserves to be on this team. If he does not get back on track then he could be simply a 2nd round draft pick to whoever we can trade him to.
- Avatar37 : Bourque reminds me of Pouliot, size, skill, and invisible. He needs to get back to playing a physical game and bang people around and maybe he'll start getting some of those garbage goals again. Need to get to the front of the net. I hope he can find his game again.
- Avatar37 : We had a good coach in Randy Cunneyworth. Now we have an unknown, with Bob Hartley rumoured to be the front runner. I'd rather have Cunneyworth.
- goalie : A player like Rene Bourwue has al the physical attributes of what would be a beter than average player. Hwever, he certainly didn't play that well especially after being in Montreal about three weeks. We NEED players like Rene to play hard AND produce points on a REGULAR BASIS in order for us to be competitive.
- Senet1 : MONTREAL – Rene Bourque had a rocky start to his career as a Hab, but he’s planning on using the next four years to make up for it. After arriving in Montreal under less-than-ideal circumstances in January, Bourque spent the following 38 games hoping to find the spark he needed to rekindle his offensive production. Despite flanking Tomas Plekanec on the team’s second line to close out the season, the 30-year-old sniper suddenly found himself firing blanks in his new NHL home.
- Senet1 : I think we have to be patient and not expect too much too soon. Let's get a strong management team in place, make a good choices in the draft get a good coach and then see what we need at the free agent market. I will not be too disapointed if we miss the playoffs again next year if it means a long term team success. We have the opportunity to make some major strides over the next two years at the draft table. Then we fill in the holes.
- goalie : I certainly agree that we need to get some impact forwards who will sign for 5 years, not for a season then walk away. That's not going to help us.
- goalie : I wouldn't trade PK for Ovetchkin no matter what. He is a coach's NIGHTMARE and a poor team player.
- Senet1 : I believe he will as we graducally put better players around him and build this team.
- Senet1 : Goalie I agree with Avatar. PK is the present and future of this teams defence. I would not even take Staal from Pittsburg unless I had him tied up in a long term contract of a Minimum of 5 years. Also once has to consider the salary difference. Pk is on the move up probably 3M plus for his next contract and then eventually 4-5M if he keeps on improving. He has moved his game up two gears since he came into the league 2 years ago. He now has to move to the next level and I believe he will as w
- Avatar37 : pressure playing in Montreal, since he has problems with the expectations in Washington and Montreal isn't any easier. Then again, the media were very easy on Kovalev, so maybe it's a Russian thing? No idea. Anyway, yeah, it would have to be an established star that gives us an immediate drastic upgrade at forward, that's the only way I'd trade PK, because we'd be giving up a potential QB on our blueline for the next decade.

YOU SAID IT ALL
February 26, 2007 at 10:34 pm
Nobody’s getting traded… okay, maybe David Aebischer, I hope. Best game they’ve played since October when they dominated the Hurricanes in Carolina 4-0.
Where are all the Kovalev haters?
February 26, 2007 at 10:41 pm
PULL ABBY!!!!!!!!!
PUT HALAK!!!!!!
February 26, 2007 at 10:41 pm
Time to put in HALAK !!! C A R B O!!!!
February 26, 2007 at 10:41 pm
See? Aebischer sucks. Hopefully brings in a goalie tomorrow to help Halak til Huet comes back.
February 26, 2007 at 10:43 pm
Sorry, hopefully GAINEY brings in a goalie tomorrow…
February 26, 2007 at 10:46 pm
Hey, home from work… man games come on early here. At least this habs game is actually on TV. What the hell is Aebischer doing in net?
still… Montreal scores 5 goals? holy ****!
February 26, 2007 at 10:47 pm
We have no goaltending!!! Bring up DANIS!!!
GET BOUCHER. HE WAS PUT ON WAIVERS!!!
Aebischer makes me so nervous! He can’t stop the puck!
February 26, 2007 at 10:48 pm
Makes me laugh all the 27 haters Alex is a great player so what he is not haveing a great year it happens , he still is a monster in the playoffs and you want him with you not against you .
February 26, 2007 at 10:49 pm
Aebischer= Swiss Cheese !!!
February 26, 2007 at 10:50 pm
Sorry but Perezhogin’s useless.
February 26, 2007 at 10:54 pm
Aebischer’s hurt!!!! YEAH!!!!!!! Oh, wait, damn, he’s okay…
February 26, 2007 at 11:01 pm
Anyone watching TSN? The announcers are being pretty harsh to poor Aebischer.
February 26, 2007 at 11:02 pm
Hope Bonks not hurt to bad, this is when Kovalev has to realy step up!
February 26, 2007 at 11:10 pm
THAT WAS CLOSE.
February 26, 2007 at 11:12 pm
Like that Frank ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha…………..
February 26, 2007 at 11:13 pm
That was close. dodged a bullet with that Garth Murray non-call. Sundin looked PISSED.
February 26, 2007 at 11:13 pm
The Maple Sucks are lucky Aebischer let them back in the game, the rest of the Habs were great (except for that floater Perezhogin)…
Aebischer and Perezhogin to Chicago for Nikolai HABibulin and Martin Havlat… yeah, I wish.
February 26, 2007 at 11:20 pm
Crazy how the habs suck a keeping a lead tho… So glad Murray didn’t get that penalty or this could of went bad!
I hate to think we have to waist some of our trading possibilities to get a goalie…
February 26, 2007 at 11:22 pm
After the habs barely beat the leafs, I have come to 1 conclusion.
There is no way we’re making the playoffs with this team! NO FUC@#$KEN WAY!
WE HAVE NO GOALTENDING! A junior B goalie is better than Aebischer!
2 of the leaf goals should NEVER EVER have gone in. What the hell is Carbo doing? He van never put Aebischer back in. Put him on waivers.
The habs as usual stopped playing in the 3rd period. We have 2 more games with the leafs and I guarantee they will beat us in both those games!
Gainey needs to be a seller. Trade Souray, for the future of this team!
We really do have the WORST GOALTENDING IN THE LEAGUE!
there is no way with these goalies we will win. And BTW, look at the habs schedule: We play only 1 team below 500. The rest are playoff contenders.
Guys, we didn’t dominate them. We should have won this game big time, but we didn’t. We held our breath until the last second, against the leafs?
What does that tell you? It tells me, that against much better teams, we will fall flat on our buts! I’m ready to wave the white flag, and so should GAINEY!
Trade, while we can get good value for Souray. Remember, it’s for the future of this club, because this team is going NOWHERE!
February 26, 2007 at 11:25 pm
Souray is mother fu***. This mother fu*** made the entire team lose their confidence which seemed indestructible. Man, this guy has all the skills to make the team lose its confidence. what was he thinking when he jumped ike jaki chan????? Was he shooting a movie or was he paid to do so?? Bob Gainey should inspect his case ’cause I strongly believe was paid a dinner to play like ****. Watch out, he might be on the headlines tomorrow.
Beside his case, Habs played an awsomes game. They might have played some disgusting hockey, but thqat ws mainly becaus eof their por goaltending.
Remember when souray was questionned at the begginning of the year why the team was doing so good, he said it was because of their strong goaltending (by Huet). How in the name of GOD do you guys want the team to play well when the goaltender is shooting a movie scene???????????
We had such a good game. Damn. Does he hate us that much????? Please bring in Halak and never ever play Aebisher. Just leave him as a backup in order to make Halak play better.
I’m only 17 but he is the WORST goalie I’ve seen in the Habs’ uniform.
February 26, 2007 at 11:25 pm
Now the Leaf Nation pussycats are going to cry like they do about ’93 and Kerry Fraser… Geez, they bug me. They think their team is so good (for the 40th year in a row) and that they deserve the Cup without even earning it because they KNOW NOTHING ABOUT HOCKEY. With their little aluminum foil homemade Stanley Cups running up and down Yonge Street throwing up their Pizza Pizza slices cuz they can’t handle their beer.
It’s beyond me how a team that has done nothing but FAIL for 40 straight years (not even a losing appearance in the Final since then either) can garner and maintain such a fervent following… oh, yeah, I remember, it’s cuz their fans are STUPID!

I don’t want to see David Aebischer in a Habs uniform this season.
I don’t care if a rookie has to play the entire season. He looked like a 3rd string.
Go out a get Belfour or Cujo tomorrow they’ll come cheap.
AEBI-******* MUST GO!
February 26, 2007 at 11:27 pm
I meant Aebisher NOT SOURAY
February 26, 2007 at 11:28 pm
What is Jack Tornton talking about? Souray made us lose confidence??? Filming a movie??? Huh???
February 26, 2007 at 11:29 pm
They played some disgusting hockey in the 3rd period that’s it and it was mainly because of aebi-*******
February 26, 2007 at 11:31 pm
Souray going no ware , get used to it ,we won the game and were tired in the third trying to play BIG ! Consider some players played hurt and sick ,we beat the Laff’s lol. Feel proud of your team ,we got 2 points….go habs…and get L A R A Q U E S !!!!
February 26, 2007 at 11:37 pm
THE GAME SHOULD HAVE FINIST 5-2 FOR THE HABS
EVERY ONE SHOWED UP EVEN IF THRY WERE SICK.
GO HABS GO
February 26, 2007 at 11:38 pm
So, is Danis injured? I think so, otherwise he would be here. You know, I think Theo is better than Aebischer. Maybe we did lose that trade with the Av’s. And he didn’t even try to stp those shots. he stood still like a moron!
they were soft shots from the blueline! He has ZERO cofidence. Oh my god! WHY DIDN’T CARBO CHANGE GOALIES AFTER LEAFS MADE IT 5-3 ? Maybe Carbo has a death wish, or just wants us to lose. I know 1 thing. If he puts him back in the nets, it’s an automatic win for the opposition, and might as well forfeit the game.
February 26, 2007 at 11:39 pm
Here’s the latest I HOPE THIS IS NOT TRUE:
Souray to Anaheim “Growing Possibility Tonight”
That according to a few sources. One Duck’s source said the rumored deal is Souray for Ryan Shannon, Kent Huskins, Fourth Round pick. Also heard was that Bryzgalov could be involved in the deal. The first round pick that came from Tampa tonight is “a necessity.”
February 26, 2007 at 11:43 pm
that’s an old rumour, i’d think they can get alot more for souray..
Why do we always let our openants of the hook, we need that killer instinct when we have team down. Abby was awful, every shot taken on him scared me, i bet it scared his teamates also. I like the hitting by us tonight, i can’t count how many big hits our guys through.
Can u guys play a full 60 minute game already.
February 26, 2007 at 11:48 pm
Souray’s NOT getting traded, forget all the ‘sources’ and the ‘rumours’ and EKLUND!
David Aebischer IS terrible. Always sliding around on his knees. High shots and he’s on his knees… with his eyes closed, I bet. The soft goals he lets in are killers, man, he looks like Theodore did last season (remember Jose getting pulled in what, 5 -6 games in a row?)…
Please, Bob, get Cujo or Belfour or Lalime or someone tomorrow, they can be got for picks and Perezhogin, of course.
February 26, 2007 at 11:55 pm
NO WAY!!!
We ain’t losing our picks or youngsters for a damn goalie. What’s wrong with you guys?!? Am I the only one that remembers that we have Halak, Danis, Price and Huet that will be ready for playoffs?!?
If Gainey and Carbo really think Abby is not worth second goalie, they are gonna bring up one of our other goalies. Use your heads guys. Your thinking like the laffs do: which is you ain’t thinking.
We got all of the prospects, souray (although i say we keep him) and draft picks to get a 2nd center. Not to lose all that work to start back at zero with another goalie…!
February 26, 2007 at 11:56 pm
Do we really think Lalime is better than Aebishit?
But Chicago did put Boucher on waivers today. Go get him, we’re desperate for a goalie! Yeah, the game shouldn’t have been any closer than 5-3.
Will the habs ever play 60 minutes? I doubt it. That, and their very difficult schedule the rest of the way, will in fact prevent us from making the playoffs. Unlike some of you, I would prefer to see Souray getting dealt. People who don’t agree, must be satisfied with this team finishing in 8th place, and never getting any better. Not to be redundent, but Souray will NOT resign with the habs, and we WILL lose him for nothing!
February 26, 2007 at 11:59 pm
BTW, Danis is injured, Price won’t be ready for 2 years, Huet is out for the rest of the season, and Halak is a rookie without alot of experience.
February 27, 2007 at 12:00 am
R Habs 4 Real:
Do you really think that Gainey hasn’t spoken with Souray to see what he wants? If BG trades him tomorrow, its because he knows Souray ain’t signing back with the habs no matter what. If he stays, then either he is really confident about the team making a good playoff run (and you never know what happens in the playoffs, think of the oilers for proof)or that Souray has hinted that with the amount of money he deserves, he will stay in Montreal.
February 27, 2007 at 12:03 am
R habs 4 real ,what are you ? The Amazing Kreskin, give it up with the Souray **** ,its getting boring Dude !!!
February 27, 2007 at 12:03 am
Price could be just fine as a second goalie until Huet is back. And Abby hadn’t played for a while so maybe, just maybe, he can still be a good second goalie.
Halak will be fine for the rest of the season as second goalie.
Trading to get a goalie right now would turn into having a useless guy as soon as
Huet is alright.
February 27, 2007 at 12:10 am
Carbo is a complete MORON. He should be traded. With coaching like that the Habs will not make the playoffs. Why in the blue hell would he not put in Halak. Instead he puts in a bigger MORON than himself. The Habs should have won 5 – 0 tonite. That shithead Abby would not stop a beach ball. They guys finnaly score a bunch of goals and that idiot Abby can stop a bag of grass. If that Jackass – Carbo continues to go with **** for brains – Abby they will not go anywhere. That game pissed me off so much.
February 27, 2007 at 12:12 am
I personally think you’re all brain dead! Even on “after the horn”, (leafs channel), they were laughing at Aebishit. I agree with their statement” there is NO WAY habs will make the playoffs, especially with this horrible goaltending. Look at the replay of the last leaf goalie. Aebishit actually jumped out of the way to avoid the shot.
It irks me that you guys are actually satisfied with this team. I guess you never want to win the cup again!
February 27, 2007 at 12:18 am
And Habz4ever: Price won’t be in a habs uniform for at least 2 years.
I hate repeating myself, but HUET IS OUT FOR THE SEASON! So, who do we have? A rookie with no experience. that’s it! And you belive that will be good enough to make it into the playoffs? Please guys, get the rose colored glasses off!
I want to see this team get better, not mired in 8th place every year. Oh well, some people just prefer the bottom of the barrel! Not Me!
February 27, 2007 at 12:19 am
Rhabs4real ,who’s going to replace Souray man ? I tell U who, KNOW BODY then you’ll ***** there’s no leader ,point shot or fighter and so on …. get on the forreal bus. Why do U think all the other teams want him??????? H E L L O !!!!
February 27, 2007 at 12:25 am
Isn’t it funny, Koivu and Kovalev have us all trained. Just when we had their number, basically that is they are just wimpy european players, they put in one or two good games and basically spend the rest of the season in the penalty box at the wrong times. We used to sing SHANANANA, but thanks to Koivu and Kovalev, we never know if this duo will pull prima donna penalties and lose us the game.
It used to be fun to get ahead and actually know the lead was gonna stay.
I say trade Alex and Abby for a decent goalie and a first round pick. If only to get back the old SHANANANA song. Kovalev is just to volatile and unreliable.
February 27, 2007 at 12:34 am
Any body see are resident Laff’s fan, Frank the freek geek? He always go missing when his joke for a team “the Maplenothings” loose, come on Frank ,don’t worry bout that big L on your forehead, put in your 2 cents.HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA
February 27, 2007 at 12:38 am
Souray is having a career year, but I’ll guarantee he won’t come close to a season like this, EVER AGAIN. He is a defensive liability, and defence comes first. How come he couldn’t score last year? He’s having the same type of year McCabe had last year. And look at McCabe’s record this year. only 12 goals.
Yes, he has a great shot, but Souray’s numbers have dwindled the past 20 games.
He’s not worth more than 5 million. He can score, but he can’t stop the opposition from scoring. He’s not the only D man who can score! get over it.If he was such a great leader, how come this team doesn’t play for 60 minutes? or show up every game? It will be a different scenario next year. Once players get a huge salary increase, they stop playing. He won’t be the same next year, and we shouldn’t mortgage this team for 1 player!
February 27, 2007 at 12:43 am
Then why does all the other teams want him ? Or why is he an allstar? or who’s the Habs goal leader …and so on and so on and so on and why do you skirt the question dude?
February 27, 2007 at 12:46 am
Come on boys we have nothing to brag about. We just won by the skin of our teeth. Actually I am embarrased we blew such a good lead. They need to get rid of Carbo and Abby. A total waste of money, those two. If they put Abby in het again I hope they loose. Anybody is better than Abby. Carbo could not coach a dog fight. He got lucky the first half of the season. They should string both of them up by the balls those useless twits.
February 27, 2007 at 12:46 am
Hey Kovalev, get this, 10 percent of the total team salary.
The habs pay their players a total of $43,761,100
Kovalev gets over ten percent of that, out of 28 players, the only other person to get more than Kovalev is Sakku Koivu.
The real heroes on the team, Pleks, Higgins, Halak, Begin, all make under a million dollars. The millionaires who have brought us a slump that extended from new years until just recently, and some five place standings, all make over two million dollars each.
Kovalev only has 38 points, or not even more goals than Souray. We pay Alex to score, and he’s only got 13 goals in what 56 games? That’s almost 125 thousand for every point. Compare that to Pleks who gets the same number of goals, Pleks makes not even half a million. That works out to about 12 thousand dollars per point. What a big phoquen difference, the guy who has almost single handedly pushed, cajoled and helped to bring the team out of a slump, makes less.
And then you wonder why are we peeved off at Alex?
