Alex Kovalev not on waivers.
-
Bob Gainey has something cooking, apparently Alex Kovalev and $4.5M of his salary was just put on waivers.
Or maybe not.
This turns out not to be true, a mistake printed by the Associated Press blown out of proportion. Got to love the Internet and rumors at trade deadline time….it won’t be the last one.
Clearing $4.5 Million of salary sure got some people excited.

- Senet1 : seriously ready to challenge for the cup. He will us win games but he will not be the difference between winning the cup and not winning the cup. You pick up players like that once you have the team ready to challenge,.
- Senet1 : I am looking at the players to draft and there are a lot of big 6'3-6'5 forwards available ion the draft this year. If we could draft 3-4 big young players in the 2nd and 3rd round why would you want to give that up for a roster player who may have 2-3 years at best. If we are going to build a winner to have to build it with bigger players and there are a lot of good big players available this year. So you sign Ott and he is with us for the short run, but probably not when we are seriously re
- Senet1 : Boullion is a great mentor for the young D-men
- muller93 : Boullion is one of MBs great additions--Boull ion is a definite Keeper.
- muller93 : Getting rid of Kaberle frees up a lot of cash. Boullion is small but is reliable and doesn't back down from anyone.
- muller93 : Exactly Goalie any thoughts on a punishing D-man?
- goalie : They;re showing determination adn skill vs Ducks and Blackhawks.
- goalie : REd Wings could turn out to be the surprise team of this year's playoffs!
- goalie : WE need to rid our team of Kaberle and Webber. Step two would be to then move Diaz. If we get that big d-man I believe that would push Boullion to # 7 on the chart. We'd then go with Georges, PK,Markov (to continue mentoring Ememlin) Tinordi as our starting six . THEN I'd be excited about our chances. We could then work on getting bigger forwards.
- goalie : I too would gladly give up a 3rd round pick for Ott- the type of player we sadly lack. AND if we could get one more rugged, expeienced defenceman it would help immensely.
- muller93 : Senet what you are saying makes sense but if we can get Ott for a 3rd round I'll take that all day.
- muller93 : MB should be looking at a big D-man first, even though I like our blue line with the addition of Tinordi. We need that insurance just in case one gets injured. Also I'm a firm believer in starting with the goalie first then-defense-for wards-and we already have good goalie. We have all noticed when we have the lead Price is tough to beat.
- Senet1 : So sometimes you have to sacrifice for one year or two to build that team in the draft. then add the finishing touches through FA and trades.
- Senet1 : Muller, Detroit is another good example. They have been in the hunt every year with good well balanced teams yet only one or two cups to show for it. However, they have built a team that has a chance every years for the last 10+ years. That is what I think we have a chance to do this year with a good draft. It reminds me of the habs teams of the mid 80 and 90's we built a team then with sold draft picks and won the cup twice during that time period. So sometimes you have to sacrifice a one
- muller93 : Very true Senet, you do need luck and we haven't had any luck it seems since the habs moved to the Bell Center. We had an incredible run in 2010 with some crazy goal tending from Halak. With Galchenyuk-Tinor di-Gallagher all in 1 year--not too bad, even with an early exit in the playoffs.
- Senet1 : Muller I guess we all have our own ideas, but there has never been too many times that were successful when they traded their draft picks away. We have a chance to build this team so we have a shot at winning the cup over the next 10 years. Even as good as Pittsburgh has been they have only won the cup once since Crosby and Malkin have been with the team. That is because you not only need great players but you need luck to win, but one thing about Pittsburgh they have a chance every year. The
- muller93 : Good point on Torres, he might be a liability. Torres has to tone it down a bit, but that's his game-very aggressive.
- goalie : Though I don't condone what Raffi Torres did - thos shows you how repeat offenders or near offenders are going to be treated. His hit was NOT illegal BUT what the rap sheet adn reputation Torres has he got severly punished. Lesson to be learned by OTHER players because Torres dopesn't learn fromk his mistakes.
- muller93 : Senet normally I would agree with you on not trading draft picks but we are not in a rebuilding stage. Sometimes draft picks can be a roll of the dice and it can take up to 3 years to be NHL ready. We have a good team and I agree with Stuo players like Clowe-Torres-Ott -Scott will make a big difference. Somebody has to protect Gallagher, he can't keep getting hit the way does--we need a tough forward so they think twice before going after Gallagher.
- Senet1 : Really a heathly Habs team would probably win more games against the Pens that we did against the Sens. Reason they Pens would not play as physical against us as against the Sens. If we get good goaltending we win at least two games.
- zpezada4ok : hello all «link»
- stuo11 : hes a tougher big guy too! Just a minor adjustment but will help a bit
- stuo11 : hes better than markov, and hes french who was in mention for defenceman of the year
- goalie : Markov for Beauchemin - an injury prone d-man for an ;old timer'd-man. Beauchemin is NOT what the Habs need in my opinion. He is a HUGE defensive liability.
- goalie : Stuo 11 I'd make that trade with Oilers fast BUT I doubt the Oilers will make that. Two marginal d-men at the best for a switch of first round picks - not a chance .
- stuo11 : markov for beachemin?
- stuo11 : let moen go
- stuo11 : maybe try and get steve begin back
- stuo11 : we wouldve kicked out all other teams but pens, sens,
- stuo11 : pens have alot of forwaRDS same with us but we have better goaltending
- stuo11 : theres styles of play goalie. Sens played us good, but lost games to southeast teams florida and tampa and get crushed by leafs EVERYTIME. sens and leafsd cant beat bruins but we do frequently
- stuo11 : Diaz weber and our 1st for their first edm
- goalie : SEns beat us 4 games to 1. Pens had last night's game under their control. What does that mean if we were up vs the Pens in a series. I think the Habs have a way to go before we're competing for Lord Stanley's Cup!
- Senet1 : If he could score goals like Lucic and we could sign him to a four year contract then I would consider it too. However, NOT if we only have him for one to two years.
- Senet1 : So we went from 27th pick to 21st pick.

Xhabsfan is right! That Souray’s shot is unstopable and my team would kill to have a leader like that,he da man !!! GO HAB’S GO !!!
February 27, 2007 at 1:15 am
Xhabsfan: here’s my answer. It’s fine to have Souray on your team, if you already have a great defence. WE DON’T! If he’s traded to a team like Anaheim, they already have a great D, so they want him for their PP. We aren’t in the same position as them. If he craps out for another team next year, they have OTHER GOOD D MEN, and lots of other talent. We don’t. We need to rebuild, because right now, we have NO GOALTENDING, NO D, NO OFFENCE, and we CAN’T XCORE 5 on 5, even with Souray. And if we trade him for a good defenceman who could, in time, become a great D man, and also get a quality scorer, and 2, #1
draft picks, wouldn’t you do that deal? almost anyone would. And what happens if we sign him for alot of $$, and he gets injured? What do we have to show for 6 million? NOTHING! Let’s face it, with or without him, we’re not going anywhere this year, so trade for the future of this franchise. I’m sure, 2 years from now, you would like to have a team with talent like Ottawa, right?
Think with your head, not your heart. We’ve been down this road for the past 15 years. It’s time for a change. And hey, you never know what will happen. If we trade him as a rental, he still might resign with us in the offseason.
Anyways, that’s the way I feel about.
February 27, 2007 at 1:22 am
It’s a business risk you have to take and at the same time you need a leader for the new guys, a great leader .and since when is it you can’t compete every year and build,no sorry ,you are wrong ,.live with it and move on ,bro Hab fan
February 27, 2007 at 1:28 am
Hey R habs, the problem is not Souray. The problem is number 11, number 17, or hey just pick any hab who makes over two million dollars, they are the problem. At least Souray plays for his keep. Our forwards and defensive specialist, even those two deadbeats, Boully and Dandy, are all underplaying, they are not producing. Granted Markov is about our only shining star in defense, but hey the rookies outshine him, so while Markov may be underated, he is far from being star material.
Why shoot yourself in the foot, why pay for a 20 goal scorer for seven million or even five million when you already have one for under 2 million? That is Souray. No, no, nah, in Gainey’s book, Souray is worth more than what we pay him.
Getting rid of Dandy, Boully, Koivu and Kovalev, Johnson and Ninnima, Abby, Begin, that would free up over half of the total payroll, or some 25 million dollars, target those players who have cost you games and money.
Just imagine what we could get for 25 million dollars?
Instead of waiting until the summer, when players are not available, generally and all you get are those troublesome players no one wants, use the trade deadline to get what you need. We have had enough of Gainey’s and Carbo’s Lotto 6/49 approach to gambling on broken down injured has beens, our Dr. Frankenstein has had limited success recouping injured vets, we have only Koivu who came back from the death bed literally.
But big difference he was not dying or having body parts falling off like the bunch we have.

xhabsfan: everyone is entitled to their opinion, so you can’t just say you’re right and I’m wrong. You think your way, thinking only about the present, and I would rather think about the future, and stability of this team.
Also, I didn’t say we couldn’t make the playoffs while rebuilding.
But realistically, do you honestly believe, that our goaltending will get us into the playoffs? Have you seen the schedule the habs have the rest of the season? It’s brutal! I was watching the local sports(MTL), and even they were saying that with the goalies we have now, it’s just not happening.
If Gainey get’s a bonafide goalie, maybe we squeeze into the playoffs, but eliminated in the 1st round. Don’t you want more than that?
Hey, maybe we can try for Aucoin. He’s got a great shot too.
Anyways, we all want what’s best for this team, and we want to be in a better position next year, right? So, there’s point in arguing, because we simply disagree. I’m still a habs fan, and always will be, but I want this team to be in the upper echilons of hockey greatness again.
February 27, 2007 at 1:33 am
hey, it smells like **** on this blog, oh wait, that’s just all the aebisher haters, come on guys we won the game. it wasn’t pretty and i’ll be the first to admit that it looked like aebisher had a few too many cocktails between the second and the third, but we won. if you ask me i think carbo had to play one of the two tonight. save halak for the rangers maybe. it dosen’t make much sense but maybe that’s what guy was thinking. regardless we won. so let’s all be happy and look forward to tomorrow’s game. keep climbing the ladder boys. go habs go
February 27, 2007 at 1:43 am
NAME A BETTER D MAN THAN SOURAY ?And Aucoin would work so replace him with Dandy or Boullion, cause not only am I rite ,but guess what , SOURAY ‘S STAYING ! SO MOVE ON MY FRIEND ,IT’S A NON NEGOSANABLE ISSUE, DONE DEAL AND THANK THE HOCKEY GODS…..
February 27, 2007 at 1:51 am
so Xhabsfan: Are you God? If not, don’t make stupid statements like that. And what makes you think you are smarter than anyone else? You can’t even spell!
Get off your high horse. There’s no such thing as right or wrong! It’s called a difference of opinion. Understand?
And if we keep him, and are in 10th place next year, out of the playoffs, I’ll be saying: I TOLD YOU SO!
I’m signing off now, so you can talk to yourself.
I’m not going to waste any more time on your nonsense.
February 27, 2007 at 2:10 am
Rhabs4real doesn’t like to be wrong eh, you think he’d be happy we beat the Laff’s’ ! The God remark was funny to me through cause I’m a atheist with Buddhist tendency’s and I GOTS NO HORSE. And as for my spelling ,well again ,Souray’s staying and so is Markov ! not bad eh! lol
February 27, 2007 at 2:28 am
WOW!!! you guys should just drop the gloves already!!!

WOW!!! you guys should just drop the gloves already!!!! see what religion comes out on top!!!!
February 27, 2007 at 2:46 am
I’d be happy of Gainey unloads any of the dead wood on the team…
as for Souray i’m not sure what’s going to happen, if he gets traded it will definately mean he intends to test free agency or Gainey isn’t willing to pay how much he is asking for.
I think we may make a surprising move right out of left field.
February 27, 2007 at 3:01 am
did i really say that three times?
February 27, 2007 at 5:36 am
So Souray got his 22nd goal, on the powerplay of course. What’s the value of a 25-30 goal defenceman at the trade deadline? Oh yeah, a lot. The only way Souray doesn’t finish the season in a Habs jersey is if Gainey gets offerred something ridiculous he can’t turn down. Considering Rivet went for a 1st round pick and a 4th-6th d-man 10 yrs younger, other GMs will HAVE to overpay to acquire Souray’s services and they know it. If Gainey could trade Kovalev to say … Pittsburgh for say … Malone or Armstrong, I’d be pretty happy … it would pave the way for big signings and/or big trades in the offseason.

WOOOOOOOOOOOO
Great game.
Suindin really shoed his class when he gangtackled Markov after the game. What a team player. THat disgusts me. Habs WIn LEafs Lose. Habs make playoffs. Souray wins COnn SMythe with Habs.

WOOOOOOOOOOOO
Great game.

I am a die hard Habs fan for life. But what if it were Koivu that was high sticked last night and Montreal lost like that there would be some bitterness today right. I call a spade a spade. It should have been a penalty. I would be like that as well and you would have too. You guys have absolutly nothing to brag out today.
I hate the leafs but I have to give credit where credit is due and the leafs battled back and gave the Habs a run for the money. The leafs are not out yet. They have to play Montreal again yet. Be careful about what you say boys it just might come back a bit you in the ***.
February 27, 2007 at 9:16 am
11 points for koivu in the last 5 games.
Kovalev was incredible.
Abby …..um…had a tough night.
Bonk….is a force.
Komisarek hit a few guys so hard their ears are still ringing.
Begin? = guts…..could hardly skate, but he knew how big a game this was….man…broken foot after all….guts?….I’ll say. Craig Rivet said that Begin was different from anyone he has ever met from the shoulders up…..
Souray is staying……and dont think BG doesnt know what his intentions are.He will sign.
Cujo says he will waive his no trade clause this morning to go to Toronto or Montreal….just the fact that he thinks he can mention those two in the same sentence makes me say…dont take him.
Samsonov for Aucoin?…..nope.
Higgy played with the flu…..not a euro.
as I look out the window, my neighbors dog is ripping open my garbage bags I put at the curb…..sigh…
I’m off today ….how good is that?,,trade center all day baby!….
oh, and good morning Frank……life goes on….the leafs dont.
February 27, 2007 at 9:30 am
lol@frank
February 27, 2007 at 9:31 am
CUJO…..I’d love to see him in Montreal. We need a good goalie. He still has it. He just needs the right team. Give them Huet and Abby. Huet is another Theodore. “A ONE NET WONDER” They shawn for a brief moment and the light went out.
February 27, 2007 at 9:45 am
BOy is Frank a poor loser. Put him in the same class as SUndin and McCabe. Frank edited my last post to make me sound like I had respect for the laffs. HA
For McCabe to grab Markov after the final whistle is pathetic. What a joke. POOR LOSER. You think he would be alittle happier after rodding the Laffs mgt of all that money. And SUndin, what is wrong with him. I thought he was going to bite bill Maccreary with this baked bean teeth. Leafs suck.
ALso out west teh leafs are just one big joke. IN calgary if you mention the leafs you will get slapped. IN Vancouver they piss on leafs fans. IN Winnipeg ther are no leafs fans and in Regina, well who cares.
February 27, 2007 at 9:56 am
38 Dalley1 ……Overpaid sissies Euros kicked *** last night. Confidence and motivation are the keys to our success. When we have faith in our scoring and goalies, we win games. The team has no faith in Abby, nor does he in himself. I have never seen a goalie week on their glove side???
February 27, 2007 at 9:57 am
Hey Higgy Dude. Take it easy Show some class. Frank is not the only poor loser on this site. If ya know what I mean.
Now I’m not defending Frank. Just show some class Brother we are all hockey fans ok.
Just remember Montreal is only a few points above Toronto. Montreal has to face Toronto in Toronto in April. Don’t bark to loud Dog. Pay back can be a *****. And that goes for all of the Habs fans in here. Including myself
February 27, 2007 at 10:02 am
coutNY_HabsFan:
They were ok last night. I give credit where credit is due. But to be out for a sore elbow, when we have a player playing with a broken foot. I feel that my comments were justified. You say “Confidence and motivation are the keys to our success”. Yes I agree, But when your goalie can’t stop a beach ball, that confidence will qiuckly fade…………..
February 27, 2007 at 10:36 am
I taped the game last night, I watched that high stick by murray, over and over and over again, guess what people, it was a friggen dive, murrays stick didnt even come close to scamdins mouth. Im sick and tired of watching this overpaid swedish meatball whining, as if he should not be allowed to be touched on the ice while the f#$%ken ***** crosschecks guys from behind. He’s a low life coward who should go back to sweden and rot the rest of his remaining teeth with a lifetime supply of riccola throat lozenges. Seriously, hab bros, if you get a chance to see the phantom high stick, look carefully while they are close to the boards, their sticks tangle, and scammedin suddenly tilts back his head as if he just lost his eyeball, while his head is tilting back, murray’s stick is nowhere near his face. Nice try scammer, typical swedish move, why was there no penalty? Because there was NO high stick. Toronto media were complaining, what bothers me more is the irresponsible reporting that goes on. They have far better equipment than I have, why not look at it further and report the truth? Because it gives Toronto an excuse to soften the blow of the loss. You know, Montreal got away with that one there or else Toronto would have been on the power play and the game could have been different. Its exactly what was reported on Tsn.The T.O media was also complaining on how the referees bad call on torontos goal against Islanders, something should be done about the refs, stating it was one of the worst calls they had ever seen. Big deal, if they want the worst, how about a high stick that caused an eyeball hanging out of its socket, with blood gushing out, and koivu struggling to find his way in panic, millions of people saw it except the friggen 4 refs, and what was the call? NOTHING. It cost the Canadiens the series. THAT was the worst I have ever seen. What did the refs think happened? But if there’s something I hate worse, its a 6 million dollar diving swedish meatball like scammer sundin.
February 27, 2007 at 10:53 am
You tell em Lor……..
February 27, 2007 at 11:22 am
I don’t hate David Aebischer but he’s not a good goaltender and the Leafs didn’t battle back, Abby let them back in the game. The Habs outhit, outscored, outgrinded, outfaceoffed, outplayed Toronto.
February 27, 2007 at 11:27 am
And another thing, the Leafs play like spoiled little babies, they can dish it out but sure can’t take it. Those baby-brains deserve everything they get – NOTHING.
Sundin is so overrated and yeah, I didn’t see a high stick either. And for whoever said if it was Koivu we’d be pissed well, it was Koivu in the playoffs last season against Carolina, he nearly lost his eye and even though there was blood and an obvious eye injury, there was no call against Justin Williams.
Just an aside here, Glenn Healy is a moron. TSN and their pro-Toronto **** is so bush, thank God for Pierre Maguire there.
February 27, 2007 at 11:41 am
Abby did make a couple of good saves toward the end, but 2-3 goals unimpeded and untipped that any goalie at this level should stop. He looks lost and does move well laterally. He seems to be tougher on the blockerside, which is weird because most goalies are glove side strong. He’s small and plays even smaller in a squat style stance. The game should have not been this close! Carbo should stick with Jaro because even in his loss players felt confident in his abilities…
February 27, 2007 at 11:42 am
let’s just pray that Gainey get’s us a goalie today, or else you can just forget it for this year. Besides, it’s not fair to a rookie with no experience, to carry the entire weight of this team on his shoulders. Gainey will probably go after CuJo or Boucher or Esche. And if we can swing a deal for a scorer, that would be great. Perehzogin and Dandenault need to go!
February 27, 2007 at 11:42 am
And for whoever said “if it was Koivu we’d be pissed well” I said that yes. And alot of Habs Fans did not like that call. Yes and I for one was pissed as hell at that call as well. But **** happens and calls are not made. It won’t be the last one either. And if that was a hight stick (but everyone says it was no hight stick) then the Habs got away with one. Sundin is a wimp yes. But so is Kovalev. He ranks in the top 10 for sure………….
February 27, 2007 at 11:43 am
The Montreal Canadiens have recalled Andrei Kostitsyn…
February 27, 2007 at 11:46 am
“Besides, it’s not fair to a rookie with no experience, to carry the entire weight of this team on his shoulders”
Well it is fair. Dryden & Roy rose to occasion and done an oustanding job when called upon……………
February 27, 2007 at 11:54 am
Why do Leaf fans bother coming on to this blog? Envy?
February 27, 2007 at 11:58 am
yes, but Halak is no Roy or Dryden. We are going to pick up a goalie; you can count on it!
February 27, 2007 at 12:07 pm
Martin Biron traded.
February 27, 2007 at 12:15 pm
Good Point. BUT Halak is our only option right now…………
February 27, 2007 at 5:06 pm
you mean to tell me that Gainey couldnt package up say sammy or perez and milroy plus TWO first round picks of a weak draft for Ryan?
please tell me its because he knows that Ryan will re sign with the oil next year…
please?
and now?….what do we do?….do we send Halak back and ride leighton and Abby into the playoffs?…if you believe that you’re nuts.
bottom line is the islanders with this addition will make the show, and either the habs or leafs are out…..smythe is THAT good.
March 2, 2007 at 10:25 pm
r we goin to beat the sabres???
March 2, 2007 at 10:28 pm
good luck habs……
go habs go!
