- Senet1 : Also the addition of Blunden and even Leblanc is not shy to throwing body checks. Also PK has been more aggressive lately
- Senet1 : That is partly because of the change in coaching styles and the addition of Bourque.
- Senet1 : If we kept Plekanec and Bourgue then we need a shooter on that line. So to me from a forward standpoint we need to add a goal scorer, but one who goes to the net and is not knocked around. To me based on our offence this year that is the most needed position to fill on our forward lines. When you consider that we got ride of Cammy, and if we trade Gionta and Gomez disappears we are no longer a small team. The team has more grit now than at the first of the year.
- Senet1 : So we have to add some muscle as well as skill to our second & third lines and upgrade our fourth line as well. I could see Leblanc moving in as the centre on the second line if we got something good Plekanecs, otherwise, he could play the wing on either the second or third line. Blunden seemed to score faily well in the AHL not sure if he has it in him but would like to seem him on a line with Eller and maybe Leblanc next year all three players like to use their bodies and therefore should be
- Senet1 : Not counting Markov if he plays. If we trade or let go of our UFA defenceman then we will need at least three D-men, I would like a good look at Nash to see if he can play at this level. If not he is gone, I do not think any of our other defensive prospects are ready quite yet. Our junior and college players should be coming on stream for Hamilton next year so we will get to see how much they have developed and whether any are ready for the big time.
- Senet1 : While I agree we have quite a few players that could be made available, I do not see a need to make wholesale changes only the necessary one. obviously Gomez, Gionta, AK46(if he will not sign) I keep our top line of Cole, Pacman and David. I keep Eller and Leblanc, Blunden, Bourque, probably Plecanec unless we can really improve on his positin. I keep PK, Emelin, Gorges, Diaz and Naturally Price. Probably Budaj. That basically gives us two functional line and two sets of defence, not counting
- goalie : Great to see Pacs gets su=ome success after the devestating dirty check last season that could have paralyzed him for life.
- goalie : Given ho the team has played this season one thing in our favor is that we pretty much need to clean house. Other than about 6-7 guys everyone else would be available in my mind.
- goalie : After how the tes]am has
- Avatar37 : Apparently only one offer for Carter on the low side so far, I think Montreal would be foolish not to investigate the possibility of a trade for him, and if there is low interest, the deal might be able to include moving Gomez. Gomez/Darche/Cam poli and a third round pick? Maybe not, but I'd be in serious talks with Columbus right about now.
- Avatar37 : «link»
- Avatar37 : for him had we held on to him until now and created a bidding war. There are more buyers than sellers currently on the market and it would have been the perfect time to have traded him.
- Avatar37 : Goalie - I'm not sure how we could have obtained more for Halak. We showcased him, everyone knew he was available for trade, and in the end, we took the best offer. Any asset is only worth what a purchaser will pay for it. The Halak trade wasn't like the Cammalleri trade where you had GMs afterwards saying they didn't even know he was on the market. The Halak trade was done properly, the Cammelleri trade was a knee-jerk panic move, and while my opinion is that we could have received more
- Avatar37 : I saw the game, the Islanders first goal came from a shot that was clearly above the height of the crossbar. How is it possible for a play to go to review where they have the advantage of mulitple camera angles and the ability to pause and they STILL get the call wrong?
- goalie : I agree don't get dilusional over our three game winning streak. Changes MUST be made. I am however, glad to see the effort being put forth by the players.
- Mats Naslund : I just went to capgeek to see who the Avalanche might be dealing for a rental - and I see they have only 6 players signed for next season!!! There are a couple young D men on that squad who are RFAs who would do very nicely next season.
- Mats Naslund : One thing I know - the 3 game winning streak had better not get PG thinking about holding onto guys for a PO run. Trade them, build the value and move on to next year.
- Mats Naslund : How about Max Pac though.. 21 goals and on pace for 65 points this year. That is absolutely monster for a guy at his age/experience and especially coming after a horrific injury. Huge cornerstone moving forward. On pace for 33 goals.. could he get 35?
- Mats Naslund : Didn't get to see it either - and while I don't really care about the win, I am very glad that Gomez scored so we don't have to endure all of the negativity in the media about him for the rest of the year. He still su@ks, but at least it won't be a topic every shift he takes.
- goalie : Didn't get to see the game at all but it's great to see Pacs get a hat trick and fpor Cole to be + 3. When was the last time this team won three games in a row? Great victory -looks like they're giving 100% effort!
- Senet1 : 4-2 win habs
- Senet1 : Gomez scores, Yea!!!
- goalie : As I said yesterday it will be interesting to see what our lame ass GM gets for players he ships out. Bourque is good and he'll help us but I still think we could have gotten more for him and for Halak when he was traded.
- Avatar37 : round those picks occur (probably 3rd).
- Avatar37 : An interesting article. If we slip to the 5th or 7th draft pick, a very interesting case could be made for drafting Galchenyuk. If we wind up with the second or third pick, I'm not sure who I'd draft, because clearly Yakupov is going to be drafted first overall. Our second round pick also becomes interesting, I know I'd take Vasilevski if he were still available. It will also be interesting to see if we can turn some of our veteran players (Moen, Gill, Campoli) into draft picks, and what
- Avatar37 : «link»
- Avatar37 : That is why PG should have waited on trading Cammalleri. Right now, there is a high demand for a top 6 forward, we could have gotten much more than Bourque in return. That isn't a knock against Bourque, but a knock against a knee-jerk reaction trade that didn't maximize our return on a top asset.
- Avatar37 : «link»
- Avatar37 : chips fall where they may. After all, the only difference between finishing 17th and 29th is how good a pick you get in the draft.
- Avatar37 : We currently sit in 26th place in the league. We are 15 points ahead of Columbus, it's safe to bet at this point they will place last. We are, however, only 4 points ahead of Edmonton so it's still wide open as to who is going to finish second last. I still think that it's time to sit the veterans, play the youth, let them get experience, and regroup for next year. I'm not suggesting deliberately tanking like the Penguins, but give all our young players lots of playing time and let the c
- Avatar37 : goalie - If it were not for the play of Cammalleri, we would never have made it out of round 1. Cammalleri played as big a part, if not bigger, than Halak did. Sure, Halak played well, but remember the team collapsed in front of him, making his job much easier. We had lots of blocked shots and the ones that got through were typically from the outside.
- Senet1 : Goalie you are absolutely right, of course the one thing we had the two previous years that won the games that we are losing this year was our power play. If you look at say 10 games that we should have won had we had a similar power play, again we would not be having these conversations. When your PP goes from first to last in the league that is a lot of goals. How many games have we lost this year by one goal. Again poor management who did not prepare for Markov's possible absence.
- goalie : I'll put it another way.... we need more players who are willing to get their noses dirty.
- goalie : Two years ago when our goaltending stole series adn our players suddenly scored the coaches / GM believed that that was our true team . Well time has proven that was not. Though I was very glad to see the Habs knock off some very good teams we were very fortunate. And fortunate that spring was spelled HALAK!
- goalie : The wrst mistake management could possibly make I believe is to say, we played well some games and we believe the team can play to that level more often in the future. This team CANNOT adnb DOES NOT play to a high enough level. Please do not kid yourself mamngement. hat is partially why we're in the lace we are.

we will just have to see if Gainey makes us contenders or AGAIN, pretenders.
A repeat of off season non activity by Gainey will be doom and gllom for the habs.
June 30, 2008 at 11:10 pm
I think that Sundin will be a hab if Montreal still has cap space when he finally makes up his mind what he wants to do. Montreal is his best destination. I think it’s a great fit for him on this team.
Unfortunately, Gainey can’t wait on him.
If, however, Gainey can’t sign a big name such as Hossa he may stay with what he has or add a few character and less expensive players. With this method he’ll replace players that won’t be back like Brisebois, Smolinski, etc. and still have room for Sundin when he (Sundin) finally wakes up and makes a decision.
If there’s no Hossa or Sundin tomorrow, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a player like a Cory Stillman, or even Shanahan. Recchi wouldn’t even surprise me.
June 30, 2008 at 11:24 pm
Recchi is done like toast, and Shanahan couldn’t keep up with his linemates, and too old. Tucker would be cheap, or Bertuzzi? Anyways it would have to be a 2nd or 3rd tier player, you know, someone crappy.
June 30, 2008 at 11:25 pm
I also have to wonder if Montreal will be going into next season with Halak as the backup. Might be better if they could deal him and bring in a fairly cheap backup like Denis, Conklin, or Kolzig.
June 30, 2008 at 11:28 pm
I agree that Recchi and Shanahan are older and slower. But players who are strong in the dressing room are needed on this young team. These guys can still put up some points. Either one could do more than Smolinski.
June 30, 2008 at 11:37 pm
Montreal shuld just get Tucker. He’s been here before and Hossa wouldn’t help us at all. Bertuzzi hasn’t done much and he’s like 4 Mill. I would actually like to see Denis in Montreal. If Price goes down I rather have a guy with lots of heart(Denis being a hab fan) to back up Price just in case something happened. I love Halak but he needs more ice time.(AHL) Sundin probably won’t make up his mind until August! Get some french or Canadian guys, If ur going to get more russians get Zhitnik or Federov lol. but guys I would just eep it simple. Hossa probably wants a whopping 8 Mill for 7 years! Sundin would be fine though because he’s only a 1 year kind of guy. but hey guys, Shneider will be traded, maybe to Montreal where he won the cup? Trade Francis Boullion and a prospect/pick for him.
June 30, 2008 at 11:49 pm
Gainey will wait for Sundin — as well he should. Sundin is the best available this off-season. I don’t think Hossa is the player for Montreal, especially if he wants a long-term contract. My top 3 choices for power forward, in order, are Fedorov, Bertuzzi, and Shanahan. If we can’t get any of those 3, I would get Laracque, and put him on a line with Grabovski, who would then have more room to operate. I would like to see Grabovski get a legitimate chance to play in Montreal.
June 30, 2008 at 11:56 pm
roberts here for 1 year and 1mill seemed good to me but now he in TB too:D
June 30, 2008 at 11:59 pm
I rather see Chipchura play instead of Grabovski because Chipchura is more rough and has alot more heart. Lapierre actually has some offensive touch. and guys, don’t forget about Gregory Stewart!!! lol I agree with Laraque. If things aren’t going great just trade for some one big at the T, don’t get a crapp Hossa like player now! Sundin would get us all set and ready to go though lol Shanahan would come here for 1.5 Mill but I like my idea of having 1 guy form the 93 team Matheu Snhieder
July 1, 2008 at 12:22 am
Denis and Shanahan would be great! And I agree, Chipchura should play the whole year. He’s going to be a great player.
July 1, 2008 at 2:16 am
Well, if you guys think Chipchura can be that good, we don’t need another forward. Just sign Mats, and we’re ready to party. That would give us 4 very solid forward lines as follows:
1st Line: Sundin between the 2 Kostitysn boys;
2nd Line: Koivu between Tanguay and Kovalev;
3rd Line: Plekanec between Higgins and Latendresse;
4th Line: Lapierre between Chipchura and Kotsopolous/Begin/or Stewart
This would even allow us to trade one of our forwards, and re-sign both Gorges and Streit. Streit coming back will help with the development of Yannik Weber, who is also from Switzerland and a huge fan of Streit’s.
July 1, 2008 at 8:49 am
Hossa is not coming. He’s going to Boston for $100 mil for 10 years. Unbelievable! but they way he produces every year, could give the bruins many years of great scoring. Gainey would never have the balls to give out that kind of money. That’s why habs will never win a cup with Gainey as GM.
July 1, 2008 at 9:40 am
guys come on Bob Gainey is a great GM. We came 1st place last year guys, but we were just too inexpierienced but now nothing can take the habns down. If we took away Tanguay I stil though we could win the cup. But we should get 1 guy from the 93 cup winning team. Snheider would be easy to get trade Francis Boullion and something else lol. I don’t think gainey is getting Sundin, Gainey is too smart and won’t take a risk. He’s going to have an offer for anyone, and if no one takes it, Mats is coming to town.lol but I’m really excited for this and theres so many guys could help s out. even Hossa, Hossa might be a *****, but just like the pens, It would just be way too much and no one would be able to handle us. lol
July 1, 2008 at 9:54 am
I doubt very much that Montreal is interested in Streit. Just like Souray he is overrated based on a few stats. The facts are that he got so may points for a defenceman simply because he was playing forward.
His points are impressive whatever he played, but he proved soft at times at forward and is ineffective at the front of the net when playing defence.
Everyone thought Montreal would be terrible without Souray and look what happened. Streit to me is not as important as many people think and would be better replaced with a Jason Smith or Mike Commodore. That type of a defenceman would be a better help to Price as well.
July 1, 2008 at 9:54 am
Habs need to forget about Sundin and pursue some other fine talent (ie. Brian Rolston now that he’s told TB to shove it). Sundin will just keep them on a string until all the other talent is already signed elsewhere. Forget him and move on while you still can get someone else.
July 1, 2008 at 10:19 am
Is it possible that a team that has Marcel Hossa would have a better chance of landing Marian?
July 1, 2008 at 10:31 am
I agree 86&93. Rolston would be much cheaper than Hossa, provides more two way play and grit and would leave salary for Sundin down the road if needed.
I also think Montreal will be needing cap room for a backup goalie. I still think Denis or Kolzig.
July 1, 2008 at 10:36 am
lol yeah guys, I just noticed that Rolston is going on to the UFA lol (kinda late) ummm I think Rolston would get us the cup. put him on the 1st line 3rd line would be the belarus line!:)
July 1, 2008 at 10:49 am
Habs need Sundin or Rolston, but NOT Hossa, who has NO leadership impact.
Rolston was rated the most under estimated UFA by Bob M from TSN.
July 1, 2008 at 11:46 am
Awefully quiet day altogether…anyone hearing anything? Anything at all?
July 1, 2008 at 12:15 pm
well Montreal hasn’t done anything but Edmonton got Gilbert Brule and Erik Cole
July 1, 2008 at 12:22 pm
Nothing ? OMG NOTHING !!!
We dont need to panic we have a good team and we are all ready better with Alex in and Michael out, lets see where we are at the end of the day.
July 1, 2008 at 12:23 pm
Gainey needs to push and be super aggressive to try and land Rolston. A power center like that, cheaper than Sundin is exactly what the habs need. Promise him a 3 year deal, but GET IT DONE BOB!!!!
July 1, 2008 at 12:27 pm
I say we can look at alot of players and end up a better team for it,but we are not alone in the league and all the other teams are making offers as well, its not as easy as sitting here saying we should do this and that.I trust Bob will do what he can to better this team.
July 1, 2008 at 12:40 pm
I think we’ll end up with nobody, same as last year, and the year before, and the year before…. and so on and so forth. Some things never change.
July 1, 2008 at 12:53 pm
Montreal will get some one. The last couple of year Montreal sucked *** and no one wanted to go on a canadiens losing team. But now Montreal wants the cup more than any team and I bet if we gave Rolston 5.5 or 6 Mill he would come.
July 1, 2008 at 12:55 pm
Anyone know if Gainey has any interest in Laracque. He would give them some needed toughness, and with a guy like Rolston, a down low presence they lacked against Philly.
July 1, 2008 at 12:57 pm
TB just signed Vrbata. TB will win the cup this year because they’re aggressive, unlike Gainey!
July 1, 2008 at 1:37 pm
hab faithful, why so negative? And why so anti-Gainey?? If you think paying Hossa $100 million — that’s ONE HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS!!! — is the way to a Stanley Cup, you are sadly mistaken.
July 1, 2008 at 1:40 pm
oh Hab Faithful you are so silly, with no goaltending or defense I`m pretty sure they will win the cup.
is it really important that we pick someone up to you(I don`t think so) we did pretty well last year with no impact player wouldn`t you agree, first in our divison 2nd round in the playoffs for a team that was suppose to finish 14th…..it`s Canada Day go outside and enjoy the day
July 1, 2008 at 1:49 pm
Hab Faithful doesn’t sound very “faithful” to me!!!
July 1, 2008 at 1:59 pm
I love the habs but don’t like our GM. He’s all talk and never signs any UFA’s. He’s way too passive. I’m not saying we’ll have a bad team. They’be be good, but not great, and not cup contenders. I just don’t see him getting the job done. Just my opinion. If you think he’s signed alot of significant UFA’s, more power to you.
July 1, 2008 at 2:07 pm
And if you think Tampa’s winning the cup this year you’re just crazy!
July 1, 2008 at 2:22 pm
change your name to hab unfaithful, I think Tampa Bay has a blog why don`t you get on that one, and I see you didn`t take my advice by enjoying Canada day…
I think our GM is very good, for what he did in the past 5 years by rebuiding this team and the loss of his daughter what more do you want from him…all the UFA this year are worth nothing to me.
So hab faithful don`t be to upset today when no one is signed on and we get 1st overall in our divison and we take a shot at the cup…
July 1, 2008 at 3:19 pm

Remember Gary Bettman saying on Draft night that if teams talk to any impending free agents, they will be charged with “tampering?” Well, it seems to me that ALL the teams were tampering — how else do you explain the fact that there were so many free agent signings on the VERY FIRST DAY??? It takes DAYS to iron out a contract, not minutes. This is proof positive that these teams were talking to the UFA’s even prior to July 1.
