Andrei Markov signs 4 year $23 Million Deal
-
Andrei Markov has signed a 4 year contract that will pay him $23 Million.
First thoughts…..Big Bucks.
Markov has grown into an elite player in the NHL and without doubt the Canadiens best defenseman. Elite defenseman have big price tags. Getting Markov inked was the most important priority the Habs faced this off-season.
Imagine a Habs defense without Markov and it’s not a pretty thought…
Is $23 Million too much for Guy Carbonneau’s “General”? Time will tell.
The next logical thought is that there is little or no money available to sign Sheldon Souray. Bob Gainey may already know that Sheldon Souray is a goner. He’s long been rumored to be on the way out and if it wasn’t already decided, the $23 million dollars less to spend might seal it.

- goalie : I can't type.... what a faux pas on my behalf...
- goalie : I just realized what I said adn didn't say yesterday. What a fayx as on my behalf. Regarding coaching Randy Cunnyworth MUSDT stay as an assistant- he deserves at least that after the tremendous job he did in the latter part of this past season. I'd still mlike to have Robinson, Carbo adn Allard on the staff also.
- Avatar37 : I agree Senet, my choice if we can't have Cunneyworth would be Crawford, Robinson on defense, Cunneyworth for offense, and Carbo as offense/faceoffs .
- Senet1 : I think if I had my choice it would be Crawford and see if he could get Carbo and Robinson as assistants. That would be my idea coaching team.
- goalie : I witnesed Marc Crawford MANY times when the Avs, etc. played against Oilers and let me tell you - he is constantly on the referees asses virtually game after game. He is the complete OPPOSITE of J. Martin. Crawford is calm on TSN but he is one excited coach behind the bench. A friend of mine who was an NHL linesman for 26 years said they dreaded Crawford he was so tough on the officials!
- goalie : You know, I've bee thinking about the coaching situation. I'd be really excited if the Habs had Hartley as head coach and Carbo adn Robinson as his assistants. I also read it somewhere about a month ago that Toronto's goalie coach Allard (?) wants to relocate back to Montreal where he has his goaltending school/business. Add him to the mix and I'd say the Habs would be in great shape coaching wise.
- Avatar37 : Well, from what I recall, Hartley didn't do all that well with the Thrashers. But, I don't know enough about him to judge one way or the other. Crawford I do know, and he always seemed to be a good, level headed coach to me.
- Senet1 : even Pacioretty two years ago did not impress any of us. Younger players have to play and make mistakes and learn from those mistakes. If they sit in the press box they are learning nothing.
- Senet1 : Of course if he have some good assistants like a Larry Robinson to teach the young defence and someone like Carbo to teach faceoffs etc. then your coach does not have to be as good at teaching. If Hartley fits the bill you get no argument from me. My only previous point is that if he is impatient with your younger players to the point that he does not play them, then we are right back where we were with Martin. Martin was a good coach too, but how he handled Emelin, PK and even Pacioretty two
- goalie : I would like to see the Habs sign a coach who realizes that our team isn't tough enough (we need to get bigger and somewhat more nastier),the coach needs t be a great TEACHER and be a coach who can get the players to understand and buy into his system. Other than that I couldn't care what lingo he speaks. I wnat to see our team become a ligitimate contender fast!
- HabsLoseAgain : Well we dont know if he is or is not a teaching coach. I woukd just hate to paint Hartley something that he is not. There will always be questions but if Hartley was hired as the habs new bench boss i for one would not be overly upset.
- Senet1 : My thoughts are not that he is or is not a good coach but rather that when he won the cup he had an experience team of superstars on that team. Where as we have a group of young inexperienced players, is he a teaching coach or a tactical coach or both? I am not question whether he is a good coach, but my question therefore is he the coach for us at this point in the deveopment of our team?? Not sure we are all purely speculating at the moment?
- Senet1 : Something happened to my first post. I will try again.
- Senet1 : That is why I said I am not sure he is the coach for us at this time? Right now we are all speculating including yourself, because non of us know for sure?
- HabsLoseAgain : Crawford also won a cup with Patrick Roy so would you say he is a good coach or did he just have great players and one of the best goaltenders of alltime?
- HabsLoseAgain : Senrt so please give me some reasons why you think Hartley is not the coach the habs need right now. What is it that you do not like about him or his coaching style?
- HabsLoseAgain : Well all great coaches had great players playing for them so i guess you you add a a pile of other coaches to that list including Bowan......
- Senet1 : Hartley, was he a good coach or did he just have great players and one of the best altime goaltenders of all time. I am not sure that he is the type of coach that this organization needs right now. Unless of course we sign a ton of free agents.
- Avatar37 : However, my feelings may completely be wrong, Hartley may turn out to be a good fit.
- Avatar37 : I didn't say Hartley was unknown, I said we demoted a good coach in Cunneyworth and now have an unknown quantity because we don't have a coach. I don't have that great a feeling about Hartley, I'd be much more comfortable with Crawford.
- HabsLoseAgain : In my opinion i think he might be a good fit in montreal. Oh and he also likes to have a tough team.
- HabsLoseAgain : Also this year he coached the ZSC Lions to the swiss championship title.
- HabsLoseAgain : lol the so called "unknown" won a cup in 2000-2001 with the colarado avalanch.
- HabsLoseAgain : lol Bob Hartley is not an unknown lol.....sheesh.
- Senet1 : I think he has until the trading deadline to show us that he deserves to be on this team. If he does not get back on track then he could be simply a 2nd round draft pick to whoever we can trade him to.
- Avatar37 : Bourque reminds me of Pouliot, size, skill, and invisible. He needs to get back to playing a physical game and bang people around and maybe he'll start getting some of those garbage goals again. Need to get to the front of the net. I hope he can find his game again.
- Avatar37 : We had a good coach in Randy Cunneyworth. Now we have an unknown, with Bob Hartley rumoured to be the front runner. I'd rather have Cunneyworth.
- goalie : A player like Rene Bourwue has al the physical attributes of what would be a beter than average player. Hwever, he certainly didn't play that well especially after being in Montreal about three weeks. We NEED players like Rene to play hard AND produce points on a REGULAR BASIS in order for us to be competitive.
- Senet1 : MONTREAL – Rene Bourque had a rocky start to his career as a Hab, but he’s planning on using the next four years to make up for it. After arriving in Montreal under less-than-ideal circumstances in January, Bourque spent the following 38 games hoping to find the spark he needed to rekindle his offensive production. Despite flanking Tomas Plekanec on the team’s second line to close out the season, the 30-year-old sniper suddenly found himself firing blanks in his new NHL home.
- Senet1 : I think we have to be patient and not expect too much too soon. Let's get a strong management team in place, make a good choices in the draft get a good coach and then see what we need at the free agent market. I will not be too disapointed if we miss the playoffs again next year if it means a long term team success. We have the opportunity to make some major strides over the next two years at the draft table. Then we fill in the holes.
- goalie : I certainly agree that we need to get some impact forwards who will sign for 5 years, not for a season then walk away. That's not going to help us.
- goalie : I wouldn't trade PK for Ovetchkin no matter what. He is a coach's NIGHTMARE and a poor team player.
- Senet1 : I believe he will as we graducally put better players around him and build this team.
- Senet1 : Goalie I agree with Avatar. PK is the present and future of this teams defence. I would not even take Staal from Pittsburg unless I had him tied up in a long term contract of a Minimum of 5 years. Also once has to consider the salary difference. Pk is on the move up probably 3M plus for his next contract and then eventually 4-5M if he keeps on improving. He has moved his game up two gears since he came into the league 2 years ago. He now has to move to the next level and I believe he will as w
- Avatar37 : pressure playing in Montreal, since he has problems with the expectations in Washington and Montreal isn't any easier. Then again, the media were very easy on Kovalev, so maybe it's a Russian thing? No idea. Anyway, yeah, it would have to be an established star that gives us an immediate drastic upgrade at forward, that's the only way I'd trade PK, because we'd be giving up a potential QB on our blueline for the next decade.

Joshtm is a hack.
May 28, 2007 at 7:11 pm
OUr winning percentage was horrific without this stud on defence so signing him was a must. 5.75 is alot however he would have gotten 7 on the open market. WE would have had to spend at least 6 to get timonen so keeping Markov is the best move. Good job Gainey. Just dont sign Briere to 7 million please.
May 28, 2007 at 7:17 pm
Yeah, we had this sign this guy. I think 5.75 million is a lot of money, but how much would this guy have cost elsewhere ?
With the same money, could we have get better guys ? Don’t think so, it would have cost more money to get something like him, or two other guy less good. So we needed him. If we lost him, we would have go no more defense at all, I can only think of Komisarek, who is getting better and better and markov is helping him in that way.
But I still believe we could have signed him for a bit less, like 5.25. But that’s Gainey budget, not sure it’s good but what can I say. I still think he gave too much money to Koivu and Kovalev (I am not talking about samsonov here).
Go Habs Go !

You have to admit, Markov has what it takes, but what everyone forgets is Hockey is a team sport. Unless you have constant level of defense, having a great defenseman on one line for only part of the game means what, some 40 or 45 minutes of watching Dandenault and Bouillon basically destroy the defense, and basically ruin the confidence of up and coming rookies? It’s like having one really nice tire on the car and using cheapies for the rest….guess what, its gonna ruin your ride and your engine….and it looks weird.
May 29, 2007 at 2:32 am
Yeah and playing Markov with just inexperienced and immature players is like putting a Nascar engine in a chevette. ITs just a waste.
May 29, 2007 at 4:46 am
I still prefer to have Markov and inexperienced or immature instead of only inexperienced and immature players…..
May 29, 2007 at 5:37 am
Too much money. But it’s pretty much the going rate, and with all the negative press about racism towards Russian players in Montreal this past season, I guess they had to throw their wallet at the only Russian who apparently still wants to play for the habs. This doesn’t bode well for a Souray signing, which saddens me, as I kind of enjoyed having an effective power play the last few seasons.
May 29, 2007 at 11:06 am
Wow!! big bucks, can’t wait to see what K-man and Higgy will end up with
May 29, 2007 at 2:21 pm
Hey guys….love the banter between you freaking loons…Just to see can be the 1st to log in and write “Joshtm is a hack”…nice work Higgy 21…Actually, I think Josh is quite funny and insightful, but question….Did Messers Boullion and Dandy diss you at a card signing event…or not push your wheelchair around at the annual Christmas skating party ??…Come onnnnnnn…those 2 are not that bad…what’s the dealio ?
The Duker…pukin’ on your radio in Toronto
May 29, 2007 at 3:23 pm
LOL hey Josh why not answer your own posts somemore !!!
God your some funny dude …. you have nothing new to say yet? Just more of the same huh ?
We know we know Bob is bad , Carbo is bad, Koivo, is bad, Johnson and all the others are bad, there is nothing good, everyone is bad, the habs are doomed, ect ect ect !!!
Yes Josh we know we know …
Good to see Markov bad hope to see some more news real soon …
May 29, 2007 at 3:25 pm
That was spose to read Good to see Markov back …we need to be able to edit our posts here how hard would that be to setup… geeze we are in 2007 you know?
May 29, 2007 at 5:15 pm
I think dandenault and boullion tag teamed joshtm’s old lady thats why he has such a hate on for them lol.
May 29, 2007 at 5:54 pm
Great sigining, I can honestly say that i dont care what happens tom ontreals defense corps as long as that when the dust settles, komisarek and markov are still around. I dont care about the other defensmen.
May 29, 2007 at 7:38 pm
Detroit can have Dandeneault for nothing if they take Sammy off our hands. Let CUbe stay for another year. AN injury free offseason will really help his game.
May 29, 2007 at 7:57 pm
At 5.75 per year, this is the going rate for a guy like Markov so it’s fair to the market value.
But you can kiss Souray goodbye. His shot and leadership will be missed. His defensive play, passing and skating won’t.
May 29, 2007 at 8:16 pm
Geeze, aren’t we missing our Lithium pills today? Is the sun a bit hot today on you? Cause hey you are just radiating there, drink a bit of salt to go with your brown nosing of those losers. If you can’t see Dandenault for being what he is, a really lousy defenseman, and the other just as lousy defenseman and all those losses we had to endure all year long, like, gee, Habs fans, eyes open but brain ain’t working….no wonder Gainey can rip you off, and give you the con job of “great chemistry” for Sakku’s slump, Johnson’s slips, and Kovalev’s elbow and don’t forget Jack Todd’s fav. Rivet’s Flu….and we can’t forget the food poisoning excuse.
No wonder Gainey used the same words as the “w” he is just as dense and stupid.
It is sad that Gainey would sign Markov for so much for so long, leaving very little room to manouver, yet continuing to waste money on the likes of Dandenault and Bouillon, and praising **** like Johnson, Ninnima and Samsonov.
Honestly, how much more obvious “go phoque yourselves Habs fans” by both Gainey and Kovalev do you have to hear from Bob and Alexei to figure it out? Crazy Bob doesn’t care.
And what’s this bull about inexperienced and immature players. Listen buddy, it was the rookies that pulled us out of the slump. Because guess what, your great heroes Sakku and Alexei were busy being guess what “immature and inexperienced” leaders. Most of the Habs dynasty was won with guess what “immature and inexperienced” rookies, ala Dryden, and the list goes on and on.
It is sad when Crazy Bob doesn’t take advantage of his “immature and inexperienced” players like oh gee, the Ducks and the Senators, who have managed to play in the playoffs so many years in a row.
What a pile of **** about “building” the team, as opposed to Sakku worrying that he would get the boot that he so justly deserves for basically destroying the season with his prima donna hooks and turning a power play into a power play against the habs. How many “great” hockey players have that stupid and unique skill of destroying a promising offense with young rookies and turn it into a horrible loss at the hands of lousy defensemen like Ninnima, Dandenault, and Bouillon?
Where the hell was Johnson all this time that he was supposedly shutting down Crosby and Alfredsson? No where, he is the great white ghost on the team, the spirit falling on the ice after he gets so boozed up he can’t even check instead he falls on the other team….how many times did we see that?
What kind of GM would keep a coach who changes lines more often than his socks? Man that was so Un-NHL-like, what is so professional about that? What kind of “great God-like” wisdom is that for a GM to watch his coach basically destroy a winning momentum with getting rid of rookies who were responsible for all the victories and benching good players just so Dandenault and Bouillon and even friggen Samsonov and Johnson could get more ice time so they “could get better”….well it sure didn’t work that way, I still can’t believe Gainey would say something like that. Ya right, they were so good they cost us a foot into the door of the playoffs. So answer this, if Gainey is so good, why did he allow all the **** that went on, the prima donna complaints by Rivet, Kovalev and even Koivu?
HUH????
May 30, 2007 at 2:50 am
Its sad that you wasted so much of a may evening to wrtie all that funk.
May 30, 2007 at 2:17 pm
Well, after i heard the news about the Markov signing i had to let it digest a little. Obviously this means that Souray will sign elsewhere…my guess is in Anaheim because they feel they need to hoard all the best defenseman in the league.
I personally love Souray here in Montreal, however if Markov is worth almost six million a season, Souray will be commanding close to 7 mill after his “career” year. I would rather see him leave than to give him that kind of money, only to end up with another Bryan Mccabe scenario because we all know Souray will not be scoring 26 goals next year, probabaly not even 15. Good luck to Souray with his future team, but lets concentrate on fixing the in-house problems with our money in aquiring another top centre-man, and a scoring winger. I am sick and tired of seeing Kovalev’s talent go to waste because he either does not want to play here, or is injured or againg or just really is passive about winning. I like the prospect of briere coming to town…we need a player that we can brag about, a scorer…someone who will actually be up there with the leaders in scoring. When was the last time we had a player net over 80 points anyway?
We have great youth on the team and i see great promise in Higgins, Ryder, Komisarek,Plekanec and Latendresse. Koivu is entering the twilight of his career and is really passionate about winning here in Montreal. Only a couple missing pieces and we will have a stanley cup winner in no time. I predict with confidence a cup banner raised in this city within 5 years.
Any comments to that?
May 30, 2007 at 3:43 pm
Well said Chris, I agree. But on only a couple of missing pieces I have to disagree, a bit, more like we have way too many wrong pieces to begin with to really have a cup contender.
May 30, 2007 at 8:35 pm
I don’t understand why Carbo and Gainey don’t remember that size and talent are a key ingredent to building a winner, they should emulate Burke and the Ducks!
May 30, 2007 at 11:39 pm
I Agree with Josh. ME and you are like kindred spirits. We are confused and have many problems. BUt when it comes to hockey we know best. THe media is Montreal is correct about everything they right and really should be the people running the team. TIcket prices should be free and only players under the age of 22 should be allowed to play for the habs. Okay maybe 23. WE should trade away all leaders and big name players so that when youngsters like Higgins and Komi become free agents they will have no reason to stay and take off. Also the team should move from Montreal to HULL.
May 30, 2007 at 11:49 pm
Lapierre should be captain and play on the PP with Latendresse and Begin. Also we should bring up Groulx, CHipchura and Milroy to be the second PP unit. ALso me and Josh will be taking over the off ice services. NO more jerseys or flags allowed in the arena. ALso no cheering of encouragement for the team after the opening face off. THis is a business and we should not be able to enjoy the team unless it is run like a regular 9-5 job. ALso no families allowed anymore and we will decide where eveyrone sits and encourage opposing teams fans to attend the games. NO more beer or food sold at the games. Just water and sour grapes. We must remember we are not fans to enjoy the game or to have hope. We must only be critics. HOckey is a business and must not be taken to heart. IF we win we say nothing, if we lose we will be heard. THIS IS THE WAY OF ME AND JOSH>
May 30, 2007 at 11:57 pm
WE must remember it is not about trying to win a cup. IT is about bringing youth to teh team. IT is about giving up on players before they have a second chance. IF a player is hurt like BOullion and misses the whole offseason workout and is behind the eight ball and has a bad year, he is out. NO questions asked. Players dont rebound. Like cmon Sure Selanne is a great player agian and was **** three years ago but how often does that happen. ONly about 40 percent of the time. INjuries dont cut it. If a player is almost blinded and has a career year but takes a few hoopking players then we get rid of him. ITs not about building a cup contender, its about getting rid of players as soon as they upset us a little. SUre Latendresse may be extremely slow, overly confident and overated but we like him because he is young and has a chance to become better one day. NOT FASTER OF COURSE. We want order not a cup. But wait what will happen when we get everything we want. Well thats the fun part, we will find new reasons and new names to target. HAHAHAHAHA
May 31, 2007 at 8:07 pm
Okay, We all know that Souray asks for a bit much, but personally the guys deserves it. If we lose Markov, we need Souray, I love Souray. It is very difficulty to score 28 goals in a season as a DEFENCEMAN! I mean not even the offensive players score that many goals and for sure there will be changes because the Habs didn’t make the playoffs this year, but there is no reason to sign Souray somewhere else. If anything Begin should leave, he’s done absolutely nothing this season and Carboneau should talk some sense into Kovalev, all of a sudden he stopped being amazing like he used to be. I’m pretty shocked at what kind of money Markov is making, Souray will defenatly ask for at least 7 million if Markov is getting 6. Don’t trade Souray! That’s for sure. With an 100 mph slap shot, Gainey better leave him where he is!
Go HABS GO!

Have you just awaken from a comma? We signed Markov to a to a 4 year deal…so we’re not losing him unless we want to. May you have split personalities? Because you go on to state this fact later in your post about how Markov terms of his contract. Then you go on ripping Begin? Begin’s return from his injury (broken foot) although premature definatly not at 100% and playing as a 4th liner, gave the team a boost by adding heart to our team that was struggling to show up during one of the most horrific losing steaks in recent history. Souray would be a great player to keep but the same goes for players such as Smyth, Breire, Drury, ect. at what point does the cost out weigh the benefit?
