Back to Back Losses
-
The Canadiens lost two consecutive games for the first time this season.
The Habs managed a 1 goal lead early and for most of the game looked as though they’d hang on to the win.
David Abeischer played very well. You have to feel bad for him, he plays a strong game, is 5 minutes away from a shutout win and then the Canadiens crumble and it’s a 2-1 OT loss. Not even a chance in the shoot out.
Brodeur was weak on the Habs first goal but typical Brodeur showed up for all the other Canadiens scoring threats and didn’t allow them a more commanding lead.
The real question now is how the Habs will battle back from their first losing ‘streak’. If you can call two games a streak.
The Habs have not been in this position yet and it’ll be interesting to watch how they respond.
Another game tonight against the surprisingly good and well coached Islanders. To be followed by another evening with the Sabres. It won’t be easy.

Vintage Habs Blog
- goalie : I can't type.... what a faux pas on my behalf...
- goalie : I just realized what I said adn didn't say yesterday. What a fayx as on my behalf. Regarding coaching Randy Cunnyworth MUSDT stay as an assistant- he deserves at least that after the tremendous job he did in the latter part of this past season. I'd still mlike to have Robinson, Carbo adn Allard on the staff also.
- Avatar37 : I agree Senet, my choice if we can't have Cunneyworth would be Crawford, Robinson on defense, Cunneyworth for offense, and Carbo as offense/faceoffs .
- Senet1 : I think if I had my choice it would be Crawford and see if he could get Carbo and Robinson as assistants. That would be my idea coaching team.
- goalie : I witnesed Marc Crawford MANY times when the Avs, etc. played against Oilers and let me tell you - he is constantly on the referees asses virtually game after game. He is the complete OPPOSITE of J. Martin. Crawford is calm on TSN but he is one excited coach behind the bench. A friend of mine who was an NHL linesman for 26 years said they dreaded Crawford he was so tough on the officials!
- goalie : You know, I've bee thinking about the coaching situation. I'd be really excited if the Habs had Hartley as head coach and Carbo adn Robinson as his assistants. I also read it somewhere about a month ago that Toronto's goalie coach Allard (?) wants to relocate back to Montreal where he has his goaltending school/business. Add him to the mix and I'd say the Habs would be in great shape coaching wise.
- Avatar37 : Well, from what I recall, Hartley didn't do all that well with the Thrashers. But, I don't know enough about him to judge one way or the other. Crawford I do know, and he always seemed to be a good, level headed coach to me.
- Senet1 : even Pacioretty two years ago did not impress any of us. Younger players have to play and make mistakes and learn from those mistakes. If they sit in the press box they are learning nothing.
- Senet1 : Of course if he have some good assistants like a Larry Robinson to teach the young defence and someone like Carbo to teach faceoffs etc. then your coach does not have to be as good at teaching. If Hartley fits the bill you get no argument from me. My only previous point is that if he is impatient with your younger players to the point that he does not play them, then we are right back where we were with Martin. Martin was a good coach too, but how he handled Emelin, PK and even Pacioretty two
- goalie : I would like to see the Habs sign a coach who realizes that our team isn't tough enough (we need to get bigger and somewhat more nastier),the coach needs t be a great TEACHER and be a coach who can get the players to understand and buy into his system. Other than that I couldn't care what lingo he speaks. I wnat to see our team become a ligitimate contender fast!
- HabsLoseAgain : Well we dont know if he is or is not a teaching coach. I woukd just hate to paint Hartley something that he is not. There will always be questions but if Hartley was hired as the habs new bench boss i for one would not be overly upset.
- Senet1 : My thoughts are not that he is or is not a good coach but rather that when he won the cup he had an experience team of superstars on that team. Where as we have a group of young inexperienced players, is he a teaching coach or a tactical coach or both? I am not question whether he is a good coach, but my question therefore is he the coach for us at this point in the deveopment of our team?? Not sure we are all purely speculating at the moment?
- Senet1 : Something happened to my first post. I will try again.
- Senet1 : That is why I said I am not sure he is the coach for us at this time? Right now we are all speculating including yourself, because non of us know for sure?
- HabsLoseAgain : Crawford also won a cup with Patrick Roy so would you say he is a good coach or did he just have great players and one of the best goaltenders of alltime?
- HabsLoseAgain : Senrt so please give me some reasons why you think Hartley is not the coach the habs need right now. What is it that you do not like about him or his coaching style?
- HabsLoseAgain : Well all great coaches had great players playing for them so i guess you you add a a pile of other coaches to that list including Bowan......
- Senet1 : Hartley, was he a good coach or did he just have great players and one of the best altime goaltenders of all time. I am not sure that he is the type of coach that this organization needs right now. Unless of course we sign a ton of free agents.
- Avatar37 : However, my feelings may completely be wrong, Hartley may turn out to be a good fit.
- Avatar37 : I didn't say Hartley was unknown, I said we demoted a good coach in Cunneyworth and now have an unknown quantity because we don't have a coach. I don't have that great a feeling about Hartley, I'd be much more comfortable with Crawford.
- HabsLoseAgain : In my opinion i think he might be a good fit in montreal. Oh and he also likes to have a tough team.
- HabsLoseAgain : Also this year he coached the ZSC Lions to the swiss championship title.
- HabsLoseAgain : lol the so called "unknown" won a cup in 2000-2001 with the colarado avalanch.
- HabsLoseAgain : lol Bob Hartley is not an unknown lol.....sheesh.
- Senet1 : I think he has until the trading deadline to show us that he deserves to be on this team. If he does not get back on track then he could be simply a 2nd round draft pick to whoever we can trade him to.
- Avatar37 : Bourque reminds me of Pouliot, size, skill, and invisible. He needs to get back to playing a physical game and bang people around and maybe he'll start getting some of those garbage goals again. Need to get to the front of the net. I hope he can find his game again.
- Avatar37 : We had a good coach in Randy Cunneyworth. Now we have an unknown, with Bob Hartley rumoured to be the front runner. I'd rather have Cunneyworth.
- goalie : A player like Rene Bourwue has al the physical attributes of what would be a beter than average player. Hwever, he certainly didn't play that well especially after being in Montreal about three weeks. We NEED players like Rene to play hard AND produce points on a REGULAR BASIS in order for us to be competitive.
- Senet1 : MONTREAL – Rene Bourque had a rocky start to his career as a Hab, but he’s planning on using the next four years to make up for it. After arriving in Montreal under less-than-ideal circumstances in January, Bourque spent the following 38 games hoping to find the spark he needed to rekindle his offensive production. Despite flanking Tomas Plekanec on the team’s second line to close out the season, the 30-year-old sniper suddenly found himself firing blanks in his new NHL home.
- Senet1 : I think we have to be patient and not expect too much too soon. Let's get a strong management team in place, make a good choices in the draft get a good coach and then see what we need at the free agent market. I will not be too disapointed if we miss the playoffs again next year if it means a long term team success. We have the opportunity to make some major strides over the next two years at the draft table. Then we fill in the holes.
- goalie : I certainly agree that we need to get some impact forwards who will sign for 5 years, not for a season then walk away. That's not going to help us.
- goalie : I wouldn't trade PK for Ovetchkin no matter what. He is a coach's NIGHTMARE and a poor team player.
- Senet1 : I believe he will as we graducally put better players around him and build this team.
- Senet1 : Goalie I agree with Avatar. PK is the present and future of this teams defence. I would not even take Staal from Pittsburg unless I had him tied up in a long term contract of a Minimum of 5 years. Also once has to consider the salary difference. Pk is on the move up probably 3M plus for his next contract and then eventually 4-5M if he keeps on improving. He has moved his game up two gears since he came into the league 2 years ago. He now has to move to the next level and I believe he will as w
- Avatar37 : pressure playing in Montreal, since he has problems with the expectations in Washington and Montreal isn't any easier. Then again, the media were very easy on Kovalev, so maybe it's a Russian thing? No idea. Anyway, yeah, it would have to be an established star that gives us an immediate drastic upgrade at forward, that's the only way I'd trade PK, because we'd be giving up a potential QB on our blueline for the next decade.

What a Boring game. Typical against them. I thought the new NHL was suppose to eliminate this. Wonder why there were only a handful of fans at the game.
Anyways, lets hope this is not the beginning of their mid-season slump.
Y’en aura pas de facile lol

B-O-R-I-N-G !!!!
NO wonder there was so many empty seats at the Deadowlands. The cheers were louder for the habs there mainly due to that one fat habs fan they keep showing on RDS. Wake up Lou Lam if you want fans, you have to open up the gameplan. I have never been so bored watching a hockey game.
P.S The cross check on Ryder vs boston does not get called yet Souray’s love tap on NJ gets called in OT. Pathetic!!!!! Wake up refs.
December 7, 2006 at 10:44 am
CLaude Julien should be embarassed of himself. The fans were so bored I saw a couple reading the bussiness section of their newspapers in OT. What a joke. What new NHL?
Imagine if we were Devils fans and had to watch that 82 games a year.
December 7, 2006 at 10:44 am
A year ago, the Habs started finding ways to lose games, especially the 1-goal type. Kovalev and Markov were out… similar to last night (Kovy was there physically, but…). Now is the time the Habs will establish themselves as one of the top contenders, or desperately battling for a playoff spot in the spring; the one-goal games are must-wins.
Frustratingly, as against the Bruins, the Habs played a better game, but for whatever reason simply could not put the game away. You can’t really blame the defence or goaltending for yesterday night. The third line was actually threatening throughout. So where does the “blame” lie?
Firmly in the second line, which is now officially becoming a problem. The opposition knows they’re not too threatening, so the checking lines can be redistributed to cancel Koivu and Bonk’s lines. I am absolutely not one of those to demand a trade… not sure what will solve the issue. However, when Kovalev and Samsonov aren’t lighting up the scoreboard, something must be done. Too much wasted talent. Don’t get me wrong, when those guys get in gear, watch out!! But when is when??????
Can we wait until Higgins is back to try him on the second line? Will Higgins be back at his early season level? Is that the solution?
Despite a couple of wins, the past few games have not been pretty. Time for Carbo to start carefully playing with the lines and Bob to think short to medium term strategy.
Just some thoughts. Fact is the Habs played a better game and came out with only 1pt (giving 2 to a potential playoff spot opponent). I’m pissed!!
December 7, 2006 at 11:08 am
WOW, great RDS Habs &Isles tonite, then KENNY VS SPENNY to cheer me up,hate to say it ,but here comes 3 in a row….
December 7, 2006 at 11:23 am
We have never done well in NJ or long island. Probably because both arena’s are dull, dark and empty. We won there last year in February but Higgy had 2 goals and 2 assists in that one. NO higgy tonight. WE have got to start having better first periods. Last night 3 penalties in 3 minutes. That was a joke.
December 7, 2006 at 12:18 pm
Three things I thought about at work last night while I listened to the Hamilton Bulldogs (Baby Habs) beat the Toronto Marlies (Baby Laffs) on my Walkman… When is Higgins due back? When will the Habs call up Kyle Chipchura, is he the missing link? And wouldn’t it be great to stick it to the Laffs by acquiring Sundin for the stretch run and winning the Cup? Not surprized by the Devils’ comeback, they dull you asleep for the whole game and pounce when you’re snoring away. Expect a win tonight in Long Island and another Saturday against the Sabres…
December 7, 2006 at 1:35 pm
Souray shoots, Souray scores, Souray’s on the ice for all the other teams goals, Souray hasn’t learned not to touch the opposing player with his stick, Souray’s a minus player even with all those points, Souray’s a liability in his own end!
The Habs NEED this game against the Isles. No surprisingly not terrible Yashin, no surprisingly not terrible Dipietro, they need to take advantage.
December 7, 2006 at 2:48 pm
Hey Habs 1:
YOu do realize that PP points do not count for your plus/minus ratings right? IT is just even strength. That penalty is OT was pathetic. He should of just cross checks in teh back of the knee and made him fall to the ground instead because apparently that is not a penalty. Souray 3 turnovers last night. Bouillon 15 turnovers. Perezhogin 439 turnovers last night.
December 7, 2006 at 3:20 pm
I see Souray’s practice with Gainey worked well. You know, knock over your own goalie so the other team can score the tying goal, and oh yes, pass the puck to the other team so it takes all the gas out of the game….oh and we can’t forget the stupid penalty.
Actually Streit and Ninnima basically were ****, Streit is overpaid, over-rated, heck even Kostysisn could do a better job than Streit. Just what the heck is Gainey thinking?
Oh wait, he has the medical team acting as scouts with instructions on finding the smallest, broken down players who are guaranteed to get hurt….and oh yes offer them outrageous salaries….
We could have used Youpi, at least Youpi would have tried actually moving the puck out and carrying over the other team’s blue line…
December 7, 2006 at 3:33 pm
holy positive attitude joshtm.
December 7, 2006 at 4:39 pm
Maybe the Chieftans can lend them Paul Newman, those evil twins in black rim glasses, and oh yes that Quebecois goalie…that’s what Montreal needs, some pizzaz, some new blood, time to ship in the rookies from Hamilton to show Souray tips on what a defensemen actually does, and ship Streit and Ninny down awaiting to be traded…how does that sound?
December 7, 2006 at 5:45 pm
Well what about Mikhail Grabovski as a second line center. We can give a shot, i heard that he started to be dominant with the Ham’s bulldogs.
December 7, 2006 at 6:48 pm
Hey SNAKE who was the hab fan that they kept showing last night in New Jersey because I was there going nuts for the Habs??? Just wondering
December 7, 2006 at 7:05 pm
Josh, what the hell r u talking about?
The most impressive thing about last night’s game was the play of ninnima..he was beyond average last night he was actually GOOD! The best game he’s played as a hab anyway…And why don’t you whiners shut the hell up!
Jesus everyone’s happy when we don’t show up to play but win! And pissed when we actually put in the effort and lose! Of course the latter is harder to swallow!(no comments on the Swallow analogy there snake!)But the canadiens problems are simple ones to fix! And it envolves the SECOND LINE…Don’t believe me,,,wait to see the trade that comes down with’n the firs 3 games of Higg’s return! That’s all bob’s waiting for!!!
Tonight’s prediction
MTL:4 NY:2
GO HABS GO!
December 7, 2006 at 7:16 pm
Gainey, Andy Murray and the entire front office were at the game last night and Gainey had meetings with Samsonov and Carbonneau and he was talking with Murray who’s the Habs proffesional scout. That really smells like somethings up. I think Carbonneau might try to use Samsonov with Kovalev or by himself with Koivu but if that doesn’t work then Sammy may go soon or something will happen.
Remember the last time Gainey had meetings like that on the road last year was in Colorado when he decided to fire Julien and since the odds aren’t even slim to none(there just none) that he’s firing Carbonneau then something big may happen soon.
December 7, 2006 at 8:43 pm
Nice start to the game,I think im going to puke!!!
December 7, 2006 at 11:03 pm
Well, the Ryder-Koivu-Kovalev line rocked during the powerplays.
December 7, 2006 at 11:10 pm
Nice win!! Ryder was flyin out there tonight he should have had at least 3 goals tonight. Koivu had a great game. If they can play like that then the goals will come. Oh, and the Laff’s lost…again!!GO HABS GO!!!
December 7, 2006 at 11:11 pm
I thought we played pretty well. offensively, we had alot of chances. see what happens when you skate? but what are we going to do with Ryder? He looks like he’s totally frustrated, and has no confidence. my god, all the chances he had! he couldn’t score if his life depended on it! But, nevertheless, Samsonov was invisible, AS USUAL! perhaps a trade involving, Samsonov(casper, the friendly ghost), and Souray(Mr. giveaway) would land us that coveted 2nd line centerman we so desperately need. so the bleeding stops at 2 losses. I really enjoyed watching leafs lose. maybe Maurice will get fired, if they lose a couple more. hope so. tough game for us on Saturday. sabres in town.
December 7, 2006 at 11:16 pm
Boy did I just get a heart attack – after the finish of the game I logged onto CBS Sportsline to see the headline “Markov out for 3 weeks with broken hand”!!! Fortunately for the Habs it is Danny M. that is out. Great game tonight.
December 7, 2006 at 11:18 pm
HEADS UP!!!
Sabers lost to FLA We gained 2 points there!
T.O lost to Bos we gained 2 point there!
We meet Buff on Saturday should be a tough one but The best bloody hockey you could asl for! can’t wait!
Go Habs Go!
December 7, 2006 at 11:23 pm
Habman:
Did you watch the game on FSN????(just wondering lol)
December 7, 2006 at 11:27 pm
2 pts for boston though.
boston is really rolling lately.
December 7, 2006 at 11:45 pm
Yes I did. Boy’s the Leaf fans are a depressed lot on this night. Six straight losses. They’ll never catch us now. GO HABS GO!!!
December 7, 2006 at 11:56 pm
The Habs needed some momentum going up against Buffalo on Saturday and they got it curtesy of captain Koivu. Who possibly could have thought that he could have been on his way to a career season if he stays healthy after a career threatening eye injury? And Samsonov just dosen’t seem happy in MTL so he’d probably would be better off somewhere else.
And the attendence in Long Island didn’t even surpass 10000(anounced attendence was 9551). How pathetic is that?
December 8, 2006 at 1:11 am
Oh yeah baby we rock!!!
I got an idea, how about we take the whole 2nd line out of the game? They take away time that could be given to bonk or koivu to make extra goals
December 8, 2006 at 2:20 am
There won’t be any changes till Higgins comes back.
They will try him as the second line centre.
Plekanec will move to center the 4th line.
If Higgins can’t revive Kovalev and Samsonov than all hope is lost.
Then and only then Gainey will start to shuffle the deck via trade/FA signing
Let’s hope Higgins can bring that 2nd line to life.
The more Sharks lose the more Marleau gets closer. I ONLY WISH!
Go Habs Go!
December 8, 2006 at 4:00 am
Did I hear Jacques Demers correctly last night? Did he suggest that Gaigney admit to making a mistake and send Samsonov to the minors? I was reading a book to my daughter, so I just caught it in the background.
December 8, 2006 at 11:07 am
‘The more the Sharks lose the more Marleau get’s closer’. Dream on. That’s even less likely then Lecavelier coming to MTL. They’ve got more points then Montreal, they’re probably the 2nd best team on the west, and he’s their Koivu. There’s no way in hell they’re trading him unless your willing to give up Souray, Higgins, Plekanec and 1 or 2 first round picks.
By the way, he’s NOT french canadian. Born and raised an in Saskatchewan.
December 8, 2006 at 12:31 pm
Wow that is quite a bit to give up for Marleau. Higgins and a 1st would land him. ALthough I wouls not be prepared to trade Higgy. Marleau is our poster boy for success. I have always liked him but I have a feeling if he were on the Habs within a month half the posters here would be haters.
December 8, 2006 at 12:32 pm
Hey if people can get on Souray they can get on anyone.
