Brisebois Back?

Long time Canadiens punching bag Patrice Brisebois may be back with the CH.
Bob Gainey has apparently made him a contract offer.

- Senet1 : Actually I agree it was a good move for them to play a shorter season and get the experience. He could not have played in the minors this year he would have had to play junior or the NHL. However, he now has a year under him and knows what to expect next year and hopefully take a bigger responsibility on the team. Did you see those two goals in the bronze game? Wow.
- muller93 : Good move by the Habs not having Galchenyuk play in the minors. Now Galchenyuk has 1 year in the NHL and playoff experience this is going to pay off big time come next year.
- Senet1 : Galchenyuk scores to back to back goals in shoot out to help USA win Bronze metal. I did not see the second goal but the first was a beauty.
- Senet1 : So we could pick anywhere from 25th to 23rd depending on who wins these quarter final series.
- Senet1 : First, is the 14 teams in the lottery. Then there are 12 teams that did not make the semi finals in the order of the seasonal finish, Then there are the four teams in the semi final the first two eliminated pick in the order of the regular season points total and the last two based on who wins and who loses the cup. So as it stand now if say Detroit beats Chicago then Detroit moves up to pick after us. Boston or NYR will move up and pick after us. LA or San Jose will move up and pick after us
- Senet1 : Basically, I was wrong about the draft pick situation. There are three groups of drafting teams within the 30 teams.
- Senet1 : seriously ready to challenge for the cup. He will us win games but he will not be the difference between winning the cup and not winning the cup. You pick up players like that once you have the team ready to challenge,.
- Senet1 : I am looking at the players to draft and there are a lot of big 6'3-6'5 forwards available ion the draft this year. If we could draft 3-4 big young players in the 2nd and 3rd round why would you want to give that up for a roster player who may have 2-3 years at best. If we are going to build a winner to have to build it with bigger players and there are a lot of good big players available this year. So you sign Ott and he is with us for the short run, but probably not when we are seriously re
- Senet1 : Boullion is a great mentor for the young D-men
- muller93 : Boullion is one of MBs great additions--Boull ion is a definite Keeper.
- muller93 : Getting rid of Kaberle frees up a lot of cash. Boullion is small but is reliable and doesn't back down from anyone.
- muller93 : Exactly Goalie any thoughts on a punishing D-man?
- goalie : They;re showing determination adn skill vs Ducks and Blackhawks.
- goalie : REd Wings could turn out to be the surprise team of this year's playoffs!
- goalie : WE need to rid our team of Kaberle and Webber. Step two would be to then move Diaz. If we get that big d-man I believe that would push Boullion to # 7 on the chart. We'd then go with Georges, PK,Markov (to continue mentoring Ememlin) Tinordi as our starting six . THEN I'd be excited about our chances. We could then work on getting bigger forwards.
- goalie : I too would gladly give up a 3rd round pick for Ott- the type of player we sadly lack. AND if we could get one more rugged, expeienced defenceman it would help immensely.
- muller93 : Senet what you are saying makes sense but if we can get Ott for a 3rd round I'll take that all day.
- muller93 : MB should be looking at a big D-man first, even though I like our blue line with the addition of Tinordi. We need that insurance just in case one gets injured. Also I'm a firm believer in starting with the goalie first then-defense-for wards-and we already have good goalie. We have all noticed when we have the lead Price is tough to beat.
- Senet1 : So sometimes you have to sacrifice for one year or two to build that team in the draft. then add the finishing touches through FA and trades.
- Senet1 : Muller, Detroit is another good example. They have been in the hunt every year with good well balanced teams yet only one or two cups to show for it. However, they have built a team that has a chance every years for the last 10+ years. That is what I think we have a chance to do this year with a good draft. It reminds me of the habs teams of the mid 80 and 90's we built a team then with sold draft picks and won the cup twice during that time period. So sometimes you have to sacrifice a one
- muller93 : Very true Senet, you do need luck and we haven't had any luck it seems since the habs moved to the Bell Center. We had an incredible run in 2010 with some crazy goal tending from Halak. With Galchenyuk-Tinor di-Gallagher all in 1 year--not too bad, even with an early exit in the playoffs.
- Senet1 : Muller I guess we all have our own ideas, but there has never been too many times that were successful when they traded their draft picks away. We have a chance to build this team so we have a shot at winning the cup over the next 10 years. Even as good as Pittsburgh has been they have only won the cup once since Crosby and Malkin have been with the team. That is because you not only need great players but you need luck to win, but one thing about Pittsburgh they have a chance every year. The
- muller93 : Good point on Torres, he might be a liability. Torres has to tone it down a bit, but that's his game-very aggressive.
- goalie : Though I don't condone what Raffi Torres did - thos shows you how repeat offenders or near offenders are going to be treated. His hit was NOT illegal BUT what the rap sheet adn reputation Torres has he got severly punished. Lesson to be learned by OTHER players because Torres dopesn't learn fromk his mistakes.
- muller93 : Senet normally I would agree with you on not trading draft picks but we are not in a rebuilding stage. Sometimes draft picks can be a roll of the dice and it can take up to 3 years to be NHL ready. We have a good team and I agree with Stuo players like Clowe-Torres-Ott -Scott will make a big difference. Somebody has to protect Gallagher, he can't keep getting hit the way does--we need a tough forward so they think twice before going after Gallagher.
- Senet1 : Really a heathly Habs team would probably win more games against the Pens that we did against the Sens. Reason they Pens would not play as physical against us as against the Sens. If we get good goaltending we win at least two games.
- zpezada4ok : hello all «link»
- stuo11 : hes a tougher big guy too! Just a minor adjustment but will help a bit
- stuo11 : hes better than markov, and hes french who was in mention for defenceman of the year
- goalie : Markov for Beauchemin - an injury prone d-man for an ;old timer'd-man. Beauchemin is NOT what the Habs need in my opinion. He is a HUGE defensive liability.
- goalie : Stuo 11 I'd make that trade with Oilers fast BUT I doubt the Oilers will make that. Two marginal d-men at the best for a switch of first round picks - not a chance .
- stuo11 : markov for beachemin?
- stuo11 : let moen go
- stuo11 : maybe try and get steve begin back
- stuo11 : we wouldve kicked out all other teams but pens, sens,

700K yeah, we got people in the minors earning more. Thats where they will send him if he blunders too much. Teach the kids and stuff. Otherwise, I guess its a little bit of depth.
July 28, 2007 at 4:35 pm
breezer is on his way back, because Bob is moving dandy out in a deal to SJ
July 28, 2007 at 4:45 pm
I agree with you Habs4ever….something is going down.
July 28, 2007 at 5:48 pm
Oh god… Just when you thought Breezeby was gone… like a bad penny, there’s a risk he’ll show up again. It was bad enough when they got Traverse back, thank god they traded him away… but I don’t think anyone is going to want to trade for Brisebois… We’d be better off just bringing up some young blood from Hamilton…
July 28, 2007 at 6:57 pm
Teach the kids Yaeh ?? Do you really want Breezeby teaching the kids ?? Are you normal ??
What’s he gonna teach them ? How to create more turnovers ? Bob is nuts!
July 28, 2007 at 8:14 pm
I see this acquisition happening for several reasons. We, as a VERY YOUNG…and talented team, need some experienced players regardless of their position in the roster. Brisebois can brng this experience and teach it to the youngins.
Moreover, Brisebois may want to finish his career where he started it. Hopefully, retiring with the blue-blanc-rouge after lifting a lord stanley in his last year with Habs!
Furthermore, a deal might be oi the works sending a couple of defensemen to a team and then we would need to bring some new blood from our farm team. As the youngters make their debut in the big league, Brisebois’ experience would serve as a postive element to their future career with the team.
After all, he isn’t that old—> He’s 36 years old. (That’s pretty damn young compared to Shneider and his huge contract !)
C’mon Bob show us what you’ve been working on all summer!
July 28, 2007 at 10:07 pm
OK,now I’m totally disalusioned!WTFIWW Gainey? YOU HAVE LOST IT MAN!STEP DOWN!
July 29, 2007 at 1:16 am
Well, I wouldn’t go so far as to call for Gainey to step down… I really think he’s the best GM that we’ve had since I don’t know when… but Brisebois? Then again, that’s what I thought when he picked up Traverse, but he turned around and traded Traverse for Biron so … maybe there’s some ulterior motive that we’re not aware of going on right now… it can’t be because he seriously wants to see him back with our club… I know I don’t.
July 29, 2007 at 8:29 am
Bringing brisbois means that we have a few extra d-men.Theres got to be more to this than meets the eye.A trade maybe? I dont think the offer to brisbois is as bad as many think. He wont have the presure of being our top defenceman as he was before.(looking back in retrospect thats really sad lol.)Having said all that the one thing that i dont understand about gainey is that when he was asked if he was done with signing ufa’s he said he was done in not so many words and that the strength of the club would come from within.I do believe a rookie could have made the jump instead but what do i know lol. This offer has made everyone a little confused including myself.Just where is gainey going with this remains to be seen.
July 29, 2007 at 9:42 am
i believe there is a trade brewing. perhaps he could be replacing a dandenault or a bouillon. if we brought brisebois back it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world it’s only a 1-year contract at $700,000 and i think he would fit in good as a sixth defenceman playing 10-15 minutes a game
July 29, 2007 at 1:18 pm
Ryder just signed a one year deal with the habs, Thats good news
July 29, 2007 at 2:32 pm
You got to look at his +- He is a +5 for his total and in his last year with the habs he was a +17 (not bad for the whipping boy of montreal)Ok,no he is not a #1 def. but he will not be brought in for that. He will be in(if it happens)for depth and exsperiance. Or as some have said for a trade situation.Ever think that if we trade some players(D-MEN) and sign D.Markov then Brisebois will be there to eat up some min. if the young guys that will make the team falter. They have a bad game you can take them out (sit them for a few) and you have a decent replacement or if one gets injured. And at 700,000 I would wellcome it
July 29, 2007 at 2:49 pm
Of course the question is whether BreezeBy accepts such a bargain basement salary? If he does come back, as koivufan said, playing 10-15, half of which on the power play, might not be such a bad use of an experienced defenceman. In fact, as the #5 or 6 defenseman playing the second power play shift, he may actually be very helpful, post-Souray. The fact that he’s francophone will take some of the heat off Latendresse (and Gainey, for that matter).
I also agree there must be a trade brewing. Carbo and Gainey must want to give a couple of young guys their shot. So, if BB returns, I guess Dandy is gone. IF that’s the trade, Dandy for whatever, it’s not even close to the blockbuster people are looking for. I’d guess a 2nd or more likely 3rd round pick.
Bouillon gets a hard time, but everyone forgets he had half a year off last season due to his foot injury. When he came back, he was obviously not in top form: but the previous season he was inspirational. I think this year he’ll return and fit in very well, maybe paired with Hamrlik… probably have a great season.
Very happy that Ryder is signed (AGAIN for only a year… what’s with that?). I thought last year, despite the 30 goals, he was horrible. He scored in spurts, and rarely when it made a difference; on the first line he was often a waste of space… it was Higgy and Koivu carrying the load. He needs to show us what he’s really got this season.
July 29, 2007 at 3:25 pm
Brisebrois is probably coming back becasue It’s almost tyhe end of his career and It’s obvious his favorite team is the montreal Canadiens. he’s 36 yrs old and this could possibly his last season(if its a 1 year contract.) he spent pretty much his whole career with us. I know it’s more wasted money, but hey, 0.700 million is not that bad. He could trade another one of our D in the future.
July 29, 2007 at 3:27 pm
Yeah, I’d have liked to see Ryder signed for more than 1 year, but keep in mind, maybe it’s his agent or his request to go year by year? I don’t know how many more years until he’s an UFA, but it could be that’s what they’re aiming for… I think it would be helpful to understanding the GM’s job and his decisions if it was made public not only the final agreement but what the player was *asking* for… because as things stand all the blame always seems to land in the GM’s lap and we have no idea what his options were.
I agree that Ryder didn’t seem to show up much last year (or at least as much as during his first year) and yet he was the only 30 goal scorer on our team… Playing in the same system that Kovalev got what, 18 goals? lol … the only thing I’d like to see more is him going to the slot, but … keep up the good work Ryder and keep scoring, lord knows no one else seems to much.
July 29, 2007 at 3:46 pm
Hello all! Longtime no type!!! I have been on a well deserved holiday!! I’ m back!!!
I was talking to Francois, a buddy of mine in Montreal. He said there is a reason for bringing back Brisebois and for the 1 year contract to Ryder. A trade with SJ……Dandenault, Ryder, and a 1st round pick for Marleau.
That wouldn’t be so bad eh?
Let’s see if it actually happens!!!!
July 29, 2007 at 5:11 pm
With Ryder signed we still have around 6-7 mill. So a trade for Marleau and sign him to an extention is looking very good. In this San jose gets Ryder for less money and can resign him to an extention for less then Marleau. We could give him 6 MILL NEXT YEAR and still have lots of cap space for the rest of the players we would like to have….
July 29, 2007 at 5:17 pm
Just wait and see Ryder and dandy to san jose
July 29, 2007 at 7:27 pm
do u wan’t ryder gone!!!- Dandenault- yes I like him, but his days as a hab are done!!! Ryder is a great player.
July 29, 2007 at 8:12 pm
Ryder for $2.95 mil… I think that’s a great deal, considering some of the contracts that were thrown around… Ryder is one of the better young players we have, I hope we don’t trade him.
July 30, 2007 at 10:58 am
San Jose was in the market for a young Dman, and they picked Alexei Semenov Friday; Not a earth shattering move but a young big Dman and about as good as I think we could have offered besides our top prospects… I think they’ll start the season and see how thinks workout with Marleau before they make any decision to trade.
In other news, It looks like we made Adam Proteau’s ~ The Hockey News list of 2007-08 UFA’s that won’t payoff… at number 5 as a good non signing and 3 as a bad signing;

Question:How many ontairo born players on the Laff’s?
August 1, 2007 at 1:35 am
Gainey is patient, Les Boyz. No cause for concern just yet. Let the pre season take hold. Gainey has got his finger on the button – if a trade is needed, voila. It will happen – like last year when Ribsy was sent to the Lone Star State. Have faith – pray to Lord Hab and all will be fine. No go BBQ a burger – extra cheese!!!
August 1, 2007 at 8:16 am
They have a few, but Question. How many BC natives does Vancouver have, or how many AB does Edmonton have. There is more players born in Ont, hence why the leafs have some, just about every team does. Raycroft was picked outta desperation, not because he’s from Ont, mark bell was just aquired for similiar reasons, your argument is bs to say the least.
This isn’t the “Quebec” Nordiques, this is “Montreal” Canadians, big difference.
August 1, 2007 at 1:11 pm
i think ryder is ready 2 go 2 the sharks on the account of his good freind clowe
August 1, 2007 at 6:56 pm
Everyone enjoy Ryder for the last time this year. He’s a traded man walking.
August 1, 2007 at 7:27 pm
I disagree he’s being traded, a one year deal only hurts his value, why would a team want an impending UFA, if gainey signed him to a 3 year deal, he would be easier to move and have higher value, ths one yr deal depreciates his value. i think hes staying.
August 1, 2007 at 7:48 pm
i sure hope ur right habs4ever!!!!!!!!!
August 1, 2007 at 8:37 pm
People gotta stop listening to eklund, all this marleau hype was generated by him. He makes up habs rumours to attract habs fans, like he does the leafs, oilers and any other hockey market, rarely is his blog titled columbus rumours, the guys a fraud and Michael Ryder is staying put.

Pertaining to Brisebois; RDS reporting Meehan has sent a counter offer and the “ball is now in Gainey’s court…”

i have a question for anyone. u think its best 2 leave the team as it is, 2 develop the younger players.
August 2, 2007 at 3:43 pm
When trying to sign a big name free agent, couldn’t Gainey tell the player I’ll give you the maximum salairy for every year you sign (e.g 4 yrs or 5). So, if the max is 8 million this yr, 9 next, 9.5 after that… Wouldn’t that encourage a player like Lecavalier to sign.
On another note, I couldn’t fathom making millions per yr…
August 3, 2007 at 9:06 am
Rubberman ~ I am not sure money is the whole issue for the most part… In this years UFA market, we could have offered upward of $10 million with the new salary cap at $50… That sort contract$$$ is and should be reserved for the elite few franchise players in the league… none of which were available in this years UFA pool.
Gainey offered Briere and Smyth more money than they settled for with their new respective teams for whatever reasons. Those guys are good players but not franchise players. If we want a franchise player like Lecavalier our team will have to prove we’re a worthy top level team. The team needs a winning appeal to sell a player on it’s club. Nobody wants to come into a situation where they’re deemed the savor of an organization because it sets them up for failure. ESPECAILLY MONTREAL…
Another issue every team faces is most Franchise players usually stay within an organization because their repective teams do everything their power to sign them a year prior to FA status. Giving them long expensive contracts which almost guarantees they won’t see a FA market while in their prime. Tampa, however, offers a unique situation (disadvantage), in that, they have a franchise player, but they are also paying Richards franchise player money, along with St. Louis’s making a hefty pay check, with both locked up with No trade clauses making them very difficult to move. Lecavalier has 2 years less on his contract and has no TRADE CLAUSE provisions in place. Another further disadvantage team is that Tampa has inacted a salary CAP lower than the league at around $44 million. This will make it nearly impossible for #1 to resign Lecavalier and #2 pick up the necessary tools to make the team better… (#1 Goalie comes to mind and some Defense support wouldn’t hurt either).
Montreal’s advantage is that Lecavalier is from Montreal. He knows the history, the hockey culture, and the status being successful on the most storied franchise in hockey. Gainey has to sell this point. He needs to emphasize that in order to becaome a LEGEND he must come to a place were LEGENDS are born. Somehow he has to make this point more important than money because Montreal is at a slight tax disadvantage than everywhere else.
Lecavalier is our best opportunity to acquire a star player in my opinion. Gainey is waiting for the chance and hopefully he can pounce on it when it arises. These rarely happen, but waiting patiently…with money in hand, Gainey is lurking for this deal to home bring home the cup and cement his status in history.
August 3, 2007 at 10:34 am
Some of the stuff that Gainey has done are really bad. Think of the big salaries he gave Brisebois (over 4 million a year), and Theodore (over 5.5 M per year), when a lot of people knew that these players were bad. Then came trading Ribeiro for Niniima.. which didnt quite work out well. Now he’s given Hamrlik a superstar salary. It is curious how he manages to overpay a few players quite a lot and also manages to underpay other players.
Id give him one more year. If we dont make the playoffs this year he should be gone along with Charbonneau. If the team doesnt improve dramatically by next year, he should also be gone.
August 3, 2007 at 2:56 pm
YUP – In all due respect, Gainey was not GM when Brisebois and Theo received their contracts and he traded Theo to releave us of his burden. Theo was one of the best goalies the year prior to recieving the contract and Gainey still went after Price his first year as GM. As for Brisbois, he let go to Colorado to recieve the his next payday once his contract expired.
Look at Riberio’s replacement, Pleckanics, who has done his job better at about half the price with twice the attitude improvement. Nimiina was aquired because of injury needs when Bouillon when down.
Time will tell what direction the CH will take… Gainey doing just fine.
August 4, 2007 at 4:30 am
Brisebois is back!!!- not many people have the cohones that he does comming back to Montreal – even after all the heat he got – - far and few people could do what he just did – I just gained new respect for the briser !!! a real winner and a true Montreal Canadien – with all the pressure in Montreal and BS – hats off 2 Brisebois ! go habs go ! Brisebois is now a true leader in the Montreal dressing move ! Simply fantastic – all whom doubt in him now are delusional — and have a couple of marbles missing especially for the price we got him 4 – he’s no loger the 4.2 million dolllar man but a true Montreal champion – his decision will bring a cup back 2 montreal , he will and everybody in 1 year will have to thank brisebois – nrver thought I would have said this but he made it happen! Time will show the pessimist all wrong! Simply fantastic!
August 22, 2007 at 12:00 pm
Dandy and Ryder for Marleau? Doesn’t seem like a bad thing, but can Marleau perform in Montreal is what you gotta ask yourself….Ryder has proved he can. So is this an ingenius move if it happens, or just another case like Lecaire where the powers that be shoot themselves in the foot again.
