The Habs are in the Big Apple tonight to take on the Rangers. A win tonight would give the Canadiens a very respectable 9 points of out 12 on their 6 game road trip.
More impressive is the Habs tally of 10 goals in their past 2 games.
The Rangers are plaing back to back coming off a 6-1 thrashing of the Maple Leafs.
Cristobal Huet gets the start again between the pipes.

- muller93 : MB is forced to go out and get a big D-man. Missing Emelin for almost half the season is the last thing we needed to hear. Now going out and getting a big D-man is a MUST!!!
- muller93 : Now for the Fu**en Bruins who have no business even being in the second round are going to get a nice rest. Yes the same goons who took out one of best D-man for 6 more months. There is NO Fu**en justice. Just venting--Ok i feel better now.
- muller93 : So pissed to see the Rangers lay down and play like total crap. How did the Rangers beat the Caps? This team is playing with no heart--a must win and can only muster 23 shots...PATHETIC !!!
- muller93 : Senet I did see Galchenyuks goal--Made a great move for the game winner. You can see the kid has so much confidence.
- goalie : If Rangers get swept I wonder if Tortorella will get his walking papers? Or Glen Sather? They have tons of 'talent' but zero wins in this series.
- goalie : It's really too bad we lost to the Sens as we would have played the Rangers and the way NYR are playing we would have beat them too. If only. If only!
- Senet1 : Actually I agree it was a good move for them to play a shorter season and get the experience. He could not have played in the minors this year he would have had to play junior or the NHL. However, he now has a year under him and knows what to expect next year and hopefully take a bigger responsibility on the team. Did you see those two goals in the bronze game? Wow.
- muller93 : Good move by the Habs not having Galchenyuk play in the minors. Now Galchenyuk has 1 year in the NHL and playoff experience this is going to pay off big time come next year.
- Senet1 : Galchenyuk scores to back to back goals in shoot out to help USA win Bronze metal. I did not see the second goal but the first was a beauty.
- Senet1 : So we could pick anywhere from 25th to 23rd depending on who wins these quarter final series.
- Senet1 : First, is the 14 teams in the lottery. Then there are 12 teams that did not make the semi finals in the order of the seasonal finish, Then there are the four teams in the semi final the first two eliminated pick in the order of the regular season points total and the last two based on who wins and who loses the cup. So as it stand now if say Detroit beats Chicago then Detroit moves up to pick after us. Boston or NYR will move up and pick after us. LA or San Jose will move up and pick after us
- Senet1 : Basically, I was wrong about the draft pick situation. There are three groups of drafting teams within the 30 teams.
- Senet1 : seriously ready to challenge for the cup. He will us win games but he will not be the difference between winning the cup and not winning the cup. You pick up players like that once you have the team ready to challenge,.
- Senet1 : I am looking at the players to draft and there are a lot of big 6'3-6'5 forwards available ion the draft this year. If we could draft 3-4 big young players in the 2nd and 3rd round why would you want to give that up for a roster player who may have 2-3 years at best. If we are going to build a winner to have to build it with bigger players and there are a lot of good big players available this year. So you sign Ott and he is with us for the short run, but probably not when we are seriously re
- Senet1 : Boullion is a great mentor for the young D-men
- muller93 : Boullion is one of MBs great additions--Boull ion is a definite Keeper.
- muller93 : Getting rid of Kaberle frees up a lot of cash. Boullion is small but is reliable and doesn't back down from anyone.
- muller93 : Exactly Goalie any thoughts on a punishing D-man?
- goalie : They;re showing determination adn skill vs Ducks and Blackhawks.
- goalie : REd Wings could turn out to be the surprise team of this year's playoffs!
- goalie : WE need to rid our team of Kaberle and Webber. Step two would be to then move Diaz. If we get that big d-man I believe that would push Boullion to # 7 on the chart. We'd then go with Georges, PK,Markov (to continue mentoring Ememlin) Tinordi as our starting six . THEN I'd be excited about our chances. We could then work on getting bigger forwards.
- goalie : I too would gladly give up a 3rd round pick for Ott- the type of player we sadly lack. AND if we could get one more rugged, expeienced defenceman it would help immensely.
- muller93 : Senet what you are saying makes sense but if we can get Ott for a 3rd round I'll take that all day.
- muller93 : MB should be looking at a big D-man first, even though I like our blue line with the addition of Tinordi. We need that insurance just in case one gets injured. Also I'm a firm believer in starting with the goalie first then-defense-for wards-and we already have good goalie. We have all noticed when we have the lead Price is tough to beat.
- Senet1 : So sometimes you have to sacrifice for one year or two to build that team in the draft. then add the finishing touches through FA and trades.
- Senet1 : Muller, Detroit is another good example. They have been in the hunt every year with good well balanced teams yet only one or two cups to show for it. However, they have built a team that has a chance every years for the last 10+ years. That is what I think we have a chance to do this year with a good draft. It reminds me of the habs teams of the mid 80 and 90's we built a team then with sold draft picks and won the cup twice during that time period. So sometimes you have to sacrifice a one
- muller93 : Very true Senet, you do need luck and we haven't had any luck it seems since the habs moved to the Bell Center. We had an incredible run in 2010 with some crazy goal tending from Halak. With Galchenyuk-Tinor di-Gallagher all in 1 year--not too bad, even with an early exit in the playoffs.
- Senet1 : Muller I guess we all have our own ideas, but there has never been too many times that were successful when they traded their draft picks away. We have a chance to build this team so we have a shot at winning the cup over the next 10 years. Even as good as Pittsburgh has been they have only won the cup once since Crosby and Malkin have been with the team. That is because you not only need great players but you need luck to win, but one thing about Pittsburgh they have a chance every year. The
- muller93 : Good point on Torres, he might be a liability. Torres has to tone it down a bit, but that's his game-very aggressive.
- goalie : Though I don't condone what Raffi Torres did - thos shows you how repeat offenders or near offenders are going to be treated. His hit was NOT illegal BUT what the rap sheet adn reputation Torres has he got severly punished. Lesson to be learned by OTHER players because Torres dopesn't learn fromk his mistakes.
- muller93 : Senet normally I would agree with you on not trading draft picks but we are not in a rebuilding stage. Sometimes draft picks can be a roll of the dice and it can take up to 3 years to be NHL ready. We have a good team and I agree with Stuo players like Clowe-Torres-Ott -Scott will make a big difference. Somebody has to protect Gallagher, he can't keep getting hit the way does--we need a tough forward so they think twice before going after Gallagher.
- Senet1 : Really a heathly Habs team would probably win more games against the Pens that we did against the Sens. Reason they Pens would not play as physical against us as against the Sens. If we get good goaltending we win at least two games.
- zpezada4ok : hello all «link»
- stuo11 : hes a tougher big guy too! Just a minor adjustment but will help a bit
- stuo11 : hes better than markov, and hes french who was in mention for defenceman of the year

Well i get a kick out you guys that want kovalev, koivu and huet gone.I must be on acid or watching a different montreal canadiens hockey team because when we play good its normally those guys who make it happen, wether its drawing a penalty, making a nice play or making a nice save, these guys are worth more than one power foward,if we did that we would end up lookin like tampa or washington a bottom ranked team depending on the player not the team.
December 30, 2007 at 2:30 pm
I have to agree with habsofthefuture. One look at Atlanta, Washington, Tampa, or even Pittsburgh will show you that spending too much money signing a big name will get your team nowhere fast. Gainey gets a lot of criticism, some of it deservedly so, but he’s being smart about building a team of young committed talented and passionate players who want to stay here. Look at the Stanley Cup winners for the last 10 years. There’s an obvious recipe for success that emerges.
1/ Solid goaltending
2/ A couple of marquee talents, but no real superstars
3/ A solid group of utility players who will play their hearts out and put their bodies on the line in exchange for ice time.
The Habs are closer than most people think to having all the right pieces for a serious playoff run. By serious I mean not just making the playoffs in 7 or 8th spot and dying out in the 1st or 2nd round. We just need maybe 1 power forward.
1 tough guy who can play hockey wouldn’t hurt either. I’m tired of seeing our players mugged on the ice and Komisarek being the only one that can say anything about it with his fists. That’s not his role to play, he’s a big kid but he’s gonna get really hurt and we can’t afford to lose a star defenceman.
GO HABS GO

anyone know why Corey Locke was called up today? Chipchura is in to cover for Streit who had to move back to D to cover for yesterdays injury to O’Byrn ( spelling?)
December 30, 2007 at 5:03 pm
I just read about Locke, I have no idea though. Good analysis by bbr 4ever; the Habs have done it before with no major superstars. You never know, maybe we’ll surprise some people this spring!
December 30, 2007 at 6:08 pm
hABSOFTHEFUTURE,the reasons I mentioned Kovelev ,Ryder and Huet are simple: 1) Kovalev is having a very good year, but not so good last year.Anywho,he’s got a new contract coming to him and he ain’t getting youger,so…..2)Ryder ??????????? who cares!3)Huet’s stock has gone up nicly in a N.h.l. with a good goalie shortage and we already have two very good up and comers in Price and Halak ,neither who I would like to see traded (AND with Halak rumored to be asking for a trade)whats a G.M. to do?Plus again new contract are in store for Huet and Ryder,so how much more are they asking???Anyone think less??? NOT I SAY’S ME.
December 30, 2007 at 8:03 pm
Maybe koivu’s out for locke???????????????????????????
December 30, 2007 at 8:35 pm
yep,Koivu is gone and Kovalev is wearing the C for today.
December 30, 2007 at 9:39 pm
It’s funny, Locke couldn’t make it to the game.lol
December 30, 2007 at 10:36 pm
WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPEND TO THE GAME????????????????????????????????????????????
December 30, 2007 at 10:39 pm
How do you spell an overtime or shoutout loss? HUET IN GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!
How do you can into a defensive style play for the entire 3rd period and expect to win????????????
The habs tried to protect ONLY A 1 GOAL LEAD and played NOT to lose, instead of trying to win! They just never learn their lesson. every time they try and protect a lead, THEY LOSE!
December 30, 2007 at 10:46 pm
The Habs and Huet can not and will not win no more than 2 games in a row for the rest of the year.
Habs Please prove me wrong……..I dare you…..
December 30, 2007 at 10:56 pm
Even though Shanahan was given a gift breakaway by Souray,I mean Hamerlicker, when nearing Huet…did Huet even move?Me thinks Huet’s getting tired again and I aways get that feeling when he looks like a picture of himself ,froozen in net with those deer in your headlite’s look.
December 30, 2007 at 11:33 pm
Relax all of the above. Hamerlicker? Souray? You’re actually gonna bash our best defenceman? As for Huet, not a great goal, but he’s our best goalie right now and the reason we just won tow in a row. Look at the shots against and hi #1 save % in the league. Stop acting like the sky os falling after every loss. 8pts outta 12 on the road is pretty effin good so chill out chicken littles.
December 30, 2007 at 11:51 pm
Dancan81,it wasn’t Ryder that cost us the game it was Hammer, and Huet fell apart and it’s not his first time.Huet is no Brodure or Loungo,he’s a little above average that it thats all,and did I mention he can be a REAL CHOKE ARTIST!
December 31, 2007 at 12:30 am
this was a good road outing. Probably didn’t cash in on some opportunities that they have in the Florida area. And unfortunate that Huet didn’t respond maybe he was caught off guard by his team leaving Shanahan all alone. I would have liked to see him challenge but what can we do?? The part that the team played not to lose really upsets me and like usual they do lose/collapse. So mine as well go for the throat and try to win the game handedly.
Contracts for both Kovalev & Ryder….I would think that they are better to trade them than to resign both. Are they here for any longer time?? Do they make a dent in the future plans? I can’t see that and will Gainey. This is the time for a blockbuster trade. Shop them now, if they haven’t already.
Still a good effort but can’t play this way against Detroit, Anaheim, New Jersey, Ottawa, San Jose…The intensity and finishing off of goal opportunities is their achilles heel. Let’s go!! Gotta pick it up!! Go Habs Go!
December 31, 2007 at 12:38 am
Bottom line: this team always tries to protect a lead, rather than be aggressive, and try to win. THEY CONSTANTLY TRY NOT TO LOSE, INSTEAD OF TRYING TO WIN! And that’s not something that comes with age or experience. It’s the coach’s fault! When you don’t play 60 minutes, you don’t win!
December 31, 2007 at 1:26 pm
as long as Gainey is GM here, don’t expect a trade of any magnitude – EVER!
December 31, 2007 at 2:46 pm
Nothing to do with Gainey habs2010. All to do with the tax rate in Mtl and the media, bottom line peeps dont want to play there.
December 31, 2007 at 4:13 pm
we can’t get UFA’s here, but there’s no reason why Gainey can’t make a trade!

I don’t know about a trade…when we’re playing well we’re really on fire and some of our young guys (Higgins, Latendress, at al) have some serious potential. Ryder is a liability right now but the past couple of games have been a bit better for him. Kovalev is the only real superstar we have right now, watching him puckhandle his way around the ice to make those great plays gives me heart.
Koivu was out tonight too; I saw we take our eight road points, hope for better then usual at home, and call it a day. We’ve got a few days to prep for Thursday’s game so we’ll see what happens.
January 2, 2008 at 12:01 am
Kovalev is having a good year, he has one every time his contract is due up,
the he slides back into oblivion.
I hope Bob doens’t fall for that, get rid of him while has some trade value.
January 2, 2008 at 12:45 am
To get something we have to have bait….that means Kovalev, Koivu, Halak & I wouldn’t necessarily go there but Huet in combination. Of course, this would mean we get something solid in return. What that is sits on Bob Gainey’s desk. I still say Marleau for Ryder or some combination. Include some stiffs (Smolinski, Brisebois, Dandenault, Bouillon) and strike the deal. Tampa’s ripe for the picking…goalie troubles and flimsy attack versus aggressive forchecking teams. Got to get in their face. Let’s go… Go Habs Go!!
January 2, 2008 at 8:51 am
Kovalev is still under contract for the 2008-2009 season. His contract has nothing to do with the way he is playing now.
January 2, 2008 at 6:45 pm
I’m all for a good stomping of Tampa tomorrow with a good show from some of our second and third liners. Throw in Huet with a top forward (Kovalev, Koivu, Higgins, Plekanec – take your pick) and we get Vinny
January 2, 2008 at 8:00 pm
This blog is making me pissed off,why would anybody want to trade a allstar goalie and one of our top guys for Vinny.Wake up guys it is not going to happen and nor should it happen.Price isnt ready yet and dont come back and say his performance in New york shows why we should get rid of him because even giguere kiprosoff and luongo even have there bad nights but the truth is he is a number goalie with top stats.
Ps Iam starting to think some of you guys have little shrines of vinny in your room, lit up with candles.
January 2, 2008 at 10:05 pm
Don’t get me wrong…having a big centre (Lecavalier) or anyone else for that matter is the missing piece. But it has to be someone with heart the likes of Beliveau, Howe, Hull, Esposito, Dornhoefer etc. These guys would not hesitate for the benefit of the team. Of the big guys around today, which would be available (the list gets smaller). Besides he fits the French issue and could become a superstar/legend status if he should ever lead the Habs to taste the Champagne off of Lord Stanley.
Thornton, Selanne, Datsuyk, Cammaleri (missed this one), Cole, E. Staal, Ovechkin, Crosby (either of the last two would be grand) could fit in….
how to make that happen is all another matter.
So nothing against shrines per say the Habs shrine but not until a player becomes a Hab does he get that attention from me.
Let’s go after Tampa….get those points now!!! Go Habs Go!!
January 2, 2008 at 10:20 pm
wow, I sort of agree with you, but I actually don’t think Tampa would trade Vinnie for Huet and one of our forwards, because that would be retarded. He is one of the top 5 players in the world. Huet is good, but he’s going to be a UFA. What needs to be debated is what type of trade its should be. What if the status quo remains and in a couple of months the Habs are among the large glut of teams separated by 6 points, are they buyers or sellers? To land a big name player it will have to be a package deal (we have youth on our side), or we sell off Kovalev, Hamrilik, and/or Ryder. What would you do?
January 3, 2008 at 1:56 am
With the D they have in Tampa Huet wouldn’t last a week!
