Carey Price under contract

  • Only days after missing the playoffs, the Canadiens are already changing the make up of their core signing goaltender Carey Price to a 3 year deal.

Price will join the Bulldogs and it’s a safe bet to assume David Abeischer will never dress as a Montreal Canadien again.

There was lots of speculation Price would be ready for the NHL next season and this is a step in that direction. But Does Price replace Halak up front or does he learn his way in the AHL for the time being?

Good job to get this guy signed. I would say Carey Price becomes the number 1 man in Hamilton and Jaro Halak becomes the new backup (or the number 1b goalie perhaps) Either way I agree with you HB I cannot see Abby ever wearing a Habs uni ever again nor can I see Samsonov back. Great job to lock up Price! He is the future. GO HABS GO

Before I write this comment, I will admit that THEO didn’t work out over the long term….however, the approach with his development was sound. Shelter him for a while in the minors, or as a backup, so he doesn’t crumble under the pressure of MTL.

I would like to seem him learn to be a pro for a while in the AHL. Ideal situation for me…..

    1) Sign Gigure(sp?) for 3-4 yrs
    2) Trade Huet, and a package of youngsters to TB for Vinny!! (might even need to deal the likes of Latendresse, higgens, perez, Yemilin etc).
    3) Saku would be an unreal #2 Centre, but he is not a #1 centre!!
    4) in 3-4 years Price will be ready to assume an NHL #1 role

Theodore didn’t work out for one reason and one reason only…..smaller equipment, thats when it started to go down hill.

Price will be nice to have when he’s ready

We have got rid of some star defense men I tell ya.

  7. Trade Huet , get a big ,young ,tough ,d man with a Howitzer and give him huets contract. Dont touch the young guys, jeeeze!!! Flurey has developed into a great goalie from just playing in the N.H.L. at Pitts,Halak and Price will do just fine with a big, killer defence !!!If Vinny or whom ever wants in fine, but leave your ego at your House or save it for the other team!

Ryder and Koviu did their part, everybody else did nothing. That Carlo Colaiacovo left with an ankle injury and came back. Souray leaves with an “upper body injury??!!”whats that??? It really didn’t look that bad, and he never came back….he bailed out when they could’ve really used him…..the last 5-on-3 they had in the game has 0 shots on net…..0

To sum this up, even though Toronto is out to…..which I am glad, at
least they showed they wanted to win the game….I new putting Huet in
was a bad mistake, he was rusty as hell…..just awful goals he let in.
    They should have won 5-3.

After Souray’s bail-out…he can just bail out of town too. When you think of guys like Ryan Smythe playing all busted up, ot Bobby Orr playing with no knees to speak of, Souray leaves with a skate tap…..Holy fuck, whats going on, oh! I know, its just for the paycheck, the paycheck

This is fantastic for the future of the Habs. Now they need to get Emelin and Valentenko over here. If they have to Malkin them out(very Tom Clancy like) then do it.

The Habs will pick 12 in the draft. I’m hoping for Brendan Sutter. He’s got fantastic hockey lineage, he’s got tons of grit and heart and is loaded with skill. A more talented version on Kyle Chipchura.

And Koivu’s getting pissed with management:

CANADIAN PRESS: Bill Beacon reports both Sheldon Souray and Andrei Markov hope to re-sign with the Montreal Canadiens. Both are eligible for UFA status but they’ve indicated they wish to give the club opportunities to re-sign them prior to July 1. Disgruntled forward Sergei Samsonov is expected to be bought out of his contract which has another year at $3.75 million remaining. Forward Alex Kovalev said he hoped to return with the Habs next season but rejected the notion that his poor stats this season meant he let the team down this season. Team captain Saku Koivu said he doesn’t want out of Montreal but hinted that he may be getting impatient waiting for this team to improve. “”I don’t want to be part of a team that’s going to rebuild and rebuild and not make the playoffs again. Hopefully, we can compete against the best and have a chance to win.”

Spector’s Note: If Souray and Markov both want to return Habs management should do all it can (within financial reason, of course) to retain them. Samsonov will be bought out, and I believe the Canadiens should bite the bullet with Kovalev and buy him out, too. As for Koivu, it’s sickening to read comments from Montreal fans and some pundits who want him traded or suggest he’s not leading the team. This guy plays his heart out in every game, as his stats indicate. He’s never whined about his situation, never demanded a trade, never staged a contract holdout and never demanded more than his worth. It’s not his fault that the depth around him during his career hasn’t been good. He’s doing all he can, plays through pain (which accounts for his offensive drought back in February), including with an eye still damaged since last spring, and makes his linemates better. Trading him away is a stupid idea and those who suggest he’s not a real leader or a good player obviously do not know what they’re talking about.

    That was from Spectors rumors.

    And from Habs inside out:

Canadiens president Pierre Boivin, in an interview with Bertrand Raymond of Le Journal de Montréal, says the club has the financial means to pursue an established NHL superstar, and intends to hunt one down this off-season.

Boivin told Raymond that before the lockout of 2004-05, the Canadiens didn’t plunge into the big-money free-agent pool because the team’s finances weren’t solid enough.

But Boivin says now that Montreal has the means to acquire a top-flight player, and a few others who will permit the team to beef up its talent, experience, leadership and character.

The Canadiens boss did, however, speak of a few unique obstacles the team faces: taxes that are higher in Montreal than in any other NHL city, and Bill 101, the Quebec language law that insists that an incoming player’s children must be educated in a French school.

    Some food for thought.

Let me get this straight…Money problems? The Habs have the largest arena in the NHL, with at least 2000 more seats than most other teams, and even more than that over the likes of NYI, and some of the older arenas. They had their 100th consecutive home sellout, and tied their own attendance record (set last season). And it’s not like the ticket prices are that low. I think they’re top ten.

I know a few years back, the Habs paid more taxes on their arena than all 24 American teams combined, and that’s probably still true.

That’s irrelevant in the salary capped world, however, as all teams are on a level playing field. It’s great that teams like Detroit, Toronto and NYR simply can’t buy their teams anymore. So I’ve heard enough money excuses here. If they’re so poor, why buy out Samsonov?

Even pro-rated @ $1.2 mil over 2 years, it doesn’t seem like much. But that 1.2 mil could cost us a deadline deal, or key UFA, or make a trade that would otherwise be possible be a moot point. Besides, the heartless quitting puke has been angling for a buyout for half of the season, and I say, and have said (over and over and over to any who would listen, and a few who wouldn’t) DON’T DO IT!!!!!

The Habs have an owner with some pretty deep pockets: he’s also a new part owner of Liverpool now. So enough monetary excuses. I’m sure Gilette doesn’t think Sergei’s worth $5.833333 million either. Loan him to an ECHL team if they feel he’ll be a farm team cancer, assuming (no doubt rightly) that no other team will take him in a trade.

I say keep Price around at training camp, but play him in the AHL next season. We still have Yann Danis as well, don’t forget. A year of seasoning isn’t going to kill the kid, he’ll only be more prepared the season after.

Unless he blows us away in camp, and then all bets are off.

Briere will be a guy they covet, but if I’m Darcy Regier, I sign Briere before Drury. I don’t know all the UFAs as of this moment, so I’ve little informed advice there. If Koivu wants to go that badly, bye bye. Just hope that this public outburst of his doesn’t have us dealing from a position of weakness: I’d like to see fair market value for him at least.

    That’s my 2 cents, for now…

Price, 19, completed the 2006-07 season with a record of 30 wins, 13 losses and one overtime loss, a 2.45 goals against average, a .917 save percentage and three shutouts in 46 games with the Tri-City Americans in the Western Hockey League. His performances helped his team finish in second place in the U.S. Division of the Western Conference with 47 wins and 96 points, two franchise records.

In a little more than four full seasons in Tri-City, Price posted an overall record of 83 wins, 78 losses and 18 overtime losses in 193 games, with a 2.53 goals against average and a .906 save percentage. He also recorded 15 shutouts.

According to his overall stats. pice is just average.

    This year was good though………..

Don’t forget that Gainey does not love rookies for the same reason that Kovalev doesn’t love them either, rookies have always made the vets look like they don’t deserve the big bucks. Chances are that Gainey will never call up Price until too late in the season like he did to Halak and then put Huet in again to let in floater shots after Dandenault and Bouillon work against their own goalie…typical Dandenault…

  16. #16 Joshtm says:
    April 10, 2007 at 4:15 pm

Abby will never dress again? More like Halak will never dress again you mean, knowing Gainey and the way Gainey disrespects rookies! Next year more of the same. Huet and Abby working with Dandenault and Bouillon to make sure the habs lose, with help from Koivu’s hooking penalties, Begins slashes and Kovalev’s prima donna hissy fits! No room for rookies though that like to win!

  17. #17 Joshtm says:
    April 10, 2007 at 4:34 pm

Isn’t it sad if we lose Souray because Gainey gives Dandenault and Bouillon a raise? Why are underperformers like that given more pay and ice time than the real hockey players like Pleks and the rookies?

  18. The signing of Carey Price is gerat news for us Montreal fans who want an elite #1 goaltender and someone who will push Halak and Huet next season. Abbyshit will NEVER PLAY FOR MONTREAL AGAIN!! GOOD RIDDANCE TO BAD RUBBISH and ABBY, DON’T LET THE DOOR HIT YOU IN THE ASS ON THE WAY OUT, YOU PIECE OF SHIT!! He was the reason we lost those games when Huet went down, he let in soft goals and for that, he deserves the blame. Go home to Switzerland and eat some Swiss Cheese because that is what you are in net, moron. I don’t think there is a Habs fan out there who likes Abbyshit and who would after the way he played this season. At least we got rid of Theodore’s bloated contract and out that on Colorado but he was a major bust. Players who I think should never play for Montreal again: Samsonov, Abbyshit, Ninny, Dandenault. I think we should try and get a top-flight player who can play with Kovalev and see how Kovalev does. However, Samsonov is NOT COMING BACK and don’t get me started on that piece of garbage because I hate him more than Abbyshit. He disgraced the CH and what is stands for and all the great players that have ever played for the Habs. He brought dishonour to the uniform and should be tarred and feathered on Ste. Catherine Street. Kovalev is another player who knows nothing about the history of the Canadiens. Maurice “Rocket” Richard must be rolling over in his grave when he sees these guys who show no heart and no passion. Montreal has the WRONG players on the team and they need a major overhaul. Getting Price is a step in the right direction and maybe they can bring Chipchura up as well because he is a gritty-two way player and someone who shows HEART. I am like a lot of other people on this site who are true Habs fans who get really pissed off when they don’t show any heart or desire. We want players who would like to play for the Habs, not players who just care about the money. We need players who can bring the winning tradition that is only surpassed by one professional sports franchise(New York Yankees) back to Montreal. Let’s bring #25 home in the next 2-3 years!

  19. why nest 2-3 years?????

Ahhhh you meant next year! Good job!

From the conference today, re Gainey and Carbo to the media, here is what I have taken out of the Q and A: Samsonov, Abbyshit, Ninnimaa, Downey are gone.
I believe strongly that Bonk won’t be back(due to his high salary).
Gainey will do his best to resign Markov and Souray. I think either Bouillon or Dandenault are gone. they may try and trade Huet, due to our abundance of goalies,ie. Halak, Price, Danis. Unless Koivu opts out,( because he feels we’re still in a rebuilding process, and not ready to contend for the cup), he should be back. I think players like Grabovski and Chipchura wil be given an opportunity to make the team. I doubt Johnson will return, as he is concerned with this team being a genuine contender, and of course over financial reasons.
The big question mark is Kovalev? What can we do? I hope they do their damnest to try and trade him, or package him in some kind of deal. He must NOT return, at all costs! We wil NOT make the playoffs if he’s still around. His cancerous attitude will again infiltrate and raise havoc and negativity amongst all the younger players. Gainey will do his best to go after 1 or 2 proven goal scorers.
Good luck Bob! You’ll need it!

  21. In the Rivet article about his experinces with the Sharks, first bonus points brought up was the fact they got a big team. That’s what the Habs have got too do,BEEF UP,NO MORE SMALL PLAYERS. We need Big, Strong, Fast,Talented,Agressive,Fighters…Who hate losing. If you want Briere”small player” he must replace a small player “koivu?” And no more trying to find someone to play with Kovalev, send him to Detroit or Washington !Bon Soir Huet et Abbyshit !!!!

After reading some of Gainey’s comments I wouldn’t be suprised if one of the goalies got dealt this offseason, maybe even Huet.

And even though the Lightning need a goalie, please no one start up those stupid Vinny Lecavelier to Montreal rumors again. Tampa is not going to trade a 52 goal scorer and 100 point guy in his prime, it would take Mike Milbury to do that.

Here’s one for you. All the French speaking players, who are married to French girls, are proud to speak in their mother tongue. Where are they going to send their kids to school? in Quebec…

  25. Nice to know our G.M. and Coach and Fans are finally close to being on the same page. Cudo’s to Bob Gainey for underlining the fact how important the Fans are in all of this, and cudos to Koivu for wanting a winner”show’s emotion,eh!” Man ,I’d kill to hear Bob and Kovalev AT THE ROUND TABLE. I think Kovalev will stay and we will see a real superstar soon in Montreal someone that can enhance skills of guys like Kovalev , he can skate and handle the puck better than most anyone in the league , he has ups and downs granted but I think he will stay , he has 2 years left anyways, I am pretty sure we will see some great things from this team in the next couple of years.

Souray may want to stay? Let em go, get a “D-man”

Markov may want out, may as well….go to contender

I dont see the Habs as a problem , it was said yesterday by the head honcho’s, they have a plan, and makes sence that they felt they needed to patch holes waiting for the young core to become ready, well the core is ready, now they can build around that young core, I tend to look at the half full glass not the half empty .

  31. #32 fan4066 says:

I see it this way. Habs fans are getting tired of poor coaching and management decisions (ie: Huet in net Saturday night). Have a look at other organizations, they are doing the right things, making good decisions, carefully selecting. Gainey said he’s not gonna trade the farm for free agency. Wake up Gainey, this is the new NHL, teams ARE doing this, and yes, you may have to give up some young talent, 29 other teams are doing it too! There is a salary cap now. You have to uase ALL your tools.

Montreal never seems to get their shit together enuff to ice a highly competitive team anymore, this in conjunction with “no-one wanting to play there anymore” from the free agent market. HHmmm, Montreal or Detroit????
“I think I’ll play in Detroit”, not as much pressure there, taxes are cheaper too!!

There is always going to be the “I hope I made the right decision” factor. But if he is waiting for all the Bulldogs to come of age….aint gonna happen, this is the real world of hockey. This is why we have FREE AGENCY and farm systems. They are tools to make your franchise better. Gainey only wants to use the farm it seems, and thats it, as he said during the trade deadline. thats like saying I’m only gonna use a hammer to build my house, and not a saw.

I know they say they’re looking to a big UFA like Briere, Drury and so on. These guys get to Montreal and never produce like elsewhere, due to the fact of defensive hockey….refer to Recchi, soon as he left, he was scoring as usual with Philly again.

So it’s not gonna matter who they bring to help. They need to rid themselves of the cancer, Souray, Samanov, Kovalev, etc.

As long as Gainey puts his faith in Dandenault and Bouillon, we will never win!

    Ryder – Higgins – Kostitsyn
    Latendresse – Plekanec – Grabovsky
    Begin – Lapierre – Milroy

    Komisarek – Markov
    Streit – Emelin
    Gorges – Dandenault

It hurts me to say it, but bouillon will be traded, probably in a deal with perezhogin in the draft. Emelin is a komisarek type player. He will add grit to the D-core. Dandenault will be back along with streit, komisarek, markov and gorges. Souray BETER NOT BE SIGNED!.he is overrated. Shanahan, if he isnt signed by NY will definitely be a hab. He almost was last year.

Now show the door to Kovalev, Koivu (unless we get a No.1 center), Dandeneault, Bonk (unless he will take a pay cut), Samsonov & Perezhogin (essentially, any forward who skates in circles until he loses the puck), Downie, Ninamaa, Huet (too many goalies just as good. That should keep bob busy!

Ok, Lecavalier is untouchable, what about Jokinen, Florida needs a goalie.
