Desert Dogs

  • The Canadiens are in Phoenix tonight, game 2 of their 4 game visit out west.

On paper the next two games should be the easiest chances to win, before finishing up the road trip in Anaheim. The Habs definitely need to secure these points to stay in the hunt for 1st in their Division and Conference.

Carey Price gets the call again after a less than strong performance in San Jose. Price is the #1 now and will only learn from being thrown right back into the mix. Sending him right back is probably the right move to build his Confidence.

However, when will Halak get his feet wet? Starting him on the road, against the worst team in the league would be the absolute least pressure situation for his 1st start. Win or lose tonight, Halak should start in Los Angeles.

The Coyotes are still in the Western playoff hunt and will come out hungry. The stats however favor Montreal – the Coyotes will be trying for their first win against Montreal in nearly a decade. The last time the Coyotes beat the Habs was Dec. 9, 1998.

The Habs will probably finish the season as either the 1st or 2nd highest scoring team, should Gainey get Vincent Lecavalier in the off season there will be no holding them back in 2008/09.

While Ovechkin largely had to create his own offensive magic for two-plus seasons, he is now getting quite a bit of help from emerging rookie playmaker Nicklas Backstrom.

The young Swede leads all NHL rookies with 56 points and has two goals and 25 assists in his last 22 games.

With a combined age of 42, it’s not hard to imagine the pair teaming up for years. Who knows — if they stay healthy, they could rival the great passer-sniper combos in modern history, pairs such as Mike Bossy-Bryan Trottier, Teemu Selanne-Paul Kariya, and Brett Hull-Adam Oates.

If Washington makes the playoffs..its lights out whoever gets in their way!

    PLAYER GAMES GOALS GPG

    Mike Bossy 228 173 .758
    Pavel Bure 224 154 .687
    Wayne Gretzky 239 198 .828
    Gretzky (WHA) 239 152 .638
    Brett Hull 228 146 .640
    Mario Lemieux 215 145 .674
    Joe Nieuwendyk 240 152 .633
    Alex Ovechkin 231 152 .658
    Teemu Selanne 180 123 .683

Ovechkin will probably have tallied more goals than Bure but will fall short of goals per game…this is serious stuff folks!

Thats what Price needed….to steal one for us…get the confidence back up. Severely outshot and a couple of PP’s in the third is what gave us the W. It was late in the 2nd period before our guys got off the golf courses down in Pho. from soaking up the rays. But we got the 2 pts. with good goaltending and a still effective PP….so no complaints here. Just watch out for these warm-climate road trips…we seem not to bring our A-game…I think they see it as a mini-vacation. Nevertheless, this win combined with Pitt and Ott losses is great stuff…well done !!

Gotta ask this…..did any of you fellow Habs faithful watch the game on english TV last night? I watched on Centre Ice and these Western announcers think the east is a total joke……maybe its the horrible east vs. west records this year for eastern teams or the fact that apparently Chicago is the only western team with a losing record against the east this year. But these guys don’t watch eastern hockey played against each other and their comments were over the edge. One guy actually said thats there’s at least 6 teams (didnt say which ones) in the west better than ANY team in the east. I just thought it was a ridiculously stupid comment and wanted to share it with you guys on here to get your reactions.

Anyway, lets show up strong against LA….like Ott didn’t and start putting a strangle hold on top spot in the division anyway. We’re being handed the conch…all we gotta do is show up every game and take it. GO HABS GO !!!

Mini-vacation is right! but to be honest, wouldn’t you?

Price’s racoon eyes from wearing shades and getting a sunburn was hilarious (especially after being lit up by SJ) but I can’t find a picture of it anywhere…only saw it on TSN..

Anyone seen a picture of this? link? thanks~

You said it Ice….I’ve been trying for the life of me to pick out 6 teams from the West that are better than ANY team from the East….can’t be done. Thats these American announcers who have only been somewhat following hockey for the last 5 or 6 years because that where they got work….and now think they’re experts on the subject. Stick to golf and baseball morons….slow games that that Yanks exceed at…leave hockey to us.

  24. #24 Ice Man says:

That’s right Donnie. Hockey is “Our” game “A Canadian Game” OR should I say
    “A Canadien Game”.

The sad part of it all Donnie, is that Our game of Hockey is being slowly changed to suit the American’s.

  25. #25 MrBigTime says:
    March 7, 2008 at 3:50 pm

Because the USA is where all of the TV ad $$$ are… but to be fair to Bettman (I wouldn’t want his job, would you wanne be responsible for screwing up the NHL?); he’s done a pretty good job up until now… if the nets get bigger though, I’ll stop following the NHL, that would be a joke… I totally agree with Luongo on that… it’s just not hockey as we know it

  26. #26 Ice Man says:
    March 7, 2008 at 3:54 pm

The game was fine the way it was. Leave enough alone.

Go back to the 70′s format. Win, Loss & tie. The top 16 teams make the playoffs. None of this team making the playoffs with less point than someone else.

What is he trying to prove that he is a Nut Job. He has done that already.

  27. #27 MrBigTime says:
    March 7, 2008 at 4:23 pm

I dunno, maybe he has been good for the game… the only reason the NHL still exists in so many markets today is because of the changes he made.. SH@t was hitting the fan (Ottawa, Buffalo, all small american teams) before the lockout… which was horrible, but I really enjoy today’s NHL (minus the extremely weak holding and hooking calls)…

You have to admit, the cap system, and the shootout, and the draft lottery (all Bettman) have been pretty good moves… makes the game harder to take advantage of… but guys like Brian Burke will always find a way around the rules (basically sitting Selanne & Niedermayer in order to make cap)… Gainey is one of the only TRUE GM’s who believe in a u-make-it type of team..

    Just being devil’s advocate here…

  28. is plek really ok??????????

Yeah your so right “iceman’ we are slowly being “brainwashed ” into going to “subway’ or “Wendys’ and watch American made movies and listen to “hood’ rap;;it makes us “FAT” and “LAZY” . and we become just like them..CONTRADICTING and JUDGING everyone to make ourselves look better..but don’t make the effort to see what it is like to WORK for the respect we deserve!
    Well said comrade!

I live out west and I don’t think I can name six teams that are better than any team in the East. I can however name 6 teams in the west that can grind, punish and outplay any team in the east over a 7 game series. Anaheim, San Jose, Dallas, Detroit, Calgary and Minnesota. Trust me, the east has speed and scoring hence exciting hockey but the west will run you down over several games with their style of play. It’s very comparable to the WHL vs the QMJHL. Scoring vs trapping/grinding. Size does matter.

PS. I’m not saying we can’t beat anyone of those teams. I’m saying we’ll take a beating physically.

  33. Duncan81,you are bang on,but I think the Sens and leafs could handle it,if they make the big show, lol.

like the Florida swing, the west swing always seems to bring the worst out in our team. Hopefully, we can bring out A game today, maybe an afternoon game will be better since we will not have the time to get out in the Sun. I probably will be a good game to start Halak it should make our team focus better with a different goalie in the nets.
