Gainey seeks #1 Defenseman

  • After the Canadiens most recent loss in which they were nothing short of mocked by Senators goaltender Dominik Hasek, the normally tight-lipped Bob Gainey announced he’s on the market for a reliable top tier NHL defenseman.

There’s been rampant trade speculation over the past couple months but this is the first time Gainey announced he is in fact looking and what he’s specifically seeking. The most popular rumor involves Adrian Aucoin of Chicago coming to Montreal. Of course it is all speculation and it could just as easily be Mattias Ohlund, Sami Salo or Patrice Brisebois. Ok maybe not Breezer. Maybe the Canadiens should call up Dave Manson or Igor Ulanov again. I heard Eric Weinrich and his yellow visor are available at a bargain deal.

If the Canadiens do make a change you can bet Bob Gainey won’t repeat those mistakes with those type of players. If it happens it will be for an impact player and will most certainly involve one or more of our ‘top’ players. It’s safe to say that no one is safe anymore. That includes Saku Koivu, Jose Theodore and everyone else.

Where is Koivu’s leadership? A Captain is supposed to do something in situations like this and it’s fair to say he hasn’t. Koivu’s contract is up at the end of this season and his market value is still decent.

It’d be a shame to give up Michael Ryder as he is the one bright spot in the roster – he’d be the one player off limits. Andrei Markov’s not going anywhere either. Sheldon Souray is on the borderline, I think Gainey believes in him and in a #2 or #3 defenseman’s role he could be very good. Swapping Souray for another D wouldn’t make much sense unless it was a straight 1-1 deal. That leaves Komisarek as potential trade bait.

Which team will show up? A hungry team frustrated and ready to leap frog over the Leafs with a win or the lazy bunch of floaters. Huet or Theo? If Theo is part of a trade package he’s gonna have to get some ice time first. Theo’s a terrible goalie at the Air Canada Centre, Huet would be the better choice considering the importance of the game.

After tonight the Canadiens will find themselves back in the playoffs or slumping worse than ever.

after watching the comments of the lame old dominator i have lost my respect for the senators organization. who the hell do they think they are? every year they seem to be a “cup contender” but end up getting their own feet stuck in their mouths. this season is far from over and already they are talking like they are the kings of the nhl. just because you can beat the leafs doesn’t mean squat…there’s more to life outside of ontario.

number one defenceman: i don’t think a number one defenceman will change this team, unless it involves the gutless ribs gettin on a plane with one way ticket out of this town. a number one defenceman won’t help out our 12 shot performance against the sens…this is supposed to be a proffesional hockey team, time to play like one.

  2. I think Theo will get the start.. it’s do or die for him anyway. The game could go either way. Then again, it’s a Leafs Habs match-up. Will they stink everyone out? Will it be 2 strung-out street corner hoes beating each other over the head with a purse full o’ pucks? Or will the victor find their confidence once again in a pivitol game? Who knows… guess it’ll be interesting to see how 2 struggling rivals collide under the media microscope.

A good offense starts with a good defence ie. Ottawa,Calgary. I believe the biggest weakness on the habs is their lack of depth on the blueline. Just look at how they have played when Markov is not in the lineup. He is their only world class player on the backline, and if they could add somebody even remotely close to his talent it would definitely stabilize the rest of the team to a certain degree. Go for it Bob! Try and get that #1 defenceman, and dont be afraid to give up anyone (except the kids). This would be a good place to start building this team into a contender for the future!

we won against the leafs, but we didn’t make the play offs yet, keep on winning all the games, especially the easy ones. We won before against Ottawa, but we need to win more. play off is reachable, so, keep in doing the good job.
    GO HABS GO.

  12. Ribeiro, Zednik and Bonk are spineless pukes who don’t deserve to be playing in the great Red, white and blue. Kovalev, as talented as he is, seems to leave his heart in the dressing room every game, after his knee surgery cause he’s probably saving himself for the Olympics. Why? Because Russians are emotionless mercenary’s who don’t care about anything but money and their home country. Theodore should probably be spending less time with his numerous girlfriends, bikergang buddies and doing endorsement deals and just concentrate on hockey for once. I’m sorry to say this but after tonight’s debacle against Boston it’s painfully obvious that Gainey’s defensive strategy isn’t working, the team has no pride, Koivu won’t lead without a fat new contract his injury plagued ass dosen’t deserve(we’d be better off with Jokienen or Richards at the number one centre position) and that Gainey has givin up on this season and hopefully he will clean house and reform this disaster of a team for next year. Oh, by the way Bob, Mike Komisarek, BUST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
