Game 4: Habs/Sabres

  • It was 40 years ago tonight that the Canadiens played the Buffalo Sabres in the first home opener in that club’s  history.  Since that night the Habs and Sabres have had many memorable matchups despite the fact that Buffalo has yet to win the Stanley Cup. The “French Connection” line of the 1970s featured hall of Famer Gilbert Perrault who was drafted by the Sabres in 1970 – the first year in which the Canadiens did not have priority rights to Quebec-born junior players. Perrault was joined by Richard Martin and Rene Robert to become one of the most exciting lines in Sabres history – one which also delighted Canadiens fans who felt a “connection” to the Sabres’ Quebec born stars.
