Gorges extended for 6 years.

  • Josh Gorges will be a Montreal Canadien for a long time to come. He was extended today for 6 years in a move that Pierre Gauthier made in order to not lose the 26 year old at the end of the season to free agency. Gorges will earn an average of $3.9M for each of the next six seasons. As one of the critical young players in the organization that Gauthier can trust, Gorges’ signing indicates that Montreal will not stick to the previously adhered to policy of not negotiating contracts during the season. Carey Price and PK Subban will be two of the other important signings Gauthier will need to deal with before the beginning of next season.

It may also signal that Gionta will be put out there as trade bait and Gorges being the new team captain? It could be the sign of the teaming looking to the future instead of the present too.

The habs could be close to writing off the season, the next two weeks could be the telling tale which way we are going short term and long term.

Price definitely needs to be nailed down to at least 5 years. PK can wait another year as he is still RFA, and to me he has to prove that he can play a displined game before I give him a long term contract.

Gorges was born in Kelowna, probably doesn’t speak a word of french, so I doubt seriously he’ll be in line to be the next captain. Can you imagine, an anglo coach and an anglo captain, the Quebec media would have an apoplexy.

He’s been in Montreal for a while now. I have no outside knowledge of his French capabilities, but it wouldn’t be any different from our current Anglo-Coach – Anglo-Captain situation.
