There are few nights at the Centre Bell where the intensity and excitement are as high as when the Leafs come to town. There’s nothing quite like ‘welcoming’ the Leafs to Montreal and nothing feels better then sending them on their way again with a BIG L and another wrinkle on Pat Quinn’s giant eskimo-like head.
Tonight the Canadiens hope to do that. The teams have split the first 2 games and the Canadiens presently hold an 8 point lead over the Buds. The Leafs come to town after taking a 5-2 loss to the Sabres last night and the Canadiens had a day off after losing in their first shoot out in team history.
Sheldon Souray’s foot is apparently swollen and bruised from his heel throughout his calf after blocking a Penguins shot. He will be questionable to start as will Jan Bulis who is nursing an injured shoulder.
With Jose Theodore starting to settle down in goal and Claude Julien giving his team hell for playing 20 minutes as opposed to 60, I would expect the Canadiens to come out harder than normal. You can never predict a Habs/Leafs match up. If the Canadiens hope to win they’ll have to show off their speed and skill all game for the whole Country to see on Hockey Night in Canada.
You can bet that the whole country definitely has their eyes on the Habs. The tide is turning for Canadian hockey fans, a life long Leafs fan e-mailed me and asked me how much a Habs jersey costs because he is ‘switching teams’. I wonder how he’ll make it through tonights game.
Let’s also be on Harry Neale watch tonight. Let’s see how many goals on Ed Belfour are ‘screened from point’ or ‘must have been redirected in front’ or how many mispronounciations, general errors and weak commentary we will get.
