Habs / Bruins: Game 2
-
Game 1 of the series went pretty much according to the script.
Tim Thomas was beaten early and easily and the Bruins still can’t score goals.
Perhaps the only surprises were the Canadiens being the far more physical of the two teams and maybe some unexpected goal scoring from Tom Kostopolous and Bryan Smolinski.
What changes will Claude Julien make to avoid Boston’s 13th consecutive loss against the Canadiens?
What can he do?
The Bruins have yet to even have a one goal lead this season against Montreal. Short of a Tim Thomas miracle, there’s no reason to believe game 2 won’t unfold the same way as the previous 12.

- Senet1 : So we could pick anywhere from 25th to 23rd depending on who wins these quarter final series.
- Senet1 : First, is the 14 teams in the lottery. Then there are 12 teams that did not make the semi finals in the order of the seasonal finish, Then there are the four teams in the semi final the first two eliminated pick in the order of the regular season points total and the last two based on who wins and who loses the cup. So as it stand now if say Detroit beats Chicago then Detroit moves up to pick after us. Boston or NYR will move up and pick after us. LA or San Jose will move up and pick after us
- Senet1 : Basically, I was wrong about the draft pick situation. There are three groups of drafting teams within the 30 teams.
- Senet1 : seriously ready to challenge for the cup. He will us win games but he will not be the difference between winning the cup and not winning the cup. You pick up players like that once you have the team ready to challenge,.
- Senet1 : I am looking at the players to draft and there are a lot of big 6'3-6'5 forwards available ion the draft this year. If we could draft 3-4 big young players in the 2nd and 3rd round why would you want to give that up for a roster player who may have 2-3 years at best. If we are going to build a winner to have to build it with bigger players and there are a lot of good big players available this year. So you sign Ott and he is with us for the short run, but probably not when we are seriously re
- Senet1 : Boullion is a great mentor for the young D-men
- muller93 : Boullion is one of MBs great additions--Boull ion is a definite Keeper.
- muller93 : Getting rid of Kaberle frees up a lot of cash. Boullion is small but is reliable and doesn't back down from anyone.
- muller93 : Exactly Goalie any thoughts on a punishing D-man?
- goalie : They;re showing determination adn skill vs Ducks and Blackhawks.
- goalie : REd Wings could turn out to be the surprise team of this year's playoffs!
- goalie : WE need to rid our team of Kaberle and Webber. Step two would be to then move Diaz. If we get that big d-man I believe that would push Boullion to # 7 on the chart. We'd then go with Georges, PK,Markov (to continue mentoring Ememlin) Tinordi as our starting six . THEN I'd be excited about our chances. We could then work on getting bigger forwards.
- goalie : I too would gladly give up a 3rd round pick for Ott- the type of player we sadly lack. AND if we could get one more rugged, expeienced defenceman it would help immensely.
- muller93 : Senet what you are saying makes sense but if we can get Ott for a 3rd round I'll take that all day.
- muller93 : MB should be looking at a big D-man first, even though I like our blue line with the addition of Tinordi. We need that insurance just in case one gets injured. Also I'm a firm believer in starting with the goalie first then-defense-for wards-and we already have good goalie. We have all noticed when we have the lead Price is tough to beat.
- Senet1 : So sometimes you have to sacrifice for one year or two to build that team in the draft. then add the finishing touches through FA and trades.
- Senet1 : Muller, Detroit is another good example. They have been in the hunt every year with good well balanced teams yet only one or two cups to show for it. However, they have built a team that has a chance every years for the last 10+ years. That is what I think we have a chance to do this year with a good draft. It reminds me of the habs teams of the mid 80 and 90's we built a team then with sold draft picks and won the cup twice during that time period. So sometimes you have to sacrifice a one
- muller93 : Very true Senet, you do need luck and we haven't had any luck it seems since the habs moved to the Bell Center. We had an incredible run in 2010 with some crazy goal tending from Halak. With Galchenyuk-Tinor di-Gallagher all in 1 year--not too bad, even with an early exit in the playoffs.
- Senet1 : Muller I guess we all have our own ideas, but there has never been too many times that were successful when they traded their draft picks away. We have a chance to build this team so we have a shot at winning the cup over the next 10 years. Even as good as Pittsburgh has been they have only won the cup once since Crosby and Malkin have been with the team. That is because you not only need great players but you need luck to win, but one thing about Pittsburgh they have a chance every year. The
- muller93 : Good point on Torres, he might be a liability. Torres has to tone it down a bit, but that's his game-very aggressive.
- goalie : Though I don't condone what Raffi Torres did - thos shows you how repeat offenders or near offenders are going to be treated. His hit was NOT illegal BUT what the rap sheet adn reputation Torres has he got severly punished. Lesson to be learned by OTHER players because Torres dopesn't learn fromk his mistakes.
- muller93 : Senet normally I would agree with you on not trading draft picks but we are not in a rebuilding stage. Sometimes draft picks can be a roll of the dice and it can take up to 3 years to be NHL ready. We have a good team and I agree with Stuo players like Clowe-Torres-Ott -Scott will make a big difference. Somebody has to protect Gallagher, he can't keep getting hit the way does--we need a tough forward so they think twice before going after Gallagher.
- Senet1 : Really a heathly Habs team would probably win more games against the Pens that we did against the Sens. Reason they Pens would not play as physical against us as against the Sens. If we get good goaltending we win at least two games.
- zpezada4ok : hello all «link»
- stuo11 : hes a tougher big guy too! Just a minor adjustment but will help a bit
- stuo11 : hes better than markov, and hes french who was in mention for defenceman of the year
- goalie : Markov for Beauchemin - an injury prone d-man for an ;old timer'd-man. Beauchemin is NOT what the Habs need in my opinion. He is a HUGE defensive liability.
- goalie : Stuo 11 I'd make that trade with Oilers fast BUT I doubt the Oilers will make that. Two marginal d-men at the best for a switch of first round picks - not a chance .
- stuo11 : markov for beachemin?
- stuo11 : let moen go
- stuo11 : maybe try and get steve begin back
- stuo11 : we wouldve kicked out all other teams but pens, sens,
- stuo11 : pens have alot of forwaRDS same with us but we have better goaltending
- stuo11 : theres styles of play goalie. Sens played us good, but lost games to southeast teams florida and tampa and get crushed by leafs EVERYTIME. sens and leafsd cant beat bruins but we do frequently
- stuo11 : Diaz weber and our 1st for their first edm

Kovy know it was a selfish penalty and has said so .. he learned soemthing the whole team did , thank the hockey gods for the win, I think the ghosts have finally found their way to the Bell Center !!
April 12, 2008 at 10:19 pm
“Joseph, I agree and understand what you were saying, I do think that if we lost tonight it could have changed the momentum of the series, and we would have had a much harder time winning the series. Let’s face it if we win the series could be over in 4 or 5 but if we loose it could go 7. I also agree that these guys should be self motivated to show up in the playoff. To me this was a wake up call to the team, Boston is not going to roll over and let us win this series. we better go back to the original game plan, skate, hit and check , something we did not do too much tonight. I still have faith.”
I haven’t abandoned my faith. I just feel that I wasn’t watching a potential Stamley Cup champion on the ice tonight. I think that most would agree. They’ll have to be a lot better to achieve that goal.
April 12, 2008 at 10:19 pm
I agree, Price was very good and he is gaining the experience he is going to need as the playoffs progress. I am amazed that a 20 year old is as good as he is and as confident. We all know he is going to make some mistakes but I like the way he plays goal and I like the way he handles the puck.
I watch the Philly / Caps games last night and Philly took advantage of Huet handling the puck for a while but then they stopped forechecking late int he game and without the forecheck Huet can’t make any mistakes with the puck. Philly had that game won and stopped skating and forecheck, remind you of any othe team we know.
April 12, 2008 at 10:21 pm
Yo Don Cherry, you are a whinning ************ lately AND IF YOU LIKE A TEAM YOUR THE KISS OF DEATH TO EM,LOL…….
April 12, 2008 at 10:25 pm
Joseph, I have said all along that this team was being built for next year, the fact that it matured a year early is great because it gives us that experience that we will need for future playoff years. I all get overly excited when we see our team play so good one night and then we come back down to earth the next night when we realize that maybe they just are ready yet to win it all. I am not saying that they can’t go all the way but your points are well taken in that they have to learn consistency if they are going to win it all.
April 12, 2008 at 10:25 pm
Yeah, I watched that game too. And I think that that’s what set alarm bells off in my head tonight. I strongly feel that the Habs are a much better team than they show at times, and it’s those times when they fall short that might end up costing them. I’m kind of pissed that they seemed to take the win for granted in the third period tonight.
And Price is amazing. He’s the reason I didn’t have a full blown panic attack after Boston tied it up tonight. He simply doesn’t get rattled.
April 12, 2008 at 10:25 pm
1. Never expected Habs playing “physically” like game 1, but the game 2 was just too “up side down”. Carbo should learn lesson from it.
2. Kovalev’s penalty was just too “juvenile”. This was unaccepted as “C”!!!
3. Les boys, just regard Bruins as a regular playoff team. No matter how many wins, the “next” game is alway the 50-50 competition.
Bottom line in Boston: 1-1. Let’s finish the round 1 at Bell Centre!
April 12, 2008 at 10:27 pm
Yes, you did say that, and I tend to forget that in the moment, Senet 1. Thanks for the dose of perspective. This team is overachieving to some extent.
April 12, 2008 at 10:30 pm
Yes you are right about Price, I never had the kind of confidence when Huet was in the net. He sort of reminds me of the confidence we use to have when Patrick Roy was are goalie.
April 12, 2008 at 10:31 pm
I think the habs have been reading too many newspapers or listening to the media, telling them how great a team they are. It has gone to their heads. They seem to think that all they have to do, is just step on the ice, and they will win. Hockey is about playing for 60 minutes, skating, checking, hitting, and a good PP. When the habs don’t skate, they’re very average, and the worst team in the league will beat them. So the habs played down to Boston’s level tonight, and luckily found a way to pull out a win. If the habs play their game and skate, then there’s no way the bruins can beat them.
JUST SKATE GUYS AND PLAY YOUR GAME! forget about what the bruins are doing, the habs just need to concentrate on what the habs need to do to win!
April 12, 2008 at 10:34 pm
Our team sort of reminds of of the Oilers, they went to the finals against the Islander back in 1982 I think, the Islanders were the powerhouse of the league and had already one two straight cups, the Oilers looked very good but the Islanders with good goaltending and a solid defence taught the Oilers about playoff hocket. As you know the Oilers learned their lessons very well as the won the cup 4 out of the next 5 years.
April 12, 2008 at 10:35 pm
Oh BTW, I can’t stand Cherry. what a bruins homer! Is CBC the canadian Boston corporation? They seem to want the bruins to win. So I guess if the leafs aren’t playing, anyone who plays the habs, they want to win. Why do they hate the habs so much? maybe because of 24 stanley cups! Cherry needs to get a life and stop pissing off hab fans.
April 12, 2008 at 10:39 pm
Hey Hablifer, you got it right there, that is exactly how it looked tonight, they seemed to recover but once they got up 2-0 they seem to think they had the game won. We have to play the way we played in the first game, skate, skate skate, Hit hit hit and check check check. Our PP needs to take a look at the videos to see that they are not shooting the puck enough. Also I will say this, Markov could have scored 2 or 3 goals if he could have handled the pass tonight at the corner of the net.
April 12, 2008 at 10:42 pm
Just avoid watching CBC for Habs games. They are all jealous haters…
Donut Cherry is in favor of any team playing against Habs. He is garbage!!!
April 12, 2008 at 10:46 pm
Well I have to admit it like cherry for the most part except when we are playing Boston, Unfortunately, he can never get over the coaching error he made when he sent too many men on the and Lefleur scored and they lost the series. If you remove him form the Bruins he makes some good point. Hockey Night in Canada would not be the same without him. we just have to learn about his sour grapes when it comes to Montreal beating his bruins.
April 12, 2008 at 11:04 pm
the game tomorrow night will be alot tougher.not just because it’s in boston, but because the bruins can’t afford to go down 3-0 . If that happens, the series is over. So the bruins will be fighting for their lives, hitting like crazy, and if the habs don’t play better, sharper, come with their A game, we’lll lose. It’s going to take (repetition) a 60 minute effort, and the habs can’t take off a period or 2. Which habs team will show up? Let’s hope it’s the same team we saw on Thursday.
April 12, 2008 at 11:04 pm
Notice anything unusual about the last two games, yes they won at home, and keeping the guys in the hotel room helps them keep that analogy going, I am glad Kovalev has the monkey off his back, and don’t forget, he is wearing the ‘C” now and I think its there to stay..just like i ..well forget it, anyway Iam also glad that LaPierre didnt get to hurt from that slap shot when he took that penalty, so..its off to the bear barn to cook some meat, bring the BbQ sauce !
April 12, 2008 at 11:06 pm
If Montreal wins tomorrow, we may see a goal change for game 4 if it goes 3-0
A little friend told me….
April 12, 2008 at 11:09 pm
Well there is one good thing we have been a good road team all year and usually play better on the road so heres hoping that the good road team shows up tomorrow.
April 12, 2008 at 11:12 pm
I also think we see a couple of changes to the lineup for tomorrow’s game. I would like to see Obyrne and maybe even the kid Stewart. I think we are going to need some toughness in our lineup for Sunday’s game.
April 12, 2008 at 11:15 pm
Brisebois had played two fairly good games, although I detected a couple of giveaways tonight in our own end and blind passes up the wall when Boston was putting the pressure on us. that has always been his problem, he panicks with heavy forechecking and body contact.
April 12, 2008 at 11:23 pm
Great minds, the same with you, Senet 1.
Brisebois out, Obyrne in;
Stewart impressed everybody in his NHL debut. Thumb up!
April 12, 2008 at 11:29 pm
Donna Cherry should coach Boston Sunday for old time sakes. He can even put too many Men on the ice. Just like in 79…………
Cherry an “Horses ***”
April 12, 2008 at 11:39 pm
Kovalev’s father came from Russia watching his playing in Montreal (the first time after he has been playing in NHL). He became a little bit nervous…
Kovalev will be exploding in Boston.

Go here and leave comments about Don Cherry …
April 13, 2008 at 9:11 am
Everybody outside Ontario is sick of the negative comments towards the Habs by Don Cherry and others on the CBC network, Our taxes dollars pay for this? Hey Don you like to show video’s from the past , show us all the one where you said The Leafs would make the playoff’s … Hey Don when a high stick causes bleeding its 4 minutes, look in the rule book. The Habs get no respect from CBC and its gotten to the point where people who are not Habs fans are talking abut it, Thank god we dont have to watch another Leafs game this year and soon we wont have to watch another Bruins game either … But I am sure Don will be cheering some other American team , I bet it will be the ones the Habs face next .. any takers ??
April 13, 2008 at 9:52 am
No doubt in my mind Don Carnage. To think don cherry calls himself a true canadian. pfffffff
April 13, 2008 at 10:01 am
The Leafs Post Season got under way yesterday at Glenn Abbey. The Leafs were blown away by the Host Team.
Tucker got a Game Misconduct for a brutal cross check to the back of the Opposing Caddy.
McCabe got a game as well for a two handed slash to a furry little groundhog. It is believed to by Wiarton Willy but is difficult to confirm because of Decapitation.
April 13, 2008 at 10:03 am
I E-Mailed CBC and gave them a piece of my mind last night.
It was said that CBC recieved Death threats against Cherry last night. I don’t know if this Rumor is Ligit or not. But it does not surprise me though …
April 13, 2008 at 10:18 am
BIG win last night boys, but we gotta pick this up. Wasn’t a very well organized game last night, and against any other team in the eastern playoffs we would have paid for it. Lets just not get into habits that we can’t shake for the next round. Don’t let the Bruins get goin here at all….take em out and get rested for the next round. All in all, great win….lets just get that #1 PP going again….it shouldn’t have went to OT. GO HABS GO !!!
April 13, 2008 at 10:33 am
That was a poorly reffed game yesterday. The Candadiens benefitted during the latter part of the game but when minor taps are considered penalties that may decide the outcome as momentum changes occur, there should be a call from the bigwigs to wake up and let the players play….Through the regular season games cross-checking, interference, hooking etc are let go and the a minor brush off, incidental hold, etc etc… come on that’s part of hockey! to a certain degree. Absolutely when things get out of hand call them then!!!
Take the win just the same. The Habs left the hitting game in the dressing room and basically too many errors throughout the game. Lucky to get the win. Especially for Price’s role he stole the game! Which is what a good goalie is supposed to do.
On to tonight’s game. Almost gave Tony fodder material. Go Habs Go!
April 13, 2008 at 10:33 am
I sent this to Coaches Corner:
“You Don Cherry are a disgrace to Canada. You call your self a Canadian and yet you root for a American team.
I can’t believe the **** that you Spew from your mouth!
Who are you to judge any team or player. What have you ever done? You could not make it as a player or a Coach in the NHL. How many Stanley Cup rings do you wear Don?
You are very bitter towards Montreal because when you did Coach, the Habs have always put your Big Bad Goon Bruins out of the playoffs.
Do the Canadian Tax Payers (who pay your Wages) a favour and Quit. Say the right thing on HNIC for a change. “I QUIT”
April 13, 2008 at 11:55 am
Congrats Habs fans…nice win.
The Kovalev winner was beautiful (skill part winning here) , I thought that Thomas looked average ( and that’s weak in NHL terms ). Really wish Julien would start the Rask era tonight in Boston.
The officiating was truly horrible on both sides. The Reich penalty was a joke…but the one on Kovalev was equally weak.
The Bruins came back because the Habs let them…the speed game was missing in the 3rd for the Habs.
Like I’ve said on numberous occations (for those of you that read my blog)…speed and skill will win the series for the Habs.
Just a note on Grapes….he can kiss my a@#$@…cost us the ’79 Cup, and I will never forgive that “Leafs” fan for that!
Tony from NorthBoston (an intelligent bruins & hockey fan)
April 13, 2008 at 12:00 pm
I not only have a problem with Don Cherry wining about the four minute penalty on Kotsopolous but even Bob Cole and Greg Millen, how excited they were getting when Boston got back in the game. Even in the 70′s when **** Irvin and Danny Gallivan were doing the games, they would never show a bias against the Maple Leafs when they were not playing Montreal. These guys are ridiculous and Cole being from the same province as Michael Ryder you would think he would show a little more vigour towards that team. This is a whole lot of jealousy from Toronto fans. Get used to it Bob and Greg it will be happening for many years to come.Did anyone else notice this last night.

I told them to send Cherry and Ron to the Fox network”where wannabe american right wing guntoting W Bush red neck Archie Bunker types can go and take Bob Cole”Edith” too !
April 13, 2008 at 1:29 pm
Well, Senet 1, I hope that you’re right in that last night was a bit of a wake-up call for the Habs. The good thing is that we don’t have very long to wait and see if it was. I hope that they come out like they did in Game 1, crushing any hopes that might remain in that Boston locker room. Even though they’re down 2-0, the Bruins can and will take a lot of positives away from last night’s game. The Habs need to prove that their 2-0 series lead wasn’t an accident, and more importantly, they need to implement a 60-minute effort that will bring them continuous success throughout the playoffs.
Did anyone see Ward’s ridiculous interview on TSN prior to last night’s game? He was informed that the Habs’ plan was to wear Chara down, to which he replied (paraphrased) ‘Good for them, and good luck! He’s 260 pounds. They can’t wear him down. But good luck to them in trying.’ The ridiculous part was the manner in which he said this – like a bratty child. Ah, yes, the reaction of a frustrated athlete.
April 13, 2008 at 2:02 pm
Tony from N.B.,SURE YOUR NOT A CANADIENS FAN?I think your in the sport closet bro !lol
April 13, 2008 at 2:21 pm
Xtrahabsfan…LOL
No, I’m just one of those rare sports fans that actually knows when my team is overmatched, and refrain from smack. I’ve spent to many nights at the old Garden watching the bruins employ the same old style…It’s time for change, and Sinden still has his imprint on this team.
At least I’ve got the Sox to cheer about (it’s about time anyways)
April 13, 2008 at 2:51 pm
Hey Joseph, I hope I am right too. I guess we will soon find out, on the other hand if Boston is going to win a game inthis series it will be the 3rd, I expect that they did take a lot of positives from this game, however, dejection could also be in their minds. Consider this, they played their best game against us in a long time and we still won. We could be in their heads. It is important for us to come out fast and hard in the first period. One thing we have not had too many games where we played two bad games in a row.
April 13, 2008 at 2:57 pm
Hey,Tony from NB. I think all of us habs fans would agree that we have the better team. On the other hand, I have learned over the years that never say never. I note that you are a sox’s fan good for you, but you know what Yogi always said. I is never over until it is over. I can remember back in 1971, we faced the Bruins with Orr, Esposito, Hodge, Cashman and Boston had won the cup the year before. Basically we didn’t have a chance. But with a hot goaltender and a good game plan we won that series. Personally, I do not see much difference between any of the eight teams in our conference if one team gets the breaks anything can happen. So as I habs fan I would never concede that my team could not win any series.
April 13, 2008 at 4:09 pm
I hope I’m not the only one here that thought Tony was from New Brunswick ,lol or as Tony would call it Bruins-wick,eh eh…..

Thankyou for that Touching Read.

Boston may have gotten a Confidence boost last night because Montreal let them. If Montreal wants to play Hockey Boston would not stand a chance…
April 13, 2008 at 5:15 pm
I heard a rumour that Bergeron could be playing tonight. Would certainly give the bruins a lift, but if the habs skate like game 1, habs will prevail.

Sorry bout post #97 that was from my 7 year daugter, lol
