Habs / Bruins: Game 6
-
Game 6…
Not many anticipated the series would go this far. The Canadiens themselves seemed to believe that. Now the Bruins who have outworked and outplayed the Habs have a chance to even up the series on home ice.
The Habs still hold the 3-2 lead and the chance to end it tonight. Hopefully ‘the message’ was received by now and the Habs come out ready to win.
Saku Koivu may or may not dress. You have to believe he will, if nothing else just to shake things up. Provide some veteran leadership and maybe stir up the stagnant powerplay.
If the Habs close it out tonight, this can all be looked back on as valuable learning experience to carry on to the next round. If they don’t, all bets are off for a game 7 against a confident and hungry Bruins team.
- goalie : What's with the Margahauland link just below? It appears to be from a hacker. Any thoughts???
- Margahayuland : hi all... sorry add this «link»
- Senet1 : I want the Bruins to win anyway so that we pick ahead of them in the Draft.
- Senet1 : Muller you got your wish NYR won game 4. So the Bruins will have to play another game at least.
- Senet1 : He may just bring all three of the kids up.
- muller93 : MB is forced to go out and get a big D-man. Missing Emelin for almost half the season is the last thing we needed to hear. Now going out and getting a big D-man is a MUST!!!
- muller93 : Now for the Fu**en Bruins who have no business even being in the second round are going to get a nice rest. Yes the same goons who took out one of best D-man for 6 more months. There is NO Fu**en justice. Just venting--Ok i feel better now.
- muller93 : So pissed to see the Rangers lay down and play like total crap. How did the Rangers beat the Caps? This team is playing with no heart--a must win and can only muster 23 shots...PATHETIC !!!
- muller93 : Senet I did see Galchenyuks goal--Made a great move for the game winner. You can see the kid has so much confidence.
- goalie : If Rangers get swept I wonder if Tortorella will get his walking papers? Or Glen Sather? They have tons of 'talent' but zero wins in this series.
- goalie : It's really too bad we lost to the Sens as we would have played the Rangers and the way NYR are playing we would have beat them too. If only. If only!
- Senet1 : Actually I agree it was a good move for them to play a shorter season and get the experience. He could not have played in the minors this year he would have had to play junior or the NHL. However, he now has a year under him and knows what to expect next year and hopefully take a bigger responsibility on the team. Did you see those two goals in the bronze game? Wow.
- muller93 : Good move by the Habs not having Galchenyuk play in the minors. Now Galchenyuk has 1 year in the NHL and playoff experience this is going to pay off big time come next year.
- Senet1 : Galchenyuk scores to back to back goals in shoot out to help USA win Bronze metal. I did not see the second goal but the first was a beauty.
- Senet1 : So we could pick anywhere from 25th to 23rd depending on who wins these quarter final series.
- Senet1 : First, is the 14 teams in the lottery. Then there are 12 teams that did not make the semi finals in the order of the seasonal finish, Then there are the four teams in the semi final the first two eliminated pick in the order of the regular season points total and the last two based on who wins and who loses the cup. So as it stand now if say Detroit beats Chicago then Detroit moves up to pick after us. Boston or NYR will move up and pick after us. LA or San Jose will move up and pick after us
- Senet1 : Basically, I was wrong about the draft pick situation. There are three groups of drafting teams within the 30 teams.
- Senet1 : seriously ready to challenge for the cup. He will us win games but he will not be the difference between winning the cup and not winning the cup. You pick up players like that once you have the team ready to challenge,.
- Senet1 : I am looking at the players to draft and there are a lot of big 6'3-6'5 forwards available ion the draft this year. If we could draft 3-4 big young players in the 2nd and 3rd round why would you want to give that up for a roster player who may have 2-3 years at best. If we are going to build a winner to have to build it with bigger players and there are a lot of good big players available this year. So you sign Ott and he is with us for the short run, but probably not when we are seriously re
- Senet1 : Boullion is a great mentor for the young D-men
- muller93 : Boullion is one of MBs great additions--Boull ion is a definite Keeper.
- muller93 : Getting rid of Kaberle frees up a lot of cash. Boullion is small but is reliable and doesn't back down from anyone.
- muller93 : Exactly Goalie any thoughts on a punishing D-man?
- goalie : They;re showing determination adn skill vs Ducks and Blackhawks.
- goalie : REd Wings could turn out to be the surprise team of this year's playoffs!
- goalie : WE need to rid our team of Kaberle and Webber. Step two would be to then move Diaz. If we get that big d-man I believe that would push Boullion to # 7 on the chart. We'd then go with Georges, PK,Markov (to continue mentoring Ememlin) Tinordi as our starting six . THEN I'd be excited about our chances. We could then work on getting bigger forwards.
- goalie : I too would gladly give up a 3rd round pick for Ott- the type of player we sadly lack. AND if we could get one more rugged, expeienced defenceman it would help immensely.
- muller93 : Senet what you are saying makes sense but if we can get Ott for a 3rd round I'll take that all day.
- muller93 : MB should be looking at a big D-man first, even though I like our blue line with the addition of Tinordi. We need that insurance just in case one gets injured. Also I'm a firm believer in starting with the goalie first then-defense-for wards-and we already have good goalie. We have all noticed when we have the lead Price is tough to beat.
- Senet1 : So sometimes you have to sacrifice for one year or two to build that team in the draft. then add the finishing touches through FA and trades.
- Senet1 : Muller, Detroit is another good example. They have been in the hunt every year with good well balanced teams yet only one or two cups to show for it. However, they have built a team that has a chance every years for the last 10+ years. That is what I think we have a chance to do this year with a good draft. It reminds me of the habs teams of the mid 80 and 90's we built a team then with sold draft picks and won the cup twice during that time period. So sometimes you have to sacrifice a one
- muller93 : Very true Senet, you do need luck and we haven't had any luck it seems since the habs moved to the Bell Center. We had an incredible run in 2010 with some crazy goal tending from Halak. With Galchenyuk-Tinor di-Gallagher all in 1 year--not too bad, even with an early exit in the playoffs.
- Senet1 : Muller I guess we all have our own ideas, but there has never been too many times that were successful when they traded their draft picks away. We have a chance to build this team so we have a shot at winning the cup over the next 10 years. Even as good as Pittsburgh has been they have only won the cup once since Crosby and Malkin have been with the team. That is because you not only need great players but you need luck to win, but one thing about Pittsburgh they have a chance every year. The
- muller93 : Good point on Torres, he might be a liability. Torres has to tone it down a bit, but that's his game-very aggressive.
- goalie : Though I don't condone what Raffi Torres did - thos shows you how repeat offenders or near offenders are going to be treated. His hit was NOT illegal BUT what the rap sheet adn reputation Torres has he got severly punished. Lesson to be learned by OTHER players because Torres dopesn't learn fromk his mistakes.

Lucic is 19, and somehow he is the heart of this team. He inspires EVERYONE to hit harder. He will be the face of this franchise in a short team.
We’ll give you Ryder for him.
April 20, 2008 at 5:30 pm
Kovalev?
April 20, 2008 at 5:44 pm
Maybe only Carey Price could make a deal.
April 20, 2008 at 6:02 pm
I’d trade him for Price, that it though. No way for Kovalev.
April 20, 2008 at 6:05 pm
Price is the only first class NHLer in Montreal.
April 20, 2008 at 6:15 pm
That’s what I thought, BruinsFan.
I don’t know, habs4life. I think that they Habs have some excellent building blocks in place. They just require a few players to lead them to the promise land.
Did anyone catch the Chelios post-game interview today? In response to the question of a surprisingly competitive Nashville team, he said:
“Yeah, they’re fast, skilled players, so we just pounded them and wore them down.”
Uh-huh.
April 20, 2008 at 6:34 pm
Reversely looking, nothing can be valued enough to trade Price from Habs!!!
Kovalev was a first class NHLer; fortunately he is this season; he would be no more from next season, who knows.
So, based on Price, adding some “motivating” players to the roster, Habs will be remaining as a super power in the Eastern Conference for the coming years.
(Komi is a motivator in the defense line; but we really need a native English speaking motivator in the OFFENSIVE line)
April 20, 2008 at 6:42 pm
Who in their right mind would want to trade Carey Price? He is the Habs’ goaltending future.
April 20, 2008 at 7:49 pm
Joseph, I’m with you man. I do love to see a smooth skating, stick handling European on my team. But, that team should be led by at least one veteran North American, or better a good solid core of 3 North Americans with heart.
My thinking is this…North American hockey players are raised with the thought that Lord Stanley’s cup is the ultimate prize in life. I could be wrong, but I don’t think that European kids think about the Stanley Cup as much growing up as we do. I don’t think it means the same to them. Sure, they realize that is the sign of hockey supremacy in the NHL…but to North American kids, I think it’s much more than that.
April 20, 2008 at 7:53 pm
LeBeau, agreed. I think that it’s safe to assume that the Stanley Cup means more to Canadian, and even American, kids than it does European kids.
April 20, 2008 at 8:59 pm
I would have bet the house that the Habs would win the whole thing this year before this series. You guys have the right piece to build around, Price, but Kovalev and Koivu are on the way out, and the youngs you have, just do not have tremendous upside potential. Kostitsyn is willfully allowing himself to be a rag-doll in this series.
April 20, 2008 at 9:34 pm
When you only get paid for 82 games why put an effort in after that? I mean you don;t get overtime pay for the playoffs so why try? That is the mentality of a few Habs players who haven’t showed up. To be honest our only good line this series (beg., smokes., Kosto.) all have one thing in common they are not European.
April 20, 2008 at 9:35 pm
Well as usual I am joining the discussions late so I have a few comments to catch up on. Joseph I understand what you are saying about game six but there is one difference. Montreal did not have to win that game and Boston did. That is what I mean, Boston showed their character because they had no choice,Montreal had a choice but made the wrong one.
Someone mentioned that Cargo is a bad coach well I sorry I cannot agree, is he the best coach no, had he learned a lot i expect so, but he still coach the team he was given to a conference title, it is not his fault he has too many Euro in his line up, he did not draft them. I will take carbo as a coach any time.
As far as Kovalev being a contributing factor to the NYR cup no one could disagree but this is one thing different. He had four or five very strong northamerican players on the team and there was no better Leader than Messier. He does not have that on this team and with his experience he should be one of those leaders and he is not doing his job.
As far as the risk reward trade of Huet, there were two risks, One Huet may come back to play us in the playoffs and beat us and two if we do not trade him we lose him as a FA at the end of the year. So yes the draft pick is a reward and all you have to do is look at the players that Montreal has drafted in the late round and you will see that many of them are currently play on the team. Montreal has not had the luxury of drafting high but they are one of the best teams at drafting in he late round with success.
Andy, your analysis of the number of Euro players on each team is fairly correct with one exception, Boston’s leadership is comming mostly from Northamerican players whereas Montreal’s supposed leaders are Euros.
BarrieHabFan, you stated my exact feelings, I have been saying all along that this team was being built for their 100th aniversary year, this team needs this playoff to gain the experience. So regardless of what happens you are right, this team is one step closer.
Well stated Joseph, I am on side with your statment regarding the Euro mix with NA players but as you said the most important thing is NA leadership.
April 20, 2008 at 9:43 pm
What will Montreal do with Crosby, Malkin and Staal to deal with, we cant even beat out Boston in a seven game series. When you look at Gaineys track record of draft picks with Dallas years ago, its rather pathetic. He also traded Iginla to Calgary, and has left our playoff goaltending to two rookies, while Theodore and Huet are having success elsewhere. Timmons former team Ottawa looks bad also, so we must ask, Who is running this ship. Riberio, Theodore and Huet promised Habs fans postcards from the second round.
April 20, 2008 at 9:48 pm
Personally, I like our young Euro players, both Kost, and Plekanic. I feel that they have played a little inconsistent but Plekanic has played well the last two games and lets not forget, he is a centreman and he is looking for Kovalev who seems to be hiding most of the time. Andre plays with passion but he is not a playmaker and needs someone to feed him the puck. Usually Kovalev sends him his passes but again no one knows were Kovalev is these days. Hopefully he finds his way to the area for Monday nights game. I agree with what Joseph said, you need a good mix of Euros and NA players, our problem is that five of our top six forwards are Euros we need that mix to me closer to half.
April 20, 2008 at 9:52 pm
Well Dancan81, you have to admit the with Koivu on the first line last night that line played rather well. Koivu was a little responsible for not staying with this man on two of the Boston goals but not because he was not trying, his conditional obviously was suspect not playing for three weeks.
April 20, 2008 at 9:57 pm
BarrieHabsfan. all I am saying is Huet was not going to be back next year and Price needed the experience in the Playoffs if he was going to lead this team in the future. All you have to do is look at the teams line up and there are not many 1st or 2nd round draft picks but there are a number of 3rd, 4th an 5th round picks that have made this team and many of the are North American players. As I have said this team matured a little earlier than the management system expected but this team would not learn anything with Huet in goal especially when he would not sign here next year.
April 20, 2008 at 10:03 pm
In regard to Riberio and Theodore, you cannot honestly suggest that we should have Kept this guy he is a soft as most of our Euros, and besides he had his chance in Montreal and became a problem player. Jose it was too bad what happened to him he just had too many personal problems to continue playing in MOntreal, the best thing that ever happened to him was to be traded out of the city and away from his personal problems. Let’s face it, it took him two years to overcome those problems, Colorado were about to trade him as well until he finally came out of his shell and started to play well and that only happen because of an injury to their other goalie.
April 20, 2008 at 10:10 pm
If we are lucky enough to reach the conference finals, and play Pittsburg we probably stand a better chance of beating them than we do Boston, one thing for sure, Crobsy will not be throwing his weigh aroung, this team plays more like Montreal the obvious difference is they have super star players and we are lacking in that department. Having said that many teams have great players and they do not win the cup because they play a team rather than a group of individuals. My one worry other than leadership has been how consistent our defence will be, you Know that markow would play better against a team that is not hammering him into the boards all the time and I expect Kovalev might reappear as well,
April 20, 2008 at 10:15 pm
Here is my prediction for Monday nights game, Montreal comes out and scores the first two goals, Boston comes back and scores one inthe second and the period ends 2-1. Montreal comes out and scores to make it 3-1 and Boston scores with two minutes left to make it 3-2. Montreal hangs on to win the series. And we all cheer and say how great of team we have.
April 20, 2008 at 10:28 pm
The question to you Senet 1: How was your prediction for the past 6 games? ALL correct? ALL wrong? Mostly correct? or Mostly wrong?
April 20, 2008 at 10:35 pm
Well I expect it was as good as the rest of you. I obvious felt that we would win game six and we almost did, I did not expect our defense to play so poorly in the last five or six minutes of the game. I was not normal, HOWEVER, I WOULD NOT BE A GOOD HABS FAN IF I DID NOT THINK OUR TEAM COULD WIN THIS GAME, ANY HABS FAN THAT DOES NOT HAVE FAITH IN THEIR TEAM SHOULD NOT CALL THEMSELVES A HABS FAN. IF WE ARE ONLY GOING TO HAVE FAITH WHEN WE ARE WINNING THEN WE ARE NOT REALLY TRUELY HABS FANS.
SO WHAT IS YOUR PREDICTION?
April 20, 2008 at 10:38 pm
Well I have learned over the years to trust in the ghost of habs pasts, you may see the Rocket play tomorrow night but he may be in someone elses body???????????
April 20, 2008 at 10:47 pm
Well I guess I am talking to myself either that or no one else wants to make a prediction or show their true colours. See you all Monday night and yes I will say it for all of you true habs fans. GO HABS GO.
April 20, 2008 at 10:51 pm
I just wish you had better prediction stats for the past 6 games for me to believe.
Honestly, I have never predicted a final score. But from the situation both team are facing and Habs have the home game, I would predict an insanely brutal offensive battle with a lot of power play chances for both teams. I would predict Habs win 4:2.
BTW, agreed most of your opinions. GO HABS GO!!!
April 20, 2008 at 10:56 pm
Now that is a true Habs fan. I know things do not look good right now but all true habs fans have faith.
April 20, 2008 at 11:09 pm
An open letter to the Montreal Canadiens:
Montreal. Canadiens. Habs.
I’m afraid that I have to come clean with you. I have to tell you something that hurts me deeply. I have to tell you that I’ve been seeing someone else. Now, before you get angry, please – just hear me out. I’ve been seeing the Calgary Flames, and I’ve been liking what I’ve been seeing, Habs. They’re just so passionate and entertaining that I couldn’t help myself. As I sat there feeling guilty and ashamed, I kep telling myself “This is wrong, Joseph. This is just wrong!” But it feels so good, Habs. They make me feel so alive. They understand my needs as a fan. (And I do have needs, you know.) They show me that they care to make my relationship with them work, at any cost. They are willing to sacrifice themselves to see that it does. They even dive in front of pucks for me, Habs. When’s the last time that you did that? I know what you’re thinking, but just let me finish. Please. It’s not you, it’s me. No, that’s not entirely true. It is you. This is your fault. You and I have had a relationship for a very long time, Habs, and it used to be amazing, but you’ve lost that passion that you used to have. You no longer seem to care about my needs as a fan, and it hurts, Habs. It really hurts. All you ever want to do these days is serve me crêpes and tell me to be sit by the waterfront and be patient. But I’m sick of being patient, Habs. I’m just a red-blooded American kid with a need for desire and passion. The Flames understand that. Oh, they do. Just let me finish. Do you know what the Flames served me tonight? Do you? They served me ribs, Habs. I mean, what more could this North American kid ask for? Ribs! I’m so confused, Habs. I’m so torn between what we used to be and what the Flames are offering me now. But listen. This doesn’t have to be the end. It doesn’t have to be this way at all. You could change. You could show me that you mean what you say when you say that you care to make me feel alive again. It wouldn’t take much. A few less crêpes and few more ribs on the menu would be a great start. That’s all I would ask. And then we could be happy again, like we used to be. I could watch you throw everything on the line just to make me feel good again. And perhaps even one day, we could sit and drink out of that big silver Cup that has been passed down to you through the generations. Think about, Habs. Think about who you used to be. For you. For me. For us.
April 20, 2008 at 11:10 pm
I fear with every fiber of my being more of the egregious pro-Montreal officiating. I can easily see this game being decided on a phantom call, a la game 2. The NHL has a fortune to gain every time Montreal advances.
April 20, 2008 at 11:35 pm
Pricless Joseph,just priceless lol
April 21, 2008 at 12:22 am
I think that the officiating in this series, is so biased towards Boston. I mean the bruins are hooking on every play, and never get called. I guess Boston brass must have paid off the officials, because they give 3 times the number of penalties to the habs, of much most are not deserved,
I guess the refs want Boston to win so badly, they’ll even call dives on us, when it’s a real penalty. shame on the refs! Can’t they be consistent instead of PRO-BOSTON?
April 21, 2008 at 12:24 am
Actually, I think it will a very low scoring game, very tight checking, because nobody wants to make a mistake. Everyone please say a prayer for our habs. they need it.
April 21, 2008 at 12:33 am
Glad you liked that one, Xtrahabsfan. I’m giving them another chance to redeem themselves tomorrow night… and then maybe another chance next season if necessary… and perhaps another the season after that. Who am I kidding, they own my heart!
I’ve avoided pulling out the ‘Biased Ref’ card this year. In fact, I might retire that one altogether. After all, its the NHL, and everyone knows that the officiating is horribly inconsistent. Besides, Toronto fans have the exclusive rights to that card. Come to think of it, I actually borrowed mine from a Leafs fan, and he probably wants it back for next season.
April 21, 2008 at 12:39 am
Holy Hockey Gods who Hold the Cup,
Please be Nice to the Habs.
Please Deliver them some Heart,
Some Grit and Determination.
For the Gods Know that they Need It.
For the Gods Know that they Don’t Have It,
Or at Least that they Haven’t Shown It.
April 21, 2008 at 12:39 am
F’N GREAT POINT B’S FAN POST 178!
THE HORSESHOE IS IRONICALLY PERFECTALY PLACED UP THE THE HABS’ ASSES!!!
April 21, 2008 at 9:26 am
Am I watching the wrong series? I think the officiating has been horrible, and more often than not in the favor of the Canadiens.
April 21, 2008 at 10:09 am
Yep ,the Habs do better as underdogs! The fans are going to win this one in the Bell center and then we get to eat the bear……GO HABS GO……….
April 21, 2008 at 10:44 am
while i totally agree with you guys that kovalev sucked this last game, but i have to remind you that this is how he played sometimes before. he is non consistent, but all his bashers were willing to accept that in regular season while he was scoring. he is not having a good series, that’s true, but the problem with kovy is that people want him to be something different than he is. you can’t expect him to be steve izerman, because he is not him. he is talented finesse player and he can be nasty when somebody gets him mad (remember elbow on tucker?), but he is not a leader, at least i don’t see that. he is playing or trying to play his style of game which fitted a lot of fans while he was producing. boston doesn’t let him do that and he seems to be lost and unable to adjust. it doesn’t mean that he doesn’t want to or not upset and frustrated.
as for lack of emotions, being from the same country and same age as him, i can relate to this. it’s not about not having emotions, it’s about not showing them and it is a product of environment in which we were raised, i wish i was more of southern personality – all cheers and smiles, but i’m not. our world was quite different from yours. my kids are different being raised in north america. but it doesn’t mean we don’t have heart or not willing to sacrifice. that’s kinda funny as whole russian mentality is about sacrificing.
russian players of older generation played different hockey on bigger surfaces where it is not as physical, it was a different game. also, while in training the accent was more on skills development, less on playing games and achiving result like here. if you are not accustomed to getting a win every day you train all the years of your training, then you won’t change magically one day once you come to north america. it doesn’t mean all europeans are soft, there are examples of pretty tough guys – d. markov, volchenkov, ovechkin, but some of them are of younger generation.
it just some of those guys were raised playing different game, some learn being more gritty and some don’t. as for getting rid of them, i sure recommend getting some “tough” guys from ottawa team. they still carry an image of soft team, even though their “euro” days are long over and the toughest guy is russian – volchenkov. no offense to canadians, i love and respect canadian players, but i love and respect some europeans too. but to be a leader you have to be born a leader, and kovalev is not one of them. and bure wasn’t one of them and mogilny too. ovechkin is, but he seems to be lost sometimes too.
i still hope habs can pull this off, losing this series would be very dissapointing after very good season that had.
April 21, 2008 at 11:09 am
Let’s pray for our Habs, no matter in what you believe. BLESS, BLESS, BLESS…
April 21, 2008 at 11:25 am
I saw the sign that Montreal will win tonight.
A Leafs Fan here at work who hates Montreal, put RED streaks through her hair. I said; “I like your Red streaks. You just brought Montreal some much needed luck”!
That was the sign. For a Leafs Fan to put Red streaks in her hair…..
