Habs / Flyers: Game 4

  • The Canadiens trail a playoff series for the first time this year. Down 2-1 for game 4 tonight in Philly.

Despite out shooting the Flyers by 20 shots the Canadiens dropped game 3. The powerplay clicked in the end, but was horrendous in the beginning when it was needed. Combined with some bad bounces, unlucky posts and bad goaltending, the Canadiens played catch up down 2-0 for the third straight game.

Guy Carbonneau is playing a few headgames by keeping his starting goalie a ‘secret’ until game time.

Expect Carey Price to return to the lineup and redeem his poor effort on Monday night.

Other than Martin Biron and their penalty killing unit, the Flyers have not overly impressed in any way. The Canadiens have defeated themselves.

Should the Habs start executing – manage to score first, have decent goaltending and have an average or better powerplay – they should not have any problem getting back into the series.

The Flyers are a weak team. The Habs are supposed to be a better team but showed that they’re actually a poor team when it comes to playoff hockey. They’ve got a lot to learn. Carbonneau can start by teaching them about killer instinct. Killer instinct is needed to finish a team that’s down 3-1. Killer instinct is needed to bury your offensive chances. They have none of it.

As to the classless Flyer fans that have poisoned this site with their presence, I’d like to return the favor in telling you that I’ll be enjoying watching the Penguins take your team apart period by period, game by game… letting you know just how far your team acutally is from a true champion. If you had shown any kind of class at all in here, I’d likely be cheering for your team (as I usually like the underdog), but you haven’t, and I’ll rest easy knowing that you special fans are whining about penalty calls whilst your team is getting destroyed by a far superior team in the next round. Start practicing your whining skills…

Really disappointed at the fact there was no tenacity or hitting by Montreal.
I am sick of fancy passes and those feeble attempts at blind back passes by Kostitsyn…Price is no better than Halak, this is not a goalie situation, but a lackluster, lazy, poor performance from a team thats happy enopugh getting through the first round..PATHETIC !!!!

NO HITS, NO FIGHTS….Roll over and die then !

Well it isn’t going to be easy but with those two goals, both going to the net and giving the goalie some trouble, we may have lost the battle guys but I still think we can win the war. Price will be back in the net with four days rest, some thought he looked tired.

If we were playing badly, I would say the series is over but we played well enough to win the last two games and all we need is the puck to bounce our way instead of Phillys way. they have got the breaks the last two games and they have worked hard to get those breaks, it is just unbelieveable that some of the breaks haven’t gone out way so far. Philly is a good team, and we should not keep running them down, they beat a good team to get here. However, I still feel we have a better team and can win three in a row. Whether we will or not we will see. BUT HAVE FAITH HABS FANS.

    1) Even if we lose every game 100-0 we will still be further than your team and the fact that we finished dead last last year would make even getting to that point an incredible feat.
    2) If you go on the Flyers blogs you will see Montreal fans saying the same things that have been said here, every team has dumb fans
    3) If the Flyers are a weak team that I guess you guys are a Junior league team then? Just admit that the Flyers are a team full of grit and yes some skill and your team isnt mentally strong or talented enough to over come them.
    4) You should be embarrassed not supporting your team when they are down and saying that the series is over.

Someone give Begin a medal…way to blow the comeback and all but knock your team out of the playoffs dummy. This team is going nowhere anyways…they never did evolve into playoff hockey players. Here’s Guy’s choices to put on the ice….a bunch of soft European pussies, or a bunch of no-skilled bums who are barely NHL level players. Either choice is lose-lose. i’m gonna sock the first Flyer fan in here that says this thing is over! In case you didn’t notice, we were up 3-1 against a vastly inferior Caps team and it took a game 3 overtime to finally squeak out of THAT series. Joseph is right, the Flightless Fowl are likely to eat either team coming out of this series for LUNCH. i’m not sure the better team won tonight, and it really defies understanding, but there it is. The realists among us thought this young team would start to make noise after a few more years together cause they DO have some talent, so this unexpected success (so far), against a superior foe, is pretty startling. There is NO ONE south of Moose Factory that thinks the Flyers could beat the Habs in four straight games, so buckle up! This ride ain’t over by a LONG SHOT!

There’s a difference between supporting one’s team and realizing that one’s team is going to lose a series. And that’s nothing to be embarrassed about.

I am not a bandwagon jumper, Chris. I called this team early on in the Boston series when I stated that I didn’t see a potential champion in them yet. That’s not abandonment, that’s just a realistic perspective.

Joseph, I am disappointed in you, I thought you learned your lesson from the Boston series. Philly is no different than the Bruins except they are getting the breaks and we are not. To this point we have made their goalie look good, the last two goals showed that we he is no better than our goalies if we do the same things to him that Philly is doing to ours. Sometimes the best team does not always win but what you ask for is the an effort. The team must change it’s game plan. That is the only thing I am disappointed in with our Coaching staff, not just carbo but all the coaches, we need to go to the net, shot the puck and set screens. We did both for about four for five minutes at the end of the game and got two goals. The ghosts of habs past came out in game seven of the Boston series and it is time for them to come out again. Anyway, I was hoping I would hear that true habs fan spirt and continue to have faith. again one game at a time it is never over until it is over.

One thing win or lose, we have played at least 12 playoff games, and the kids will have learned alot but most of it will not sink in until the playoffs are over. Then they will understand whether they have what it takes to move their game to the next level. It will also show Gainey what he actually needs to do to make this a better team.

  20. Who said Pittsburgh was going to win the cup? Have you heard about this upstart team in the West from Detroit?

  21. #21 Joseph says:
    April 30, 2008 at 10:18 pm

I realize that a team’s fans will always be biased toward their team, and thus they’ll see things diffeently than the opposing team’s fans.

On that note, I am done purporting the Habs as something that they are not this playoff year – the better team. They have more skill than most, and they may be able to take the play to the other team in the offensive zone for longish periods of time, but none of that matters if they can’t score the goals and come out with wins. That in itself makes the Habs a weak team. Fair enough.

That said, the Flyers, in this series, remind me of the 1991 Northstars. They would get bottled up in their own end for extended periods of time every game but they would captialze on the opportunities that they got. Of course that team got crushed by the Penguins in the Final. ;-)

Apologies to Flyers fans. Your team may have been outplayed more often than not in this series, but they’ve held the fort and they’ve been opportunistic. And they lead the series 3-1, which they honestly deserve.

Don’t call Senet 1 a loser, FLYERSFAN. He’s anything but. You, on the other hand, could use some maturity.

  36. I`m a Flyers fan and I know this series is in no way over, despite the fact that the Habs are 1-12 when down 3-1 in a series and the Flyers are 18-2 when up 3-1. Despite that, Montreal could easily win the next three. Why?

    1. Montreal has completely dominated up to this point. Especially shots.
    2. The referees are obviously trying to get Montreal into a series with Pittsburgh as there have been at least a half dozen rediculus calls against the Flyers in this series and many non calls against the Habs
    3. Montreal is obviously a much better team, especially in the speed department.

This should be interesting. I predict Montreal in 7.

  37. #37 Senet 1 says:

Joseph, I understand why you feel that way, believe me in my younger days I used to feel the same way. However, experience tells me that this team has played well, they have carried the play the last three games and lost, so what are the little things that they have to do in order to win instead of loose. It is not difficult, go the net, pay the price, set screens and shoot the puck. These are all fundamentals that this team has got away from for whatever reason. If they start doing them then there is no reason that they cannot come back and win this series. They are a better team on paper and on the ice, but they have to do the little things that win games and most of them are doable.

  38. #119 Senet 1:

Good post, you’re absolutely right. Win or lose we’ve had a great season and our many young players as well as our staff will have learned a great deal and have a lot to look forward to next year.

  39. Washington almost came back and theres no way way montreal can’t do the same. At least Montreal will still be first next year, and Price won’t be a rookie in the playoffs cup 4 sure next year! Montreal will wn game 5, no doubt but will they win game 6? probably not.

Now Habs fans realize why Pittsburgh LET the Flyers beat them last regular season game, throwing the game to NOT have to play them 1st round of the playoffs. They knew then, that it’s better to lose to the Flyers in the Conference Championship, than get knocked out of the playoffs in the 1st round.
