- Senet1 : Actually I agree it was a good move for them to play a shorter season and get the experience. He could not have played in the minors this year he would have had to play junior or the NHL. However, he now has a year under him and knows what to expect next year and hopefully take a bigger responsibility on the team. Did you see those two goals in the bronze game? Wow.
- muller93 : Good move by the Habs not having Galchenyuk play in the minors. Now Galchenyuk has 1 year in the NHL and playoff experience this is going to pay off big time come next year.
- Senet1 : Galchenyuk scores to back to back goals in shoot out to help USA win Bronze metal. I did not see the second goal but the first was a beauty.
- Senet1 : So we could pick anywhere from 25th to 23rd depending on who wins these quarter final series.
- Senet1 : First, is the 14 teams in the lottery. Then there are 12 teams that did not make the semi finals in the order of the seasonal finish, Then there are the four teams in the semi final the first two eliminated pick in the order of the regular season points total and the last two based on who wins and who loses the cup. So as it stand now if say Detroit beats Chicago then Detroit moves up to pick after us. Boston or NYR will move up and pick after us. LA or San Jose will move up and pick after us
- Senet1 : Basically, I was wrong about the draft pick situation. There are three groups of drafting teams within the 30 teams.
- Senet1 : seriously ready to challenge for the cup. He will us win games but he will not be the difference between winning the cup and not winning the cup. You pick up players like that once you have the team ready to challenge,.
- Senet1 : I am looking at the players to draft and there are a lot of big 6'3-6'5 forwards available ion the draft this year. If we could draft 3-4 big young players in the 2nd and 3rd round why would you want to give that up for a roster player who may have 2-3 years at best. If we are going to build a winner to have to build it with bigger players and there are a lot of good big players available this year. So you sign Ott and he is with us for the short run, but probably not when we are seriously re
- Senet1 : Boullion is a great mentor for the young D-men
- muller93 : Boullion is one of MBs great additions--Boull ion is a definite Keeper.
- muller93 : Getting rid of Kaberle frees up a lot of cash. Boullion is small but is reliable and doesn't back down from anyone.
- muller93 : Exactly Goalie any thoughts on a punishing D-man?
- goalie : They;re showing determination adn skill vs Ducks and Blackhawks.
- goalie : REd Wings could turn out to be the surprise team of this year's playoffs!
- goalie : WE need to rid our team of Kaberle and Webber. Step two would be to then move Diaz. If we get that big d-man I believe that would push Boullion to # 7 on the chart. We'd then go with Georges, PK,Markov (to continue mentoring Ememlin) Tinordi as our starting six . THEN I'd be excited about our chances. We could then work on getting bigger forwards.
- goalie : I too would gladly give up a 3rd round pick for Ott- the type of player we sadly lack. AND if we could get one more rugged, expeienced defenceman it would help immensely.
- muller93 : Senet what you are saying makes sense but if we can get Ott for a 3rd round I'll take that all day.
- muller93 : MB should be looking at a big D-man first, even though I like our blue line with the addition of Tinordi. We need that insurance just in case one gets injured. Also I'm a firm believer in starting with the goalie first then-defense-for wards-and we already have good goalie. We have all noticed when we have the lead Price is tough to beat.
- Senet1 : So sometimes you have to sacrifice for one year or two to build that team in the draft. then add the finishing touches through FA and trades.
- Senet1 : Muller, Detroit is another good example. They have been in the hunt every year with good well balanced teams yet only one or two cups to show for it. However, they have built a team that has a chance every years for the last 10+ years. That is what I think we have a chance to do this year with a good draft. It reminds me of the habs teams of the mid 80 and 90's we built a team then with sold draft picks and won the cup twice during that time period. So sometimes you have to sacrifice a one
- muller93 : Very true Senet, you do need luck and we haven't had any luck it seems since the habs moved to the Bell Center. We had an incredible run in 2010 with some crazy goal tending from Halak. With Galchenyuk-Tinor di-Gallagher all in 1 year--not too bad, even with an early exit in the playoffs.
- Senet1 : Muller I guess we all have our own ideas, but there has never been too many times that were successful when they traded their draft picks away. We have a chance to build this team so we have a shot at winning the cup over the next 10 years. Even as good as Pittsburgh has been they have only won the cup once since Crosby and Malkin have been with the team. That is because you not only need great players but you need luck to win, but one thing about Pittsburgh they have a chance every year. The
- muller93 : Good point on Torres, he might be a liability. Torres has to tone it down a bit, but that's his game-very aggressive.
- goalie : Though I don't condone what Raffi Torres did - thos shows you how repeat offenders or near offenders are going to be treated. His hit was NOT illegal BUT what the rap sheet adn reputation Torres has he got severly punished. Lesson to be learned by OTHER players because Torres dopesn't learn fromk his mistakes.
- muller93 : Senet normally I would agree with you on not trading draft picks but we are not in a rebuilding stage. Sometimes draft picks can be a roll of the dice and it can take up to 3 years to be NHL ready. We have a good team and I agree with Stuo players like Clowe-Torres-Ott -Scott will make a big difference. Somebody has to protect Gallagher, he can't keep getting hit the way does--we need a tough forward so they think twice before going after Gallagher.
- Senet1 : Really a heathly Habs team would probably win more games against the Pens that we did against the Sens. Reason they Pens would not play as physical against us as against the Sens. If we get good goaltending we win at least two games.
- zpezada4ok : hello all «link»
- stuo11 : hes a tougher big guy too! Just a minor adjustment but will help a bit
- stuo11 : hes better than markov, and hes french who was in mention for defenceman of the year
- goalie : Markov for Beauchemin - an injury prone d-man for an ;old timer'd-man. Beauchemin is NOT what the Habs need in my opinion. He is a HUGE defensive liability.
- goalie : Stuo 11 I'd make that trade with Oilers fast BUT I doubt the Oilers will make that. Two marginal d-men at the best for a switch of first round picks - not a chance .
- stuo11 : markov for beachemin?
- stuo11 : let moen go
- stuo11 : maybe try and get steve begin back
- stuo11 : we wouldve kicked out all other teams but pens, sens,

And at least we didn’t throw in the towel by trading Souray, although we will most likely lose him to UFA.
February 27, 2007 at 3:24 pm
Since we are firing Gainey lets throw out Carbo with him………..
February 27, 2007 at 3:28 pm
The habs will be sorry they let Yannic Perreault go to the Leafs. They’ll probably find this out the next time they meet. Now I favour Toronto over the Habs to make the playoff. It’s only a minor move that will likely get the Leafs over the hump. The Leafs stole Perreault, He would have been a good second line center and his face off record makes him one of the best. Stay tuned.
February 27, 2007 at 3:33 pm
We have done nothing and will pay for by not making the playoffs. Adding another Goalie???? that’s the last thing we need. We need goal scorers!!!
Look at our last 10 games, 4-6. If we do not score more we most probably will not make the playoffs let alone put any kind of fight if…IF we make it. If you want to make some money on a bet, find your freinds who are huge habs fans and bet them the habs wont make the playoffs. I am a habs fan but with no move made before the deadline??? now if we don’t make the playoffs we will get nothing for Souray meaning we now, no matter what, we are starting next season with less then what we have this year barely in any sort of contention.
Gainey messed up!
February 27, 2007 at 3:33 pm
man we really missed out on ryan smyth but did not miss out on perreault
February 27, 2007 at 3:38 pm
Geez i’m glad we didn’t get any of these guys, they cost way too much.. Let’s face the facts… we are alot more than one player away from the cup
I wish Gainey was able to unload some more deadwood, oh well i’m glad he wasn’t at buyer at the deadline, it’s just not worth it. short term or long term
Seems like people just want Gainey to make any sort of trade, yeah let’s give up some young players and high draft picks for a rental who we are gonna have for 2 months. yeah that’s a great idea when your not a contender.
I could see us making a big splash at the draft or in the off season… we now have some more tradeable assets than we did before with the Rivet robbery gainey performed. I’d rather use our assets for a players we really want and need.
If tampa doesn’t get at least 8 playoff home games or somewhere around there, they will lose money this year. The ownership has already stated there payroll will have to be reduced next year regardless of the cap going up. So expect one of Tampa’s big three to be moved for young players and prospects. we’ll see what happens there.
Ryan Smyth traded btw, not the kinda of return they should have got either.
February 27, 2007 at 3:38 pm
ryan smyth to long island.
February 27, 2007 at 3:39 pm
I suspect Smyth may re-sign with the oilers on July 1… if so this would end up being a good trade for them.
February 27, 2007 at 3:40 pm
ummm we may have not of done anything today but we still made atrede(rivet) just it wasn’t today, it was a great trade for us, and iam glad the habs didn’t make any trdes becuase i like our roster right now, and i odnt think there was much for gainey to get anyways. all the big players went to cup contending teams, and i would of hated it if giney made one of those *** some trade for high drafts picks, for a player who probably wont even save this team. We will clearly make the playoffs, and will get huet back for the playoffs, and everything will be just fine. SO SHUT UP ABOUT THE HABS NOT MAKING ANY DEALS BECAUSE WE DID, AND IT WAS A GREAT ONE:)
GO HABS GO
Habs 4 Life
February 27, 2007 at 3:46 pm
Deal. What deal. Where was I when this took place. Oh that rotten deal. The new boy 4 points in 47 games. Well that will certainly bring home the cup. We don’t need Kiovu now……………..
February 27, 2007 at 3:46 pm
Really disappointing that more deadwood wasn’t unloaded from the roster to build for the Habs future. Hope that Downey will be back on the Habs roster in time for the next Pens game so he can again lecture the kid on how to play the game. Maybe Downey could even give Laraque a lesson or two.
February 27, 2007 at 3:46 pm
why couldn’t we trade KOIVU STRAIGHT UP FOR SMYTH WE ARE PATHETIC THE ONLY GUY WHO DESERVES WHAT HE HAS IS SOURAY AND I DONT EVEN THINK WE DESERVE HIM GAINEY WTF ARE YOU DOING
F#$K IN GAINEY WE TRUST
February 27, 2007 at 3:48 pm
I really hope you are right Habs 4 life. We go on any sort of skid like before there is no chance we make the playoffs. With the trades other teams got stronger and we remained the same. I think we will not make the playoffs, we score get a goos lead and then barely pull it off. If we do make the playoffs there is not much to look forward too with the teams at the top. Even agains the week teams we have trouble proving we are also one of the week teams. The Rivet deal foreced us to keep Souray today and if we do not make the playoffs then we will lose Souray to UFA and then free up some room in the cap and simply get another D that is not as good as Souray. We shoud have unloaded Souray for a proven goal scorer which would cover missing his points.
February 27, 2007 at 3:55 pm
I still like the Habs. 25 in 2009
February 27, 2007 at 3:58 pm
WTF Gainey! No action besides a goalie that’s on his fourth team in one season. Too many Europeans + no trades = no playoffs. Boo Gainey, boo Samsonov, boo Aebisher, boo habs.
February 27, 2007 at 4:04 pm
Did it ever occur that no one wanted any of our deadwood? I’ll be mad if Markov and or Souray walk away for nothing… otherwise i am very thankful we weren’t a buyer of any kind. trading youth for a rental at this time would set us back imo.
February 27, 2007 at 4:04 pm
Gainey needs to read that book “General Managing for Dummies”. Can he read? he most certainly can’t make deals……………
February 27, 2007 at 4:08 pm
Listen boys. We need a player/players to win the cup this year or maybe the next. Don’t worry about the future. The days of dynasties 3-4 cups in a row are over. That will never happen again. They build teams to win one cup now. Not mutiple cups in a row.
February 27, 2007 at 4:18 pm
Well lets hope they perform a miracle and prove Gainey right. Wouldn’t that be surprising, the whole world wrong about this bunch of misfits pulling off a major upset, if only. Let’s hope we get a decent finish though, that is all we can hope for.
February 27, 2007 at 4:39 pm
I’m not sure if it is Gainey or Gillette, but someone is certainly testing my patience as a habs fan. The NHL has had a cap for two seasons now, and the habs have not responded by putting a decent product on the ice for their fans. We have one of the highest seating caspacities in the league, and a very strong loyal fan base…but where is our return. For the past two summers gainey has “saved cap room” in case it is needed at a later date. Yet in neither year has he done anything significant during the season or at the deadline to to improve the team.
All the Theodore trade accomplished was freeing up more money he was not intending to re-invest in the team. Then they turned around and gave too much money to Samsonov whom I predicted wouldn’t be worth the ink it took to sign his name to the contract. We essentially have the exact same team as we had a year ago, and look how far they went. No check that , we are worse because last year we had a goalie. Aebisher’s armour has more holes in it than Switzerland’s other major export…swiss cheese. I absolutely hate what is going on with this historical franchise. No deals when most teams around them got better? Never in my 26 years of loving this team has it been so discouraging to be a habs fan.
February 27, 2007 at 4:54 pm
In Gainey We Trust! Why….
I have not seen anything in his tenure that has made this team better. When he took over this team we were a cusp team, and we still are…. Oh yeah, he got rid of a big contract like Theodore…wait, he gave Theodore that big contract.
I can agree to not mortgaging the future for a rental player…but who is our future? Perezhogin, Plekanec, Latendresse, Ryder, Kostysyn? I wouldnt bet too much money on that line up when other teams are building a future with the likes of Semin, Ovechkin, Crosby, Stall, Malkin, Horton, etc….
I don’t get it….Salary cap era or not….we sold our souls back in 96 (i think) when we got rid of Roy for a bags of pucks and we were never able to recover, we never re-built, we never really got any better….in the mean time we see temas like Anahiem, San Jose, Nashville, Tampa, Atlanta, Carolina become contenders….
February 27, 2007 at 5:08 pm
Awesome! No replacment for Aebi-*******
How can you drop the ball on Ryan Smyth? How? At least make a damn call before 3pm.
Our 100 year anniversary is coming up and you have a chance to get Captain Canada and you drop the ball?
I can’t forgive them for this or for a better word “lack of managment”.
February 27, 2007 at 5:09 pm
you mean to tell me that Gainey couldnt package up say sammy or perez and milroy plus TWO first round picks of a weak draft for Ryan?
please tell me its because he knows that Ryan will re sign with the oil next year…
please?
and now?….what do we do?….do we send Halak back and ride leighton and Abby into the playoffs?…if you believe that you’re nuts.
bottom line is the islanders with this addition will make the show, and either the habs or leafs are out…..smythe is THAT good.
February 27, 2007 at 5:17 pm
Yes i agree t-rum i think the habs will be leap froged very very soon for good
February 27, 2007 at 5:27 pm
my name says it all. we needed two things, a power forward and a goalie. what did we get? a goalie who will never get a start. thanks for the slap in the face from the montreal organization i’m starting to become a masichist because this seems to happen every year to the fans, my tolerance for pain is at a threshold. next year if there are no changes, calgary will be my number one team, considering i’ve been here for 10 years now and have been a loyal habs i see no reason to continue with my “wishful thinking”.
February 27, 2007 at 5:34 pm
If we wanted ryan smyth we would have to start with Carey Price, add another top prospect and first round pick/picks, ya excellent pickup for a 2 month rental.
the guys on tsn are clueless saying they can’t believe we didn’t get a goalie like belfour or Joseph. they actually seem to think the Leafs have better goaltending than us…. maybe the only habs game they watched was last night.
And too suggest the oilers would take samsanov it just play silly.
Can we please be like the Leafs and mortgage our future for a 2 month rental…i was hoping the Leafs would do the same thing again this deadline. maybe there organization has grown a brain.
Yeah we’ll see how much you love the deal when the Isles get knocked out in the first or second round and Smyth walks away as a free agent.
rentals are for teams who are actually contenders. if we made a rental trade like some suggest it would have set us back long term and even immediately after the season.
I just don’t get where people are coming from.
yup no replacement for Abby our back up goalie boo hooo. Carey Price is eligible to play for us as well when the WHL playoffs are over, which is way before the NHL’s season. If they sign have Price signed yet or not i do not know. No one knows when Huet will be back either…
I guess they think are 36 year old rental goalies ,well past there prime will lead us to the promised land. Abby is fine as a back up IMO.
Geez if gainey got Belfour or Joseph can u imagine the ammunition he would have gave Joshtm? LOL
February 27, 2007 at 5:34 pm
who am i kidding? i’ll never jump ship. i’m just really bitter at the lack of effort from MANAGEMENT.
February 27, 2007 at 5:46 pm
yup management is really pissing me off right now
February 27, 2007 at 5:57 pm
Habs Fans My ***,, you guys are pathetic. Whine this, whine that, did you happen to notice the number one draft pic we scored while still keeping a playoff contender of a team, As Burke said prices are too high, As are most of your standards. Theres a reason no one wants to play in montreal, and it aint because of the French language, its cause of the savage nature of its fans and its press. Yes Pride is Awsome, to love a team as much as you and I do, BUT ever think you might be taking it all a bit too serious, and hell maybe these players actually read this blog. Boo on you all I say, I’ll be quite comfortable on my couch enjoying a Habs game win or lose with great players, cause I can see my grass, and my neighbours is just about as green as mine.
February 27, 2007 at 5:59 pm
On TSN, Keenan talked about some GM’s who just look at their roster all day, and never make trades. he’s talking about our fuc#$%%en GM, GAINEY, that gutless moron! You’re ******** over the fans! We should have gotten Perreault!
watch him score against us. He was a perfect fit, and I’ll bet we would have resigned him for next year. What the hell is wrong with GAINEY?
This organization NEVER EVER does anything to improve!
Like I said last night, when the season’s over, Souray is gone, and we have NOTHING to show for it! We should havr traded him for the future of this franchise! But guess what? There’s NO FUTURE WITH THIS TEAM! I’m fed up with Carbo, Gainey, and Gillette! This is the most FUC#$%^ked up franchise!
I hope they lose all remaining 18 games! It would serve them right!
February 27, 2007 at 6:04 pm
Tonight were gonna kick some ranger but.
February 27, 2007 at 6:05 pm
BUTT
February 27, 2007 at 6:11 pm
I’m really disappointed. It seems we go thru this every year, and the fans suffer because we stay in this stagnant position, with no improvement, or actually regressing.
At the start of the season, I had hoped we would score more, but the opposite happened, and now we have but a shell of a competitive team. Our goaltending is a laughing matter, and I don’t see any light at the end of the tunnel. Our farm team is very weak, not alot of prospects, so what should we be excited over? It will again, be a long off season, with summer coming earlier for the habs. I guess I should take up golf, because there won’t be any habs hockey
games to watch. Very frustrating at the way this organization treats loyal fans!
February 27, 2007 at 6:28 pm
How can any of you wannabe manager’s know what deals were offered ? You think you know what was said yet no one knows, as far as I see Bob did not panic and for that I am happy, we cant sell our future for the short term.
February 27, 2007 at 6:34 pm
Actually DON: it’s the opposite way around. Had we traded Souray, it would have been for our future. We could have gotten a player off a team’s roster, plus 2 , #1 round picks. But I guess none of you care about the future.
Yes, finishing in 8th or 10th place every single year is more important than a very good team in about 2-3 years. Good luck to your talentless team! Enjoy the basement of the eastern conference, because it WILL BE A PERMANENT HOME FOR THE HABS!
February 27, 2007 at 6:38 pm
Is our neww goalie, called Leighton. Oh , I thought it was laughin. That’s what the rest of the league’s players will be doing when the pucks go into his net!
February 27, 2007 at 6:46 pm
Yes Don since Bob Gainey runs a very secret organization, he is just a top secret General Manager. Yes it was a tough day, Pittsburgh offered both Crosby and Ovechkin for Samsonov, but hey Gainey had to make the call. Now we’ll never know will we?
You are so funny Don. Honestly.
February 27, 2007 at 6:54 pm
Hey Don, since Bob did not panic and for that you are happy, maybe you can illuminate us wonderful ignoramuses who are not so fortunate to be in your esteemed company, tell us, if Bob did not sell our future for the short term, gee the present seems pretty crappy. Exactly which of the underachieving millionaires will save us in the future? What by not trading Samsonov for Crosby and Ovechkin, how will that save the Habs?
Or now Pittsburgh and even Toronto now have some key very offensive players, even in the long term that is a big bonus. I fail to see your point.
What because we kept Samsonov and Kovalev and Dandy and Boully, that we are gonna win the cup next year? Is that it?
February 27, 2007 at 7:06 pm
Gee, what other forward in the NHL and has cleared waivers so Gainey can give him a raise? Hmm..three points all year for half a million dollars. Hey Bob does that mean if Downey gets one mmore point it’s a million dollar raise? Is that how it works. Three points, half a million, four points and hey you join Dandy and Boully’s club for underachievers anonymous….
Is that our great future Don Carnage? Whoopee, I look forward to watching Downey save us from a lacklustre season…yes, on right wing, is Downey, who has scored one goal and one assist all year. Does that mean next year Downey will score two goals and one assist, that is our great future Don Carnage? And for that Gainey didn’t panic, last year Don was Gainey’s great answer to the trade deadline.
Okay, Downey it is Don Carnage, hooray, Gainey didn’t lose Downey…he didn’t panic and we can’t wait to watch Downey next year when he scores a goal in the first half, and follows that up with an assist in the second half of the season. Yup, Montreal, home of the two goal millionaires….
February 27, 2007 at 7:13 pm
DO YOU KNOW WHY HIGGINS IS NOT PLAYING??????
February 27, 2007 at 7:25 pm
He has the Flu
February 27, 2007 at 7:28 pm
Hey Don Carnage, we didn’t trade Kovalev so he can go back to his prima donna ways and get stupid penalties? For that Bob didn’t panic cause that is our long term future? Kovalev in the penalty box at the worst times in a game? HUH???
February 27, 2007 at 7:47 pm
Yo, whats up ? miss any thing? lol…
February 27, 2007 at 7:54 pm
Hey L55 yes, let us not give up our great future for rental players who might fit in and actually help us win and sign long term contracts. The league is full of rental players. During Montreal’s dynasty all of our greats were rental players, hey it is part of winning.
But no, we sign long term contracts with underachievers. Yes why trade our future for another season rollercoaster rides, you know get that five goal lead only to kiss it away in the third when Koivu turns a 5 on three to a power play….
Yes, let us not think about winning but enjoy a more secure future as losers…
February 27, 2007 at 8:01 pm
Someone here believes this?
“Yes Don since Bob Gainey runs a very secret organization, he is just a top secret General Manager. Yes it was a tough day, Pittsburgh offered both Crosby and Ovechkin for Samsonov, but hey Gainey had to make the call. Now we’ll never know will we?
Your on crack dude seriously
You make it sound like trades are one sided we say you take x and we take y
MMMM news flash you dont say what you give and what you get, you offer and see what counter comes back , I look around here and all I see are what you say the other teams should have taken… just dont work that way
And wow you guys can predict the next ten years cool you must all be rich, I mean you guys know everything in advance makes placeing bets a breeze, wish I had your foresight.
I think that Sheldon and Bob had a chat and Bob would have traded him if he was not pretty damn sure that he was not going to sign , like Ryan out west it was clear that he was not going to sign and was traded, I think we will see Sheldon here next year…but all you guys all ready know everything in advance so who wins the cup ? How many games? and who scores the cup winning goal?
I want to be know it alls like you !

Now you know how the leaf fans feel like over the years. Montreal is heading the same way.
The fans suffer the players don’t. Their millions will keep them happy.
I’m sick of the Habs. I realy am. The Fans have to stop going to the games. Stop buying merchandize etc. When the team looses money they may get the point.

PS: Jagr has 23 goals Ryder 21
One of those boys is at the end of his run … yep just give away anybody is what we see around here …. I see a bright future for thew Habs good young players and talent , not all the guys here now will be here next year, but that dont mean other teams did not try and get some of our younger guys , I am glad the young core was not ripped apart and I am pretty sure we will see some changes in due time.

Oh geeze, Don, yes let us stay on our losing course. No we can’t be having a GM who makes great trades. Eh Don Carnage? Oh no, we’ll slowly build the team and in ten years we’ll have a crispy bunch of old farts, forty years old and they’ll win the cup for us eh Don Carnage?
Oh wait, when the league undergoes a scoring glut, Downey will become the league leader with three points…oh ya…yup, Bob Gainey didn’t panic, he slowly built the team…and gee isn’t that moss growing on the side of Johnson’s head?

Maybe people complain because the team sucks? Maybe they complain because they pay money to watch games, buy merchandise and the team *still* sucks. That in the last 14ish years this team has done nothing but toe the line of mediocrity? Maybe we’re tired of lip service like “bright future” and “a core of good young talent”. Neither of those things is anywhere in sight. The Habs havent drafted a real impact player since maybe Koivu, and hes a 70-80 point player tops. Wake up.
